Rosner's Domain: Joe Lieberman helps Obama re-educate the Democratic base

So, Senator Joe Lieberman will retain his position as Chaiman of the Homeland Security Committee. Not a huge surprise for those following the Lieberman drama in recent weeks and smarter than fifth graders. In truth, all you need is the ability of a fourth grader to do the math. With Lieberman: maybe sixty (Senators caucusing with the Democratic majority in the Senate). Without him: definitely less than sixty. A week ago, in Michael Tomasky's blog, there was a short and crisp explanation of the Joe Lieberman dilemma:

Lieberman crossed a line you don't cross in politics without expecting that there will be repercussions. But he needs to keep him in the fold, too, if it's possible. Tricky.

Add to the mix the personal element, as demonstrated by Democratic powerful Senators working for their old friend (the Politico was first to report that "Sens. Chris Dodd (D-Conn.), Ken Salazar (D-Colo.), Tom Carper (D-Del.) and Bill Nelson (D-Fla.) are all involved in the effort, according to top Senate Democratic aides. These four senators - along with other Lieberman allies - are reaching out to the rest of the Democratic Senate caucus to try to ensure Lieberman survives a secret ballot vote on whether to strip him of his chairmanship of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee").

And you got a smiling Lieberman, and an angry base. Many Democrats wanted Lieberman to disappear, many of them despise him. "If Lieberman retains the chairmanship, how will the base, who loathes the Independent Senator, react?" Chris Cillizza wrote a couple of days ago. "On the eve of the vote", he wrote this morning, "the netroots were a-blaze with anti-Lieberman rhetoric".

Didn't help much, did it?

I think this is only the beginning of a long, sometimes devastating re-education of the radical wing of the Democratic Party. Obama - as proved by his support for Lieberman to retain his chairmanship and also by his possible intention to appoint Clinton to head his foreign policy team (read "Cabinet post for Clinton roils Obamaland") – isn't going to fulfill the many dreams of his young and restless enthusiasts. Obama is now president-elect, and it's time to be a grownup. Lieberman - without even having such intention - is actually helping Obama and his friends. His reappointment will send them a sobering message: you can't always get what you want.

Whose President is he? Asked the NYT earlier this week:

The standard line from his advisers would naturally be that he's the president of all Americans. But it rarely works out that simply. Ultimately, the gauzy picture of the campaign trail sharpens in the act of governing. Ultimately, choices are made and illusions shattered. And so many of Mr. Obama's supporters invested so much passion in him that the potential for let-down seems considerable.

Now take the last sentence and re-write: instead of "potential", write "certainty". Instead of "seems considerable", write "is now reality".

Lieberman kept his chairmanship but lost the respect of at least the majority of Americans. His loyalty is suspect. We now see where his allegiance is ... with Israel first. We Americans can no longer trust Lieberman to do what is right for America. I hope the people of Connecticut replace him in two years. They almost did it once. The next time should do the trick. I plan to go there and work to help elect his opponent, in both the Democratic primary and the general election if necessary.

As a secular Jewish Zionist, I've been posting 2 years on the progressive/liberal Truthdig site, where Israel is repeatedly condemned as apartheid, Nazi et al, attempting to put rational refutation of the anti-Semite/anti-Israel dogma to moderate hostility if not change orientation. There are two of us remaining that have not been banned from the site. Only have made some small progress, but better than none, and could sure use some help. But you have to be thick-skinned; attacks are venomous. And DON'T use your real name! This site is the most anti-Israel "general issue- left" I know of.

daniel, i must tell you, your anti lieberman stance and your promise to set aside what certainly must be a substantive life, in order to politic against lieberman 2 years hence proves that you are a great american. as for me, i can't compare to you. i have a real life, and i know i'll be working to survive, AND paying taxes in 2 years. so, unfortunately, i won't be able to go to massachusetts to politic against barney frank for having repeatedly legislated home loans for people who hadn't EARNED the right to a mortgage. I saved a 20% down payment and maintained good credit!

As a registered Democrat in Connecticut, I am proud of Joe Leiberman. He has always acted based on his values and what he believes is in the best interest of America and not just the Democratic party. In our democracy I believe it is important to have representatives in government who are willing to say the "emperor has no clothes" even if you disagree with their assessment. Keep in mind that deep blue Connecticut re-elected him as their senator rather than vote in lock step with the democratic party.

Obama's decision to keep Lieberman may or may not have re-educated the base, but it will be the Jihad that will re-educate Obama - and Rosner too, for that matter.

Daniel of Atlanta: How dare you? Joe Lieberman is a patriotic American who also knows that Israel is the most dependable and trustworthy ally that the US has in the world. Daniel, I can only conclude that you are either a Marxist posing as a Democrat or a neo-Nazi posing as a Democrat. Either way you are a sham.

There are Jewish Libertarians and Republican who actually own guns. We will protect the weak and confused Jews who have not yet realized that the Party of the Plantation are the Democrats, that left them during the FDR era. Do you hear me!!! We have millions of gun totting Jews now in reasonable political positions. I'm sorry most Jews don't get it yet, and still vote for communists er..dumbocRATS. Please buy a gun and learn to protect yourself and your family. Come and get me! I've never shot an actual person before, please test me. Then leave the communists alone and join a real party.

Lieberman's n's position with Jewish voters was always overemphasized as more and more younger ones became eligable to vote He was not a true liberal as he represented and voted for the Imany insurance companies in his state.. For a while there appeared to be some reasoning problem. He remains as head of a commitee of the senate where his Jewish paranoia about enemies can be usful and also the democrats retained his caucus vote, He was never follower of the Conservative Republicans but was trapped when the maverick McCain tried to became one in order to win.

Daniel, for someone who cares so much about america first you seem to have a flagrant lack of knowledge about the constitution. senators serve 6 year terms, and Lieberman was reelected in 2006; his seat will be up for grabs in 2012, but if you want to go work the primaries in 2010 please be my guest, you might just be the only volunteer. also he probably will not run in the democrat primaries considering the fact he is a registered independent.

6. Graniteman: Marxist or neo-nazi? They are two sides of the same filthy coin (totalitarian collectivist secular religions). I take back the "coin": extreme ecologism is the third side. And all three hate guess which group? As for American Jews supporting the Democratic Party: my wife is a lifelong Democrat and generally liberal (and doesn't have a "racist" bone in her body), yet she voted for McCain this time. She is not leaving the Democratic Party. It is leaving her.

Daniel, you posted enough of your anti-semitic, pro-Obamite nonsense. Now go back to you copy of "Audacity of Hope" which I am quite sure is resting comfortably next to your copy of "Mein Kampf" - I called you exactly what you - and your little chimp - are six months ago - a typical Left coward. Guys like you aren't fit to shine the shoes of Joe Lieberman, a MAN, not a boy, who puts Country first above party, but even Chimp had to see the light, didn't he? Oh, don't forget to scream "Jew Lieberman" just as those who support "Gay Nazi" Ned Lamont did.

I cared enough about America to risk my life in combat. Did you? So, make it 2012, I can wait another two years, that will give me more time to build a network (I own www.netroots.us and plan to use the internet to organize the anti-Lieberman effort). Right now I am busy using e-mail to defeat the cowardly Saxby Chambliss here in Georgia, who attacked veteran Max Cleland in the most dishonorable manner. Chambliss is a chicken-hawk like Lieberman and George W. Bush, Dick Cheney, Paul Wolfowitz, and other neocons, men easily send others to die but refused to serve when it was their time.

Modern Liberalism is INHERENTLY antisemitic (and anti-American) beause it is a cult of indiscriminateness. Incpable of recognizing the better cultures -- something called "multiculturalism" -- they have no choice but to see success as unjust and failure as proof positive of victimization. America is the most successful nation in human history and since it can't be due to our unique culture the ONLY other explanation is that we are the biggest theives in human history. The Jews are the most successful people in history, since it can't be their culture, then they must be theives as well.

Thank God Danielle does not speak for all Americans. I think the only thing saving us from complete annihilation is that we are still Israel's ally. If I remember correctly, the promise to Abraham about "those who bless you I will bless, and those whom curse you I will curse", is still in effect. I don't remember a time limit on that promise. Read the book of Genesis for further research, if interested. Good for Joe Lieberman, and his supporters. Joe happens to be the only Democrat I know of that I would ever vote for. Keep up the good work Joe.

Evan, you can moan about liberalism all you want but it doesn't change the fact that countries, like people, do not get rich by giving than they take. Liberals believe balance is a better alternative to having rich and poor. Such balance is anathema to conservatives, of course, who work for the good of the few at the expense of the many (it's called "trickle down" by supply siders). The past eight years have shown the folly of Bush-style conservatism. America has rejected the results.

Joe Lieberman is Israels Best and Strongest Friend in Congess period. He is aove Honesty, Immensely Intellegent and a Wonderful Human Being and Great Orthodox Jew. My take is that if Obama and the Democrats didn't run to Connecticut to try to defeat Joe after He lost the Democratic Primary to the unknown Joe Lamont. So it wasn't Joe who crossed the Democrats it is the Democrats who flew in to Connecticut to try to defeat him, (Obama included.)They should have wholeheartedly endorsed Joe Lieberman for everything He had done for Connecticut, America and U.S. Jewry.A forthright AmericanMcCainhelped

Anne Schwartz: Dennis Ross is a disaster! It has been reported that he made the following statements in effect: "Israel must give up the Golan Heights to Syria. Syria has been 'quiet' quietest border, etc., etc. God forbid Israel should be pressured to sacrifice Har Golan. Syrian barbarians harbor hamas/hizbullah with arms supplies; they are in a state of war with Israel and demand UNCONDITIONAL...NO COMPROMISE 'RETURN' OF GOLAN. Israel's main water supply emanates from the Golan. For a piece of useless paper, Israel should sacrifice the Golan's vantage from above the Galilee for artillary tank fire!!
