Comments: 59      Cathy Young is cleaverly re-framing the "war crimes" allegations against Israeli forces in Gaza. That is, because she does not dismiss all allegations against Israel, but rather tries to put them in the right context: Some of the reports of the Israeli war crimes against Palestinian civilians, and of instigation of atrocities by fanatical rabbis serving with the Israel Defense Forces, came from taped conversations in an Israeli pre-military academy. This academy is run by one Dany Zamir, who publicized these allegations (later dismissed as based on hearsay). Zamir is a former officer in the Israeli military who served a brief prison term in 1990 for refusing to follow orders to protect settlers who laid wreaths at Joseph's Tomb in Nablus. In an essay published in a 2004 book about Israel's conscientious objectors, Zamir described the Israeli state as "anti-democratic" and asserted that collaboration with it was "illegitimate, unjust and immoral."
Can one imagine a man who publicly voiced such sentiments about Hamas heading a preparatory military school -- or, for that matter, surviving very long -- in Hamas-controlled territory? Clearly, the answer is a resounding "no". And Young's conclusion: [W]hen the United Nations and international human rights organizations claim that some Israeli soldiers have used Palestinian civilians as human shields, one cannot help noticing the lack of outrage over the fact that Hamas does the same thing systematically. Not, perhaps, in the literal sense of forcing a young boy to walk ahead of its fighters, but in the pervasive sense of hiding its fighters among noncombatants and its military posts behind hospitals and schools. And when the Israeli military is condemned for delaying ambulances transporting the wounded, one cannot help wondering why the condemnation does not include terrorists who turn ambulances into targets by routinely using them for cover. This does not justify soldiers' misbehavior (I'm not sure if such misbehavior occurred - though I suspect in some cases it did). But it does differentiate between a place in which misbehavior is the unwelcome result of war, and between a place in which the authorities initiate and orchestrate the actions against which all decent people should protest.

OK, placing things in 'context', still waiting the 'context' regarding bulldozers destroying the chicken farms and orchards. Also 'context' regarding white phosphorus shells being fired over heavily populated civilian areas (like using a sledge hammer to swat a fly). Sounds more like the 'context' was ethnic cleansing of the Palestinians 1st and then attempting to create 'context' later. Still waiting for the release of the video tapes of the questioning of the IDF who brought forward the allegations.

What IDF experiences right now at the hands of international media is a clear and, alas, just retribution for its treatment of journalists during the operation. Look, you can't decide to behave like Russians in Chechnya and get away with it. Closing off the whole border area? Refusing interviews and access? Let's provide some more 'context' to what transpired in Gaza. How about the complete lock down of Gaza for over 16 months prior to the event ? Land, sea as well as air. Nothing allowed out OR allowed in. Now that wouldn't have anything to do with anger building inside the Gaza concentration camp now would it ? Possibly resulting in rockets being fired ? But we are not supposed to look in that direction now are we ? I had a blog going regarding this blockade quite a few months prior to the invasion of Gaza by the IDF. But that makes me a Nazi or an antisemite right?

One of the reasons for the lack of condemnation of Hamas use of human shields is that it basicly remains an israeli claim without much evidence to back up it up. Again one of the things foreign reporters might have cast ligt on had the been allowed to enter the Gaza strip.
Also there is a difference between a rag-tag army that uses human shields and a real army that have any numbers of high tech equipment at it's disposal, but still lowers itself to use civilians as human shields,

My blog was as factual as it can get. I had news stories with explicit details regarding what was going on in the 16 months which led up to cast lead. Plus I kept up with the stories all the way through cast lead. Had their been a proper professional and fullly independent investigation, a warning could have gone out from allied and Jewish leaders, calling on Jews and Romanic people to resist the deportations.

Jens, there were plenty of foreign correspondents in Gaza but they really enjoy living so their reports are sometimes not that accurate. There were films shown of rocket fire and fighters operating inside of the cities among the buildings but you will claim that they are not real, just Israli propoganda.
Some day visit Israel, it will be eye opening and something that you will find hard to handle.

There is no religious basis for modern Israel. Even Israeli archaeologists agree that the ancient Israelites were native Canaanites and that there was no Exodus from Egypt , no invasion by Joshua.
