Al Jazeera is currently marking the 40 year anniversary of the Organisation of the Islamic Conference (OIC) with a special program and reports. One of the featured articles in this series is entitled "OIC initiated Goldstone inquiry." The article consists of an interview with the secretary-general of the OIC, who right at the outset emphasizes in response to a question about the Goldstone report:

What I would like to put on record is that the OIC was the initiator of this process. On January 3, during the attacks on Gaza, we convened the executive committee of the OIC on a ministerial level. It was decided that the OIC group in Geneva should ask the Human Rights Council to convene and consider the possibility of sending a fact-finding mission to Gaza. The OIC was instrumental in getting through this resolution and thanks to the good offices of Ms Pilay, the UN high commissioner, that she formed this fact-finding mission headed by Judge Goldstone."

That is surely a worthy achievement for an organization that owes its establishment to an incident that, for the past 40 years, has served for baseless anti-Israel incitement: According to its own website, the OIC "was established upon a decision of the historical summit which took place in Rabat, Kingdom of Morocco on 12th Rajab 1389 Hijra (25 September 1969) as a result of criminal arson of Al-Aqsa Mosque in occupied Jerusalem."

Of course, then as now, the mosque and indeed the whole Temple Mount platform were under the authority of the Waqf, i.e. under Muslim authority; moreover, the fire was started by a mentally-ill Australian Christian tourist inside the mosque, where it was obviously the responsibility of Muslim guards to watch visitors. However, the arsonist not only managed to set a major fire, but was also allowed to escape from the mosque and it was only the efficient and professional conduct of the Israeli authorities that led to his quick arrest and prompt trial.

But of course, then as now, such facts were irrelevant. It is fascinating to read a Time magazine report from August 29, 1969 on "The Burning of Al Aqsa":

In their fury, many Moslems automatically assumed that the Al Aqsa blaze had been started deliberately - and by an Israeli. Hundreds of Arabs rushed to the still-burning mosque, threatening firemen who were trying to control the blaze and shouting 'Nasser! Nass-er!' When Israeli Defense Minister Moshe Dayan arrived on the scene, he was jeered. An Arab mob coursed down the Via Dolorosa - the path Jesus took to the Crucifixion - shouting 'Death to Israel!'

[…] The Israelis, who have ruled Arab Jerusalem since 1967, protested their innocence, but in vain. Premier Golda Meir convoked an emergency Cabinet meeting in Jerusalem to offer help in repairing the mosque (the offer was spurned) and to appoint an investigating commission that included two Arab dignitaries […] Sheik Hilmi Al-Muh-tasib, chairman of Jerusalem's Moslem Council, quickly summoned newsmen to pointedly announce that 'a blond, freckled man dressed in khaki, who did not appear to be a Palestinian,' had been seen fleeing from the mosque just before the fire. That was all the information that Arab propagandists needed. Cairo Radio called the fire a 'premeditated crime.' Al-Fatah, the Palestinian Arab commando organization, demanded shrilly in its broadcasts: 'Moslems, what are you waiting for? The Zionists are burning down your sacred shrines. How can you face the Prophet Mohammed?' Jordan's King Hussein, whose grandfather King Abdullah was assassinated by a Palestinian Arab gunman in front of the Aqsa mosque in 1951, called for an Arab summit meeting."

From the numerous examples that document the fact that this vicious propaganda lie has survived for decades, here's one from a website named "Al-Jazeerah" (not identical with the news organization) which claims to be devoted to "Cross Cultural Understanding":

Today [August 21, 2002] is the 33rd anniversary of the burning of Al-Aqsa Mosque by Zionist thugs. On that day in 1969 Zionist aggressors set fire to Al-Aqsa […] in an attempt to destroy all Islamic landmarks in occupied Palestine. Muslims all over the world remember this horrendous crime with great anger. Zionist gangs acted with the support of Israeli occupation forces, violating all laws, rules and international resolutions that provide the holy city with special rights and special status in order to preserve all its Islamic cultural landmarks. […] The crime of setting fire to the Al-Aqsa Mosque was part of the ongoing Israeli aggressions against the mosque. Israeli occupation authorities have consistently adopted an aggressive policy toward Al-Aqsa Mosque and the holy city of Jerusalem."

And so on and so forth - an endless repetition of the baseless accusations and fabrications that four decades ago provided the motivation for the establishment of the organization that now proudly claims credit for initiating the Goldstone report. How fitting, given that the Goldstone report has been shown to be similarly lacking in substance. (See e.g. here and here - and don't miss what's being billed as the "Debate of the Year": Gold vs. Goldstone.) But aside from Goldstone, it's business as usual - so no prize for guessing what the first item is on the OIC's current newsletter, published on October 28: "OIC calls for an emergency meeting to discuss grave developments in Al-Quds"

The Organization of the Islamic Conference has called for an emergency meeting of the Executive Committee at the Ministerial Level to be held on November 1, 2009 at its headquarters in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The meeting will convene to discuss the grave developments unraveling in the occupied city of Al-Quds and the unceasing Israeli aggressions against the holy Al-Aqsa Mosque and the Palestinians."

40 years ago I was among a group of soldiers sent to secure the gates of the Al Aqsa mosque after the burning and was under attack of incited mob. Facts were the least important on the inciters' agenda then and, unfortunately, now. It is clear that the motive behind these preposterous lies is a strong desire to destroy Israel and not to find the truth or a glimmer of hope for co-existence in peace. This is the only explanation to the theatre of absurd that we see. There may be other voices in the Arab world by they seem to get weaker over the years.

Perhaps if Jewish religous fanatics stopped crying for the removal of the "abomination" on the Temple Mt.. (even on the JP Talkback site) the Moslems wouldn't be so jittery about it. But apart from that, what does that long-ago Al Aksa fire have to do with Gaza, Cast Lead and Goldstone ? ?? Nothing with nothing ! The writer must be really desperate to make a case to engage in such silly mixing of apples and oranges.

It is no surprise that the conference claims credit for Goldstone. Mr. Goldstone seeks to become the next secretary general of the U.N. and he knows that he can not succeed without the conference's support. If joining in a defamation campaign against young Israeli soldiers is what it takes to get the job, Mr. Goldstone will do it.

1--Eli, fascinating to hear from somebody who witnessed these events; thanks for sharing your memories! 2--David: maybe if you had read the post with a bit more attention, you would get the point, which is that the OIC owes its establishment to spurious allegations of Israeli wrongdoing, and this has been their agenda during much of the 4 decades they exist; the Goldstone report, which they claim credit for initiating, is just part of this.

David in US - the Muslims made the same false claims in 1929 which led to the massacre of hundreds of innocent Jews by their own Arab neighbors. When the dust settled, it was obvious it was a lie but the Arabs continue to wave the banner of "save Al-Aqsa" to inflame hatred, and it works. In recent years, "palestinian" works inside the mosque created a bulge on the Eastern wall putting the whole compound in danger. They blamed the Israelis who were digging outside the wall on the Western side. Jordanians sided with the Israelis but hate is hate. THAT'S why the 2 are related.

Petra - the ultimate irony may yet play out. The wakf has undermined Al Aksa by clearing out "King Solomon's Stables" (probably Herod's or the Crusaders' stables, actually). Apart from the loss of archaeological artifacts, this has undermined the southern area of the platform on which Al Aksa stands. One decent earthquake, for example, and the southern wall could collapse and Al Aksa could slide into the valley below. See the map at: [ Link to page ]

Two State solution is barely preferable to status quo. Population disparities, not to mention geographic and religious differences, will upset any task agreed upon. Only respect and understanding - and Arab recognition of Independent Israel - can result in long-term peace.

The Goldstone report may be accepted or rejected but the point about Human rights is very important.Israel and Hamas have no right to shed innocent blood for their political supremacy.Life is GOD's greatest gift,In hebrew they say, every individual is a world in itself, if you kill an individual, you kill a whole world. The OIC may be shady in their dealings but the Goldstone report prepared by a respectable Jew is sacred.Don't throw the baby with the bath water.

God I wish Israel had refused to allow Muslims access when "the Temple Mount is in our hands". Better to have fought the battle in 1967 and blown up the entire place than this constant drip, drip, drip of arab hysteria every time the Imam's want to create a scene. William is correct, they are undermining those mosques themselves and I am praying daily that there is an earthquake! But whoa.. I got a very stern look when I told my Israeli guide, a paratrooper who fought in Jerusalem in '67, that they should have blow it up then.

Fact: Muslims blow up mosques. Jews do not blow mosques or any other religious building. Fact: The only state in the area where all religions are protected is Israel, including Islam. Fact: Non-Muslims in Islamic lands aren't safe and in Saudi Arabia conducting a Christian mass in a home is punishable with jail time or even worse. Christians in Israel are thriving while in the PA area their number are dwindling. They flee their home land just as Jews had to flee all Muslim lands now empty of Jews.

AKUS: Rafsanjani: "However, it will only harm the Islamic world. It is not irrational to contemplate such an eventuality." Mot only is he sick for making the comment, sadly, I can't help feeling that there are many in Gaza and the WB, who would obviously suffer as much as Israel, who actually approve of his comments, let along the ghastly contributors to blogs like the Guardian's CiF, where many seem happy to condemn the Palestinians to endless war and suffering in the name of destroying Israel.
AKUS: Pero, why is it that there is always someone so ignorant of the English language that they have to come up with the old rubbish about Jews and Arabs being Semites and therefore Arabs can't be anti-Semitic. You should consult a dictionary for the etymology (the source) of the term "anti-Semitism" as it is used in English before continuing to make a fool of yourself in public so that, as you say, "you know what the word actually means". As for "pathetic academic", Petra's research and knowledge of this topic is encyclopedic, so you should have some respect, specially given your ignorance.
Jay: If terror regimes like hamas and hezzbolah can use thier women and children as human shields and willingly send them to thier death as suicide bombs, then why not a suicide country? gaza and lebanon could be sacrificed by the Mulllahs in Iran, to achieve their goals of eliminating Israel and its Jews. is that far fetched? hardly, its exactly what they want...
