The assassination of Yaakov Alperon in the heart of Tel Aviv, via a bomb planted in his car, is last week's major event.

The issue is not the identity of the murder victim but rather the lawlessness embodied in his murder.

Israel has several crime families; they are, for all intents and purposes, terrorist organizations. The war between them takes the lives of innocents who have the misfortune of finding themselves in the battle zone. Only a few months ago a mother was murdered  in front of her husband and two children on the beach in Bat-Yam, when was caught in the crossfires of a shooting aimed at some criminals in the area.

Yet the problem is not just that of the crime families and the battles between them. The Israeli citizen is no longer safe. Violence and brutality rule: on the streets, on the highways, in hospital emergency wards, in the schools. Everywhere, in effect.

This phenomenon is merely a symptom of a more general process - the decline of the State, the Government's abdication of its responsibility toward the citizen and his welfare. That is the situation in education, in health-care, in geriatric services, and likewise in internal security. For internal security too is a social service, and it too is being privatized. Expensive neighborhoods are patrolled by guards from private security companies; the wealthy have themselves and their possessions well-protected because they pay well. By contrast, the police presence in neighborhoods in distress and in the rest of the country is slight and powerless. It is a familiar fact that for a break-in or theft there is no point to lodge a complaint with the police. For severe cases of violence - only rarely is a substantial sentence imposed.

A fundamental change of mind-set is needed in all that concerns internal security. Criminal organizations need to be fought against just as the terrorist organizations are: with ingenuity and determination. The police have to be given the means and resources to deal with an increasingly sophisticated crime world. But even this is not enough. The police force has to be backed by a judiciary that is fully committed to the war against crime and violence. Sentences have to be stiffened and laws made harsher when crime and law enforcement are concerned. The police force needs the courts behind it, to carry out its job.

Only a government that reassumes responsibility for the welfare of its citizens, will also concern itself for their personal security, and fight effectively against crime and violence.

Don't go down that route Israel has enough trouble with Hama and Hizbullah on three flanks without the need for a fourth front inside the security fence with no clear lines.

I do not know-coming from Germany,I always admired israeli police for their close contact to the people, but once getting wounded by a knife-attacker I found out the weak spot of that Police force too -the Sephardi Policemen, say around Migdal Haemek,is getting talked out of the jo to easiliy,it is a menthality-thing,to try to settle things by talk-not paper work or direct action.Other thing was me standing alone in Jerusalem with 50 arabs around telling me, you fromGermany?Hilter is a good man ! I called Police, along came 1 Sephardi and was afraid to arrest, even to fill a complaint.Change that.

First ask yourselves why people get involved in organized crime? Beurocracy in this country is ridiculous and the ones who take risk are the ones that survive (somewhat). If the gov't itself wasnt so corrupt the people would not resume to such crime. I am not saying it is right but lets face the trueth, desperate times usually result in desperate measures what about israel sending weopons to gaza, who's murdering who?

Why did you wait till now to reveal all of this. As a political veteran you could have influenced your own party back then. A Jewish state without practicing Jews at the helm won't work and that's the whole answer.

Brian Sandridge CT, USA: If America won't even establish a naval blockade on Iran, and do all the other things mentioned above like economic boycott by the Anglosphere with maybe EU support, why would anyone believe that the US would retaliate with a nuclear strike on Iran. What if Russia places an "umbrella" around Iran? Will the US trade say Seattle for Tel Aviv? No, Israel better recall that only the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob has brought them like Wings of the Eagle back to the land promised their ancestors. Do not lean on weak reeds!
Daniel Gritsky, London: What's interesting is that americans tend to view guns and weapons differently than non-americans do. For instance, if you check out http://www.thegunpoll.com you can see a survey that clearly shows americans want to be in control of weapons much differently than internationals do. Pretty interesting
Lars, Mad City, USA: This is a joke, right? You can't possibly believe that the United States, the UN, or ANY other country is going to prevent Iran from getting their bomb? If it isn't already in the protective shelter, it sure will be. Dr. Sneh, you are correct that the powers in the United States, occupied as they are with a finanacial crisis, NEVER intended to do anything but talk about Iran and a Nuke. It is, as it always has been "an Isreali problem"...if not now, it will be. The UN and Europe won't lift a finger either. Peaceful men like you shall one day know that "talk" is only good for tea parties.
