Comments: 89      Responding to my post on Jewish having spouses from other religions (PEW survey: almost 70% of American Jews marry other Jews) Andrew Silow-Carroll, Editor of the New Jersey Jewish News, sent me this very sensible letter. I think he's probably right: I'm no Steven Cohen, but I think your headline, "almost 70% of American Jews marry other Jews" is less surprising than it seems. According to the NJPS, "the intermarriage rate for Jews who married before 1970 stands at 13%, rises to 28% for those whose marriages started in the 1970s, and then increases again to 38% for Jews married in the first half of the 1980s...; Among Jews whose marriages started in 1985-90, the intermarriage rate is 43%. The intermarriage rate is also 43% for Jews whose marriages began in 1991-95. Jews who have married since 1996 have an intermarriage rate of 47%." The Pew is a cross-generational sample as far as I can tell. So when you factor in the late middle aged and elderly Jews married to Jews, along with the somewhat younger couples with slightly higher intermarriage rates, is it possible that the total percentage of Jews married to Jews is 70? Or (and here my limited math skills may be exposed), let's say 100 Jews get married. If 50 percent of the weddings are Jewish-Jewish, meaning 50 people in our sample find 50 Jewish partners, you get a total of 100 Jews. If the other 50 percent of the weddings are Jewish/non-Jewish, thats still a total of only 50 Jewish partners. So in a sample of 150 Jewish marriages, 100 out of 150, or 66 percent, of American Jews marry other Jews. And that's just for those intermarrying at a rate of 50 percent. Am I missing something? No he doesn't. Here's the relevant paragraph from the 2001 NJPS: Among all married Jews today -- including those recently married and those married long ago whose marriages are still intact -- 31% are intermarried. Age, gender, region, secular and Jewish education, the Jewishness of parents and Jewish upbringing are all related to intermarriage. So why do I think the PEW survey is interesting? because it compares the habits of Jews with those of people of other religious groups. And talking about marriage, here's another nugget I've just found, written by The Atlantic's Ta-Nehisi Coates: 19 percent of blacks "oppose" or "strongly oppose" a relative marrying someone Jewish, while 31 percent favor or "favor" or "strongly favor" the unions. The remaining 50 percent of blacks don't care. 38 percent of Jews either "oppose" or "strongly oppose" one of their relatives marrying someone black. 22 percent "favor" or "strongly favor" the unions. 23 percent of Jews don't care. American Jews are typically very racist...especially Ashkenazim. I am a Jew, and I'm also black. I'm sure if you asked the 38% who oppose or strongly oppose marrying blacks the same question, but addsomeon like me (a Jew that happens to be black), they would still oppose the idea. I currently live in Israel, and for the most part peeople here don't care so much...as long as we are all Jewish. But I personally know, Ashkenazim who would refuse to marry even Yemenites because the "are too dark". Put shortly and honestly, Jews in America are EXTREMELY RACIST! Thats why I left

a sociology professor said in a recent class that blacks and asians do not intermarry at all or relatively little; while Jews were intermarrying at the 50% level. So that may explain some of the numbers in your study. Jews as a group were willing to intermarry and not as insular as blacks and asians.

My son can marry a woman who is black, white, asian, hispanic, etc., as long as she is Jewish and practicing. What we should factor in is the number of Jews who are not practicing (dead end) and Jews from mixed marriages (dead end) and the percentage of reform Jews whose children will end up in the above two categories. They may be good, decent people, but contribute to Jewish crisis.
Again, I would welcome my son to marry any woman of any color or background, as long as they loved each other and had a strong Jewish practicing faith. Our religion depends on, and we as a people depend on it.

Michael, I'm very sorry you had a terrible experience. Human beings are of one race (human race). We have people of all colors in our Synagogue. I was VERY excited with the first woman rabbi of color (don't flame me b/c female) in Cincinnati. There are adopted children of color in our Synagogue (of course we all have color). Please recall two Jewish civil rights workers who were killed with one black civil rights worker in the 60s. My father financially supported Dr. King. It's a sin to find racism in ALL religions. But you find good as well. I wish you much happiness.

Besides being a Jew, I'm also a Native American. Mixed unions do work. Although most of us take partners outside our faith,they tend to be very stable and loving relationships as evidenced by the mixing with others we Jews have done for ages. First, he reminded them that Moses was His servant and that because of that they should reverance enough for Him not to speak against Moses. Then, G-d made the punishment fit the crime. Miriam's skin was turned "white" with leprosy. Miriam got a first-hand taste of what it is like to be stigmatized. She had to stay outside of the camp for 7 days until she was healed. "Surveys" about race and some of the resulting comments are distressing. Race is a social construct that serves to define, categorize, enslave and exterminate. Why, as Jews, do we feel the need to categorize people within our religion as black, white, asian, etc. This is not evidenced within other religions. During these times of additional stressors for Judaism and Jewish people, we should be uniting not dividing ourselves. When we ask Jews of colour "how did they become Jewish" and other offensive questions, we only serve to alienate.

Additionally regarding "a solid body of empirical and testing evidence", it should be clear to most intelligent people that "evidence" can always be manipulated to suit the goals of the researcher and the targeted audience. Clearly this has been the case in Jewish history as "evidence" was used to almost exterminate our entire European population.

There is nothing so clear cut and unbiased as the history of Intelligence Testing. A common excuse often heard among the PC apologists is that testing is 'culturally biased.' Then why do first-generation immigrant children, asian and caucasian still score higher than blacks. It is distressing and hypocritical that such an obvious and proven fact cannot be openly discussed in today's Politically Correct arena. It is very, very foolish and stupid to believe that the very obvious disparity between the races in Intelligence does not exist.

All those studies about IQ differences amount to the following. There are differences amongst people grouped acording to their ethnic background for reasons thet are absolutely not known nor proven or even seriously considered by the scientific community. What is absolutely certain is that those scoring lower or higher are not homogeneous amongst themselves genetically nor are they genetically different in an statistical meaningfull way so that their genetic makeup can explain by itself the enormous difference in IQ scores for example Ashkenazi jews one standard deviation higher than whites

Back to the original question of arithmetic, I find it interesting that the poll talks about people still married. My first marriage was to a Christian, and although that wasn't the main reason for its end, I am not going to repeat that experience again. If I marry again, my wife will be Jewish. Same goes for my current romantic interest: her ex-husband is Christian, but she wants her next husband to be Jewish. How does that fit into the poll?

Joel- we can look at empirical data all day long. It does not take into account recent cultural influences in the history of various people. It is hard for one group to receive high IQ scores when taking tests that are culturally biased to another group. Besides when we cut through your rationale we are still left with the fact that you feel that its a good deal for a Black person to marry a Jew, but a bad deal for the Jew. This type of statement goes beyond the pale of political correctness, its nasty and should be viewed as shameful. Besides I've met lots of smart Blacks and dumb Jews.

This is very interesting because I know that Jewish heritage is carried thru the mother, so technically even if a jewish man marries a non jew then none of their children would be jewish. But a jewish woman can marry a non jew and still have jewish children no matter the race of the spouse. There have been a lot of dating between blacks and jews. There's this guy Arnon Cahen, at my school who's Israeli and he's dating a mixed race african girl from Trinidad and Tobago. They seem happy and no matter what, I think he really loves her. So does race/religion matter? I don't think so!

I'm a Native American, Scotch-Irish, Sephardic Jewish man. I love my ethnic heritages. I'm proud of who I am. I love Ashkenazic Judaism and Yiddish culture as well, however I wish that Ashkenazi took pride in their culture as just that: culture, not religion. On the other hand, there are those who wish to apologize for being culturally Ashkenazi like there is something wrong with that. There needs to be balance. Why must Jews be put under one ethnic authority or another? I think that the Ethiopian Jews had one of the purest forms of Judaism (minus a few holy days), but nobody okayed it.

Race in America is primarily a social construct - most American blacks having considerable white ancestry. Race is a very nebulous concept & you can easily imagine where it blurs into meaninglessness. If a man (or woman) has a Chinese grandfather & a Norwegian grandmother on one side & a Nigerian grandfather & an Indonesian grandmother on the other side, what race is he?
Culture is far more important & while I don't think inter-marriage with non-Jews is particularly desirable, if the children are raised in a Jewish home, receive a Jewish education, what's the problem?

If there was one Jewish parent, mother or father, who married a non-jewish spouse and non-jewish spouses ensued for one hundred generations, would they all be considered Jewish by blood and/or faith? Can anybody name one civilization that came out of Sub-Saharan Black Africa that is on the same level as the Chinese. Indian,Persian, Greek or Roman civilizations? Of course not! Let us clarify: Judaism is a religion not a race. Race does not exist, as biologically we are all the same. (thus we can reproduce together) To be Jewish one must have a Jewish Mother or convert. To be 'black' it is just like having green eyes, it depends on who a parent a grandparent or greatgrandparent who has that genetic trait and that is all. People marry another Jew to carry on a Jewish life. I don't care what the person my child marries looks like as long as they are indeed Jewish, kind and nice too. Any 'kind' of Jewish will do!

A young Jewish student at the University of Southern Illinoise meets a young female student from Cyprus. They were classmates. He is a Conservative Jew..she is an Orthodox christian. They meet, they date, they make love...and then get married and are happy. So, why should the woman be forced to believe in Shulhan Aruch or the man in the crucifixion of Jesus and the salvation doctrine.
Let them live their lives....keep their beliefs. why not universal brotherhood, instead of parochial confessionalism?

Ofcourse if you compare results for black kids living in Compton to the white counterparts in Orange county, then there will be a stark difference. But, if you compare the results for these same whites, to those of CARIBBEAN black then I guarantee you that the whites will look like non-responsive, drooling, vegetables. To Phil: "Every organism evolves according to its environment." So where did homosexuality evolve from? There are too many flaws in Darwin's theory to be believed without question in an age of scientific enlightenment. Many great scientists (Kepler, Newton, Joule, Pastuer) believed in Genesis.
As for Joel's comment, the variable in intelligence scores is not the race of the child but whether there is a stable, two parent family. Most black children don't have a two parent family, so that discrepancy is not surprising. Adopted black children are just as successful as other races.

Tal, Los Angeles, I agree with you. Here in Hebron I know two brothers, one is named "Yacov Ben David" (his original name is Mahmoud Ja'abari), and the other is Ahmed. They have the same mother, same father, same family; but one is Jewish and the other is Muslim.
This shows that being Jewish has more to do with religion than with race. There is no Jewish race...

#45. I dunno, but I always thought that Michael Jordan, Kobi Bryant, Tiger Woods, Muhammed Ali. and Henry Aaron were pretty smart dudes. Given their physical superiority they must be part of some master race. Maybe their only pretending to be black guys.
Everytime I turn on a heavyweight boxing match one of those Klitsko brothers is beating the crap out of some black guy. At least one of the Klitskos has a PHD. How'd that happen. Maybe the Klitskos are just pretendling to be white guys. Its all too confusing.!

Joel, I do not want to get into your B.S. But I would remark that your post give poeple like me food for thought. As christian, ardent supporter of the State of Israel and the Jewish people (btw, there is no such thing as the Jewish race), the racism directed at "blacks" by Jews sadens me. Many a time I am left to wonder: are Jews really racist as their detractors claim? I think not. But, I feel like I am burying my head in the sand ('cos I am not as intellingent as you?). An Arab is one who speaks Arabic. There is no such thing as an Arab race.

Sonya, the Islamic culture and civilization is derived from the arab tribes of Arabia. A people who in Mohammed's time were pure arabs as can be seen today throughout saudia Arabia. They were, and are, members of the caucasian branch of the Human beings. You are referring to post-Islamic culture which today encompasses many races and cultures. But it was the pure arabs like Mohammed who created and spread Islam.

Discrimination does not have exceptions; it is so sad to see how religious diversity is suppressed in this sea of comments. Discrimination on the basis of color is deemed wrong, but looking down on those who chose to marry outside of Judaism is the norm. A homogeneous race will not bolster the Jewish people of the world. It is terrifying to think how short collective memory is.

I'm a 24 year old Jew from Maryland, and I hope in 50 years, Americans are known for being a mixed color. We live in a global world where anybody can live anywhere, and call it home. I hope the people that hold firm onto their cultural beliefs will become more open about letting others join, marry their sons & daughters, and live happily. We only live once...depending on the religion.

I think it is safe to assume that children of a Jew/Non-Jew marriage are highly unlikely to be concerned about marrying a Jew and their children will not be considered Jewish. Take a test sample of 100 marriages. With an intermarriage rate of 50%, only 50 of these marriages will be Jew/Jew with Jewish children. Lets assume the other 50 have children who dont marry Jews (even if they do, their children cant be Jewish). Of the 50 who married jews, only 50% of their kids will marry Jews. i.e. 25% of the first 100 marriages. Next generation will make it 12.5%. By 5th generation - no more Jews

Irving, you are only partially right. Many of Muhammed's companions were Africans, such as Bilal Ibn Rabah. Indeed, when Muhammed Himself was asked about the meaning of the word "Arab", he said "Inama al Arabiyatu al-Lisan" "An Arab is one whose mother tongue is Arabic."

There are plenty of Black, Asian and Middle Eastern Jews. What people here seem to be referring to is the Hebrew tribes, of which all of the above groups share a bit of blood from. The European Jews are mixed with Hebrew blood, as are most of the other Jews of the world. Who cares. If my daughter marries an Ethiopian, I'll be as happy as with any other Jewish son-in-law.

The Jewish people are doing to themselves in a slower and more insidious way exactly what Hitler wanted., that is the total destruction of the Jewish people as a people of Semitic stock who like all peoples have their own traits and charecteristics.At least anti- semitism may become meaningless,as in future generations most so called " Jews " Won't have any Semitic blood in their veins at all, which would frustrate even the most ardent Nazi trying to work out who's who!
