Comments: 20      If you have the time to read Cordesman, and you're interested in the strategic implications of the Gaza war, take a look here. If your time is limited, here's a paragraph or two: The end result is that it is far from certain that Israel's tactical successes achieved The report says the military was ready and in much better shape than in 2006 Lebanon. It also talks about "lack of diplomatic strategy". Does this mean Cordesman would vote for Barak and not for Livni? significant strategic and grand strategic benefits. In practice, they seem to have had only a marginal impact on Hamas, and their benefits may well have been offset by the mid and long-term strategic costs of the operation in terms of Arab and other regional reactions. Such conclusions are necessarily uncertain, but Israel does not seem to have been properly prepared for the political dimensions of war, or to have had any clear plan and cohesive leadership for achieving conflict termination. Moreover, it seems to have approached the fighting, and the Arab world, with from a strategic perspective that will increase instability in the region and ultimately weaken Israel's security.

I'm afraid Obama will be no friend to Israel. I hope I'm wrong but he's back peddling on pretty much every promise he made to get elected, financial or otherwise (and it's not like he made many promises to Israel to begin with). Typical politician. But the point is, Israel will probably have less support from the US in the next four years then it's had in the last 8. Not good news for the good guys.

Today, it is very realistic to UNiTE or Merge Israel, Lebanon & Teurkey 1st, under a Genuine true-Secular UnITED States of LEVANT (and Use the Euro for currency, not Dollars and ! Like the EURO model, where Slowly but Shurely One or two Additional States can Join the U.S. of LEVANT! i.e., If Palistine wants in (Free of & no more Hamas, Hebellyz et al) the U.S. Levantia then O.K. , but No SHARIA, not HALAKAH, not CASTE, not APARTHiED ever again! Israel wins the military battle and loses the political battle afterwards. This is almost always the case. There is no point criticizing Israeli leaders as not being 'prepared'. The deck is so stacked against Israel it cannot win 'political battles'. Look at those U.N. votes. Israel has one ally which must take on the world every time a resolution is prepared in the U.N. Israel does not have an automatic sixty nations behind it as the other side always does. Israel too has a hypocritical , often one- sided world - media to deal with. Winning politically is surviving until the next time.

I wonder why you do not do the obvious. Instead of bombing the tunnels why not dig a trench from the med. to the Israel border. Let's say 200 feet across and 100 feet deep and then flood it.
the tunnels will be gone and to remake them would take a very long time.

A million thanks Per Larsson. Don't worry about your spelling. Have admired Tony Cordesman's military analysis since the first Gulf War. But now you've asked him to venture out into the wider world. "Conflict termination"? Many in the Arab/Muslim world and beyond won't be satisfied until Israel itself, or Israel as a Jewish state, is terminated. Fuller answer on this is a repeat of #10 Shalom Freedman. #2 Tom, whose continuing posts show a disdain if not a hatred for Israel, have to ask what ethnic cleansing? The only ethnic cleasing I've seen lately is pulling 8-9,000 Jews out of Gaza.

Consider just the last 61 years...Israel made an appropriate response. The issue is far less about Israel's response, and more that the entire Arab league conveniently uses/funds the PLO/Hamas/and whatever incarnation comes next as it's forward facing "policy" toward Israel -- which is to wage perpetual war against Israel . The ongoing story isn't about Israel...welll yes it is. It is about the unwaivering Islamic goal of annihilation of Israel. A sad commentary on the condition of the global human heart which tolerates 61 years, and counting, of terror, war, obfuscation, bloodshed.

No matter what ! after a win or a success, there is going to be alot of critisizem, now you have to examin the motives, for why you went to war. then if your motives were good, say for the security of your nation.
