Borrow / spend / waste / throw away.

It is amazing how many people waste money by leaving so much food uneaten!

This is a short roundabout story about me taking pictures...and about money...and food.

Once I was at the beautiful gates of Bahai Gardens in Haifa and I asked a man to take a picture of me and my scooter. He did, and he asked me for money. I didn't know the language, so I never gave him any money.

Another time I volunteered to take a few pics of a touring couple, with their camera and they were so happy, they offered me money. I did know the language. I did not take money.

"So, where is this heading"?

Okay..A few days ago at the Jaffa fleamarket, I was taking a picture of myself looking in a mirror...

A man's voice behind me said "you're beautiful" (maybe he was referring to the beautiful framed mirrors?)

I asked what he meant, and we became "friends".

And after a little chat, we swapped email addresses, and became "email friends". A few days later, we met for a coffeechat.

"So what's that gotta do with money"? I'll tell you.

So David explains to me in good English about obtaining a loan for a new business, or expansion of a business here in Israel and anywhere in the world, (but not for buying a home) what with language differences and procedures and complications and results.

I once wanted some information about "taking-a-loan" but I gave up before even starting.

Even though I may never need a loan, this information is important to know about. SO I listened carefully to what David was saying, and now I have a pretty good idea of what needs to be done.

Over a few years, several people had previously asked me if I had dealings, or knowledge with banks for "getting a loan" and always I had to shrug my shoulders and say "I dunno."

NOW, I can point them to the right person who will explain..SO google to thewebLender and click on David S Fisher, and send him an email, and once you connect, he will get the ball rolling.

I pretty much understood what he described, and what he said, and he is fluent in English and he says his Hebrew is always improving, and he has his office in a beautiful, picturesque village.

And when you have the loan in your hand, I will take a picture of you.

                                                       ____________

And now a story about the "wasted money" that I see, wherever I go.

So many people waste so much food.

I still can't believe how much food is thrown away by eaters who don't finish what they order, at a restaurant or any eating place.

Every so often I watch on television or read in print about many families here in Israel, that are living under the poverty line, and many children going hungry.

I have seen tons of food left in plates on tables in restaurants and coffeeshops, and can correctly assume that this will be thrown into the garbage.

I understand that some restaurants and caterers, give away the unused food to various charities who collect, and distribute to less fortunate people...

But here I talk about the 'uneaten food'that I see while I sit in an eating place.

Surely the eaters could take home the unfinished portion of pasta or slices of pizza, or chicken or whatever and perhaps to give it to a wanting person.

One time, a woman and young girl of maybe 10 (assume mother and daughter) left the table and never returned, leaving a full plate of beautiful fresh salads, a large omellette, slices of cheeses, several bread rolls, pasta, salad dressings, butter and jams, an almost full large glass of orange juice and another half glass of coffee.

NOT to my surprise, I saw another young couple, man and woman (same restaurant different day, different table) (anywhere in the world they would be referred as 19 year old kids)...leaving behind a similar amount of edible stuff after both finished drinking their large glass of beer, and while the local cat wanted to help himself, it was shooed away by a waiter.

My guess just on those two sightings, is that 4 children could have had food for a full day from off those two tables.

NOW, I don't frequent restaurants and expensive eating places every day. BUT I can safely say that everytime I visit such a place there are people who leave amounts of assorted foods, including pastries and cakes. SO if I use my common sense, I believe that hundreds of people every day leave hundreds of plates of good delicious food that ends up in the garbage.

I, personally will ask for a doggy-bag to "take-home" what I don't finish, and every time I do that, I get some sort of  tray with my leftovers, and my feeling is that the restaurant staff are happy that the food is good enough to be "taken home" to finish.

For the purpose of this writing, I visited 6 different restaurants in the same city, each in different neighborhoods, including industrial areas, between 11a.m and 3 p.m. on a random working-day, and sure enough I didn't need to wait a long at any place, to see plates of assorted stuff being cleared away from the tables. Hardly ever will you see an empty plate.

(And another story another time is the amount of good clothing that I see 'thrown away' in the garbage)

Lou,very informative...you should see the amount of food that is wasted by school children here, it is amazing. They prefer sodas and candy over any other (food) thing. Their parents seem to be oblivious. Lou,perhaps this is why we have such dangerous auto drivers...WOW a new understanding...poor food habits=poor driving habits.Scoot on,R

Russell hi, ya got me thinking now...I watch carefully where I drive and I in an eating place I sort of watch what people eat... and then I SEE what they waste..yes probably those food-wasters are BAD drivers who dont see what they waste and probably dont look where they drive..(and I guess some poor folk don't have vehicles to drive and not enough food to eat ) WOW...You too carry on enjoying your 2 wheeler. Thanks. Lou

So right, take leftovers home.'Waste not want not'. In Australia , 2nd hand charity clothing & furniture shops accept donations of everything from used clothing to cutlery & sell them on to those who have not got the money to purchase new items. Not all people donate money... therefore they have the option of donating goods. The Charities then have an income to help those even less fortunate-food vouchers, furniture, they run phone help lines (eg suicide prevention) etc. This way we recycle & contribute in assisting those who are less fortunate & struggling.

Went on a 9 day cruise last year & they threw out about 4tonnes of food daily. Because of the choices people piled food on plates & left most of it only to try something else....It was depressing knowing that this amount of food could feed entire African villages for months.

Try asking at the Municipality where there are centres for homeless, or safe houses for mothers and children. Then collect in plastic boxes (potatoes in one meat+ chicken in another)the left-overs from the towns eateries/restaurants and deliver to these homes. They will need this every day, so try and get people around you, out-of-work to help you.

MK -Australia # 9 & 10 its a "mad mad mad world"...ooops I mean a "waste waste waste world"..yes there are such charity shops here in Israel as well..I was connected to one as a volunteer..and I have seen "new arrivals" who have little (perhaps nothing) receiving many good items of clothing and household assorted items crockery cutlery etc..and thats very good. Thanks for following and commenting. Lou.

MK -Australia # 9 & 10 I have also seen, in so-called "poorer areas"..mountains of good clothing dumped near garbage containers...as well as parcels of food placed for "any people" to help themselves ? and also I have stopped taking pictures of unfinished food on plates, every time I visit an eating place..depressing, but true and we will never change that. Thanks for following and commenting. Lou.

anne-Herzalia, # 11 Good suggestion you offer. Personally I think that people need to be taught NOT to waste and take home the leftovers OR to order a smaller helping. I once volunteered to help a delivery unit who took food to senior citizens, but I was told "we're full". A thought just entered my head..MAYBE ALL FOODS ARE TOO CHEAP WHEN BUYING ?? I WONDER ?? Thanks for commenting. Lou
