As US President Barack Obama makes historic overtures in attempting to foster open dialogue with Iran, the rest of world watches in optimistic anticipation. The UK's Guardian recently reported that Obama's administration drafted a letter to Iran "aimed at unfreezing US-Iranian relations and opening the way for face-to-face talks."

Iran's president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has welcomed US overtures saying that:

The new US administration announced that it's willing to bring about a number of changes and is now taking the course for dialogue. It's quite clear that the real change should be fundamental, not just tactical change, and it is quite clear that the Iranian nation will greet real changes." (CNN, February 10)

Change or no change, residents of southern and northern Israel have reason to be wary of Iran, a country that continues to fund Hamas and Hizbullah terrorism operations.

Thanks to Iranian-produced Grad missiles and technology, Hamas now holds rockets that place close to 1 million Israelis within target range. During Operation Cast Lead, Hamas was able to strike Israel's fifth and sixth largest cities, Ashdod and Beersheba respectively, along with Netivot, Ofakim, Qiryat Gat, Yavneh, and Kiryat Malachi.

Hamas now has aspirations to target other Israeli cities, particularly Tel Aviv. Hamas's Al-Aqsa TV recently proclaimed on a program: "Tel Aviv, all our options are open." (Al Aqsa TV, January 10, 2009)

But it is not only the rockets which are worrying.

Although the Obama administration is keen on turning a new leaf with Iran, the fact remains that Iran is the "central banker" for Middle East terrorism, as former US Secretary of State, Condoleeza Rice aptly put when she spoke to the Senate Appropriations Committee on Iran's role in supporting Islamic terror in 2006.

The Iranian nation is a leading financial supporter of three terror networks; Hamas, Palestinian Islamic Jihad and Hizbullah. Iran transfers several hundreds of million of dollars a year to Hamas, financing the movement and its military wing, Iz Al-Din-al Qassam Brigades. When Hamas took over the Gaza Strip in 2006, Iran awarded the regime with a $50 million bonus (BBC report April 16, 2006).

The Hamas website reported on December 11, 2006 that the Iranians had given $250 million to top Hamas official and fundraiser, Ismail Haniya, of which $100 million was used to cover the salaries of Hamas employees in the social, labor and cultural ministries for a six-month period in 2007. (Intelligence and Terrorism Information Center report )

According to the IICC, Iran regards Hizbullah and Hamas as two important sources of power which Iran uses to promote its strategic goals, that of regional hegemony.

Using Hizbullah, Hamas and other Palestinian terrorist organizations, the Iranian-Syrian axis can increase its influence in the Arab and Muslim world, pose a serious challenge to Mahmoud Abbas, harm the negotiations between Israel and the Palestinian Authority and export the Iranian brand of radical Islam to other Sunni countries, especially Egypt. From the Iranian point of view, its sponsorship of Hamas is considered as a means of establishing an Iranian foothold in the heart of the Sunni world." [my emphasis]

Iranians themselves fully identify with Hamas's goals to destroy Israel, as most recently indicated when more than 70,000 Iranian student volunteers registered to carry out suicide bombings against Israel to support Hamas during Operation Cast Lead in Gaza. (AP January 5) The rush of volunteers transpired when Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei delivered a religious decree stating that anyone who carried out an attack against Israel would be considered a martyr.

Iranian schools, like Hamas, contain children's textbooks which teach Iranian schoolchildren to hate and fear Israel. IMPACT recently published a short volume on The War Curriculum in Iran, which exposes the way in which Iranian textbooks connect the Islamic Revolution in Iran to the struggle for the liberation of Palestine.

Children as young as eight years of age learn in Iranian history textbooks that

God willing, the day will come when all Muslims will be united, liberate Palestine and save Jerusalem from the hands of the enemies of Islam."

Social Studies, Grade 3 (2004) p. 56 From The War Curriculum in Iranian Schoolbooks p.162

And finally, Iran's perception of the West is just as hostile. Iranian school books equal the United States with "the Great Satan." Westernization receives a special label in Persian, known as Gharbzadegi, which literally means being smitten with the West in a way that corrupts the soul. "Westernization is treated as an ominous danger targeting Islamic identity." (The War Curriculum in Iranian Schoolbooks p.162)

Is it any wonder that Iran and most of its population of 74 million residents determinedly supports the Hamas regim? After all the Iranian national education system and religious institutions for the past thirty years has indoctrinated a hate education against Israel and the West.

The question is -- what will President Obama be willing to believe of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad should he engage in direct talks, as Iranian financial aid and rockets continue to strengthen Hamas and Hizbullah. And will Israel be pressured to talk to Hamas in the same fashion?

The creation of Israel was the definitive sign that Nazism in both Europe and the Mid East was finally defeated in WW2 by the Allied Forces.Once embarked upon, it would be difficult for the US to do a U turn on a path leading to ever closer engagement with Iran. Therefore, it is essential that from the start, Iran must understand that the US was a major force in the war against Hitler and his genocidal policies & that the US will not betray the memory of its war dead by forming a relationship with Iran until the time Iran recognizes its ally, Israel, & ends its support of terror against Israel.

It is only a matter of time until World War III -- Iran and Islamofascists of all types, against everyone else! Now, all with any vision can see the 1930's repeated in present times -- both economically and politically, with a US president that will ignore the plight of Jews, just as FDR did! May G-d help us all in these times!

Anav Silverman: Israel gets financial, military and moral support from Jewish organisations throughout the world and from the government in Washington. Why do you deny the Palestinians the right to receive support? The schooling of the youth in Iran is a least open for all to see but Israel and its allies do the same but, in a more subtle way through propaganda means and constant bombardment of the minds of the young. Finally, if any country were bombarded with foreign culture, traditions and religious beliefs what should the government reaction be?

The sad truth is that my country has elected a president, while not an anti-semitist, can be ignorant at times of the intentions of those close to him. Many in the United States who did vote for Obama are not fully aware of the contributions of the Jews, ignorant of the 1930's, and all too willing to follow their bellies and thier Id instead of their conscience. It is not fair to call Obama an enemy of Israel, but It is also foolish to call him a friend either. If Obama does to Israel what Carter did to Taiwan, It will be a sad day for America indeed.

when nazies came to power everybody knew that the West is their finite target, but not the first one!US with their democratic president awaited for 3 years before the process of defendance of freedom began.Israel must defend itself!

Israel will take out the Iran reactor before it goes live - no matter what Obama says - without US support - and then Israel will actually be healthier for having less active support from the USA - Israel must understand that the USA needs it, more than it needs the USA. because a powerful Iran on par with Russia - would threaten US oil from Saudi Arabia - all this public politics is a ruse - the real story is keeping Iran weak - a vital US interest - evidently US officials think they can take influence of Gaza and push Iran out - HA! - it would be funny if it werent so serious...

Here is the head of the dragon and the font of state sponsored anti-semitism. A CFR Daily Analysis on the recent launch of a satellite describes the development of ICMBs as a secondary threat. Short and medium range missles could easily be developed in vast quantities with in a very short time frame, potentially threatening Israel and forcing the world to choose between oil security and Israel. It is necessary for Israel to make peace and stabilize the region so adequate countermeasures can be established to existing and emerging threat levels. Iranian regime change is vital for Israel.

As an American, I loved my country...despite it's shortfalls. America must support Israel. I am not sure if most Americans realize the loyality that the Israeli people hold towards America. During a trip to Italy about 4 years ago, we met a young female Israeli student working as a waitress. She proceeded to tell us how here apartment is frequently damaged by anti-Americans. She said that despite this, she continues to verbally support America and its principles. This young girl from New Tel Aviv was willing to risk her neck for America. Listening to her was very humbling.

To 7. Jay: Once the Russian RADAR system is complete the window of opportunity will have closed. The satelite launch implies that Russia has seeded Iran with a portion of its space technology and it is likely that Iran has already upgraded its existing short and medium range guidence systems prior to the launch. If the satelite video contains encrypted information then it hypothetically is transmitting data on fixed installations such as oil wells. Iran's capability to make short/medium missiles means big trouble for all nations and about 5' drift on target impact. We should all worry...

Tom - Australia: Bollocks! I have every sympathy with the residents of Sderot, but don't you think you are aiming your wrath in the wrong direction? Is was the Israeli government that refused Goldstone access to Sderot (or any other part of Israel for that matter), the West Bank and Gaza. (Egypt gave access to Gaza.) It was the Israeli government that refused to participate in discovering the truth surrounding and leading up to the events of the 2008/2009 Gaza incursion. While we may agree that what Sderiot has had to put up with is unacceptable, it is a bit late to call the Goldstone enquiry incomplete.
Hong Kong: Judge Goldstone, you made your choice when you agreed to take on this nefarious assignment. As a Jew, and a supposed 'Zionist', you should have, in the interests of objectivity, declined this assignment. You knew you would have to be extra 'heavy-handed' on Israel, so as to fulfill a particularly personal need to appear 'objective' in the eyes of our enemies and the rest of the world. So you chose to 'sell out' the Jewish Nation instead. No Sir, you will go down in Jewish History as one who preferred to betray his own people for a little praise from our enemies. I pity you.
DevorahR: Goldstone and company should hold the hearings in Sderot. It would enhance their point of view.
