Shame on me for linking to this story two days later than I should have. Eli Lake found some very interesting evidence connecting Trita Parsi to activities that ought to be seen like, well, lobbying for the Iranian regime (who's Parsi? why is it important? read more here and here).

Here's a paragraph from Lake's exclusive story:

Mr. Parsi has been called to the White House, lectured at the CIA and visited Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton. He boasted in internal e-mails that he learned of Mr. Obama's speech to Iranians on the occasion of the Persian New Year in March several hours before it was posted on the Internet.

Much of NIAC's less public work has come to light through e-mails, documents, board of directors meeting minutes and strategy memos that were made public as part of the discovery process during a current defamation lawsuit against a critic of the group

Law enforcement experts who reviewed some of the documents, which were made available to The Times by the defendant in the suit, say e-mails between Mr. Parsi and Iran's ambassador to the United Nations at the time, Javad Zarif - and an internal review of the Lobbying Disclosure Act - offer evidence that the group has operated as an undeclared lobby and may be guilty of violating tax laws, the Foreign Agents Registration Act and lobbying disclosure laws.

And here's some of the latest reaction. Ron Kampeas  is somewhat skeptical:

--Finally, the suggestion that NIAC and Parsi have somehow run afoul of the Foreign Agents Registration Act requires the kind of expansive interpretation of FARA that exists only in the fevered imaginations of isolationists at IRMEP -- the premiere purveyor of the calumny that AIPAC is a fifth column.

Goldfarb (as should be expected) is not at all skeptical:

Of course, I'm sure Parsi's defenders will not be troubled in the least by the fact that he is so close to an Iranian official, Zarif, who is brazenly violating U.S. law in a scheme to funnel money to the Iranian nuclear program. Nothing unusual or shady about that -- who doesn't have friends overseeing illegal real estate empires that are used to fund the nuclear programs of hostile, authoritarian regimes?

Enjoy the battle? Stay tuned - I hear that this is far from over, and that more revelations are to come, and pretty soon (in a week or two - when it's practically over - maybe even the NYT will feel the need to write something about it).

Can anyone be concerned about this bias report when the Israell Lobby & AIPAC controls Washington. eg. See Walt & Mearsheim`s book "Israel Lobby": It was the AIPACers Wolfwitz,Perle,Feith,Edelman,Wurmser,et al in key Pentagon posts & Libby et al in the WH that created & spread the lies that reved up US public support to invade Iraq. A war that only Israel benefitted from & wanted. Israel is not worried that there is any real competition to their control. This is just part of their standard propaganda fog blanketing the US that "Israel is good, Arabs & Iranians are bad" .

what Israel has to worry about most of all is the lydia and Tom Lobby that seeks to encourage POTUS to donate US citizen's tax $$$$ to his Islamist brothers the PA to finance terrorism.

It should come as no surprise. While the focus is always on the Israel Lobby, almost nothing is said about the Islamic Lobby which has far greater impact & no shortage of willing (for money) collaborators through-out the American political system, including at the highest levels. If the extent of this Islamic Lobby's influence was given the same attention in the media as the Israel Lobby, most Americans would be outraged. While America & Israel have many shared national interests, the same cannot be said about the Islamic countries who are, at best, hostile to America.

Now that's a juicy bit of gossip! I can't wait for the next phase. Will they attempt to tie in Chinese or Russian front companies, I wonder? It will be interesting to see how far this goes...

NIAC was originally established in 2002 to represent the interests of Iranians who supported the Shaw. It is conceivable however, that their organization could have been penetrated by Iranian militants throughout the years. Such claims require evidence to be supported as well as significant ties to establish any illicit lobbying since as I understand, NIAC has always sought negotiations between the US and Iran from its inception. If such ties exist much of the Iranian US community will be scandalized by its revelation.

Duncan Lennox, Neither Canadian nor Christian...a Muslim hack borrowing a name, for no self-respecting Canuck would stoop to the Fascist lies and smears he's promoting. Hey Mohammed, aka Dunc, get yourself a one-way ticket to Tehran. Maybe if you're lucky, you'll be about a mile from Ground Zero when Israel decides to take care of you and your fellow Fascists.

I must thoroughly disagree with Chris. First of all, the question is not what NIAC is seeking with the US, but whether or not it is a lobbyist. Noone at NAIC has registered with the Justice Department as a lobbyist or as a local agent of a foreign government. The undregistered lobby group may be guilty of violating tax laws, the Foreign Agents Registation Act, and the Lobbying Disclosure Act. Their activities include creating a media controversy against Dennis Ross' National Security post. NAIC claims that US-Iranian interests include many things other than Iran's desire to acquire nuclear CONT

Chris CONT weapons and the removal of sanctions against Iran. Contrary to supporting supporters of the Shah, NAIC is opposed to US funding of groups favouring a democratic process in Iran. I am not saying that there is anything wrong with these activities, these are the things that lobbyists do. But they are lobbyists. They should be properly registered and their activities should not be clandestine. AIPAC is criticized daily for its infuence as a lobby group. Let NAIC at least admit that it is a lobby group.

But the difference between AIPAC and the NIAC is simple AIPAC is registered as a domestic PAC is the NAIC registered as a foreign PAC?NO

Lobby, shmobby. Politicians have no honor and are always for sale. All the Congressmen retire multi-millionaires. Every one of them.

hmm, let's see. if our little brother israel shares so many national interests with us, then why is it that more israelis have been caught spying on the U.S the agents from any other country in the world? this incudes, Chinese, Iranians, Russians, and anyone else who might be "hostile" to us. israel is becoming more of a burden on us day by day. I would rather have outgood country be on good terms with the islamic country who mainly hate us for supporting israel. This is the best way for us to stop terrorisim. we also need to stop writing israel a welfare check. america first.

To Mike Feldman 7&8: I am not disputing whether or not NIAC is acting as a lobby. It is important to recognize, however, that evidence is required to support such accusations. It is necessary to prove that individuals within the NIAC envelope have been acting in their capacity as NIAC representives while pursuing NIAC objectives. One can make all sorts of claims but proving them is quite different. Whether NIAC has or has not been involved is an unresolved issue and NIAC retains all its legal protections until a court of law determines otherwise. Disagree if you must, but see the point.

#13 Chris. In my post I said that NAIC "may be found guilty " etc. I agree with due process. The fact I was pointing out was that they very much appear to be acting like lobbists, without being registered lobbists. Time will tell if they are considered to be violating any laws.
16  |  David USA, Tuesday Nov 17, 2009
# 9 Mark. It is another "victory" for "The Lobby" that AIPAC gets away with being registered as a domestic PAC when it so clearly, for all intents and purposes, acts like a foreign PAC
17  |  Gideon539, Tuesday Nov 17, 2009
#1: wow you couldn't be more wrong. The Israelis have been pushing for the US to deal with Iran, not Iraq. In fact the Israelis stayed out of the Iraq discussion precisely because they did not want their emphasis on Iran to piss off Bush. Anyways, what was the only country shooting at US troops when Bush took office? Iraq. What country was stealing billions from Oil 4 Food? Iraq What did every report the US govt did about Iraqi Intent conclude? Saddam was weakening sanctions so he could rebuid his capacity. US Govt Iraqi Perspectives Project "Saddam Tied to Terrorists" Islamic & Secular

Response to Sidne#12 Your claim that more people have been imprisoned in the US for spying for Israel than for Russia,China,or Iran is a LIE.Only Pollard was convicted of spying for Israel following a despicable plea-bargain double cross.Nozette was set-up by FBI agents pretending to be Mossad-another despicable act.And your idea of getting into bed with the Muslims is dangerous.(See Maj.Hasan.)
19  |  Mike Feldman, Canada, Tuesday Nov 17, 2009
#16. David. Your post suggests that you are fully aware of the activities of AIPAC, and that American Jews should be registered as foreign lobbyists. Neither is true.

The Israel Factor, Sep. 2009: Obama is rapidly losing favor with panel of Israeli experts

Chris USA: Adina Kutnicki you are too extreme, making a mockery out of justice in the process! Israel's leadership is caught between a rock and a hard place because the 1st prisoner swap created this precedent which is now a mill stone around the neck of the government. A way must be acheived to end this practice without undermining public support for the government. Logically that means the public votes to determine the course of action on Gilad Schalit. Anything less calls into question the democratic nature of Israel. The vote should also include a measure to prevent future occurances.
soulpower sweden: "41attacking the messenger,as usual, rather than the issue.the swedes used to be an extremely well developed democracy;they took controll of their religion and made it apolitical. in the name of democraccy they then allowed huge influx of a foreign religion...in the name of democracy todays swedes are refusing to take controll of this foreign religion, so the foreign religion is taking controll of sweden...causing extreme disharmony and developement of extreme right.same problem as israel:democratic right used to destroy democracy.uncontrolled religious right is todays trojan horse
