Rosner's Domain: How Einstein divided American Jews

Here's one story you might want to read. It's from The Atlantic's latest issue, and it deals with Albert Einstein's tour of America in 1921. Take a look:

Newly published papers from that year, however, show a less joyful aspect to Einstein’s famous visit. He found himself caught in a battle between ardent European Zionists led by Chaim Weizmann, who was with Einstein on the trip, and the more polished and cautious potentates of American Jewry, including Louis D. Brandeis, Felix Frankfurter, and the denizens of established Wall Street banking firms. Among other things, the disputes about Zionism apparently caused Einstein not to be invited to lecture at Harvard and prompted many prominent Manhattan Jews to decline an invitation from him to discuss his pet project, the establishment of a university in Jerusalem.

And some more:

Brandeis and his cohorts at the Zionist Organization of America made matters worse, during Einstein's visit, when they reacted to a deadly clash between Arab and Jewish rioters in Jaffa by reinforcing their desire that adequate "safeguards" be in place before money was raised for Hebrew University. Einstein confided that this attitude made him suspect that the Brandeis crowd was "committing sabotage" of his mission. When Brandeis's friend and supporter Rabbi Judah Magnes proposed hosting a gathering in Manhattan for intellectuals to talk about the university, Einstein replied that he would come only if Magnes made the event a fund-raiser. "I did not have in mind a fund-raising meeting," Magnes replied in a cold and curt letter. "Under the circumstances, it is probably better to forego the meeting."

The resistance to Einstein's mission came not only from the Brandeis camp of cautious and restrained American Zionists, but also from successful New York Reform Jews of German heritage, many of whom were opposed to Zionism. When Einstein invited 50 or so of New York's most prominent Jews to a private meeting in his hotel, many of them declined.

The full story is here. An enjoyable and telling one.

I read the full article which is fascinatiing. It seems that nothing has changed. Substitute J Street for the "not in front of the Goyim" assimilated "Zionists" and antis, and AIPAC (and "the Jewish man in the street") for the ordinary ex-Russian, fervent Zionist supporters in the 1920s and we have the same situation again, today.

Looks like the more things change, the more they stay the same. But, in the final analysis, what history teaches us is that no matter our beliefs, religious or secular, Zionist or non-Zionist, Left or Right, we share a common fate. The Nazis did not discriminate, anti-Semites do not discriminate, & the Islamists will not discriminate - their goal to eliminate us spares no one. And this is why the Left is wrong, why appeasement is wrong.
3  |  Chris USA, Sunday Nov 15, 2009
Dear Michael Lewis, despite the superficialities this incident doesn't involve Israel the nation and ME peace whereas in the current confrontation it does. Such existential realities redefine the conflict such that a valid historical comparison does not exist. Certain elements either exist in their prenascient or historical perspectives but their relevence is limited in application to motivational origins. The war against Germany seemed more significant at the time yet it did not threaten 2 to 3 billion lives as todays hightened tensions do. History tends to be cyclic yet progresses forward.

Outstanding article by Walter Isaacson. It also counters the nonsense now circulating among the Israel-delegitimizers that Einstein was not in fact a Zionist. It is also a reminder that in the Jewish people's return to the land of Israel and building of a state there has never been an 'easy moment', and that always forces from within have worked against the real work of building.
5  |  Sally - U.S.A., Sunday Nov 15, 2009
It is interesting that Mr. Rosner has this article now. Right now Klein has been attacking people like Marty Peretz, but Peretz, Krauthammer, Rubin, etc... have been really hitting him back. Additionally, Clinton was in Israel (I guess Obama is trying the same type of public relations like when he sent the Clintons to campaign for him in the US & in front of AIPAC.) & given Clinton's statement that if Rabin had not been assasinated, there would have been peace - he may be trying to create a gulf between people in Israel so that they will turn against Netanyahu. But Clinton's recent (con't)
6  |  Sally - U.S.A., Sunday Nov 15, 2009
(con't) statement certainly contradicts his most famous statement: He told Arafat that he (Clinton) was a failure & it was because of Arafat.

What else is new ? You jews can't get along with each other let alone anybody else not of the tribe. Einstein was a weird bird. Received his education in a Catholic school. Married his 1st cousin in typical inbred jewish fashion. Too bad he didn't have nukes to use on NY city.

Terry is BACK!!..Good to see his refreshing insights, succinct analysis and sharp wit, again on the pages of JPost..Terry, when will you start your own column and blog?..We wait with much anticipation..Good to have you back.....

The fact that Einstein's fundraising tour took place BEFORE the Holocaust wiped out 6 million Jews in Europe, essentially proves that the anti-Zionists were wrong and the Jews that wanted to strengthen the Jewish presence in Israel were right. We have the same problem today with the wrong-headed lefty Jews.
10  |  Arkady, Los Angeles, Sunday Nov 15, 2009
At least, sober voices (##1&2). Fact of WW II Rotshilds in gas chamber was not a lesson for liberal huhems. Hitler, Stalin, Arafat and other scum made it clear: no matter religion, as long as one has Jewish blood, he has to be terminated. Refusal by different fractions of "palestinians" to accept self-humiliating Barak/Olmert/whoever offers for piece confirms once and for all their thirst for Jewish blood. Israel shall act accordingly. Depotration of terrorists/suspects families, iron fist against anemies is needed. Stone throwers shall get live ammunision responce. To be or not to be
11  |  Mike Feldman Canada, Sunday Nov 15, 2009
The Manhattan '"elites"were not dfferent that the Jews in Germany who thought Hitler would not harm them because they were "Germans". Khalid Sheikh Mohammed was not moved by the fact that Daniel Pearl was married to a Cuban buddhist. Left wing elitism is a belief that asserts that those who are ëlite"should control the lives of those who are not equipped to act in their own best interest. Threats to Jews do not differentiate political beliefs or where your sympathies are. Zebras can't change their stripes, Jews are Jews and regardless of their individual perception, anti-Semites don't have a scoring system.

Too bad he didn't have nukes to use on NY city. #7 Tom, you antisemites seem to keep coming out of your rat holes no matter how much rat poison the vermin control authorities send down there. In typical Jew hater fashion, you continue to make your irrational comments, including nuking New York. Tom, R U a terrorist? NY is USA.
13  |  Koev Rosh, Sunday Nov 15, 2009
to #7 Well Tommy boy (presumably non-Hebe) , Jews have a long way to catch up with you peaceful and harmonious Europeans - 3,000 + years of warfare: among Greek city-states, Latin tribes, Germanic barbarians, Celtic cannibals, Scot and Irish warring clans, Slavic and Mongol nomad savages, fightin' feudal kingdoms, Catholic-Byzantine papal wars, Viking raiders, French-English 100 Years War, Catholic-Lutheran Thirty Years War, imperialist native American genocide, slave trade, WWI, fascist, nazi and communist horrors; of course- Muslim murderers, African and Asian despots even worse!
14  |  Mike Feldman Canada, Sunday Nov 15, 2009
#7. Tom. I guess your idea of the daily bombings and slaughter of innocent civilians in Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan is your idea of Muslim Brotherhood. Jews actually use their minds when they don't agree. Somethin that will never be learned by Islamist extreemists.
15  |  joey, Sunday Nov 15, 2009
cant you even compose an accurate headline? you say einstein divided american jews.. actually it appears that american jews were divided before he arrived. and after he left.
16  |  Bert. US, Sunday Nov 15, 2009
Tom - Are you saying that Einstein would want to nuke NYC? That is straight out of left field. That is among the wierdest accusations that I have heard.
17  |  Edgar, Sunday Nov 15, 2009
"He found himself caught in a battle between ardent European Zionists led by Chaim Weizmann, who was with Einstein on the trip, and the more polished and cautious potentates of American Jewry..." More polished and cautious than Weizmann? I doubt it. What is the author trying to suggest with the throwaway comparison?
18  |  Tom, US, Sunday Nov 15, 2009
Considering the fragile mental condition of jews in general I really don't feel a need to respond to my detractors in here because you make all my points better than I ever could.

Magnes and Einstein are both gone, but all remember Einstiein sorry I can't say same about Magnes.

21  |  enola Gay USA, Sunday Nov 15, 2009
To me Einstein did us a favor in helping USA win World War 2.. Whether that will hit us all in the tuchas later on we'll see. But Albert Einstein is only one of many differences we Jews have. We reperesent so many different points of view that it is amazing we are still here after 4000 yrs. We go from Einstein, Freud, Jonas Salk, Disraleli, to Madoff. I love being Jewishj..we are to qoute EM Cioran .."the yeast that affects the flour" in this crazy world! GO ISRAEL>>NEVER AGAIN>>ISRAE USE EINSTEINS BOMB IF U HAVE TOO!!
22  |  Yudi F usa, Sunday Nov 15, 2009
What a great group of Jews that participated in the "Zionist " experiment. Men /women who in their own right were popular geniuses and contributors to the benefit of the world in all fields. And 64 years later all the world can talk about is ISRAEL. Are they angels or the devils? I happen to think that Zionism is the best thing that happened to the Middle east..It even woke up the sleeping Arabs! And all this while fighting a war against Islamic terror WOW! Am I proud of being Jewish..not that we are better than anybody, but we sure try hard! But maybe we should have kept God a secret!
23  |  RAMBO,thinking of Tom&lydia, Monday Nov 16, 2009
What else can you expect from a closet Islamist like "shagger Tom" who has a reputation of talking through his ass and often through his arab wife lydia's ass?? That's of course when her ass has a spell from laying chicken eggs for Gaza.
24  |  ABRACADABRA, Monday Nov 16, 2009
#16 Bert US,Tom is right, he knows because Einstien told him so. Nothing strange there considering Tom communicates with ghosts through his wierdo 'witch' doctor lydia's ass.
25  |  Creidim / Canada, Monday Nov 16, 2009
#14 Mike / Canada "Jews actually use their minds when they don't agree" Oh like Yigal Amir?
26  |  Haym, Jerusalem, Monday Nov 16, 2009
The most sad and tragic aspect to this story is, that those Jewish-In-The-Name-Only American "patriots" remained safely ensconced in their Manhattan banking offices, while those wo could be saved by speedy establishment of Jewish state - my grandparents, among those - were annihilated in Eastern Europe 20 years later.
27  |  lydia told me so, Monday Nov 16, 2009
#18 Everyone knows how "shagger Tom" makes HIS POINT. he sharpens it on lydia's ass laying chickens.
28  |  Mike Feldman, Canada, Monday Nov 16, 2009
Creidim Canada. Had to reach back 14 years to find one deranged Jew. Wanna find deranged Muslims, - read to-day's newpapers, or turn on your T.V.

Boy, the topic of Albert Einstein just flew of the window @ the speed of light. Of course, whe all is said and done, ya gotta admit, he was a snappy dresser! Oh, i gotta do a math question.

einstein did not divide jews -they were already divided and remain so--even after the holocaust we have jstreet assimilationists-reform and also religious anti-zionists--thank hashem daily for the idf and thank also ronald reagan for defeating communism and permitting aliyah in this way
32  |  dupree ny, Monday Nov 16, 2009
too many idiots here seem to equate all anti semites to nazis. they need to know history.the nazi genocide was an exception .throughout history jews have been able to convert or just assimilate out of the jewsih people.it sometimes took a generation or more but that was the norm. not som ehitler/haman saying you're dead if you have jewish blood period. that said it seems to me that the jews have a unique mission which all of mankind has a stake in so keeping us om track is in everyone's interest. remember even as the covenent went only thru isaac avraham sent his other children with gifts
33  |  Creidim / Canada, Monday Nov 16, 2009
#28 / Mike Feldman / Canada No, just found it a more appropriate response to your wide brush 'jews know how to talk about our problems' statement. When pressed to a point where any party feels 'dialogue' cannot help, they take extreme measures. Teitel is newer, but given that only 2 of his known victims were Jewish as far as I know, he is 'deranged', but when Settlers actions towards Palestinians are tolerated, allowed and sometiems encouraged by the State of Israel, you have to realize that 'Jews' are not a monolithic bloc, in their interpretation of their religion OR their politics.
34  |  Mike Feldman, Canada, Monday Nov 16, 2009
Creidim. Kindly point me to a Muslim site where there is open and free debate among Muslims representing different political views, and different ideas on how to proceed with the peace process.
35  |  Creidim / Canada, Monday Nov 16, 2009
#34 / Mike Feldman / Canada Unofrtunately, I don't read arabic, nor hebrew, so many of the 'common' forums where people discuss politics and faith, are by default, closed to me. However, being in Canada, you should acknowledge that there ARE panels, meetings and conferences that not only encompass multiple branches of a common faith (Jewish, Muslim and Christian) but also Inter-Faith groups that discuss politics/religion. I know Canada is not the only country with such groups. You cannot paint **ANY** Faith with such a wide brush, to do so is to ignore reality.
36  |  Lydia and Tom ..Oi vey USA, Monday Nov 16, 2009
Is Tom amd Lydia...(Isabella and Torquamada) really a couple. Boy. I ll bet they both holler scream anti Jewish epithets in the bedroom! "Ohhhhhhhhhhhhh Tommy...More! More! Heil hitler!" yells lydia! Can we imagine the monster that would come out of her womb! Oi Vey!
37  |  Mike Feldman, Canada, Monday Nov 16, 2009
Creidim. I'm starting to lose the train of thought you are advancing. In #33 your are telling me that I have to realize that Jews are not a monolithic bloc(k). No kidding, that was exactly my point in #14. In #35 you state that you don't read arabic or hebrew. Neither do I. This is an English speaking post who only qualification to post here is some understanding of English. There are plenty of English speaking Muslims, some can be found posting here. I'm not talking about inter-faith groups, I'd like to see a web site from an Islamic country which invites disparate conversations about politcs. CONT

That child would come out in hi-heels and drag, smoking a cigarette with a whip singing, " Let me entertain you tommy boy. Hop up and down on one foot and bark like a dog."
39  |  Mike Feldman, Canada, Monday Nov 16, 2009
Creidem. CONT. Faith is irrelevant. The Jews who post on this site run the gamut from very observant to closet atheist. Noone trys to promote their religious view as superior to someone else's. Evangelical Christians post on this site. You stated that you cannot paint any faith with such a wide brush, yet you reacted to my stating that Jews think with their minds, You may not like what they think, but this site, and who is permitted to post on it makes that point indesputable. In terms of some other faiths it seems dissention is not tolerated. If it is, I'd like to find out where I can witness the conversation.
40  |  Creidim / Canada, Monday Nov 16, 2009
39: Yes, I 'reacted' to your Generalization, and hold that Generalizations about *any* Faith/Nationality/Race/Group are to be considered suspect. And given that in #14, you lumped all Jews in one basket, but at least qualified Islamist with 'extreemist' I think my point is valid. There are extremists in *ALL* religions, and their actions cannot be taken as indicative of the opinion or belief of the WHOLE. You choose to turn a blind eye to the extremism WITHIN your community, while decrying the extremism it feeds in others. There are INTRAfaith Islamic websites, learn to use google.
41  |  wondering canada, Tuesday Nov 17, 2009
Mike Feldman, I believe you'd be able to witness dissention at one of the many public executions that are frequently held. Beyond that, I don't know where to advise you.

36,38,The child has already been born as a toad named Ahmedenjeb. He's a "spitting" image (spit-spit-spit) of his lunatic parents. Now you know what those toads lydia and Tom look like:---TOADS. I can vouch for THAT, I delivered that vile toad.

44  |  MELODY USA, Tuesday Nov 17, 2009
g-d said in the bible the jews will get their land back.they did in 1948.when he thinks the gentiles are full, then he will bring back the jews to him.we cannt stop this happening! g-d said if you halp israel he will stand, reward you,if you dont stand with israel he will curse you.i wont go against g-d.all races have bad and good.we are not without sin.but jesus died for us,gave us a sec chance.i try to be the best i, can be.g-ds greatest commandment is to love one other.also to love him first and only him,not to use his name in vain.and keep his holy day.nothing else matters.we learn to (cont)

42 feldman/Nugget, making fun of someone else's looks, that's rich coming from a jew, one not famed for theirs. Now I have heard it all. Roflmao! Mate I am quite happy with mine, yours obviously is as foul as your language but alas it is the only way you believe you'd ever get any notice.
47  |  Mike Feldman, Canada, Tuesday Nov 17, 2009
A person in the latter stages of paranoid delusion looks at the words AYATOLLA ASSA HOLLA and sees the word "feldman". There's not much left of you to lose. Your desperation to use my name in your posts is actually quite pitiful. (In keeping with the content of your posts).
48  |  lydia's muslim cousin, Tuesday Nov 17, 2009
46,Go lydia Go,stand up for your looks. So what if you have a toady bearded face like your son "Ah mad ding dong jabber bad" after all beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Just as well you hide your face behind a veil like a good muslim woman so in your case the question of beauty doesn't arise anyway, nor the question of being noticed. Always be careful not to lift your veil when you lift your skirt.
49  |  BATTLECRY, Tuesday Nov 17, 2009
46 NOBODY's language is as foul as lydia's Jew hating posts and NOBODY's mind is as deranged as lydias' and NOBODY's imagination is as "loose" when making judgements about the posters. But of course she talks through her "loose' ass which is as worn out as those lame insipid mumbo jumbo garbled garbage she peddles. Time she got her ass a rebore,it might help firm up her loose speech. She just cant accept that theres a whole army of posters toying with her,
50  |  Mike Feldman, Canada, Tuesday Nov 17, 2009
#40. Creidim. I have been burning up the websites in Jordan, Syria, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Iran looking for "inter-faith" websites. Thought I was a good googler, but I just can't find any. My point is the fact that there are inter-faith websites in Canada is not relevant to events in the Middle East. And I promise you, to keep the conversation civil, these inter-faith posters don't go into politics, unless the Jewish participants are far left wingers, which is a whole nother story. Despite your twists and turns, there is absolutely no evidence of Jews blowing each other up because they are members of different congregations. The security hired to defend synagogues is not there to protect the worshippers from fellow "extremist" Jews.
51  |  Creidim / Canada, Tuesday Nov 17, 2009
#50. Mike Feldman: You must be the ex-TO politician, to be able to so deflty avoid the issue. No, Jewish extremists don't conduct suicide bombings, but they have resorted to assasination, all the way back to the 40's, anyone who is seen as an 'obstacle' is considered fair game, not a week ago you had a extremist Rabbi writing a book exploiting 'loopholes' to justify the murder of anyone who wasn't Jewish, or opposed their plans. I am not blaming the Jews for everything, or Judaism in General, but neither will I accept the premise that many on JPost adhere to, that all Muslims are terrorists
52  |  Mike Feldman, Canada, Wednesday Nov 18, 2009
#51. Creidim. You win, not all Muslims are terrorists.
53  |  Anti Terrorist, Thursday Nov 19, 2009
51,52, Hold on you two,the notion that all Muslims may not be terrorists is "prima face" BUT is debunked given their culture of Islam spawns terrorism when it's Jihad agenda of putting the fear of death into the infidel who opposes conversion is openly stated. Absolutely that fear = terror = being terrorised. Muslims aid and abett terrorism by embracing Islam and are accessories before, during and after the fact in terrorist acts and are equally guilty as terrorists.Any Muslim who denies this is denying Islam.

The Israel Factor, Sep. 2009: Obama is rapidly losing favor with panel of Israeli experts

Recent Comments

Arthur, Miami-Florida: Go Rudy!! It sounds like American Jews are finally waking up to the disaster that is Obama and his ultra-left wing cohorts. What kind of an American president appoints a self-proclaimed communist to his government? How about the Mao lovers? He promised to keep Jerusalem united (for 24 hrs.) Runs around the world hugging dictators (Hugo Chavez) bowing before Muslim Kings (Saudi) and Japanese Emperors all while apologizing for American greatness. Then he turns around and brings KSM to NYC for a trial that will focus on the evils of the Bush Administration. What kind of nonesense is this?
Joe the Plumber - Canton, Ohio: Joseph Baltimore: Please note - one has the freedom to go to a private religious institution and pray all day to one's heart content instead of studying Reading ,Writing and Arithmetic along with evolution. We are paying public taxes to educate, not indoctrinate. Besides, everyone has the right to pray in a public school, and to my understanding , praying is between the individual and G-d, and in that manner, he or she may do so - quietly , after the pledge . We need not turn public schools into religious tent rallies inundated by morons that "speak in tongues". Period! Grow up!
the EQUALISER: #80, superchickenwoman lydia you say ".......turfed out more than I've had hiccups" Please clearify, do you mean those hiccups each time you lay an egg, or each time you lift your skirt??
