No surprise in the survey. At least the youngsters who made the trip to Israel had enough interest to make the trip. I was raised in a traditional N/E American Jewish family. My father took me to shuel because his father took him to shuel. Our High Holidays attendance was preceeded by a watch synchronization of what time we would arrive, and what time we would we be leaving. We observed the holidays with family dinners, but I do not recall Israel ever being mentioned. Birthright, however, creates an affinity that simply doesn't exist in Jewish families born and raised in the West. Many young Jews measure marrying outside the faith only in terms of their family's reaction. And more and more that is a non-issue.
