Eliot Cohen's somewhat depressing but also sober view:

Pressure, be it gentle or severe, will not erase that nuclear program. The choices are now what they ever were: an American or an Israeli strike, which would probably cause a substantial war, or living in a world with Iranian nuclear weapons, which may also result in war, perhaps nuclear, over a longer period of time.

His conclusion (shared by many Israeli high officials, but not necessarily most Americans):

It is, therefore, in the American interest to break with past policy and actively seek the overthrow of the Islamic Republic. Not by invasion, which this administration would not contemplate and could not execute, but through every instrument of U.S. power, soft more than hard.

Not all Cohens always agree. But in this case, (NYT's) Roger does:

I’ve said this before: Sanctions won’t work. Ray Takeyh, who worked on Iran with Dennis Ross at the State Department before losing his job last month and returning to the Council on Foreign Relations, told me that “sanctions are the feel-good option. Yes, it feels good to do something, but it doesn’t necessarily help. In this case, sanctions won’t for four reasons.

I don't think Roger Cohen would go for Eliot Cohen's remedies, but disbelief in sanctions must have some implications. WP's Richard Cohen doesn't think Obama's warnings on Iran are credible - and even though he doesn't say it, this will also make sanctions less likely to work:

When Obama said in Pittsburgh that Iran is "going to have to come clean and they are going to have to make a choice," it had the sound of an ultimatum. But what if the Iranians don't? What then? A president has to be careful with such language. He better mean what he says.

The trouble with Obama is that he gets into the moment and means what he says for that moment only. He meant what he said when he called Afghanistan a "war of necessity" -- and now is not necessarily so sure. He meant what he said about the public option in his health-care plan -- and then again maybe not. He would not prosecute CIA agents for getting rough with detainees -- and then again maybe he would.

Israel will not launch an airstrike against Iran.
2  |  Chris USA, Tuesday Sep 29, 2009
Sanctions could indeed work if China and Russia were brought on board. For example a Chinese investment in Afghanistan could be counterpoint to sanctions on Iran. If crippling sanctions were effectively implemented Russia would take preemptive action to prevent the US from exploiting Iranian weakness possibly doing to Iran what iran is doing to Hezbollah. If the Iranians resist it could easily turn into a Russian sponsored US regime change in Iran. Russia supports a strong Iran. It doesn't support a confrontation with western powers with a weak Iran - that equals a loss for Russia.

A third option is possible, namely that the world could satisfy itself thought monitoring and intel that Iran's nuclear materials are fully accountable and peaceful in nature. I for one hope that Iranians self interest will direct them to accommodating such an outcome. I am heartened that leaders in the UK France and others appear ready to confront Iran with creditable crippling sanctions while reserving options if such sanctions fail to impress upon the Iranians the dire nature of the course they are taking.

Right now the problem is that American policy towards Iran is both naive and in reverse. Yesterday, Robert Gibbs stated that Iran has a decision to make. Iran has already made its decision. That should be abundantly clear. It is, in fact the U.S. that has a decision to make, because I'll venture to say that the Irsraelis have also made a decision. The Obama administration does not have the wiggle room on this one that it would like. Either the U.S. leads an alliance which dissuades Irans from going nuke or Israel will take action. Fro,m what I've seen in the last few days, a conventionally armed Iran is dangerous enough.
6  |  bannister, USA, Tuesday Sep 29, 2009
NO progress with double standards. Sanctions will lead only to Irans withdrawal from the NPT. A strike will bring about the end of Israel at best. Iran behaves like they do not because they are weak and bluffing but because they have what it takes to erase you already. Of course you can roll the dice any time you feel lucky.

Eliot and Roger agreeing? That is funny in itself. I still say sanctions could make them budge if negotiations fail. We cannot depend on Russia and especially China. But, many investments go through American banking and you could close all loopholes. A military solution is unwise and not supported by most of the west and I wouldn't give Cohen my time. Roger had some sound points, but he dodges the question that if we don't draw a line in the sand with Iran, it sends a message to other countries that may be thinking nuclear weapons there will be no fight.

You can't stand for something, if you don't have anything to stand for. The problem with Obama, is he has never developed a True MORAL core. Very dangerous when dealing in an IMMORAL World. Unfortunately, it is not something you can learn overnight.

By any decent and sensible standard, Iran has lost the right to self-determined nationhood. The government and military should be dismantled and the land occupied by an international (UN?) occupying and administrative force. Land in the NE should be given towards creation of a Kurdistan, in the north donations to Azerbaijan, etc. The Persians should live under such rule for at least 50 years. What we need is a statesman who could work towards achieving this--a real Churchillian or Palmerston or T.Roosevelt figure, ready to call for a military draft...
11  |  Jer, USA, Tuesday Sep 29, 2009
Sanctions will not work. Iran will push until they are stopped outright. The world knows the goal of that regime, they say it all the time, as in, my whole life. I genuinely do not wish to speak of things that are beyond my heart's ability to bare, but there are costly tolls no matter which way it goes, that is just where we are now. Do not fear, it is a tyrant. Israel, do what you need to do to defend your people. Hope to see you all soon and I personally wish you the best.

The Pentagon has brought forward to December 2009 the target-date for producing the first 15-ton super bunker-buster bombs (GBU-57A/B) Massive Ordinance Penetrator, which can reach a depth of 60.09 meters underground before exploding.

Israel started the arms race in the middle east and refuses to abide by international law. So why should any of Israel's neighbors play by the rules ? Iran has a responsibility to defend their nation against the psychopaths in the stolen land.
14  |  Jer, USA, Tuesday Sep 29, 2009
Tom, when was the last time thousands of Israelis chanted "death to Iran, death to Syria" in their holy houses or at the temple mount? I've never seen it on the news, or youtube.com, or anywhere. You actually think Israel wants the land of Persia? Since 1948, lets count the number of times the Jews have set out to take over the muslim nations, Egypt, Syria, Iraq, Iran, etc to conquer... none. As for their land, 1948, the US denied them, England denied them, the UN made it happen but now hates them. It seems that many choose to forget the past.
15  |  ABEL, US, Tuesday Sep 29, 2009
First lets clarify about the Land of Israel. The land belongs to GOD, just like the rest of the universe. God gave the land to Abraham the father of Israel. Now as for Iran, their main purpose is to destroy Israel. That will never happen, GOD will defend Israel. Israel is always being attacked, the 6 day war, Iraqi war in 1991, Hezballah from Lebanon, on and on. One thing will happen some day, GOD will return all the land that he gave Abraham to ISRAEL.
16  |  American Israeli, Tuesday Sep 29, 2009
to #13. You're a retard. Israel had to have that arsenal to keep the Arabs at bay - the arabs who outnumber them 100 to 1 and are bent on their annihilation! Israel has nukes, we all know that, but have they ever used them? Against Saddam? Against Iran? Against Hamas? Against Hizbollah? No. Why? Because they are deterrent. Iran doesn't want deterrent - he wants to genocide Israel solely for being Jews, the enemy of that devil worship known as ISLAM. Iran proves their motives by being the biggest sponsor of terror world-wide. Terrorists w/nukes - UNACCEPTABLE and you know it!
17  |  M Scott USA, Tuesday Sep 29, 2009
Russia is big supplier to Iran and won't vote to sanction them, nor will China. It will come to a head soon and action will have to be taken, enough playing their games in the public forums. Like Saddam, Iran continues to thumb their noses!! If going to use weapons then two bunker busting bombs, one for the one nuclear site already known, and one for this one they have been hidding. Obama knew of this since last Summer? I think they are all waiting to see if Israel bombs them first or if they will wait for Iran to make first move. Russia will gain in weapons sales either way!
18  |  Tom, US, Tuesday Sep 29, 2009
14 | Jer - Obviously you either haven't been reading the posts in here or else you are willfully ignorant. The Israeli's have been chanting death to Iran online for a few years now. With a number of posters calling for Iran to be nuked. Now why in hell wouldn't Iran or any of Israel's neighbors want to have military parity with psychopaths like this ? If they didn't then it would be sign of their own mental instability !
19  |  Mike Feldman Canada, Tuesday Sep 29, 2009
#16. American Israeli. Tom is a member of the American N-z- Party, aka National Socialist Party,(see his post #17 on September 24.) Tom is a sideline weenie who cheers for anyone who favours the destruction of Israel. His hero is Adolph Hitler yet he proclaims his allegiance to Barak Obama. The best he can do is incite anger on this site with his ridiculous posts.
20  |  richard, Tuesday Sep 29, 2009
It's not necessary to invade Iran, that would be a disaster. But the U.S. has uncontested air power. First bomb the nuclear sites. If iran retaliates with terrorist attacks, bomb all the economic sites and military installations. Use air power. Russia will make a lot of noise because of its trade with Iran but ultimately they'll do nothing.Same is true for china and even most Sunni arab states who would love to see the Islamic Shi'ite regime crushed though they'll cry crocodile tears. Israel can't do it. And sadly that incompetent Obama won't
21  |  Dr Dan USA, Tuesday Sep 29, 2009
Distract anti-government Iranians by dropping in millions of new cell phones. Then land a special force team outside of each suspected facility to go in and blow it up. Better to lose military commando casualties than to drop bombs from above.
22  |  Raskalnikov - Djibouti, Tuesday Sep 29, 2009
It's time to call Russia and China out on the floor. Their excuse of economic ties being their reason for not supporting iranian sanctions is the weakest excuse ever. As if Iran could afford to punish either Russia or China for supporting sanctions. Clearly, russia more so than China, sees this situation as a great way to either trap America in a third war or to make America look weak by allowing Iranian nukes. It's time for Russia to behave like a big boy and get out of the way. They have no hope of winning a war against the US no interest in staying in the game if things heat up.

16 "Israel need the arsenal to ... Arabs at bay" is that why Israel armed S.A's apartheid regime with WMDs and why Israel passed their Nuke tech. unto Iran? "The Arabs outnumber them", who asked your mongrel lot to pitch tents amongst the antsy Arabs? Not much of a deterrent, if Israel expansion across Arab land has been staunched by a bunch of rag tag resistance fighters and Israel is reduced to dropping WMDs ie white phosphorus, dime missiles, cluster bombs etc on defenseless Palestinian civilians. Why should Israel be the only one allowed to flaunt Int. laws? " Whats good for the goose.."

Bomb Iran's oil fields and nuke sites...but first wait for Ahmadinjerkoff to invite bannister and Tom to visit the place! NEVER AGAIN!
25  |  Sandra Sue, Wednesday Sep 30, 2009
Sanctions will only hurt the rank and file Iranians, many of whom oppose the "dictator" and his Basij brownshirts. This will increase the hatred of the people of Iran for us. The only solution is an internal attempt to overthrow the Islamic government (through contacts with Moussavi and other moderates on the ground inside the country) and replace it with a secular government, combined with an Israeli/US air attack on all military/nuclear installations and all locations where the Basij and other mullocrats congregate. No occupation, let the "moderates" take control and impose secular govt.
26  |  iransux; usa, Wednesday Sep 30, 2009
Sorry Lydia, Israels actions are self-defense; and when they nuke Iran it will be for the same reason. I understand that a lot of people would rejoice in a world without Israel; just as many will rejoice more, once the gutter regime of Iran is vaporized into Nuclear waste.....So get over it...Ehud and Bibi will decisively prevail over Mahmoud and the filthy ayatollahs!
27  |  israelblows; usa, Wednesday Sep 30, 2009
Good ! Because once the gutter regime in Iran is vaporized in to nuclear waste bend down and grab your ankles because about 45 seconds later the gutter regime in Israel will be vaporized in to nuclear waste.

All this vitriol is not good for your souls people. This virtual warfare crystallises opinions and undermines those genuine efforts, wherever/whenever they take place; ultimately denying the peace and security to a populous presently unable to rid themselves of these elite figures corrupted by power and wealth. Recognise this is a spiritual war between principalities and powers, using the human carnal mind to achieve their aims. Listen to your spirit and let the Spirit guide your thoughts and actions...
33  |  Texianbiker Dallas, Wednesday Sep 30, 2009
Iran has Hamas and Hizbolla, two proxies to engage enemies outside its borders while providing a measure of deniability. Iran also has a large and disaffected population opposing the current political status quo. It sounds to me like a perfect opportunity to fund and support a proxy warfare effort within Iran's borders. Two plus two equals four... the best of diplomatic solutions.

It is a wonder to me how the inttectually deprived posters on this Blog know the qualitative and quantitative expertise of Israels military capability. If the Isralies attack it will be because they believe they can do imense damage to Irans Nuclear program or they will not attack. No Military in its right mind would attack with the knowledge that they will fail. That is Suicide. As for Irans Counter, as of this writing, and if an attack occurs within the next six months, Iran will not have a Nuke to send to Israel. If in fact Israel may use their nukes first, Tactical would be acceptable.

America is no longer the leader of anything. We have a president that is made up of bluster, empty words, and the personna of a used car salesman. I am a retired disabled veteran, that never thought communists, we were sent thousands of miles to fight would be in power in the US. The fact that we have a commander and chief that's a spineless, marxist coward that made the public statement that maybe victory wasn't the goal in Afghanistan shows his true make-up. He doesn't evan talk to his commanders, so you know you have to go it alone. ISRAEL today, tomorrow, and forever!!!!!C

Tom, and others, you spew venom like those of the past. Hardly worthy of a response except to say, you are wrong. You play the hatred cards every post. I'm not an MOT (member of the tribe) but I have no problem seeing reality and, your insidious lies and manipulating ideas are a pattern. (Who are you following?) It proves your heart, it is ill. Jer US, thanks Jer for your support. It is heartwarming to know there are 'non Jews" that wish us Jews well, you understand that all free and independant people are all tied together against Extreme Islamists and Jew haters.Jew haters cause more murder among the world's good people but not only Jews. For when Jews are being killed, many, many more non Jews are killed. In WW2 over 60 million non Jews were killed..six million were Jews! Witness in here..Jew and God haters like banister, Tom, Lydia, to name a few. Thats why is so nice to hear from non Jews who support Israel..there is hope! .

I think we need to get our heads around one thing. When Amadenejad says he will destroy Israel, he is not speaking rhetorically. He is speaking literally. Ahmadenejad and his bosses believe that first Al-Madhi then Jesus will return to earth. Al-Mahdi is the Islamic messiah, and he's number one. Jesus is his deputy. Then a Jihad will occur between the forces of good and evil. Liitle Satan-Israel, big Satan-US vs. the true believers. This will precede the Last Days. Jesus will slay Dajjal, marry, have children and proclaim Islam as the last word of God, This is Amadenejad's living dream. The Americans and Europeans simply have no idea what they're dealing with.

Israel is afraid that Iran might do what it did. ie Behind a veil of lies develop nuclear weapons. eg. A dummy control room was built in Dimona to fool the US inspectors on the 1 inspection allowed. It successfully hid the plutonium extraction plant & the extent of the Dimona facility. Israel lied to 3 US presid`ts & the world for yrs. In 1976 when the battle was not going well Israel readyed a nuclear bomb for use against Egypt. Israeli archaeolgy says there was No Moses No Divine Right. The Pal`s had nothing to do with the holocaust & should not have to pay for it with their lives & land

41 | ARSH - So let me get this straight. All of you psychopaths in here who foam at the mouth to slaughter unarmed women and children as in Gaza, you call that love right ? People like me who point out the fact that you are all racist psychopaths and shouldn't be allowed anywhere near weapons, that makes us the haters by your twisted psychopathic Islamophobic racist logic right ? You people are in deep serious need of therapy and I suggest that the sooner you begin the better.
44  |  Mike Feldman, Canada, Thursday Oct 01, 2009
#41. ARSH. Let me offer you a couple of definitions of projection. Personally I think they describe at least 2 of our prolific posters. "Psycological projection is the unconscious act of denial of a person's own attributes, thoughts and emotions which are ascribed to the outside world or another person or people" In classical psycology projection is always seen as a defensive mechanism that occurs when a person's own unacceptable or threatening feelings are repressed and then attributed to someone else. I think there are only a couple of psycopaths here, and they are avoiding their own reality by pointing their sick fingers at anyone who doesn't share their consumption by hate.
45  |  Mike Feldman, Canada, Thursday Oct 01, 2009
Hey Duncan. Which battle wasn't going so well in 1976? How do you know that Israel lied to three American Presidents? Maybe there was a don't tell, if we don't ask thing going on. Your archaeolgy business is horseshit, and Moses wasn't around in 1948 anyway. I don't recall Israel ever threatening to wipe Egypt off the map. Do you? The only thing you said that was correct is that the Pals had nothing to do with the Holocaust. There was one Palestinian for sure, but I won't go into that. The Pals don't have to pay for Israel's existance with their lives and their land.So far, its been their choice.

The Messiah is coming soon. Israel will be the head and not the tail, during Messiah's millennial reign from Jerusalem. Every nation will have to come up to jERUSALEM and everyone will want to touch the coats of the Jews. Wonderful, Israel will still be here with her Saviour Yesuha Messiah, and everyone in the world will have to bow the knee and profess that jESUS YESUHA IS LORD AND KING. GOD BLESS ISRAEL AND EVERYONE WHO LOVES ISRAEL. All these events are coming very soon. Praise God.

48  |  Jonah in Jamaica, Thursday Oct 01, 2009
Mike Feldman understands the insanity which rules Iran. Their goal is clear. Obama does not have the understanding or strength to undertake military action. Sarcozy called him naive and too egotistical to listen to anyone. Obama is a zero. It is up to Israel to do what it can and risk the consequences. Even a failed attack on Iran's nuke sites may result in favorable world action thereafter. To do nothing in this case is to court disaster.
49  |  driverq5 USA, Thursday Oct 01, 2009
sanctions would have worked 5 years ago.. Now there is no time to rely on them as Iran is probably near having a bomb and a delivery system to hold the world hostage. The suspected sites need to be blasted, then we can talk sancions. Japan was just as fanatial but came into line quickly and became a good neighbor only after they faced destruction. Iran will have to play by the rules when they lose the nuclear option and are just another oil rich country , albeit without the power to destroy everyone within 1500 miles. GO FOR IT Israel, Obama is a Chicago political thug without a clue..

Its quite interesting Russia on this particular issue seems to be a wild card. If you listen to Mededev it seems that they will back sanctions on Iran, but what of Putin who seems to be silent on the matter. Impartially I am putting at 50/50 and hope someone will do some analysis after the fact (whenever the sanctions are issued).

52 I think Putin is as mad as hell and ain't going to take it anymore!. Israeli military advisers/ instigators behind the Georgia conflict fled home, leaving Shakaasvilli to face Putin alone. Putin has threatened to string Shakaasvilli up by his balls. I shudder to think what he has in store for said Israeli military advisers when he gets hold of them. Israel have been shuttling back and forth to Russia, even returning the Russian Park as token of good will but Putin has already moved some 10 vessels into Syrian harbors in anticipation, I believe of exacting his revenge.
