Rosner's Domain: Should Obama start with Israel-Syria?Posted by SHMUEL ROSNER
Comments: 13 Aaron David Miller's advice to Barack Obama is somewhat better than the advice Obama was given by the Scowcroft-Brzezinski duo a week ago. But it is still incoherent in many respects. The older guys want Obama to start with Palestinians first; Miller wants him to start with Syria first. He is right in saying that "there's no deal there" as far as the Palestinians go, and he makes the case forcefully. But since something has to be done somewhere, Miller turns his attention to Syria, and before he even starts negotiating, he is already willing to make some concessions: The White House would have to be patient. Syria won't walk away from a 30-year relationship with Iran; weaning the Syrians from Iran would have to occur gradually, requiring a major international effort to marshal economic and political support for Damascus. So, why even bother now? Still, an Israeli-Syrian peace treaty would confront Hamas, Hezbollah and Iran with tough choices and reduced options. What "tough choices" is he talking about? I can't say, because Miller doesn't specify. He does talk about the hard choices the two countries will have to make: Israel, on the "extent of withdrawal from the Golan Heights," and Syria, on "normalization and security" - normalization being the extent to which Syria will let "peace" to be "real peace," and security being, well, Miller doesn't say. It's a short article - maybe he didn't have enough room to make his argument in full. And maybe that's why the word "Lebanon" does not even appear in this article. Not once. As if the U.S. no longer has any interest in Lebanon's fate. Those who weren't around in the last four years might have forgotten, but one major reason the Bush administration was never enthusiastic about an Israeli-Syrian peace process was the feeling among American policy makers that what Syria is after is not the Golan Heights, but rather the Shouf Mountains. There hasn't been any indication that priorities have changed for Syria, but maybe Miller believes that it is the U.S. that needs to change course - namely, to abandon the idea of free Lebanon. I guess we'll have to wait for the longer article.

Miller should take one more breath and keel over, and in the meantime it wouldn't be a bad idea if his other buddy in self-hate, Danny Kurtzer went and joined him. For Miller and Kurtzer, and to a lesser degree in the case of Dennis Ross, who occasionally shows some semblance of intelligence, its always promote the Palestinians and who gives a hell for the lateral casualties, i.e., the people of Lebanon or the Jews of Israel.
Chimpie be damned. We don't need the Bush I-Clinton Arafat cheerleading rethreads any more. If you thought the Neo-Cons were bad, these pro-Fatah scum are much worse.

I should think it obvious by now that America and the West have abandoned Lebanon. Demographic change brought about Hezbollah's rise to power and the only thing that could replace it in the near term is a similar organisation. The Syrians were simply smart enough to exploit that to their own advantage. Since reversing Hezbollah and Syria's dominion in the near term would require forced demographic change it is impossible to get rid of them without HUGE human rights violations (which nobody should support). Israel will simply have to balance Hezbollah out somehow.

As Iran implodes economically Syria may end up being fpr more cooperative again to make a deal to save
itself from its own economy self destructing The key i think is maintaining oil prices low

Obama has more inportant things to do than get involved with the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, at least during thefirst year of his presidency. So, the best thing he can do is wait for the new Israeli government to settle in and give Bibi time to build a coalition that can actually govern the dysfunctional Israeli public. The dysfuncyional Palestinian leadership has to stabilize as well. Right now, neither the Israelis nor Palestinians have their act together. Obama is no fool. He will soon realize that no one in the Middle East wants peace at the price that would have to be paid today.

Most people, even those in Israel, have forgotten, how the Syrians, used the Golan Heights, to rain mortar fire, on Jewish farmers in the Huleh Valley. Possession of the Golan delayed Syria, from overrunning Haifa, in 73. Now we are asked to return our victory, soaked in the blood of Israeli soldiers to an enemy, who won't even release the bones of Eli Cohen, hung in 65.
Tell me, Mr. Olmert and other lefties, what does Israel, receive in return, other than a worthless piece of paper, that nobody will enforce.

we seem to be under the impression that Jews,Christians,Muslim and others a predisposed to hate one another. its a learned thing and where all to blame and its up to all of us to find the solution.we must not delude ourselves into thinking that it will just get better. no people we must make the same concerted effort to repair the problem as we do in creating it . trust me when i say god did not do this to use we did it to ourselves.

I have a terrible feeling of doom concerning the middle east. Israel will receive no help & no support from DC for at least the next 4 years; I am praying for you.

I am Israli, from birth, came to USA in '45 after father died to fight for Israel as a nation. We now have a monster president in Obama who will let the Middle East Arab/Muslims murder and kill all the Jews in Israel. I do not understand who has cut the heart out of our Nation of Israel to let it give away so much to the murders of Hamas and allow them to terroize them over and over again. Israel will have to regain its pride, and honor and stop believing in the lies of peace from Iran, Syria, Jordan and the rest of the liars who want to kill all the jews in the middel east.

It is me again, I am so angry, and I have so much to say, that there is not enough room for someone with a real hope and prayer for Israels safety to write responses with all the fear and doubt about This Guy Obama who is nothing more than a Thug and Bully that hypnotized a bunch of stupid people to believe in the magic elixir of the fountain of youth, and now America is going to pay for its stupidity and so will all the hopes and dreams of free countries around the world who relied on America. My Great grand parents were killed in Russia, my Grand Parents were killed in Germany. Part 1

Part 2 - My father was killed in Palestine in '45 in the fight for our nation of Israel, my mother came to America with me and my sister. I have heard the stories from my mother who died at 92 and I am now 63, and nothing has changed in the middle east, Iraq, Iran, Syria, etc, have not changed in hundreds if not thousands of years, their goal, no matter what treaty is signed, no matter what conference is held, no matter who it is, who says or does it, they want to kill and wipe out every Jew in Israel and anywhere in the world. Someone needs to open their eyes to the truth and see this.

It is a shame that everyone in Israel believes a lie. The US now that Obama is in will not support you. you better wake up and smell the coffee, you must rely on the G-d of Israel for your strength. It is time for CHANGE.
