Some American columnists now better understand why Obama has little chance of acheiving a lasting peace in the Middle East very soon. Here's David Brooks: In this new game, both sides seek the destruction of the other, but neither has the power to achieve it. They are engaged in a struggle that has no near-term practical end. The extremists' goal is to kill as many Jews as possible and wait for God (or Iran) to kill the rest. Israel's goal is to restrain the brazenness of the extremists until their movement somehow burns itself out or is destroyed from within Arab society. Israel's realistic immediate goal is not to achieve some permanent resolution, but to merely suppress terrorism week by week and month by month. And here's the very smart article by Anne Applebaum: That brief, halcyon period of the Oslo peace process was possible because this is precisely what happened: A combination of Russian emigration into Israel, the end of Soviet support, and general weariness led at least a part of the Palestinian leadership to conclude, after 30 years, that it would never push Israel into the sea. At least a part of the equally weary Israeli leadership came to believe that their occupation policies were doing them more harm than good and that they would gain more from negotiating than from fighting. Further negotiations will make sense only when Hamas' leadership - currently emboldened by a combination of popular indignation and Iranian support - finally arrives at the same conclusion as its secular counterparts, and a new generation of Israelis is again convinced to believe them. And for those still wondering whether a Likud government or a Kadima government (or Labor, for those who believe in miracles) will be better for peace: I believe that all three Israeli candidates in this round - namely, Netanyahu, Livni and Barak - would probably sign these two articles without much reservations (but I didn't ask).

Peace, what peace! Peace is an illusion. Hamas has repeatedly affirmed its commitment to the destruction of the state of Israel and no amount of bombs is going to alter that. Neither is any amount of diplomacy. Hamas rejects negotiation as a legitimate form of struggle against the state of Israel. The attack must go on until Hamas is eliminated. Go IDF, go for it, and go for the jugular vein of the Hamas. The Hamas are running scare and now they are sending delegation to Cairo seeking ceasefire. Keep the pressure on.

A victory can only happen if a side surrenders. Right now, there is no one representing the Palestinians to surrender or negotiate. So all it takes is a few thousand people out of an ungoverned population of millions to terrorize Israel. If the Palestinians had a government, a state, then it would be able to wage war, accept its inevitable defeat, and impose terms of surrender on its own population. As long as Arab Muslims continue to propagandize for the destruction of Israel in the most antisemitic terms, there will be no peace. While Israel may find it inconvenient to have so many of its own people reaching out to the enemy, at least these open-minded attitudes promote thoughtfulness and an appreciation for intelligent solutions. Defeat Hamas and another enemy will replace them. Israel wants to see this as an external problem when in truth it is an internal problem. It is not a civil war for the Palestinians are not Israeli citizens (and Israel wants to keep it that way) but it is still very much an internal problem.

Seems as though only Palestinian caualties are reported by the media. Very little on the terror that has stalked Southern Israel in the form of Hams rockets.

Please explain. I've never heard of an entity that has elected leaders (representing the people, no?), officers, police, land, a common identity in their eyes and in the eyes of the world, organizes attacks against it's neighbor, and yet it is said that they don't have a government or a state. Why, if they can declare war upon their neighbor, can their neighbor not declare war upon them? Here is my daughter's assessment of the situation: The Israelis have the power to kill all the Palestinians but will not use it, Hamas doesn't have that power, but if it did would not hesitate to kill all Israelis if it did. The sad truth is that many Westerners - and many Jews - want to believe that Hamas, Hizbollah, etc. are rational, that their rabid statements somehow mask a more sensible, practical enemy, one who can be dealt with across a table.
