The Weekly Portion: Israel@60: Successes and failures

Last week was marked by the Independence Day celebrations of Israel's sixtieth birthday. The day's events were especially beautiful and moving. This day should also be a day for reflection and self-inspection.

What have we achieved in the last 60 years?

  • Almost half the world's Jews have made Aliyah. At the establishment of the State, only 6% lived here. Today, almost no Jew who wishes it, does not reside in Israel.
  • We've built a modern and strong economy. Israel holds the 16th spot in GDP growth and the 2nd spot, after the US, to have the most companies in the hi-tech industry trading on NASDAQ.
  • Our academic, cultural, scientific, and technological industries boast great achievements and place us at a most respectable position in the world.
  • We have a unique military power. Israel has the strongest military between the Caspian Sea and the Straits of Gibraltar, between Baku and Casablanca

What have we yet to achieve or where did we fail?

  • The welfare state that was built in the first few decades after the founding of this country, has been destroyed, but not completely. We come in as number 16 on the GDP per capita scale, but in education we are in the 39th place. With hospital beds per person we hold the 28th slot, a sign that government distribution is not accorded correctly.
  • The gap between rich and poor continues to widen while two education and health systems have been created as a result: one for the rich, one for the poor. The lack of inequality is particularly severe.
  • Social and moral norms, community solidarity, the willingness to give to society and to the country have all been eroded to a worrying state.
  • The opportunity to isolate the extremists, strengthen the moderates and reach an agreement that would end the Israeli-Palestinian conflict  was not taken to task after the change of leadership following Arafat’s death
  • We did not build a collective system that would protect the homefront from the rockets and missiles that could come from Iran and its messengers
  • We've still not managed to get Western democracies, particularly Europe, to deal with the Iranian nuclear threat in a decisive manner

Yes, there is much room for pride. The Jewish people do not have a better home than in Israel. However, the things we've not yet achieved,  and the need to correct where the country has failed, show us that we have a lot of work to do until the 70th Independence Day.

It's not failure of building system to protect homefront but failure to take the fight into enemy territory and overpower and disarm the enemy.. Today's Israeli leaders are mostly involved in scandals, void of ethics and thus the electoral system has to be immidiately revamped. Needed are more self-respecting, accountable to each and every one of the public G-d fearing leaders, unafraid to do what has to be done to make Israel a viable Jewish state.

What remains to be done? Reverse priorities. Security- first, Piece-second, and not the other way round. It means not negotiating away a scarce stratagic teritoral assetes like West Bank. No arab enemy state between sea and river jordan.Think first, second, third.....and tenth about your own people and only then about wellbeing of enemy who wants to destroy us.

Dr. Sneh I think you have a very selective memory bank! When you recount "yet to achieve or...fail" you have omitted rather a lot. Why have you not mentioned the failure in bridging the gap between lay and religious groups and the yawning gap between Jews and Arabs. Why have you not mentioned the failure to achieve the "sabra". Furthermore, Israeli society is fragmented between ultra orthodox living off state subsidies, religious nationalists defending to the hilt messianic Zionism and marginalised Jews from Ethiopia. Why can't you be honest and tell the true story?

YOU ARE RIGHT, THAT THE JEWIS PEOPLE DO NOT HAVE A BETTER HOME LIKE ISRAEL !!! BUT THE GOVERMANT AND THE LEADERSHIP COMMITING A NATIONAL SUICIDE ! YOU HAVE TO ADMIT THAT THAT NOT THE SAME ISRAEL AND NOT THE SAME PEOPLE THEN IT WAS IN 1948 . YOU DO NOT PLEASE THE ENEMY WHOM THEY WANT TO DESTROY YOU!! YOU HAVE TO DEFEAT THEM FIRST ! YOU NEED A STRONG LEADER LIKE JHOSUA BIN NUN !!

Isaac B: This kind of thinking is the only thing that will allow the Israeli Arab problem to be worked out. However they con only receive the benefits of being part of the stat if they take up full responsibility for the duties of the state. The distrust most people will feel towards them means that this type of thing should come in incrementally, and be pushed forward with the meeting of performance benchmarks.
Ken Besig, Kiryat Arba, Israel: Israeli Jews need a new leadership too, one that is Zionist, proud, and intelligent, unfortunately, Dr. Sneh, his Labor Party, and much of the Kadima misleadership doesn't have any of these qualifications and much of the time can be found financially and politically supporting the most dangerous and radical Israeli Arab leadership. Indeed, an Arab Knesset member from Sneh's own Labor Party refuses to sing or stand up for Israel's national anthem, and has even characterized himself as an Arab and a Moslem first and foremost, and lastly as an Israeli, and a Palestinian Israeli at that.
John Reilly: When Israeli Arabs show the same kind of loyalty to Israel which Druze Arabs and Bedouin Arabs have demonstrated, then, and only then, should they receive a fair portion of Israel's highly advanced political, economic, educational, and social amenities.
