Louis The Scooterer: SAR-EL: believe it or not...you better believe it Posted by Louis the Scooterer

There was a time way back when "I knew little" and altho' I was a successful smalltime window fixer I knew little about "living in Israel" and nothing about "volunteering in Israel".. And then one day I heard about Sar-El, and that was the beginning of a changing of my life.
Like being at meals on time and learning to say "shalom and boker tov".. and at the meals to empty our plates and help wash the dishes.
Suddenly the quietness of a threesome became an exciting noisy 50 people.
and also volunteers are included to raise the flag and then gather around for newstime from our madrichot. Also at that base was a catering division where young male and female soldiers are taught to be cooks..And one night there was a party catered for by these learners..Buckingham Palace or The White House or even Hollywood don't get such a magnificent spread as this party...what an honour that we volunteers were invited...and the stories mount..
Don't forget that every volunteer should have a chance at "kitchen duty", allowing to mix with the cooks and chefs and mess hall workers.. And the friendly broom and mops are waiting. Wow what a welcome, by the commander and his staff and the volunteers!
One volunteer brought a trumpet to flagraise.
There will be thousands of individual stories, and many volunteers will come again..often, and always there are cameras clicking away.. taking pics.
I mention here that many volunteers are Christians, who do this for their love of Israel, and they also make value friendships that last for years. And what hit me hard...IS !
THANK YOU SAR-EL... and a BIG THANK YOU, PAMELA.

I participated in a Sar-El program on my first trip to Israel in March of this year and will definitely be back for more! What an amazing experience--a chance to get off the beaten tourist path, contribute something to Israel and meet wonderful folks from around the world.

Lou,
How wonderful this sounded ahd how happy you sounded.
I'm very honored you shared this with me. What little I've learned about Israel has been through you. Unfortunately, I'm one of those American's who can't see much past America unless it's a place I've been to.
You're a lucky man and I'm lucky to call you friend.
Thank you and may you have a blessed day!
Shalom.
Dusty

Reply to #3..Alex & Ruth..wow, what a great comment you place on this Sar-El story. I'm sure that NO ONE ever forgets the volunteer experiences, and on this program there were some from Florida.
Thanks and stay in touch.

reply to #5 Hi Russell, again you are observant, and yes I will do more Sar-El. Many volunteers are somewhat older than me, and many say they should have done so years earlier. SO I say to you..look into it and maybe we could be at the same base doing some "easy going" jobs.. and not worrying about crazy drivers outside on the roads.
Thanks and keep in touch.
Lou.

I've done Sar-El a couple of times. Last time I followed it by attending HonestReporting's summer Mission, where I met a couple of other people who were also Sar-El regulars. Good work folks

I AM A 78 YEAR OLD CPA. I CLOSED MY OFFICE SO I COULD PARTICIPATE IN APRIL 2008 AS A VOLUNTEER IN THE SAR-EL PROGRAM.
ALTHOUGH I DID CONTRIBUTE TO ASSISTING ISRAEL IN IT'S CONTINUING TIME OF NEED, I WASS BLESSED IN THE NEW FOUND FRIENDSHIPS I MADE WITH OTHER VOLUNTEERS FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD - MANY WHO ARE CHRISTIANS THAT SUPPORT THE STATE OF ISRAEL.THIS WAS MY FIRST SAR-EL PROGRAM BUT I HOPE NOT MY LAST. AFTER THE SAR-EL PROGRAM I WENT TO THE TOWN OF SDEROT TO ASSIST WITH THEIR PROGRAM FOR VOLUNTEERS TO ASSIST THE RESIDENTS WHO ARE UNDER DAILY "QUASSAM MISSLE" ATTACKS.

Reply to #11 Yale hi, I sure admire a man like you for your efforts. I'm glad that your first Sar-El program was so rewarding, and that you will do more in the future. It sure was a great pleasure meeting and chatting and working with you...and with all the other volunteers...and the Sar-El people involved.
Hope to see you sooner..rather than later !
Thanks.
Lou.
