Shai from Jerusalem: Good Morning, the 9th President

This morning, the 9th President of Israel, Shimon Peres, will walk into his new office at the official residence of Israeli Presidents. There has been no position in the political arena he has not held – Prime Minister, Minister of Defense, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Minister of Transportation, Minister of Communications, and the list goes on and on…

It would appear that Peres himself cannot remember all his past positions and everything he has accomplished. But certainly he has never entered into office upon such a strong wave of public support and sympathy. It seems as though the citizens of Israel were adamant this time to see Peres in the President’s Residence once and for all, after he had missed the same opportunity seven years ago.

Perhaps this is not the only reason. The last two Presidents, Ezer Weizmann and Moshe Katsav, were forced to resign from office before completing their full term, under circumstances which everyone would rather forget. Katsav did not even bother to attend yesterday’s ceremony at the Knesset, when his successor was inaugurated. Katsav himself will soon be appearing in court and pleading guilty to a number of severe charges, although according to the plea agreement he will not be facing imprisonment.

But the story of the day is without shadow of doubt Shimon Peres, who at 83 years of age will probably never change.

Yesterday, when stepping up to the speakers’ podium at the Knesset, he made no attempt to hide his opinions, and openly stated that Israel will need to make concessions on the road to peace. Many were not pleased to hear political statements made by the new President, but Peres will most likely be different from his predecessors. Peace is only one of the issues he will attempt to promote from the President’s Residence. He nurtures the vision of Israel as an empire of technology and high-tech, and the dream of developing the Negev, the Galilee, Jerusalem, and the Valley of Peace on the road to Eilat.

Peres will waste no time. He will travel the world as an emissary, seeking on one hand to promote peace between Israel and its neighbors, and on the other hand to raise resources and support for realizing his dreams. “Once,” he said yesterday, “I wanted to be a shepherd or a star-poet.” In the meantime, Shimon Peres became the 9th President of the State of Israel.

Kicked upstairs. Not out of action yet, sure to try to interfere with whatever administration is in power. A reminder that 1) Israel does not need a President, and 2) Israel does need Members of the Knesset chosen by local constituencies. More accountability, not less; more democracy, less elitism.

Why do you say he has "a strong wave of public support and "the citizens were adamant to see Peres in the President's residence"? Did we the citizens have any say in the matter?

God morning, mr President of the 9th of Ab, You are now old enough to concentrate on the essential, and forget all illusional power-strugles. Do simply rush, Mr President, rush to implement the restoration of the Temple of Jerusalem on its authentic site indicated to David by YHWH (www.jerusalem-4thtemple.org) In that case, and in that case only, YHWH will recognize you as President of Israel, and will welcome you proudly when your terrestrial time comes to an end. Saul has the right idea. Wars are won by crushing the enemy's will to resist or by rendering it impossible for resistance to be a viable option. The U.S. has forgotten all the lessons of the 1930's and 1940's as well and thus has failed to win decisively in most conflicts from Korea to Iraq. For Israel to be secure, Hezbulla and the lot of Arab-Palestinian "resistance organizations" must be fully destroyed by a massive and complete effort. Syria must pay for it's continued support of terrorists and Iran must be nuetralised (maybe with U.S. help?). The Lebanon war last year revealed vacillation and weakness and accomplished little for the long term.

Shai, instead of be worrying about any small issue like that you better start worrying about the WHEN (not IF) Jews, and Israel, start REALLY HITTING BACK!

Asians - an others - will have to move back to where they come from! That's a thing that WILL happen! You, nor those closest allies of Israel, will be able to stop or prevent that. THAT'S what's already going on, and we are well into the phase running up to War. Big War!!

And this time it will be BIG!!! BIGGER than before! Hopefully that War aswell can be limited to the Middle East, and perhaps the Arab Peninsula aswell, but there isn't any guarantee that it will be limited to that region alone. It is already a fact that worldwide people - who are either pro or against the one, or the other, and have chosen side, in this - are that (emotionally) involved in a War that they (too) see as theirs that it will be a MIRACLE, if that war limits itself to just the Middle East!

Likely (or probably) it will extend in no time, to the different parts of the world where this issue already is Main Issue for many Religious Zealots. That does include the Usa and Europe aswell.

For in both countries there are Islam Fundamentalists who already - while it is still a sort of Cold War - they are doing all they can to get other people involved in this as well. They try and they're more and more successful in an attempt to make people choose side too.

About the "short hand" - it is not the Army's failure, it is all due to politicos at the top. Kassam-builder Ahmed could've been dealed with very simply and easily. But Olmert and others before him preffered to sit in the corner shielding head with both hands and loudly crying oi-vey! instead of giving the Ahmed his full due and throwing him out of our Jewish National Home back to Arabia where he richly belongs!
