Rosner's Domain: Obama and Israel: Jewish Democrats seem unalarmed

Eric Fingerhut does a fine job - and he did it fast enough as to make my effort unnecessary - as he shows why the recent poll of Jewish Democrats (sponsored by the Traditional Values Coalition) is problematic in more than one way (it is still interesting, though).

However, one paragraph in Eric's analysis I don't understand:

But the question that shows the most disageement with Obama is purely hypothetical -- "If President Obama told Israel not to attack Iran but offered no real assurance that he could stop Iran from developing nuclear weapons, would you support or oppose Obama's decision?" Just 26 percent backed Obama's decision in that scenario, while 40 percent opposed it and 34 percent were "not sure."

What's "hypothetical" about it? Obama did tell Israel that he doesn't want it to attack, and did not offer "real assurance" that he could stop Iran (he can't possibly offer such assurances).

Bottom line: the poll is somewhat problematic (methodically speaking), and should be pretty calming for Obama. Most Jewish Democrats (58%) think the President is doing a good job "promoting peace in the Middle East". And most didn't by into the hype of "Obama's pressuring Israel" (55% don't think he does, only 18% say he does). Press releases and political spins aside - American Jews might worry a little about some very specific items of Obama's policies, but generally speaking are supportive and unalarmed.

"American Jews might worry a little about some very specific items of Obama's policies, but generally speaking are supportive and unalarmed." Correction: American Jewish Democrats are generally speaking supportive and unalarmed. There are some few of us who are Republicans. And our number may grow as the scales fall from the eyes of some of the Jewish Democrats, allowing them to admit to themselves that Obama's policies are in fact not at all helpful to Israel.

Better. Thanks.
3  |  Mike Feldman, Canada, Thursday Aug 13, 2009
I think there is a general numbness to what Obama says. He talks about "done deals" every day, but hey are just annoncements-no deals. His ineffectiveness ultimately is not a danger to Israel, it isn't helpful either. I think if a question could be asked "Do you care what Obama thinks?", the No's would register very high.

Naturally, how dare the president actually expect for Israel to abide by agreements that they have already signed. Just one more reason why the US should just walk away from Israel and take our weapons and money with us. Because you people never have any intention of abiding by any agreements you have signed. You have no honor.
5  |  Mike Feldman, Canada, Friday Aug 14, 2009
Tom. I know its a lot to ask, but did you read the subject of this blog? Also please quote the agreements that the Arab states have honored.

At the end of the day obama has no jurisdiction over the sovereign state of Israel. They should look to their own country and the unrest that's happening there.Hilary clinton allotted 200billion dollars to the fatah palistinians and we all KNOW what that money will be spent on and it aint the "poor pallis".It's about time these people went back to jordan and egypt [where they belong] and stopped putting out the begging bowl.Israel built kabutzes and made the desert to bloom like a rose with their bare hands while the pallis live in piggeries and are terrified of their crazy leaders.

TOM DOPEY-MORON Esquire...your genes and DNA are showing...YOU a proven "Dishonourble" freak has the temerity to utter the word "Honor"...clearly your background and your association with and championing of murderers in the Muslim World has "Personified " YOU as "Dishonorable"....yep... dishonorable...
8  |  Chanya, Israel, Friday Aug 14, 2009
Tom - sure the U.S. could take its money and weapons - but then would you be willing to forgo all of the technological upgrades Israel makes on those weapons and gives back to the U.S.? Or perhaps Israel won't use the money it gets to buy weapons from American companies as the U.S. requires it to (did you even know that)? And while we're at it, maybe you should stop using your Israeli invented cell phone, your computer with the Israeli invented Intel chip - and that list could go on and on, leaving you in the technological dark ages.

Obama doesn't care about Israel but so what ?God cares, and all nations will fall that try to come against this beaautiful land He gave to the jews.God with Israel is a massive majority whether the whole world comes against it.Look what's happening in america as obama's policies start to crumble one by one.Look what's happening to the fatah regime.as their now turning on each other>Once a country tries to negotiate jerusalem away from the Jews something ALWAYS happens to that nation.YOUR nation is always going to be yours with a plus when messiah comes.
10  |  Terry - Eilat, Israel, Friday Aug 14, 2009
All that the poll proves is that American Jews, like Americans generally, are falling for the Obama BS, helped along by a fawning, obediant, & left-biased media (like the NYT, Washington Post, LA Times, CNN) as well as in-the-tank Jewish Democratic ''misleaders'' like Dershowitz & your friend, Mr Harris. Nonetheless, Obama's popularity & job approval keeps sinking, week after week, as people start to realize what a dud they voted for. In addition, even the Obama team is backing away from open criticism of Israel, realizing that it was completely counter-productive.

I doubt this poll. Most I speak with are highly alarmed, scared and regret ever voting for him.

#3 Mike Feldman, Canada. Looks like we won't be able to chat - Rosner can't seem to post any comments in a timely fashion. I don't have the patience for this. Check out The Economist today, they have an article on the Fatah conference that is nearly as stupid & inaccurate as the NYT. And comments are posted automatically. There is also a good article on DebkaFile which ties into the subject of this Rosner post - how Syria screwed Obama & now Obama's entire Middle-East policy is down the toilet (where it belongs). Shabbat Shalom.
16  |  Steven J, Friday Aug 14, 2009
This is no surprise. American Jews overwhelmingly support a two state solution and stoping of settlements. No matter how angry your comments in jpost might be it dosen't affect a thing.
17  |  Steven J, Friday Aug 14, 2009
To andy-london, why make stuff up. You may disagee with the two-state solution but why the hell did u get '200 billion' up. There is a difference between million and billion. Go to AIPAC and other lobby group's webpage and see how much billions of tax dollar we send. Plus vetoing in UN and don't forget the millitary equipment. I know Israel is always whinning and ungreatful. Obama should just cut off all support and we will then see where the hot headed arrogance all goes. No american soildier, no american weapons, no more aid...and then Israel can say it is trully independent.

Israel must Internationalize E. & W. & N. & S. JERUSALEM then you can build, Payed by a special "TOURIST TAX", something elevated above Israel via a joint "International-Peace-Bridge Rail&tunnel Authority; Similar w/3-lanes; 2 way for Trucks&car & 1 lane for Trains from landlocked West-Bank To E. JERU Then to Oceanside GAZA! Else if Hamstani's & Fatahstani's do-not agree to Internationalizing/JERUSALEM A.S.A.P Then Justly Flaten Gaza ASAP or divide & turn it to aParking Lot (never re-settle it Until 120+ Years) By Then JORDN & LEBN? will be 75% CANAANITEs with the Same 'Low-Lifes from Low-Lands".

I never understood why American Jews would support Obama. I know they typically vote "democrat" in an election. However, there were so many red flags that came up even before the election took place. A video tape of Obama at a Hamas "going away dinner" for one of his dear friends who used to be a high operative with Hamas. The L.A. Times wouldn't release that tape before the election. Why???? We don't know. Obama speaks out of two sides of his mouth when it comes to Israel. Why American Jews don't see this, I'll never know. This GOY does.

Hillary Clinton is ANGRY. She's been banned from Israel. Wonder why????

Terry: FYI columnist and radio talk show host Mark Levin calls NY Times " NYSlimes" and The Washington Post " The Washington Compost". The man can verbalize what many inately feel.
23  |  moron galut, Friday Aug 14, 2009
american jewish opinion is characteristic of 'galutim' and assimilationists--most were silent during the shoah[fearing for their own security] and most were not zionist until idf started winning wars--losing wars demoralizes jews as well as israelis and must not happen again...also jewish cemocrats have a religion called liberalism[socialism in progressive disguise].why so many fail to appreciate conservative values--law,property,family,defense,personal responsibility and enlightebed self-interest--is problematic as these are far more consistent with jewish values than liberalism
24  |  Jordan Ariel, Friday Aug 14, 2009
Tom - You stated that Israel isn't abiding by its agreements? The US certaintly isnt abiding by agreements with past administrations. Yet, Netanyahu's govt. is expected to abide by the roadmap, which was also negotiated by a previous admin. Kinda funny that way. The Arabs make more and more demands of Israel, before they even return to the negotiating table. Again, whatever the US gives Israel in aid amounts to 1% of Israel's GDP, and again, the $ needs to be spent on US products. The funds are part of the treaty made with Egypt. The US gives Israel funds, as well as Egypt.

#22 Jonah. I love it , I have a real thing about the NYT, ''NY Slimes'' is exactly what I think, what a bunch of liars. I stopped reading (or watching) any mainstream media quite some time ago. The JPost is the last, only because of a few columnists like Caroline Glick & Sarah Honig. But, I can't say I'm happy about most of what I find here, mostly because of what they omit rather than what they actually report on. I've been following your posts - you make a lot of excellent points. Good for you for not swallowing the BS in the mainstream media.
27  |  Mike Feldman, Canada, Friday Aug 14, 2009
Terry. Thanks will read and you'll see my observations after Shabbat. (If Rosner can get them posted.) John Galt #13 Are you reluctant to call Tom a prick or an asshole. Just curous to know.

Jewish Democrats are certainly lame and may be hopeless. Obama's poll numbers among all groups are sinking stone-like. Health care reform and the massive spending on ineffective economic policies are the two main reasons, however, Obama's foreign policy has not achieved anything, either. It seems that the only groups that still strongly support Obama are Blacks and Jews. Blacks' views I can understand. That leaves Jewish Democrats as the delusional outliers who advocate more vociferously for Darfur than they do for Israel.

Of course these jokers are 'unalarmed'. Had they been alarmed they would not have voted for this arrogant radical in the first place. I am sorry to say this, but the continuous Leftisation of American Jewry has left it ignorant about Israel and disinterested in its fate.

Once again, leftwing Rosner calls upon a Jewish liberal source to reinforce his slant. And once again I have to ask why this leftiy lightweight's "domain" is featured on the home page rather than buried with the rest in Blog Central?

Jonah,I also listen to Mark Levin. He also calls Nancy Pelosi, "Stretch Pelosi" (because of the plastic surgery), "Schmuck Schumer" and a variety of other stuff......Michael Savage is another great one (actually his name is Michael Wiener). Mainstream media has a horse in the health care race. They have completely thrown in with Obama. If Bush tried some of the things they are doing (compiling an email list???) it would have been bloody murder! Lived in Jamaica 10 years, miss it terribly, love your country. Keep in touch, Gardis - CT, USA

Why is there a question of whether American Jews support Israel`s Zionist goals & actions ? If they are US patriots then the Zionist treatment of the indigenous population of Pal`n (ethnic cleansing ,persecution, apartheid, murder) should be condemned as the rest of the rational, informed world does. Perhaps there is an emerging awareness that AIPAC policies are bad for the USA. eg. The AIPAC-Bush appointees Wolfowitz,Feith,Perle ,Edelman ,Wurmser ,Libby,et al without whom there would have been no invasion of Iraq. If so, good on these people that are backing away from the Zionist beast.

"And I will send them strong delusion, that they will believe a lie." GOD. HE has and they Have! What are you surprised about? It's been going on for a long time, well before Obama, but the day is coming soon, when it will end. The only question is, how severe will the consequences be in the mean time.

I wish the Jewish people the very best,i feel pain in my heart when a people murder other people because they don't think alike nor worship the same.Jesus and God they don't say to kill someone if they don't want to believe,i think it's said to walk on by then and don't waste valuble time on them.he did'nt say murder them .did he ?i as a american can't imagine what it would be like to be worried to go to a public place because some fool may strap a bomb on themself's and kill women children and men,FOR WHAT !? it hurts me.if i owned a country i would give it to you guysbut that land is yours

To # 8 Chanya Please remember there are US technologies in Israeli systems than other way around. When you talk about Intel chips, don't forget Intel US co. and can move its R&D facility in Israel back to the US or Ireland for that matter without much difficulties. Israel should be thankful for its friendship with the US and not thumb its nose at it.
44  |  Mike Feldman, Canada, Saturday Aug 15, 2009
#15 Terry. I read the Economist article you recommended. Is being a multiple murderer a pre-requisite for running for higher office in Fatah?
45  |  cares1996, Saturday Aug 15, 2009
Do ya need the Mediterrean to dump on your head,it is strongly suggested that you trust Mr. Netanyahu, polls are only credible if personally conducted, not brain surgery people. What would you like MR. OBAMA say that would change anything really, like it or not were facing Jihadist.I would encourage you to accept it,its been going on for years and nobody wants to pull the trigger until the very last moment. This can drive ya nuts if not put into proper perspective. We must have faith in our lord and seek the comfort he will provide.Focus on what we have not what we don`t.
46  |  flower, USA, Saturday Aug 15, 2009
when are we going to finally hear the simple truth that Iran is not Israel's problem but the Arab world's problem ? When are we going to hear that Iran is an American problem since so many Americans are in the area either as soldiers or business people? When is Obama going to grow up and stop acting like an irresponsible child?
47  |  Mike Feldman, Canada, Saturday Aug 15, 2009
flower. Iran is the Arab world'd problem and Iran is America's problem. But don't think it is not Israel's problem. If Iran dropped a nuke on Israel, please don't think the Arab world would go into a deep depression. The question I can't help with is the last one about Obama. By the time he grows up it won't matter, he won't be President any more.
48  |  Terry - Eilat, Israel, Saturday Aug 15, 2009
#44 Mike Feldman. How did you like that propaganda piece in The Economist? What garbage, to think this was once the best periodical in English, went down the tubes. My answer to your question: Make a list of Arab heroes, famous (actually, infamous) political personalities, & you have your answer. You can tell an awful lot about a culture by who it admires, who are it's heroes. Arabs go for tyrants, psychopaths, & mass murderers. Our heroes are scholars, inventors, scientists, & great doctors.

I don't know where this poll was taken but it simply is not realistic. American Jewish Democrats are indeed concerned and apprehensive about their president. They feel he is naive and inexperienced about the politics and players as well as of the history in the Middle East. His advisor on terrorism seems to feel hezbollah has left terrorism behind as it has succeeded in invaded the political system of Lebanon. We feel there has been undue pressure placed upon Israel without understanding the need for a willingness to compromise by the Palestinians. He has made a mess with his policies.
51  |  Andrew Jay, NY, Sunday Aug 16, 2009
I think Jewish Dems are just too scared to throw the man who they funded away, as they do with all Democratic nominees. Jewish Dems didn't really believe that Obama was gonna pander to the Arabs. Also, its early, so some of them are hoping for the turnaround. But its hopeful, as we see that the number of Not Sure is very high on many questions.
52  |  susan, U.S.A., Sunday Aug 16, 2009
M.E.S. and Ronald, U.S.A, I appreciate your comments and agree. It's just unfathonomable to me that American Jews are so happy to have elected an African American that they can't look behind the veneer . Yes, Jews have been known to be often democrats, but we are also known to be analytical, intelligent, and educated people. The shroud that has covered American Jews is disheartening and, I hope, we can look beyond the forest to see the trees. I hope we can do this before the trees are trampled in front of our eyes. We should have learned by now..Hey, but we're assimilated, though, aren't we???

Most US Jews are embarassed by the racist zionist entity. I hope obama helps supply Iran with nuclear technology and teams up with Iran against the zionists. Most US Jews wont oppose this because they are tired ofthis albatross
