Rosner's Domain: 10 short political notesPosted by SHMUEL ROSNER
Comments: 19 Follow Rosner's Domain on Twitter! / Join me on Facebook! Ten short political notes: 1.Did she just say "horrible", "awful", "terrible" about the Obama administration? Or maybe not? I think she really did, and Minister Livnat was smart enough to "clarify" rather than "deny" the reports quoting her comments (she says now that what she really meant is "strict"). So - here's a nagging thought: Will such impolite, insulting, undiplomatic, fullish remarks make Livnat a viable candidate to be Israel's next Foreign Minister? 2. And sad truth must be told: many Israelis, maybe even most of them, will find her remarks unwise, but not incorrect (just to make sure: I'm not endorsing such belief, just describing the troubling reality). 3. "Attorney General Menachem Mazuz told the security cabinet Wednesday ahead of a vote on the decision that there is no real way to enforce the freeze due to a lack of manpower". My American friends tell me: implementation is the key, and the US intends to be much more thorough when it comes to validating that it is "freeze" and not "free". 4. Palestinians can say whatever they want, but the "freeze" is something they "got" without the need to "give" much. 5. Want proof? Shimon Shiffer is the veteran Diplomatic correspondent for Israel's largest daily, Yediot. Here's what he wrote: For years, Netanyahu used to boast of a formula premised on the notion of "if they give something, they'll get something in return; if they don't give a thing, they wont get a thing." Now, in his second term in office, Netanyahu keeps on giving, without getting proper compensation. 6. For the grimly-serious reader: two articles on how "we" (whatever that means) lost Turkey. Danforth here, Crooke here. 7. Some loyal readers were very unhappy with the my concomments concerning Obama's approval ratings among independents. A couple of them suggested that I take a look at Gallup (I did, as you can probably imagine). I suggest all doubters read the estimable Charles Franklin: So the point is simple: Claims of abandonment of Obama by independents (or lib-Dems or con-Dems) are substantially exaggerated over the past three months. Significant decline from May through August, yes indeed among Inds and Reps, but that trend halted in August. And since I'm fair and balanced, here's a link to Rasmussen and Schoen (but I must say, Franklin's analysis seems more convincing): Unless Mr. Obama changes his approach and starts governing in a more fiscally conservative, bipartisan manner, the independents that provided his margin of victory in 2008 and gave the Democrats control of Congress will likely swing back to the Republicans, putting Democratic control of Congress in real jeopardy. 8. My friend Yossi has this strange theory: Some even speculate that Netanyahu, like Sharon, is planning a far-reaching political move that will enable him, buoyed by wide public support, to break Likud up once again on the eve on the next elections and establish the new Likud with his partner Ehud Barak. The latter, at least, would be glad to leave his ailing party with its huge debts behind and join Bibi for another political upheaval - as Sharon and Peres did in forming Kadima. 9. In Abbas land, there's no change: The Palestinian president has said that he plans to stay in office until the next election and will be ready to hold the vote as soon as consensus is reached with rival faction Hamas. Namely - forever? 10. And here's one more question to think about over the weekend: Could Scotland be the next Slovakia?

What you are neglecting is the fact that Gallup polls "registered voters", while Rasmussen polls "likely voters". Rasmussen has a far better record for accuracy than does Gallup.

Those predicting and hoping for the end of Obama are living in a fantasy world. The U.S. will end its war with Iraq under Obama (a war we should never have gotten into) our economy was saved from a depression by Obama, and for the first time America will have near universal health care for all its citizens. It's sad that Israelis hate Obama but I don't remember him cutting off your aid, & the American veto in the U.N. for you still continues, & you are the only country in the world about to receive the F35, the worlds most advanced fighter jet, but you babies cry about a settlement freeze!

"And sad truth must be told: many Israelis, maybe even most of them, will find her remarks unwise, but not incorrect".
With Caroline Glick calling the policies of the president "anti-semitic", do you wonder why this is so? Jerusalem Post is the main culprit in whipping up Israeli paranoia.

Re 1: Might be hard for those with initial prejudices to believe, but many voters supported Lieberman/Yvet for their ideas and no nonsense language, not for useless name-calling.
Re 4,5: Agreed. Worst thing is that his language gave credit to the idea that stopping Jews from building homes will somehow make our neighbors like us/choose peace. It isn't true and is counterproductive (and it's a reason why family supported Lieberman, who questioned this link)
Re 7: I'd disagree. Obama / dems are losing support because they're compromising too much. See Lakoff's "Don't Think of an Elephant"

Livnat has more guts and brains, not to mention she's a looker compared to that incredible spy - NOT bimbo Tzippy -than all of Netanyahu's pathetic government put together.
Imagine, if Bibi can cave in for a coward, a liar, an anti-semite, and a dreck now hated by most Americans, what will he do if another Bush or Reagan tells him to do the same? Because Americans disdain cowards who capitulate to other cowards. Especially if that kind of coward is also a bully.

There is no way to "show" that Obama kept the economy from a depression anymore than it is possible to "show" jobs "saved." Both are unverifiable data. The next presidenial election is still 3 years away & it depends on how the economy is doing a couple of years from now. Usually when a recession is at the beginning of a presidency, the matter is resolved by the presidential election & the incumbent is usually re-elected. With Carter, the economy was in bad shape when he came into office, but it was still in poor shape prior to the election & he had the Iranian crisis coupled with that.

Probably in order not to add to the debt so much at one time, Obama stagnated the release of the pork from the stimulas package. Only 15% of the approx. 1 trillion dollars of the stimulas package is for jobs. The rest is just pork & is not scheduled to be released until approx. 2011. That is why he is talking about another stimulas package because 85% of the first stimulas package is a waste.

It is my understanding that Mary Landreau of Louisiana openly bragged about the 300 million given to her state to get her vote to move the Health Care bill forward for debate in the Senate.

You have no idea of Israel. None whatsoever. The Jerusalem Post is this piddly little English -language paper that is read by about 3% of Israel. As such it is not at all indicative of Israeli public opinion. People in Finland read the JP, but they won't find the Israeli opinion here. Think about a newspaper in English in Spain or Germany of China or Finland. How many locals really would read it? How indicative would it be of the culture and the thinking in the country?

#9 Shel Zahav. I tend to agree with your comment. Actually, the JPost is not even vaguely right-wing (whatever that means) but is actually left-of-centre. It may seem right-wing only by comparison to our other English-language newspapers which are way off in left field, Haaretz being now in the looney-left catagory & representing an insignificant proportion of Israeli opinion. In any case, Israeli public opinion from what I can observe, is far to the right of any of our media & actually far to the right of our current gov't's public policies.

I read the two references re: Turkey - both incredibly lame. I had to laugh at one phrase in the piece by Crooke when he said, ...Islamic Renaissance....'' now, that's a pretty bizaare choice of words for regressing to the 7th century. I suppose he also thinks Iran has undergone a ''Renaissance'' - the same could be said of Gaza. All the dhimmwits saw no threat in ''moderate'' Erdogan & his fascist Islamic Party, these people don't have a clue about the Middle-East or Islam. Instead, they were worried about the Turkish military having too much influence, what morons.

Poor, misguided leftist. So important is your messiah, that you have to spout the party dogma and cannot contemplate that he is destroying your country under your feet. He has appointed Marxists (Dunn, Jones, etc.) to high positions and a tax cheat to the Secretary of Treasury.Still, like good little sheep, you support the corruption. Obama will go the way of Carter - an ultra-leftist slaughtered at the polls and spending the rest of his life making a fool of himself.
16 | Boris, Jerusalem, Monday Nov 30, 2009
13 - Who cares about Obama, win or lose? We in Israel shouldn't tell Americans what to do, otherwise we'll be looking as dumb as the British "Guardian" before 2004 elections. On the other hand, we don't have to pay unrequited and undeserved compliments to American President whose assistants are calling our PM "the greatest obstacle to peace". We live in Israel, not in America, and don't need to worry about invitation to White House Hanukka diner.

Shmuel,
It seems that nobody in the US paid any attention to what Livnat says. Maybe Bibi was spared a political and PR crisis thanks to Thanksgiving.
