Biden's statement of east-Jerusalem building:

"I condemn the decision by the government of Israel to advance planning for new housing units in East Jerusalem. The substance and timing of the announcement, particularly with the launching of proximity talks, is precisely the kind of step that undermines the trust we need right now and runs counter to the constructive discussions that I've had here in Israel. We must build an atmosphere to support negotiations, not complicate them. This announcement underscores the need to get negotiations under way that can resolve all the outstanding issues of the conflict. The United States recognizes that Jerusalem is a deeply important issue for Israelis and Palestinians and for Jews, Muslims and Christians.  We believe that through good faith negotiations, the parties can mutually agree on an outcome that realizes the aspirations of both parties for Jerusalem and safeguards its status for people around the world.  Unilateral action taken by either party cannot prejudge the outcome of negotiations on permanent status issues.   As George Mitchell said in announcing the proximity talks, "we encourage the parties and all concerned to refrain from any statements or actions which may inflame tensions or prejudice the outcome of these talks."

Strong language (condemn), but something's missing? - "particularly when the VP is in Israel for a visit and might be embarrassed by such decision".

Three quick comments:

1. This latest brouhaha will surely become yet another right-left debate on building in east Jerusalem. It should not - because it's not about building, and not about Jerusalem: It is about the competence of the Netanyahu government.

2. If fact, there's no debate to be having. All people, left and right, should be concerned by this show of stupidity.

3. Either one believes Netanyahu and his friends in government (saying it is all misunderstanding and bad timing). In such case, one should be concerned by Israel's chaotic decision-making process on delicate matters. Or - one might choose not to believe. One might think Netanyahu isn't telling the truth, or that Yishai is bluffing. If it's the former, one will conclude that Netanyahu has no intention of seriously exploring the just-announced peace negotiations. If it's the latter one will realize that Shas and Yishai are strong enough to toy with Netanyahu as much as they want - as much as embarrassing the American VP! - without paying a price. Not an encouraging thought.

How about 4. The Netanyahu Coalition is awash with radical extremists intent upon making everything a religious issue incapable of being resolved. Hence the public embarrassment of Biden and Bibi both to show "who's" really in control...
2  |  Merry Go Round, Wednesday Mar 10, 2010
Ain't nothin' new. Those Jew hoodlums are on a crazed stealing binge. No matter, what goes around comes around...
3  |  Liz UK, Wednesday Mar 10, 2010
All of Jerusalem belongs to Israel! There is no moratorium on building in Jerusalem, Bibi has to show that before there becomes a moratorium on building there by default. This is not a matter that concerns the proximity talks members.
4  |  Shalom, Wednesday Mar 10, 2010
Mr. Rosner, look at # 1 and @ 2 to find out who iare agreeing with you.
5  |  Terry - Eilat, Israel, Wednesday Mar 10, 2010
I thought the timing was perfect. Let's get real here, it's time to end this one-sided game of concessions & criticism of Israel when no one mentions the Palestinians lack of similar concessions. Anyway, you would think that only Israel should not give the Obama administration the finger when almost every REAL enemy of America has been doing so all year. Jerusalem is OURS, period. It is not a settlement, it is NOT up for negotiation. Just because the Palestinians make claims does not mean we have to give any legitimacy to that claim.
6  |  Terry - Eilat, Israel, Wednesday Mar 10, 2010
Our less-than-patriotic Left would just love to create problems for Netanyahu even at the cost of harming our national interest. They used this disgusting strategy the last time Netanyahu was PM during the Clinton administration. I'm not a Netanyahu fan by any means, he was wrong to accept the two-state solution just to please Obama. He was wrong to accept any settlement freeze. Nonetheless, I would never think of undermining our elected gov't. to please hostile foreign interests, I'll leave that lack of scruples to Leftists.
7  |  Terry - Eilat, Israel, Wednesday Mar 10, 2010
Everyone with half a brain knows nothing will come of these ''proximity talks'' - those that support such talks aren't interested in results, just keeping the process going. It's a charade, a phoney baloney make-believe bunch of BS so politicians & the ''peace industry'' can pretend some ''progress'' - progress always being defined as some Israeli concession since no one ever asks the Palestinians for any concessions. It's exactly like the morons who talk about stopping Iran with diplomacy & pretend sanctions or the total fools who want to ''engage'' Syria.
8  |  Mladen Andrijasevic , Be'er Sheva, Israel, Wednesday Mar 10, 2010
The nuclear threat from Iran is becoming more imminent by the day and what is Biden spending his time on? Denouncing the building of new homes in Jerusalem! Historians of the future will have a problem understanding this period in history.
9  |  David Maryland, USA, Wednesday Mar 10, 2010
In my mind the sad truth is that there are no viable peace negotiations at this time and after years of stalled talks and failed peace processes, we are back to square one. War in some shape or form is becoming inevitable because there is no will for peace on either side. Joe Biden has always been a friend of Israel, but the timing of this announcement is an insult at a time when Israel's friends are far and few between. Anyone can take a moral high ground, but it cannot be in Israel's best interest to let extremists dictate its future, especially when the extremists are in power.
10  |  Shlomo, Israel, Wednesday Mar 10, 2010
If you make more of this than it is, than you are a fool who has no idea about how the planning process is conducted in Israel. It is a proffessional process that has it's own guidelines and is not neccessarily dependent on the political echelon. In fact, the real government decision was taken a long time ago probably and the planning bodies just settled the details and are now giving the "technical" approval. Enough of small time political pundits who have no idea about how things are run in a democratic country where decisions are given their final "green light" after public hearings.
11  |  Jerry (USA), Wednesday Mar 10, 2010
Mr. Rosner must have a philosphy that "peace at all costs" is a reasonable approach with the vast muslim enemy Israel faces. The fact of the matter is that peace will NOT come unless Israel is strong and shows that, without reservation, they will protect themselves from acts of aggression. Those acts of aggression may be in the form of a military attack, a suicide bomber, or political wimps who do not have the courage to stand and fight for Israel's right to exist. It's boundries were not determined by a group of polititions some years ago but by God Himself. Stand strong Bibi.

RAMAT SHLOMO - HAR HOMA - DEJA VU WHEN THE GOVERNMENT DECIDED TO BUILD HAR HOMA ON THE FRINGE OF E. JERUSALEM IN 1997 UNDER NETANYAHU'S FIRST TERM AS PM - THE PALESTINIANS ALSO HIT THE ROOF AND ACCUSED US OF "JUDAIZING JERUSALEM" SAEB ERIKAT MOUTHED THE SAME EMPTY TRASH ABOUT ISRAEL DESTROYING TRUST BLAH BLAH BLAH. WE BUILT HAR HOMA OF COURSE. MY COUSIN YORAM LIVES THERE HAPPILY WITH HIS FAMILY NOW. WE WILL ALSO BUILD RAMAT SHLOMO GOD WILLING. "JUDAIZING JERUSALEM" HAS ABOUT THE SAME REALITY IN FACT AS SALTIFYING THE DEAD SEA. BEEN THERE. DONE THAT.

To 6 | Terry - Eilat, Israel: The left isn't the problem here. It's Bibi's rogue coalition members who flaunt their autonomy. If Kadima isn't brought into the coalition the beans may eventually spill. After avoiding Bibi's attempts at poaching Kadima MKs Livni seems to on the offensive. Where will this end? The only way to clamp down on the PA bait and switch act is to rodeo the US Pals and squeeze Abbas from the US and regional neighbors. First, though we must catch the little foxes, for our vines have tender grapes.
14  |  aspacia- Sin City, Wednesday Mar 10, 2010
There will never be peace when neither Hamas, Fatah, Hizbollah, et. al. real end game is the the destruction of Israel. Israelis purchased the land fair and square. They, an internationally recognized state, were attacked, and legally won the land; it is now Israels. Pay compensation to every anti-Jew/Israeli, and spirit them to the land of their choosing, and a country that will accept them. Those left should be driven out to their brethren. Hard nosed attitude; it sure is, but I doubt there is any other choice.
15  |  Wladek, Wednesday Mar 10, 2010
This is a case of "Biden" the hand that feeds you. This is another of PM Netanyahu's deliberate attempts to dress down and embarass a high-level foreign dignitary. A few weeks aga, the Israelis deliberately embarassed the ambassador from Tuirkey, now this insult to the US Vice Pres. What is Netanyahu trying to convey to the civilized world? Death squads in the WB and Dubai, more "Jews Only" jim Ctow housing in E. J'llem and the constant war-mongering concerning Iran are not ways to win friends and influence people in a positive manner. Bibi and Lieberman are either idiots or complete A-holes.
16  |  gabby Jerusalem, Wednesday Mar 10, 2010
I'm not sure. Bibi may believe that the appearance of warm relations with the US will harm Israel at this point. The US seems to think that a demnstration of warmth will help get the negotiations moving -- hat's why they sent Biden. But the US administration is not necessarily pursuing Israel's good in these negotiations. Bibi may need a means to get the others to drop out of negotiations while he is still in favor of them -- on our terms. Insulting Biden might be a very practical means to accomplish that, even if it means that Bibi has to tarnish himself a bit in the process. Hard to say.
17  |  Ana, Wednesday Mar 10, 2010
Not one country in the world, apart from Israel, considers East Jerusalem as an Israeli city. All countries in the world, including the USA - even under the Bush administration - considers East Jerusalem to be Palestinian and the capital of a future palestinina state. This is reality. Denying it as Bibi's coalition does means Israel will have to severe any ties it may have with foreign countries, and live in complete isolation in a permanent state of non-peace. Seems like a heavy price to pay.
18  |  Alan, Wednesday Mar 10, 2010
Biden should say one more word and drop dead. Honestly I am sick to death of Jews falling all over themselves to apologize to those who are our enemies. Biden's record on Israel is a lie, the shouting match with Begin back in June 1982 proved that. Furthermore he is the same reptile who gave the murderers of Neda Soltan and of American GI's in Iraq a pass, threatened a REAL President, Bush with impeachment if he "took" the Iranian nukes - and he and his buddy are doing NOTHING to stop Iran. As for Obie don't get me started. Unless he deals firmly with Iran, just throw the damn bastard out.
19  |  Alan, Wednesday Mar 10, 2010
For bozo at 9, correcto mundo, Dem kool-aid drinker. Biden has NEVER been a friend of Israel. A panderer yes, when he needs our vote. Geopolitically he's the worst disaster ever, unless you bring up his little buddy who sat in the pew. Both of them are COWARDS. He went to Israel NOT to express solidarity or offer concrete solutions to Iran but to bluntly tell the Israelis not to strike, to allow Iran to build their WMDs. This is part and parcel of his career, as well as that of almost ALL Democrats, Kerry, Clinton, Pelosi, Reid are no better, and don't get me started on lil' boy Barry.
20  |  Sally - U.S.A., Wednesday Mar 10, 2010
Chris, I read your #25 to me, thank you. I'm intrigued as to what is suppose to fill the vacuum since the options seem limited. (or do you want to leave it vacant?)
21  |  steve, Wednesday Mar 10, 2010
The Israeli government should for once establish what it believes. Is East Jerusalem part of Israel or is it occupied territory to be traded. If it is part of Israel then build and Judaize. If not, then do what Biden says. American support for Israel is based on mutual interest. If the American administration decides its friendship with Israel hurts its interests, it will abandon Israel no matter what concessions Israel offers. So stop worrying about making Mr. Biden unhappy.
22  |  Jonah in Jamaica, Wednesday Mar 10, 2010
Terry & Alan #18-19 almost entirely have it right. Today's Debkafile suggests that the announcement to build 1600 units was timed in response to the Obama message that Israel has no right to strike at Iran ( to prevent a nuclear holocaust ) witthout US pre-approval. If that is accurate then Bibi should be congratulated.
23  |  Fred, Wednesday Mar 10, 2010
Rosner, what did Biden mean when he said in Ramallah this morning "The US is commited to a Palestinian State that is independent, viable and CONTIGUOUS"? This is the first time I have heard any American leader call for this. The only make Palestine contiguous is to cut Israel in half, or to eliminate Israel all together. Is that what the US VP is suggesting? To my mind, Hamas stockpiling missiles, Iran building nukes, and PA denying any Jewish ties to the land are bigger threats to peace than 1600 condo units in East Jerusalem. Well, maybe BHO is living up to his middle name.
24  |  Al, Australia/ Israel, Wednesday Mar 10, 2010
There will be Peace, but only when the Messiah stands on the Temple Mount, and from that day forth, Every Knee will bow!! And Islam will be forever banished to Hell, along with its "Allah" or the one we better know as Satan. Israel belongs to the Jewish people and No-One else. The deceivers and liars from the Arab, Persian and "Palestinian" world have no rights to G-d's Land He gave to His Chosen. That is a pure and simple fact!! Islam is Evil, the Quran is Evil, Muhammad was Evil!! Note the words of One Set Free in "Son of Hamas"!!!
25  |  Akiva, Wednesday Mar 10, 2010
#17 It doesn't matter whether it's recognised. The united city of Jerusalem is the capital of Israel according to Israeli law, enshrined in the seat of government which rests there. The status of Jerusalem is simply not up for debate, it is our capital and we demand the right to build and live in every part of it. If you don't like that, or hope in some way for change, tough. If Jerusalem is the price of peace, then to hell with peace.
26  |  justayid, Wednesday Mar 10, 2010
The guy making trouble for bibi is Yishai. Bibi is too smart to have wanted this. Whatever you think the final line should be (and I for one think that this development is on land that will remain Israeli) the fact is, given all the things US for policy is trying to do now, esp on Iran, this is a terrible message. The USA is not Israel's enemy, it is Israels only real ally (no, I don't think it wise to count on Hashem wrt to political strategy, nor is it particularly Zionist to do so).
27  |  justayid, Wednesday Mar 10, 2010
If Yishai can't organize the Interior Ministry to avoid things like this, Bibi should give the ministry to someone who can. Shas is not even a Zionist party, it denies the legitimacy of the Zionist movement. Its a corrupt party that exists to extract goodies from the State, and it supports child support payments that end up subsidizing the Arab birth rate. Anyone who thinks Yishai is a hero for Israeli interests is seriously deluded.
28  |  Yacov Yosifovitch NYC :Testing Testing: Lights,Camera,Action, Wednesday Mar 10, 2010
Anouncing During Biden's visit that E. JERU will be built-upon, is a genius of a strategy. At 1st blush, if Ye think about it, it was putting World to a Psychologi "TEST"123. like a Tsunami arising from a previous Earthquake, WE NOW KNOW; or can FEEL, and almost see, why The World Watch's US; but can't see Islamic Conspiracys? Today Prez. AhMAD-MAN-ofjiahd said (U.S. & CO.,) "They supported/created Muhajeen/Talabani-Terrorists & fighting those Terrorists today;" Iran forgot to say that America helped Iran get a NUCLEAR Plant built During/After Prez TRUMAN. And Now Iran wants to Use against US?
29  |  Terry - Eilat, Israel, Wednesday Mar 10, 2010
#22 Jonah In Jamaica. Hi Jonah. I just read the DebkaFile article, thanks for mentioning it. The Obama administration is in melt-down, failing on every front. They are flailing around like someone drowning in water way over their head. And, they are not to be trusted, they are just a bunch of liars & hypocrites. Nothing they say has any credibility. I just hope Netanyahu has the political will to launch a military strike on Iran, without American approval or cooperation. Obama will soon be a lame duck, the Democrats will lose control of Congress - he can be ignored totally very soon.
30  |  Dr. Dan USA, Wednesday Mar 10, 2010
If Israelis vote to divide Jerusalem and put the city again under risk of sniper rifle attack from across the border--- how can I in diaspora protest? But last I heard wasn't the Israeli public opinion 93/7 against dividing jerusalem? With Obabam and Biden statements criticizing Israel and pushing for division of Jerusalem they set Israel up to "open the gap" between Israel and the US. Either that or Obama and Biden are the best liars we have had and are intent on fooling the Muslim world. Olmert should face treason for offering to divide Jerusalem- unless that was part of deception too.
31  |  Dr. Dan USA, Wednesday Mar 10, 2010
Ask Biden how he thinks the aspirations of the Palestinians for Jerusalem as the capital of a Palestinian state can be met.
32  |  David, Wednesday Mar 10, 2010
Given the fact that most of the ultra right settlersÂ’ along with Mr. Terry from Eilat, as well as Ms. Caroline Glick who writes for this paper, it is quite apparent Israel must start instituting psychological and psychiatric tests to those damaged and scratched US Jews before granting them immigration permits. It is puzzling as to where and how those characters got imbedded with such irrational hate and rage but those are not the type of attributes we need here.
33  |  Tom Hall USA, Wednesday Mar 10, 2010
Pardon my intrusion here. I am an American. I do not understand why Israel, which is surrounded by so much Arab land should be required to give up another inch? If the Palestenians (Arab) want a state why can't Syria or Egypt or Jordon or one of the many other Arab counties in that region give them some of their massive holdings (compared to Isreal). Why does Israel always have to compromise? Land has changed hands for millinia, who has what right? It is Israel's now, rule it kindly, rule it wisely but rule it! Just an outside observation.
34  |  Shlomo, Israel, Wednesday Mar 10, 2010
For those who think Yishai should be controlling the planning boards, do you believe Ne'eman should be controlling the Courts in order to prevent court rulings that are inconvienient? There is a planning process, it has its own deadlines, some made up months in advance, and it is run independent of the minister. You can dump on Bibi and you can dump on Yishai, but the decision to enlarge Ramat Shlomo is a process of a couple years and includes transportation infrastructure, including a road that will allow high density apratments to be built for Arabs in Beit Hanina. Rosner do your homewor

The announcement of new houses being built and bidens visit are just a coinkydink Why are you making such a big deal about it?
37  |  David Schwarz - USA, Wednesday Mar 10, 2010
I'm almost beginning to believe that the Obama administration is purposely buying time for the Iranians to become a nuclear (bomb) power. He threats sanctions, backs down, pressures Israel to do nothing, threats sactions again, backs down, sends delegation after delegation to put more pressure on Israel to do nothing. A pattern beneficial to the enemies of Israel and the West.
38  |  Gábor Fränkl re: Terry, Wednesday Mar 10, 2010
Terry, I almost always agree with you. This time too! BUT! I think you are a bit careless now! What do I think of? Obama and his admin CAN and probably wil hinder/damage Israel at the UNSC whenever it wants Terry! You ignore this tool in their hand. They can screw IL whenever they want and IL cannot do a damn thing against this prospect! What's your rational response to THAT scenarion if they come together with the other 4 UNSC members? Have you spared a thought for this? Please respond! (BTW I am on your side but have MY questions!)
39  |  Caleb USA, Wednesday Mar 10, 2010
The grave error here was one of timing, not substance. Yishai's announcement during Biden's visit insulted and humiliated the Vice-President (who has been one of Israel's strongest supporters in Washington throughout his political career). The sad result is that Israel's standing with the U.S. Administration, press, and public has been harmed. If Netanyahu was blindsided, Yishai should be removed immediately from his cabinet position. If Netanyahu intended this, he is not fit to serve as Prime Minister.
40  |  Simon UK, Wednesday Mar 10, 2010
@ 17. A perfectly acceptable price to pay. Its called JUSTICE. The "west" doesnt seem to grasp this. More fool the "west"
41  |  Stanley USA, Wednesday Mar 10, 2010
Bad stuff, the timing of the announcement makes Bibi look either inept or a bald-faced liar. Most Americans will take this as a slap in the face from a presumed ally. Joe Biden is liked here despite his tendency to talk himself up a tree. The man is America's Vice President after all and this ploy to thoroughly embarass him was uncalled for. You know, people remember the last bad deed and not the ten good deeds the preceded it.
42  |  Judy Grayson USA, Wednesday Mar 10, 2010
good for bibi. keep going. biden is full of it. his foul and odious lies are a mark of his character and real insight into just how anti-semitic he really is. he's got the right job as supplicant to that other israel hater, barry from chicago.
43  |  Sally - U.S.A., Wednesday Mar 10, 2010
Terry, Jonah, Alan, I also read that Gates made an overnight emergency visit to the Saudis. Apparently, they are not too pleased with the US's actions on Iran.
44  |  Norwegian, Wednesday Mar 10, 2010
And so the echo-chamber continues, where principles trump reality. In he last 6 months, Israel has insulted the EU, Norway, Turkey, Dubai and now the VP of the United States of America. Openly, and intentionaly. You are becoming Rhodesia in international relations. Your leaders lie openly, brazenly, and act like used-car salesmen when caught. Israel is endangering itself in a religious craze, a blood-and-soil theology I thought we had left behind.
45  |  Al in the U.S., Wednesday Mar 10, 2010
The saddest part of the attitudes that I see expressed in many of these posts is this: Jews have been oppressed for so many centuries, and now they are becoming that which they have long decried: the oppressor. You are transforming into that which you have abhorred for so long. Think about it. And those of you who talk about Isreal keeping Jerusalem because it deserves to do so are loose canons, ignorant and ignorant of history. Jerusalem is also important to Christians and Muslims, and this attitude that "we captured it and we therefore deserve to keep it" is sheer selfishness/ignorance.
46  |  John R, Wednesday Mar 10, 2010
Netanyahu and his religious right will eventually push the worlds patience so far they will stop Israel's settlement policy with a severe economic embargo. It will last at least until Israel removes all settlements constructed since the Roadmap accord was signed. Only then will Israel attempt a genuine peace because they can no longer seize what they want and surround that with a fence.
47  |  Alan, Wednesday Mar 10, 2010
Caleb, Your last name wouldn't be Trainer, would it? Sorry, but Biden's real record is NOT as pro-Israel as you think. He is a classic panderer, a fair-weather friend who's only out there when votes are needed. The reality is he has engaged in shouting matches with the late Begin, threatened sanctions, and really, when it comes to Iran both he and Obama gave the rapists, terrorist thugs, and murderers of the Revolutionary Guard a pass last year when they were both Senators. He did NOT go to Israel to offer concrete support but to pressure and tell Israelis they must accept Iranian WMDs.
48  |  Keith poulter, Wednesday Mar 10, 2010
Biden says Palestinian state must be "contiguous." Given the geographical separation of Gaza and the West Bank, either Palestine or Israel must not be contiguous. Israel has suggested a road or tunnel linking Gaza and the West Bank, under Palestinian control. A similar arrangement could be made linking Palestinian territory in Judea and Samaria. "Contiguity" is (a) not possible, and (2) should not become a stumbling block in negotiations.
49  |  Terry - Eilat, Israel, Wednesday Mar 10, 2010
#38 Gabor Frankl. You are right to mention this ''tool'' in the hands of an hostile American president. However, there are limits to what even a president can do, there are political costs for going to far, especially if his party no longer controls Congress, as I expect will happen. Today's Rasmussen poll gives Obama a (-22) approval rating. Other polls show overwhelming support for Israel among Americans generally. So, Obama can be annoying but we can easily withstand the pressure. To tell you the truth, I'm more concerned over Fox News having a Saudi Arabian stockholder than Obama.
50  |  Tom Hall USA, Wednesday Mar 10, 2010
Someoone has to be in charge. To deny that others want it for their own selfish/ignorant reasons is true niativity/ignorance. What is the Palestinian claim? It was theirs when? Should be theirs why? All I am saying is why should the Palestinians be aloud to continually squeeze and as part of a larger race in that region be allowed to have even more? Israel has it, let them govern it, let them coexist, but let them exist. To #35 I am afraid that is very much America. It is calld NEW Mexico & etc.. Countless enclaves of ethnic diversity that have govt reps. but... Still sovergn AMERICA..

53  |  Terry - Eilat, Israel, Wednesday Mar 10, 2010
#43 Sally USA. The Saudis will play both sides. They fear Iran & worry about American inaction but if nothing is done soon, they will gradually move into the Iranian orbit. If anything could force American military action (& this is a very very slim chance), it will be Saudi pressure. The Saudi lobby has far more influence than the Jewish lobby.
54  |  Sally - U.S.A., Wednesday Mar 10, 2010
#53 Terry, of course. But, I don't think it was just Netanyahu giving Biden the middle finger; I think it was also meant as a distraction.
