Mordecai   Motel   Kreiner

January 06, 1928 - October 12, 2007

A giant in Israel's food marketing has passed away. There is no other person in the history of the State of Israel who developed, molded and led the food industry with such brilliant leadership. He brought Israel’s Mom & Pop grocery store into the 21st century American style supermarket.

Mordecai Kreiner Z"L, known to most as Motel, was "Mr. Supermarket" the “Taster of Israel”. As manager of Supersol, he took it from two simple stores to the premier national chain. Along the way he introduced the concepts and methods with which we are all familiar today, but which were unknown in Israel before him. Every retail product in the market passed under his hands and was sentenced to success or failure by his expert judgment. He influence the way product were packaged, shelved and marketed forcing other supermarkets to adopted similar methods in order to compete. Even after retiring from Supersol, he was a much sought out advisor for retail marketing.

Motel was Born in 6 November 1928 in Poland his family were among the fortunate few to escape the conflagration that would soon consume Jewish life in Poland, at first finding temporary refuge in Columbia, South America, and soon after the family immigrated to the United States. Motel was influenced by Jabotinski’s ideology and joined the Betar movement in N.Y. to become one of its leaders. In Betar he met his wife Iris and both came on aliyah in the fall of 1956, just prior to the Sinai Campaign.

Motel, a modest and honest men assisted thousands of people and touched the lives of many more and remained loyal to his ideology and his friends to his last day.

He died on Oct. 12, 2007, leaving his wife Iris, a giant in her own right, 5 children and the grandchildren. May his memory be blessed.

To me Motel was a very special person. He was a doer, not a talker and was available to listen and give advise. I recall the decades past when I was on the Machon and after, and the times I and others sleep over in the Apartment in Ramat Aviv and Afeka. Motel and Iris were there for us. I recall his leadership in Camp Betar, especially in administration and the kitchen which was a model for me when I took some of those responsibilities. He, as others in the small American Betar group that made Aliya, has left his mark here helping build a new and better Israel.

When I visited Israel, I wanted to see life as the average citizen did. I visited the Supersol stores and was very impressed with how well organized and clean they were. This man's work made life easier for the average Israeli. What a tribute to him.
