Comments: 46      A week ago - when AIPAC supporters were shocked to report that they were told by Rahm Emanuel that "the efforts to stop Iran hinged on peace talks with the Palestinians" - Emanuel denied, sort of. Using the good services of his Atlantic friend, Jeffrey Goldberg, Emanuel (or someone wanting to help him) could make sure that the record straightened out: Rahm apparently did no such thing. I have it on good authority that Rahm told the audience that Obama believes that it will be easier to enlist Arab allies in the confrontation with Iran if visible progress is made on the Palestinian front. This is inescapably true. But he did not suggest a quid pro quo. That would be blackmail. The case of James Jones will be harder to deal with: "We understand Israel's preoccupation with Iran as an existential threat. We agree with that," the senior official was quoted as saying by AFP. However, Jones went on to stress that the Iranian threat only reinforces the need for peace in the region. "By the same token, there are a lot of things that you can do to diminish that existential threat by working hard towards achieving a two-state solution," he reportedly said. This is troubling for three reasons: 1. It's rubbish. A TSS isn't going to "diminish that existential threat". 2. It makes Israel a hostage: get a TSS or face existential threat. The problem is that for a TSS to materialize a Palestinian partner is also needed - a party that doesn't exist. 3. Even more troubling: Israel faces the "threat" - Palestinians don't (the Iranians do not threaten them). This presumabely means that Israel is the one who should worry about the TSS more than the Palestinian leadership. This also means that Palestinians might not feel as pressured to compromize, and might think that they are in a position to demand more concessions from Israel. 4. And what if a TSS isn't within reach? (as most experts believe is the case) Would Jones still work to "diminish" the threat? If you want more, I wrote about the "linkage wars" here.

The fact remains that many of the complications regarding peace in the ME are directly being caused by Israel and until action is taken to mitigate the situation with the Palestinian people the US has bigger fish to fry.

Apparently, General James Jones does not understand what the existential threat to Israel is all about. The threat is not the possession by Iran of nuclear weapons per se. It is the possession of nuclear weapons by religious fanatics who according to Bernard Lewis cannot be deterred and who are eager to use them. In this context James Joness claim that the two state solution would somehow diminish Irans desire to start a nuclear war in order to bring back the Mahdi, the hidden 12th Imam is preposterous. As everyone knows well, what Israel needs are true democratic governments that are not ruled by tiny, rabid, single-issue extremists, because they need to own at least 60 of the 120 Knesset members. Israel conveniently forgets that if it were not for your insistence that there be Palestinian elections several years ago, which put Hamas in power, Hamas' recognition of Israel would be irrelevant. Why can't you see that by constantly trying to control and manipulate events in the Middle East, you are only creating more problems for yourselves? If you would, for once, just do what is right (not only what is right for Israel, but what is right PERIOD.), you would see that peace is not as elusive as you think. But until you do what is right regardless of what your enemies do, you will suffer.

The purported "linkage" is a red herring. We know the U.S. wants a comprehensive Middle Eastern Settlement, or at least an Arab Sunni/Israel settlement which entails almost complete Israeli withdrawal and a Palestinian State. What Netanyahu will insit on with Washington is that the process of implementation is honest and real. If Obama accepts that, (and why O would go for pressure, when his whole approach is to not pressure or be pressured!), the ball will squarely fall into the Arab court. If O opts for pressure in Israel's case only, Israel will stand up to the pressure.

Although we know that 78% of the American Jews voted for Obama based on traditional democratic proclivity, his promises to be a "true friend" of Israel, & the anti-Palin factor, Obama risks losing that populous to a determined more moderate GOP in the next go-round if he doesn't protect Israel. Jews may be less than 2% of the electorate, but they all show up to vote, run the media in general, & advise in very high political offices, hold numerous seats in congress, & lead in science & art. No delivery, no 2nd term!

The Arab countries cannot achieve peace with one another, much less Israel. In Lebanon, Syria and other Arab nations, Palestinians are treated as sub-human.
