Rosner's Domain: PEW survey: almost 70% of American Jews marry other Jews

Believe it or not, according to the new PEW Religious Landscape Survey, almost 70% of Jews marry other Jews. That's much higher percentage than the one we get from other sources - more focused on Jews. Nevertheless, these are the numbers PEW have. Take a look:

Other interesting findings - all of them aren't revolutionary - to be found here:

Jews, much more than other Americans, want the US to be involved in world affairs.

Except for people affiliated with Black Churches they are also the most Democratic religious group.

They find it difficult to say that they believe in God, even though many of them are "fairly certain" there is one. That's Jewish.

Update: Take a look at the new post I've just added on the same topic.

Good news, if accurate. Now, if efforts were made to make conversion easier & even more efforts made to reach out to the children of mixed marriages, our demographic decline might be stopped.
2  |  Edger Milliband, London, Monday Jun 08, 2009
Ronni, the biggest threat to the world comes from Israel, a country that is hell-bent on territorial exapansion, and building a Talmudic empire extending from Cyprus to Iran. The last time such a schem was contmeplated was in 1939 when the Third Reich sought more Lebensraum for Germany...just as Israel wants more "settlements" and Lebensraum..for Jews. In fact, Israel is more dangerous than Nazi Germany. Israel has at least 200 nuclear warheads.
3  |  Avi Kadduri, Monday Jun 08, 2009
The Jewish population is in decline because more and more Jews are ashamed of Israel, the Jewish state. Who wants to be associated with a country that murders children by the thousands and then claims that the murder is justified on the ground of self defense? Israel and Zionism are really killing Judaism. In 50 years, Jews will be a rare speices.
4  |  Aaron Batsri, New York, Monday Jun 08, 2009
I think Jews have to revert to the old days..when the rallying point was morality, justice and human decency. As a rallying point for Jews, Israel has proven to be a huge disaster. Israel has effectively morphed Jews from a morality-consicous people into Nazi-like hilltop settlers, land thieves, child killers, home demolishers, and oppressors of weak and helpless people. Shame.
5  |  Reuven Dressler, Monday Jun 08, 2009
I had no idea that such lunatics read the Jpost (see talkbacks 1, 2, 3, 4....). Doesn't the Jpost have people that proof the talkbacks?
6  |  Chuck, University of Southern Illinois, Carbondale, Monday Jun 08, 2009
Reuven Dressler, calling those who differ with you "lunatics" underscores your fanaticism and intolerance. You must recognize the fact that a growing number of Americans, including myslef, don't like what Israel is doing. We simply can't accept Israeli criminality and genocidal policies in Gaza. Exterminating thousands of innocent children as Israel did in Gaza recently is wrong, immoral and criminal. We will not lose our soul for Israel's sake. We must not and we will not allow a few Nazi-like settlers in W.Bank determine America's morality.

A state that promotes homosexuality, as Israel obviously does, is not a Jewish state. This is an evil state. Read the Torah and see for yourself. As a Jew, I want to have nothing with such a state. I wonder what so-called religious posters would say bout this?
8  |  Leslie Fraser, Monday Jun 08, 2009
Sorry #6 but I agree with Dressler. Where are you people getting your info, Aljazeer?!? Israel killed thousands of children in Gaza recently? Wrong. Israel has killed 1000's of armed Hamas. Yes children have been killed but are not targets. Where are your moral reprimands for palestinians who point weapons at my children??! Israel wants to expand from Cyprus to Iran? Wrong again. We simply want to exist along the current borders and has been SHRINKING in the past 2 decades, not expanding. I doubt any of you have ever been to Israel, probably never even met an Israeli. Very uneducated remarks.
9  |  ina-scotland, Monday Jun 08, 2009
I think it's great that the jewish people marry their own kind as it's totally scriptural.Unlike #7 who calls Israel evil then I would question if he was a real jew. I'm scottish and proud to be scottish and I'm married to a scot, but like EVERY nation we to have people here who promote homosexuality but that doesn't make me call my nation evil ,maybe the ones who promote it but not my nation, and even if I went to live in america I'd still be true to my beloved scotland.

please leave israel alone, if anyone reads the bible, its says in genesis the 12th chapter, "i will bless those that bless you, i will curse those that curse you", this comes from the Almighty God! why must anyone blame Israel for whats happening in the world toda? back off man!! as it is Palestine doesnt belong to the palestinians, it ancient Judeah, and this rightfully belongs to the jews.
11  |  Joseph London, Monday Jun 08, 2009
Did I miss something? Most posters seem to be responding to a different article, not about the rate of intermarriage among American Jews. Regarding the 'thousands of Pal children killed in Gaza' I seem to have missed that. I thought there were 1,300 deaths of which about 900 were Hamas militants and 400 were civilians -- men, women and children. Regarding #7 Israel does not 'promote' homosexuality or same sex marriage. Israel is a democratic state that tolerates 'alternative' lifestyles', much as the USA or EU.

It is one thing to possess an accurate and truthful knowledge of a subject and it is quite another to be a ranting lunatic, utterly devoid of factual knowledge or purposely defaming by lies and slander. By that commonly accepted standard comments #2,3,4 and 6 are the work of lunatics.
13  |  Chanya, Israel, Monday Jun 08, 2009
Wow-many of the previous comments prove: 1) the compelling need for Israel to exist, because with people like this in the world (Jewish and non-Jewish), the rest of us Jews need someplace we can go; and 2) the compelling need for Israel to do a better job conveying, not just its message, but historical truths. I have rarely seen so many mis-facts stated in such a small space as the previous posters. If you hold such strong views, please at least make an attempt to become educated on the issue. So many things you've stated are objectively untrue. Which reduces your comments to inflammatory lies.
14  |  Eric, New York, Monday Jun 08, 2009
This is directed at Chuck and at Edger. Both of your comments are highly distressing to me, an American Jew, who is as dedicated to the state of Israel as I am to human rights and Palestinian sovereignty. However, it must be clear that Israel does what it needs to in order to secure its population of over 7 million, including 1.5 million Arabs, 78% of whom would rather live in Israel than in any potential Palestinian state. Israel has not exterminated anybody, and of the just over 1000 people that were killed in Gaza 70% of them were terrorists. Get your facts straight before being radical...

In addition, in response to Chuck and Edgar, Israel's settlements are on such small tracts of land in such a vast landscape that you cannot possibly be serious in claiming that they are seeking to enlarge the state by an proportions. According to the 1947 Partition Plan, at its most narrow point, Israel was only 11km. This is clearly not a sustainable border, and therefore small changes must be made to that map. However, in know way are the settlements now serving any purpose other than to provide a better security situation for a state surrounded by hostile neighbors and "friends" alike.
17  |  Suzanne, Tel Aviv, Monday Jun 08, 2009
J.Post, if there are no letters worth printing then don't print any. Response 1 is topical at the moment to anyone living in Israel. As for the rest, iIt would appear that the nutters have crawled out of the woodwork - judging by responses 2-7. The UK, one of the bulwarks of the EU, is beginning to resemble Italy economically and electorally. The entire European system has been turned on its head with heavy rightwing gains in this week's election but Israel is the Nazi problem. Yeah right!
18  |  Jack Mandler, London, Monday Jun 08, 2009
Suzanne, Tel Aviv, you seem to be disquieted by truth. THis is why you are trying to susppress views that castigate Israeli crimes. Well, my dear, you have much to worry about. The Internet has exposed Israel. We are no longer dependent on the Jewish controlled media for news and views on the ME. Israel's pornographic crimes against the helpless Pals. are being exposed. And no amount of lying and hasbara and spin will help you.
19  |  American citizen, Bloomington, Indiana, Monday Jun 08, 2009
Eric, you are mindlessly parroting Kurrathammer, the Kahanist writer. The entire West Bank is less than 3000 square miles...so where is that great expanse of land. Don't you people know the difference between truth and mendacity? Shame on you
20  |  American living in Israel, Monday Jun 08, 2009
Eric, New York, non-Jews in Israel are treated very much as a third-class citizens. ANd now laws are being drafted to force them to take loyalty oaths in order to be entitled to citizenship. And in the occupied territories, which Jews call Shtachem, two justice systems are adopted, one for Jewish settlers and one for non-Jews. IT is exactly like Nazi Germany. I wanna ask you how can Israel be dedicated to justice when it murders Pal kids, destroy Pal homes, steal pal land, bulldoze pal farms...and deny pal free access ..Do you know there 769 roadblocks in W.Bank....it is hell. really
21  |  Christian missionary, Nazareth, northern Israel, Monday Jun 08, 2009
Chanya, Israel, in the name of Jewish survival you are trying to destroy nations and exterminate an entire people. In the name of Israel's surival, you have committed a virtual genocide in Gaza. Even the Nazis didn't excell in lies as you do. I am for Israel's surival, but I am not for the extermination of the Paelstinian people. You have just committed a virtual holocaust in Gaza? So what is next? Will you gass them with your nuclear bombs?
22  |  Aaron Vienna, Monday Jun 08, 2009
What is depressing about the stereotyped arguments about the settlements is the lack of any reference to their history. Why are the settlements there? How are the settlements viewed by Israelis and Israeli leaders? Are the settlements necessary for the security of Israel under the present circumstances? What would it take to change those circumstances? I also view these settlements as obstacles to peace and sources of discrimination and hardship for Palestinians. But we have to deal with the above questions if we are serious about addressing the problem, not just bash Israel.
23  |  Yaccov Abramovic, Austria, followr of true Torah Judaism., Monday Jun 08, 2009
Jenny, don't be stupid and ignorant.God will not bless satanic people. God will not bless murderers, child killers, adulterers, homosexuals, thieves and liars. Israel excels in all these characters. And ingoramus people like you who don't know God keep babbling about ...God bless Israel. God only blesses righteous people, not murderous secular states that behaves like Adolph Hitler while claiming loyalthy to Moses. May the evil ones perish.
24  |  Tzvi Nokam/amerikkka, Monday Jun 08, 2009
why do you believe what pew says? Who owns and funds and runs pew?
25  |  Peter Neff, cyprus, Monday Jun 08, 2009
Aaron Vienna, the settlements were established in order to preclude the possiblity of peace. Israel has killed the possiblity of a two-state solution. Israel doesn't want peace with the Palestinians. Israel doesn't want the Palestinians.
26  |  Sherlock Holmes, London, Monday Jun 08, 2009
'Cuprus to Iran'? Israel gave Sinai back to Egypt and tried to rteturn Gaza to Egypt, but Egypt rejected the offer. King Hussein of Jordan renounced his claims to the West Bank, ceding it to Israel. If you look at maps of the League of Nation Mandate for Palestine you willnote that B ritain gave 77% of mandatory Palestine to create what is now called the Kingdom of Jordan, leaving 23% for the renewed Jewish homeland, including the West Bank and Gaza. The Bible says the borders of the Holy Land will be from the Mediterranean to the Euphrates. Where does Cyprus or Iran come in to this?
27  |  Ted, New York, Monday Jun 08, 2009
Sherlock HOmes, Yisrael Shahak in his book "Jewish religion, Jewish history" quortes some Talmudic sages as saying that the biblical land of Israel extends from cyprus to IRan.
28  |  George, Houston, Monday Jun 08, 2009
Shahak? His works have found a receptive audience among neo-Nazis, antisemites and Holocaust deniers.
29  |  David - Cleveland, Monday Jun 08, 2009
Mr. Dressler and Mr. London are correct - those who spout hate and ignore facts are lunatics and potentially dangerous to their fellow human beings. Regarding the Pew findings which the lunatics choose to ignore while they vent, I'm curious regarding the study's methods, etc. The only way to know whether the findings are reliable is to look at the study's methods critically. For example, how many "unaffiliated" are definitionally Jewish? If it's many, the study's "revised" numbers might be similar to other surveys.

#23 Be careful what you wish for evil one.
31  |  Sherlock Holmes, London, Monday Jun 08, 2009
Reply to #27. The Bible itself clearly describes the borders of the Land of Israel, 'from the wilderness and this Lebanon, even unto the great river, the River Euphrates... and unto the Great Sea [Mediterranean] toward the going down of the sun...' Joshua I. 4. The Bible never mention either Cyprus or Persia / Iran as boundaries of Israel. Can you give a chapter and verse support for your suggestion?
32  |  Joseph London, Monday Jun 08, 2009
#20 Loyalty oath. I grew up in the USA and in school we took a loyalty oath or pledge of allegiance every morning. Why is a loyalty oath a problem? I now live in the UK where members of Parliament take a loyalty oath to the Queen. Many countries have loyalty oaths, so why should Israel be targetted for doing the same?
33  |  Chanya, Israel, Monday Jun 08, 2009
to 21-Mr. Christian missionary-excuse me, but Israel is not exterminating anyone. Perhaps you missed it when in 1937 the Arabs rejected a Palestinian state. And you missed 1947 when they declared war on Israel instead of a Palestinain state.  And you missed 1967 when Israel offered to negotiate about the territories and the Arab world said no. Or in 2000 when Arafat launched an Intifada in response to Barak's offer of a state. Or 2009 when Abbas rejected Olmert's offer. Perhaps you missed that the world has pumped billions into Palestine-and they have built NOTHING-only produced terrorists.

Great, they will make a lot of little atheist leftists and will call their children Obama and will be pleased when he destroys Israel. Thank you US crazy "Jews" you voted WITH our enemies.

Great, they will make a lot of little atheist leftists and will call their children Obama and will be pleased when he destroys Israel. Thank you US crazy "Jews" you voted WITH our enemies. And by the way all those self hating Jews writing comments here are pathetic, they should go to a psychiatrist, they bought the propaganda their countries sold them.I am happy those don't live in Israel, we need strong people not self hating leftists, or so called religious but who hate Israel and refuse to live there because it is not perfect right...Why Austria is perfect ?

Well... I'm glad that Jewish people continue to marry other Jew's. The only problem with that is I wouldn't mind having a nice Jewish husband myself. Which by the way... my step-father is Jewish married to my mom who is an Evanglelical Christian. We sure do love him. The posters on this board sure are nut up. I swear, there is no hatred like anti-Semitic hatred, eh? I know, because I defend Israel and her right to existence in her covented homeland, I come across it all the time. Kind of scary. You know the hatred is of a spiritual nature? Yep... their satanic haters of G's children, liars 2.

Dear Shmuel rosner - I will be brief. I know not the Post, but you are moderating this blog. Why on earth I am asking you as one sane poster to the even "saner", jokes aside, a great and wonderful political commentator on your own right, censor frankly obscene and mad comments from patently and transparently the SAME person over and over again, creating bad blood here. I'm 100 % sure you know there is one (1; o-n-e) single individual behind the names and locations from "Bloomington, Indiana, to London, UK". Why Rosner? For what purpose??? Please act! G.F. freelance foreign-affaires journo

Obviously I wanted to ask: why...do NOT censor. Sorry for th4e misunderstanding, but think my message was perfectly resosant. Please banish the lunatic idiot from this site. your readers - those who don't detect it - take him/her seriously. Totally unnecessarely. and I pity these people, who even take the "pen" to respond.

#21. Martha loved the Lord, but spent little time at our Master's feet. Lk 10:39-42 And she had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet and listened to his teaching. But Martha was distracted with much serving; and she went to him and said, "Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me."But the Lord answered her, "Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things; one thing is needful. Mary has chosen the good portion, which shall not be taken away from her." Hyperbole indicates wearyness, be with Him... go read the Book.

Jews are always the center of gossips. What's happening in China? What's happening in Tibet? In Africa? Do you know that Iran got into what it is nowadays due to American support of a corrupt Shah? I do not think that jews should kill children? But who killed "thousands of children"? Why do you like so much to talk about jews? Couldn't you divide your attention among other political facts occurring simultaneously? Couldn't you study more Jewish and Zionism history? And why did America refuse the Jewish refugees from the III Reich? Was that moral? Do you think Jews should be swept into the sea?
41  |  Moises Bassan, Panama, Tuesday Jun 09, 2009
To JPOST Staff: It's clear that there is somebody posting under different ("Jewish-sounding") names in order to vandalize this forum (nobody called "Avi Kadduri" would ever say something so rediculous). In any case, as a programmer, who enjoys very much reading these articles, I offer you my services to stop this simple problem, for free: moises@tecnorganica.com.
42  |  Observer, Tuesday Jun 09, 2009
Moises Bassan, why are you so worried, so insecure? Jews, too, use pseudo names, Is it ok for Jews, but not for non-Jews?

Moises Bassan, why are you so worried, so insecure? Jews, too, use pseudo names, Is it ok for Jews, but not for non-Jews?
44  |  Mireille, Tuesday Jun 09, 2009
Moises Bassan: I totally agree with you. There must be guidelines regulating this forum: 1- no criticis of Israel should be allowed to post messages. 2- only peole supporting Settler hilltop thugs are allowed. 3- Only kosher-licensed goyem are allowed. 4-every non-Jewish poster must present his ID no and all other pertinent data. 5-The site must be declared totally kosher 6-all non-conformist posters must be reported to the Mossad for possible assassination. And, 7, all critics of Israel on this forum must be declared "despicable anti-semites" who must be made to pay for their follies.
45  |  Danny London, Tuesday Jun 09, 2009
As a matter of policy, posters who have nothing to say about the subject of the article should not be printed. What has 'Cast Lead' to do with intermarriage among American Jews? I also noted that a group of hostile posts were surprisingly similar in style and content -- and had absolutely nothing to do with the subject being discussed.
46  |  Mike Feldman, Canada, Tuesday Jun 09, 2009
Mireille. You dropped the Paris after your name. I found you anyway. .#41's concern was that someone critical of Jews created a Jewish name. That is a fraud and cheating. As someone that rants off unsuportable facts on this post every day, you know the items in you #44 are ridiculous, but are actually an improvement from some of your earlier work. In case you and the Observer forgot, the topic was about the percentage of Jews marrying Jews. Therefore the moderator would be justified in only posting blogs which were about the subject. I think you should apologize to the moderator.

Sally - U.S.A.: Daran, I'm not trying to double team against you with Mike, but I do want to bring up couple of points with you & this seems like a good time. Many times you ask people questions or their opinion & most of the time, they answer you. But when the shoe is on the other foot, you don't. Second, you misstate facts & will not admit to it. Everyone makes fact misstakes; I know I have. But you insist on agruing facts when there is nothing to argue. In my opinion, it doesn't show cleverness; it just shows an inability to engage in discussion. If you are a friend of Israel, shouldn't that be your concern
