Rosner's Domain: Samantha Power and the "mammoth force" in Palestine

The blogsphere is buzzing once again over Samantha Power's views on Israel. Power, the influential Obama advisor who had to leave his campaign after calling Hillary Clinton a "monster," and revealing that the candidate does not really intend to leave Iraq in haste (now we know she was telling the truth), is back. Not a surprise to those even remotely familiar with the Obama circle of advisors.

She's back, and with her comes concern over her past comments regarding Israel. "Both Ms. Power and [new National Security Advisor] General Jones have supported a role for international forces in the West Bank, whether UN or NATO, a concept that is anathema to even left of center Israelis," writes the American Thinker. Eric Trager writes in Contentions, "This announcement will likely upset many in the blogosphere - including some of my Contentions colleagues - who previously exposed Power for her foolish statements and writings on Iran, Israel, and Iraq." (Trager does try to be positive and expresses the hope that Power will play a role "as a key adviser in constructing a diplomatic strategy for providing relief" to Darfur).

Since I was one of few people who had the opportunity to interview Power about her views on Israel, when she was attacked by pro-Israel writers during the campaign (not long before she had to leave) - and since most Power detractors do bother to remind us of all her sins, but refrain from quoting the more reassuring remarks she's made, I thought it is only fair to go back and refresh readersÂ’ memory.

Here are a couple of paragraphs from the article I wrote after speaking with her. In this part of the interview, Power addresses the comments she's made regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict:

In recent weeks, a young and talented writer named Noah Pollak, who writes for the right-wing magazine Commentary, has delved deeply into Power's statements on record. Among other things, he found the following things she said, in a 2002 interview, about what should be done to stop the Israeli-Palestinian conflict: "[It will] mean sacrificing - or investing, I think, more than sacrificing - billions of dollars, not in servicing Israel's military, but actually investing in the new state of Palestine, in investing the billions of dollars it would probably take, also, to support what will have to be a mammoth protection force, not of the old Rwanda kind, but a meaningful military presence."

In that same interview, Power said that the situation will "require external intervention." Pollak very reasonably interpreted this as an expression of support for a "ground invasion of Israel and the Palestinian territories." Otherwise, he wrote, what did she mean when she spoke of "a mammoth protection force"?

Power herself recognizes that the statement is problematic. "Even I don't understand it," she says. And also: "This makes no sense to me." And furthermore: "The quote seems so weird." She thinks that she made this statement in the context of discussing the deployment of international peacekeepers. But this was a very long time ago, circumstances were different, and it's hard for her to reconstruct exactly what she meant. Anyway, what she she said five years ago is less important that what she wants to say now: She absolutely does not believe in "imposing a settlement." Israelis and Arabs "will negotiate their own peace."

Shmuel, what (seriously) do you think that she would say to you! One of the best known bloggers in Israel. Comments that might create controversy for her or her future boss? Come on, you're an old hand. You know better! Surely one should look at her ideology and her inveterate worldview, one that she has been steeped in and has purveyed widely. A cursory review of this and of her long standing comments on how to address international conflict, will surely disabuse your readers of any fatuous remarks made to you to cover herself. When coupled with Jim Jones and Susan Rice - oy!!!

SAMANTHA POWER SAYS OF ISRAEL, SHE DOES NOT BELIEVE IN IMPOSING PEACE. SAHKESPEARE SAID, 'A ROSE BY ANY OTHER NAME..." AND JIMMY CARTER BRAGGED, 'EGYPT AND ISRAEL DID IT ON THEIR OWN." EMULATING CZECHOSLOVAKIA, 1938, AND HITLER DID IT ON THEIR OWN."

Shmuel, you are a naughty boy. You are trying to pull the wool over the eyes of unsuspecting Israelis, and all those who care about our homeland. I heard the interview myself and I can surely attest that I did NOT 'misinterpret' her comments. She was VERY clear in what she meant, and she is in favor of foreign boots on the ground to IMPOSE a solution, even US boots if necessary. Since you seek to be one of the 'go to' boys in the press of the middle east it is very clear what your motivations are-even if it means leaving fellow Jews twisting in the wind. I KNOW what I heard......

Power will continue to be a liability in the Obama camp. She has proven to be a loose cannon, more rooted in academia and theory than in real life. Israel must stand tall and strong - the treatment of settlers for example is a disgrace - Israeli soldiers arresting Israeli teenagers - unbelievable. Be strong, be clear. Leave teh academics to the universities

Put those foreign boots on our ground and we will put those boots underground! Let obama and his advisers even think this and he will be impeached by a very large majority of both democrats and republicans. Anyhow by 2012 the White House and both houses will be firmly republican.

Hot on the heels of the return of Power is the report that the Chimp has hired Danny Kurtzer as his special envoy to the Mid-East. For those of you, especially those of you in the 78 percentile range who voted to kill Israel, Kurtzer was one of the "Jewboys" who worked for Jim Baker when he uttered his famous remarks "F the Jews". With Power and Malley on board, the guy who was funded by Soros and by Hamas will look for any so-called "Jew" to do his dirty work for him. Ask Kurtzer how good those Empire Chickens taste after Power and Jones send in the USMC to fight the IDF.

"mammoth protection force" - how about just explaining what she means by "protection force"? much less, mammoth....why should we trust anyone who makes statements that they themselves cannot explain? what a loser this Power is. we dont need more losers, who do not know the history of the conflict. weak Obama goverment ala. bill clinton, will give us more bloodshed. when will they understand, that after the holocaust, NOT ONE JEWISH LIFE will be left in the care of any foreign party, goverment or quasi-state.

Just wondering, while the Palestinians insist on lobbing rockets, grenades, sending suicide bombers to destroy whole families and squander billions in aid - will the Obama clan put pressure on the Pals to behave or just protect them as they continue to kill Israelis, as the UN does in S. Lebanon? With such an ungrateful population as the Pals, does Power feel equally that a "mammoth" force is necessary in Darfur, or is it to hard to care about or just isn't apropos?

Be realistic - no matter what Powers believes, actually, no matter what Obama really believes (if he believes anything), it will be Israeli politicians that screw us - and this has always been the case, no matter who was in the White House. It is our own home-grown delusional leftists & the corrupt & incompetent self-interested collection of useless parasites that infest our political establishment. Need I name names? Like Shimon Peres, Rabin, Ehud Barak, Olmert, Livni, Ramon, good grief, the list seems endless, so don't worry about Powers & her meshuggas.

and the same 78% will vote for him again in 2012; nothing will keep American Jews from voting Liberal, Democrat, even to the severe detriment of Israel

Powers mentality is exactly that scares me about the Obama advisory group. And I voted for him. Does he have those that really think the USA (or Israel) can make peace with these crocodiles of Jihadi Islam? Will Obama bring in Brezinski, Malley., Carter, et al Israel detractors. Even Hillary probably thinks that we USA can negociate with Hamas and their ilk. The events in Mumbai tell us all in the West what we are facing...a total all out war! I hope I am wrong..I really do. Israel is our "barometer"...what happens to Israel will happen to our Democracy!
16  |  Simone . - Jerusalem, Wednesday Dec 03, 2008
Sol D - why in hell did you vote for Obama, knowing, as you did, who his advisors were? It's a bit late to start worrying now, don't you think? You - and all the American Jews who gave Obama their support, should have thought of this before. Simone
17  |  Debbie, Wednesday Dec 03, 2008
Sol D you, others were fooled or you just did not care. You and others obamaites have cursed us with Obama and his minions like Powers! Once again we'll tolerate another Carter administration's blunders! Another embassy takeover? You cannot negotiate with terrorist. Many lives will be lost. How many more orphans like Moshe will we see. Terrorists, all terrorists, whoever, Islamist, IRA, McVeigh, I don't car, they all need to be hunted down to the ends of the earth arrested or killed. I am sick of these wimps like Obama!! We need someone with courage to stand up to terror.

Samantha Power is on the transition team, not the cabinet. So, for now, who cares?
19  |  Sol D USA, Wednesday Dec 03, 2008
Debbie and Simone..in my opinion....there will be no Foreign Troops on Israel Soil! And maybe, the Obama team will soon understand the crocodile mentality of Radical Islamic Jihadis as they "negociate" with them. And Debbie...I hope you in Israel get rid of your WIMPS too...like Olmert! Where is Moshe Dyan, Eshkol, Meir, and Ben Gurion when we need them. This I;ll tell you...if Mexico lobbed rockets into Texas ...there would be hell to pay in Juarez and Mexico city...talk about wimps! Be well..we all love Israel.

I saw a TV clip of Powers being interviewed by somebody or other & she was very hostile towards Israel. So much so that, if I understood her words correctly, she actually suggested that US forces protecting the 'palestinians' should attack Israel if we did something improper (protect ourselves?). Nice person she is NOT & if this is the sort of Leftwing fascist Obama surrounded himself with, & perhaps still does, then Israel's in for a bad, lonely time. As for US Jews, some will oppose such policies but others (Ultra-Lefties like Noam Chomsky, Richard Falk, Norman Finkelstein, etc) won't

Face it...more and more American Jews don't really care that much about Israel anymore. It's not that important to them. Or at least it's not reallly on their radar screen when it comes to voting. They care more about abortion rights, the environment, ending the war in Iraq. Like most Obama supporters, American Jews are self-centered, self-indulged and wrapped up in their own lives and interests. The McCain slogan, "Country First," had real meaning, but it did not mean much to American Jews and other Obama supporters. America's changing and so is the American Jewish community. Sad to see...

Anne Schwartz: Dennis Ross is a disaster! It has been reported that he made the following statements in effect: "Israel must give up the Golan Heights to Syria. Syria has been 'quiet' quietest border, etc., etc. God forbid Israel should be pressured to sacrifice Har Golan. Syrian barbarians harbor hamas/hizbullah with arms supplies; they are in a state of war with Israel and demand UNCONDITIONAL...NO COMPROMISE 'RETURN' OF GOLAN. Israel's main water supply emanates from the Golan. For a piece of useless paper, Israel should sacrifice the Golan's vantage from above the Galilee for artillary tank fire!!
