Rosner's Domain: Why human rights watchdogs go after Israel?

Statistically proven: Human rights organizations are biased - and Israel (and the US) is their main target.

Take a look:

Six years ago, we decided it was time to systematically examine the accusations flying from all directions. After subjecting human rights organizations' work to a barrage of statistical tests, we found that everyone was right. Yes, the watchdogs have biases... We listed each organization's top 10 "hit list" of countries reported on for the 1990s. Human Rights Watch's most written on countries were, in descending order, the United States, Turkey, Indonesia, China, Russia, India, the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, Sudan, Israel, and Burma. Amnesty's hit list from 1991 to 2000 was similar, including the United States, Israel, Indonesia, Turkey, China, the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, Britain, India, Russia, Rwanda, and Burundi (there were 11 countries because of one tie). Size seemed to matter, since large countries such as China, the United States, and India received more scrutiny than others. Policy relevance and newsworthiness also counted for something, pushing Turkey, a key NATO ally, to center stage.

Why Israel? Because...

for better or for worse, is the way the news game is played. The media report on issues or countries it thinks readers care about, and advocacy groups of all stripes respond in kind, creating the virtuous (or vicious) cycles that drive public attention.

 The numbers are all here.

Why do human rights watchdogs go after Israel? As the article clearly explained: because these NGO's (Amnesty International, HRW, etc...) are common prostitutes. They sell anti-semitism to the highest bidder (as Whitfield from HRW did with Saudia Arabia).
2  |  Terry - Eilat, Israel, Thursday Nov 05, 2009
#1 Sally. Money is only part of the reason, although not a negligible part. Over a long period of time, these organizations were taken over by far left radicals who saw Western civilization as the culprit for the world's ills. These far left radicals allied themselves with the causes of the Third World, revolutionary movements, & eventually, Islamists. They duped liberals with their phoney rhetoric & this incliudes much of the media. I believe someone called this the ''Palestinianization'' of the Left, possibly this was the term used by Bat-Yeor to describe the change in Dhimmi Europe.
3  |  Terry - Eilat, Israel, Thursday Nov 05, 2009
#1 Sally. Initially, Israel was viewed favourably as the under-dog. This was also when Israel was seen as a socialist experiement, romanticizing the kibbutz movement. This changed dramatically after the 1967 war. Israel came to be seen, not as the victim of Arab aggression, but as a powerful military force, an oppressor. Israel became identified with America, the capitalist scourge. These people just love ''victims'' & they cannot bear the victory over what they consider the poor, innocent Third World. This is, of course, quite selective viewing. They ignore the horror of 3rd World regimes.

We tend to forget that during the 'troubles' in Northern Ireland the UK got a lot of flak over its treatment of IRA 'terrorists' -- if I may use that word. Human rights for terrorists was a major concern. Were they political prisoners or pow's ? That they were guilty of premeditated murder didn't seem to matter to the 'watchdogs'.
5  |  Sally - U.S.A., Thursday Nov 05, 2009
Terry, the purpose of these NGO's is to go areas which have closed societies: where there are no checks & balances, no independent judiciary, no free press, no transparancy. Because free democracies have these mechanisms, they are constantly self-checking. As the article admits, these NGO's do not even bother to go to closed societies with the absurd excuse that they cannot get in. (I think Sharansky would laugh at that line.)
6  |  Gábor Fränkl, Thursday Nov 05, 2009
Sally, not "Whitfield", but Sarah Leah Witson is the correct name, (who vendored in human rights powerhouse Saud-Arabia). Otherwise, agree.
7  |  Sally - U.S.A., Thursday Nov 05, 2009
I would like to add, that because they no longer even attempt to fulfill their purpose, i.e. go into closed societies, they go into the open societies and play a mental, legal gymnastic game to "find" abuses when there are none. Case in point: white phospherous - which is legal. Case in point Goldstone: where he assumed that because there was death, the entire operation was intentionally directed at the civilian population - when he does not have evidence of his assumed intent. The NGO's yell the catch phrases without telling the whole story.

Inhuman rights activists, amnesty international, stop the war brigade all come under one category ANTI SEMITES all funded probably by their "mummy and daddy's cheque books"to fill their bored sad lives.Send them to really help the poor and needy and they'll cringe away from it, send them to march in countries like iran to stand with the REAL reformers seeking human rights for their people who are still held down by tyranical mullahs who keep their people in a 6th century mode of life..Oh no hizbullah thugs might "hurt" or worse "Kill them" Soft targets like Israel they like.
9  |  Terry - Eilat, Israel, Thursday Nov 05, 2009
#5 Sally. Indeed, going to the closed societies is dangerous, they much prefer safe targets for their self-righteous hypocritical moralizing. They're not interested in putting their lives on the line, these are not the bravest people around, after all. Hardly to compare with someone like Sharansky who is a real mentsch, among many other true heros who made sacrifices for freedom. These are just spoiled whining creeps, moral midgets.
10  |  Steven, Thursday Nov 05, 2009
You are preaching to the converted. Open your eyes JPost readers! JPost readers are right wing Israelis and Zionists. Nothing wrong with that but you are blind and always fail to see the other side. Just a thing to say: 282 confirmed children murdered and more than 700 civilians. How can Israel not even care for those children.. Have you ever thought Israel might be country which breaks a lot of laws. It does not take a scientist to figure out somethings are just wrong. Like cutting out water to Gaza or sending rockets by Hamas, or the number of children brutally murdered.
11  |  Dan J USA, Thursday Nov 05, 2009
Tom and Lydia..you two Jew haters should get together and I'm sure Lydia's womb would soon produce the AntiChrist"! Just think you will have produced the greatest Anti Semite the world has ever known..well maybe second to Hitler! Speaking of that bastard, you two probably have his picture on your wall. "Ich hult der b aydi in mine tuchas"
12  |  JimUSA, Thursday Nov 05, 2009
Note that during the 1990s, Sudan received minimal attention from HRW and AI, although Sudan was then in the midst of a ghastly civil war that killed over 2,000,000 people, mostly non-Muslims.
13  |  Shel Zahav in Jerusalem, Thursday Nov 05, 2009
Sally brings up great points. Unfortunately, when we look at the heads of these so-called watch-dog groups, we very often see a Leftist Jew running things. As we were warned in our Torah and by many rabbis throughout our long history, Jews who leave their religion often turn on their own people with a vengeance. The names of apostate-murderers is a blemish on our peoplehood. We have such cases with Rome, Spain, Russia, and other countries where former Jews turned against their own. Today, we have people like Uri Avnery who do the same here in Israel.
14  |  Tom, US, Thursday Nov 05, 2009
You people are like the 3 monkeys, see no evil, hear no evil and speak no evil. Could it possibly just have something to do with using WP munitions over a heavily populated civilian area with over 1400 dead ? Only 330 of which were enemy combatants ? NO not us, we didn't do it ! That's why last December you were all screaming for more blood and the deaths of every single person in Gaza. Then you stupid F's wonder why people compare you to those terrible nasties from WW 2 fame. To the one moron regarding NI - at least the Brits were actually going after IRA. See the difference ?
15  |  moron galut, Thursday Nov 05, 2009
because human rights, animal rights, women's rights , global warming, the 'peace' movement are all hiding places for collectivists whether socialists or national socialists-israel is a nation apart
16  |  Paul, US, Thursday Nov 05, 2009
@ Tom, USA - It's well documented that these terrorist organizations hide behind civilians. It's a win-win situation for them. If Israel attacks, they look bad in front of the world press. If they don't attack, they look weak. And as far as people calling for the destruction of Gaza... I hadn't heard that. If it's true then it's unfortunate. But I do hear a lot of Muslims calling for the total destruction of Israel, and I have for years. If you're going to condemn one side for a stick, don't turn a blind eye to the forest on the other side.
17  |  Saul, California, USA, Thursday Nov 05, 2009
Tom (14) and Steven (10) should know their history. There were civilian deaths in Israel, but I categorically reject the claim that these were the objective (ask the Hamas cowards to wear uniformas and stay away from civilian ares). If you want to talk about war crimes, here's a list: 1- white settlers in the US who gave smallpox infested blankets to the Indians, then stole their lands;2- Britain and the US, who carpet bombed Dresden in WWll, knowing that they would kill mainly civilians; 3- A-bombs on the civilians in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, etc. Can't blame these on Israel, though.
18  |  Tom, US, Thursday Nov 05, 2009
11 | Dan - The only problem with that rant Dan is that the beast of Revelation is going to come right from your tribe and be crowned your king on the Temple Mount. So point fingers outward but it also says in the bible that by their work and works you shall know them. The only work and works that I see coming from your tribe is one war right after another in your ongoing theft of land from the indigenous people of the middle east. Your incessant Islamophobic rants. Which is nothing more than a racist chant of us against them. The KKK had absolutely NOTHING over the tribe. You take 1st place!

Jew haters, Jew haters, Jew Haters is why. Goldstone fantasizes of a second Shoah - that is why he made up this report. We all know the kind of Jew he is: a self-hater who wishes to please the goyim above all. Justice, shmustice!

I was seriously surprised to see Rwanda and Burundi on the "Top 10" hit lists. I didn't know that either had enough 5 star hotels to make them worth investigating! Burma (Myanmar) is no surprise considering its well developed sex tourism industry. But I would have expected to find Denmark and the Benelux countries on the list. Just think Jyllands Posten, Geert Wilders and King Leopold's ghost, and the fact that they're all rich first world countries, with caucasian Christian majorities. They MUST be responsible for inumerable human rights offenses!
21  |  James, London, Friday Nov 06, 2009
Why do human rights watchdogs go after Israel? Did you consider that this is because you abuse the human rights of millions of Palestinian every day? Amazing how blind some people can be.
22  |  TEK NY, Friday Nov 06, 2009
The feeling that Israel is always picked upon is created by media coverage that recognizes that this will generate world wide interest and contraversy. Who cares about Barundi? It is far better to rebut the accusations robustly and with detailed facts than to worry about unfair frequency of the negative comments.
23  |  Elizabeth, Friday Nov 06, 2009
Could it be because those 'watchdogs' are, well... dogs? And dogs tend to do their master's bidding. Finding out who sent their dogs after one is a good prevention of further savaging. Find who pays those dogs, and you will find your answer.
24  |  Richard Pearce, Calgary, Alberta, Friday Nov 06, 2009
NGOs fill in the gaps that governments leave. which is why those countries that are otherwise immune to criticism come in for so much attention. When the US government loudly and strongly criticises, when the media loudly and strongly criticises, the human rights group have a choice, spend their money doing the same thing, or look at what's being overlooked If you're fighting the dark, do you point your flashilight in the same direction as the megawatt searchlights, or into the corners they miss?

I live in Norway many years. It took me long time to know the system up side down inside - how realy things work here in Norway. And let me tell you that all those people who are sendt to Israel as wachdogs or to the USA, from Norway, this are usually disturbed people! Any fool in Norway can open an organization and call him self "human rights" (ye righ...), then send the papers to the goverment to get economic support. Then publish for recruting. Any fool can be recruted. If one have antisemitic ideas - it`s just what they`re looking for. Then they hide the ideas under academic words.

What has bombing the water treatment plant of Gaza got to do with fighting 'terrorism' ? OR for that matter bombing the only flour production facility in Gaza ? There were NO Hamas hiding at these places. OR even bombing 200 factories in Gaza. Absolutely NOTHING to do with fighting 'terrorism' OR self defense. OR even bulldozing the chicken farms and orange groves ? The deliberate destruction of the infrastructure as well as food production capabilities of Gaza had absolutely NOTHING to do with fighting 'terrorism' OR self defense of Israel. Israel signed the1949 Geneva conventions.

Three thories... First, because they are mostly financed by arab petro-dollars. Second, because there is no penalty to pay for fanning anti-jewish, anti-Israel sentiments.Doing so against the true human-rights violators like China, Russia, the Saudis, Egyptians, Sudan, Somali etc. etc. might be a danger to life and limb... Thirdly, it is well accepted in most of Europe: after all, showing Jews as violators of human rights can only appease the conscience of the bloody murderers of jews in Germany, Poland, Ukraine, France .etc.etc. and the silent supporters of Nazis, such as the Swedes, etc.

Re#2 Mr.Terry - Eilat,Israel. The 3rdW0rld is not called such for nothing.Early60's it was correctly called "Underdeveloped World" although it's deemed p0litically inc0rrect.So it was decided to change to "In Development World"& later to "World Capable of Development".The fact remains that the first appellation is the correct one.Its problem is not economical but political. Its leaders are the richest men in the world and its peoples the poorest.Israel's crime is for not being part of the 3rd w0rld.Not because Israel is a rich country, just for lack of a 3rd w0rld mentality.

#31 Tom, I am not backtracking on my opinion of the NGO's & the Goldstone report & at the risk of having Terry & Mike stone my verbally, I do believe that Israel should conduct its own independent investigation into operation Cast Lead ( but not the IDF as that is being investigated already within the Israeli structure) for the following reasons: 1. As an open society, the actions of its government should be transparent & open to its citizens to view. (although military, intelligence, etc... would of course be kept private for security reasons) & if its citizens have questions, as they appear
44  |  Sally - U.S.A., Friday Nov 06, 2009
(con't) to in the press, then the citizens deserve an answer. Your questions could be answered in the IDF inquiry which is already in progress, but if not, then a separate inquiry would be appropriate. 2. I disagree with many things that Goldstone did in his report, like his doing an opinion piece on the west bank which had nothing to do with the matter, but the things that he (Goldstone) did wrong should be shown. 3. If the report went to the UN security council, nothing will come of it. My concern is if it were taken to the ICC by other means.
