A message to Ahmedinejad Posted by Rabbi Michael Marmur
Comments: 31
Dear President Ahmedinejad, You don't know me, and the chances of us meeting are not great. I live in Jerusalem, a Jewish citizen of the State of Israel. I was born in Britain, which I understand figures pretty high on your list of Satanic nations. I am also a Reform rabbi, an exponent of a religious philosophy which espouses moderation and modernization. So it's fair to say that you and I mix in different circles, or perhaps that should be centrifuges. Mahmoud (you can call me Michael if you choose to reply), I get the feeling we need to talk. Apart from the unpromising start (British-born Zionist liberal Jew Beelzebub), you ought to know that there are many things against the State of Israel you could say which I would agree with. In our regime here such opposition is allowed, indeed it's even encouraged. I am profoundly concerned about the way in which we distribute our resources here, and I fear that our approach to the Palestinian people has been tragically in error. I also think it's time to wrest authority from the hands of religious politicians who have done a disservice both to politics and to religion. (Come to think of it, we may not have so much in common on that last point.) We've just had a big day here in Israel and around the Jewish world (I think you call it the international industrial-financial insidious cabal). I am sure you have received satellite imagery of sudden and intensive cycling and skateboard activity, and before you misinterpret this as a military maneuver or sinister escalation, I ought to explain. In some ways, you would have approved of the scene - millions of Jews reflecting on what they have done wrong and resolving to do better. I'm sure you would have been happy to offer many suggestions in this regard. It was quite a scene here - religious and secular (I'll explain that another time) spending a day removed from their workaday lives trying to think through the meaning of life and the nature of their relations with others. Some exploited the almost complete absence of cars on the road to set loose their children on self-propelled wheeled conveyances of every imaginable kind. I spent a good part of the day thinking about my personal pitfalls and shortcomings, and also about the challenges facing my people and my country. I won't bore you with the personal stuff - I guess much of it would sound familiar to many of your countrymen, since the human condition transcends political and ideological boundaries. On the wider social level, I have been increasingly alarmed about the increasing chauvinism and insensitivity on display here. I also pray fervently that we will have the courage to face up to those in our nation who combine messianic fervor with political fanaticism. We have a lot of work to do. Why am I telling you all this? If you read any of our newspapers (it's a shame there's no Persian language edition of the major titles, but I am sure you have assistants with good Ulpan Hebrew) you'll know that my views are shared by many in Israel. The point of all this, then, is not to leak you information you would not otherwise have received. Instead, I want you to know that by your utterances and actions you have made all the differences between moderates and extremists in my country dissolve into irrelevance. By choosing to repeat the old Big Lie, and by raising the specter of our annihilation, you may have done more for Jewish unity than anyone else I know. I love my country, and I often despair for its future. I am not always convinced that our policies and actions are in the finest tradition of our people. But when you tell me that I am part of an enormous conspiracy, and that my relatives didn't perish in the Holocaust but were instead relaxing on an extended ski trip in the Alps, and when you say all this as your nuclear potential mushrooms (it seemed an appropriate verb), you make it much harder for me to think and act as a liberal and as a moderate. It would be wrong to blame you for the collapse of the Israeli Left. It managed to self-destruct without any help from you. But you should be aware that many, many Israelis are ready to take significant steps to promote justice and allow for co-existence in this region. They are prepared to do this not because they share your assessment that Israel is a withered tree and a repressive regime (did you mean that as a compliment?), but rather out of a belief that the way ahead should be a way of peace and co-existence. Mr. President, you need to think again. Combining medieval blood libels with nuclear stockpiles spells Armageddon for all of us. I also want you to know that despite the temptation to ignore Israel's failings and rally against the threat you pose us, I will continue to make noise about our misdeeds and missed opportunities. If I thought you were really motivated by a pure sense of solidarity with your Palestinian brothers, I might respect you a little more. As it is, it seems to me that you are using us here in Israel and Palestine as a diversion from some pressing problems closer to home. It would be a great idea for you to take a good look at your own shortcomings from time to time. I'm sure you could come up with something if you really put your mind to it, an I believe there are millions in your country who would love a real opportunity to tell you how they feel on this subject. Please stop rattling all those swords, and remind yourself that there is a rich and noble history of strong relations between our peoples and our nations. We go back a long way, and we could build a strong partnership in the future. Co-operation could serve us all far better than proliferation. You should also know this: if you do come after us, we will not be intimidated. Concerned, certainly. Terrified, quite probably. But not intimidated. We have been working at this people-hood project for three millennia and we are just beginning to get the hang of it. The Jewish people have survived many attempts to blot us out from history, and we plan to survive this one too. Getting to know us makes more sense than planning to nuke us. And if that's too much to ask, ignoring us is also a perfectly valid option. If you really want to cause us difficulties, leave us alone for a while and see what a bad job we make of getting on with each other. Now that would be an unconventional weapon.

Rabbi Michael Marmur sounds like a very nice guy, but a naif. This sort of liberal crawling on knees to be liked... this only invites greater contempt.

Rabbi you seem to be an idealist who ignores that between you and Ahmadinejad there are bias too much different. Dialogue is impossible with a borderline personality.

I must agree with Robert.(#1) Why are you groveling to this madman? And even more tragic is that you obviously feel you have more in common with him than with "religious right wing settlers", as you would call them. (I just call them Zionists) But I do have one question. When you say you "pray", to whom do you direct your prayers? The one God of Israel, who gave us his Torah and mitzvot, that you proudly reject? You think it's fine and dandy that Israeli kids were out on their skateboards yesterday? I call that a tragedy of great magnitude.

The Holocaust itself is proof God is true to His word. Deuteronomy 28 is a picture of the Holocaust as much as Psalm 22 is proof that Jesus was sent by God, that God knows what is ahead even 1000 years before the fact and He causes it to be written, and that what God says will come true.

Excellent letter. Indeed, Jews and Persians go back for millenia. Perhaps Ahmadinejad does not know that it was the Persian (Iranian) King Cyrus the Great who met the Jews "at naharoth bavel ", after their country had been wiped out by the Babylonians. Cyrus could have finished the job - instead sent them back to rebuild their land. NO doubt as missed oppoprtunity for Ahmad .

Denying the Holocaust is as ignorant of truth as Christians believing they are following Jesus when he said to live by EVERY word of God and they do not.
It is as ignorant as Jews believing they are God's people when they refuse to follow His word.
Denying the Holocaust is as ignorant as Islam believing that they are following Gods word to Muhammad to follow the Torah, Gospel and Prophets.
(Bible: Matthew 4:4; Deuteronomy 8:3; Leviticus 26; Qur'an, Ahmad #s: 5.68, 69; 42.14-16) It is time we stop our ignorant behavior and believe and embrace truth.

Intersting article by Rabbi Marmur. However, it will fall on deaf ears. This Ahmadinputz is a clone of Hitler and he will some day attack Israel. I just hope that Israel, ever alert, gives him and his nuke sites a "Grooser Zetz"! Dealing with the enemies of Israel is like trying to "pet" a crocodile! And as for Reform vs Orthodox...these debates about Torah are fine when the "POGROMCHIKS" are not after us for another Auschwitz...I can give you six million reasons!

Such a wonderful, warm sense of humor! And so rewarding!
Thank you very much. It helps - and makes feel much, much better.

The lefts craving for an illusory peace, their desire to appear even handed and to make sure they always criticize Israel before making any comments about the Arab or Muslim world, has strengthened the radicals. They perceived Israel as weak and divided. Arafat rejected Barak's offer because he believed he could always get a better deal in the future. The left isn't solely responsible for Hamas, Hezbollah, the Intifada or suicide bombers, but Rabbi Marmur and his liberal friends should do some soul searching. They have reduced the faint possibility of peace and their policies have caused death

The goal of militant Islam is to break the Israeli economy by having the most productive members of its workforce in its peak income earning years involved in babysitting and frog-catching jobs. Babysitting pays a job entry level wage & frog-catching doesn't pay a dime. The entire Israeli foreign ministry is involved in frog-catching. When wizards through their enchantments cast spells over the land their toadies will multiply and overrun the land. This causes the anti-Zionists' hearts to harden in rebellion. [Exodus 8:6-15] Either break the ayatollah's spell or surrender hard fought for gains

I do not understand why any Israeli, or any Jew, would like to address Amedinejad as "Dear President". In fact I do not even understand the desire to speak to this man at all. Perhaps I'm a far too old fashioned European, but in my "petit globe" there are standards of behaviour and of good taste to be upheld. One of these standards is that one should not put at stake one's personal and collective human dignity. Sometimes this requires the refusal to speak to a person, simply to avoid the impression of being found in his company.

This is a prime example of a decent man trying to reach out to evil. However evil does not respond likewise. Evil comes to kill, steal, and destroy. Iran is not Israel's friend and never will be. This is not the times of old but of survival. We here in the USA are watching Obama the appeaser do his so-called magic on Iran on Thursday. After selling Israel down the river at the UN in front of the entire world he now is getting a rude awakening on how the real world is. Obama's hushed deal with Russia on stopping the missile shield will result that the Russians are in bed with Iran, what a joke

Stop sucking up you liberal woos!! We owe the Iranian President nothing in terms of an explanation. Don't humble yourself to this animal. He only understands strength and power. We have to end his misery and go on with our lives.

If only Iran had taken Israel's route when developing its nuclear technology and not join the NPT, it wouldn't have to be worried about getting bombed to bits by self-serving, corrupt Western governments who have nothing better to do than placate Israel 24/7.

To Marie Devine. You said "Bible: Matthew 4:4; Deuteronomy 8:3; Leviticus 26; Qur'an, Ahmad #s: 5.68, 69; 42.14-16)" there is no chapter or verse with name Ahmad in the Quran. You should do more research next time before posting one of your lies :)

What would you have thought of a moderate Rabbi writing this type of drivel to Hitler, prior to the Holocaust? WAKE-UP, there is NOTHING "funny" about Ahmadinejad or his INTENTIONS towards Israel and the Jewish people and "humor", however misguided will not change him or the situation. Get SERIOUS or get off your keyboard.

to marie# 6 it is my understanding that we as christians are to do our best to live as jesus instructed us to,however due to the fact that none of us are perfect and from time to time make mistakes,OUR GOD allowed the life of his only son to be sacrificed,so that we who may strive but still fall short of perfection may be forgiven and allowed entry into heaven.

People how do ya criticize a man of of religion who`s only trying to get a message of peace through a maniac`s terroristic attempt to start a nuclear war,yes its most likely a futile attempt, that doesn`t mean the messenger should be ridiculed for trying, what would you have the rabbi say,or what if a-jad said okay i now will stop.then this rabbi is a hero, the responsibility for this mess lies not with a jewish rabbi,so even if it hurts a little try to show some respect for a man willing to give up much to try to help smucks like us.

SOUND IS GOOD & REASONABLE !
Every body point Ahmedinejad out as a Peace Broker in this world as nuclear weapons maker.
He is only part of Problem and All leaders of Israel,Palestinian and all Nations are also parts of problem and nuclear weapons makers.
If all Leaders and people of them wanted to free from nuclear weapons, all must remove this nuclear power from their land permantly first. Before we point others out , we have to ask ourselve in anyways.
If we clear , we could point out by force! If not so, why for we try ?
Ahmedinejad is only man-kind as like as we are.
Changes in all of us.

DARAGA BURMA...First ask Ahmedenejeb why he wants to destroy Israel...Israel CANNOT afford to be at the mercy of Islam's nuclear promise of destruction...you may sound like a "Nice Guy" in the
peaceful culture of Buddism...unfortunately the history of Islam is anything but peaceful...

Shalom Rabbi Michael Marmur.
I am not a Jew, but yet have great respect for the people of Israel, not becaue the Bible tells me so, but for a simple reason that I am Human. Yes we (mankind), have differences, but then again are we not children of GOD. I have come to know a few Iranian's, that I think I can call friends. We do disagree alot when it comes to The State of Israel. They know all to well that Israel is very strong.
My point being, let us try all approaches and keep all options on the desk. I support your message to Ahmedinejad. I do hope he would take the time to reply.

Marsha in the USA - I heartily agree with you about this being an intelligent newspaper and I am sure that you will now constrain yourself to intelligent comments. This learned Rabbi, who is the sound sane mountpiece for a great many of us for whom Israel is so important that we actually live here. Faces with an Orthodox Rabbinate who one can only summize that their function is to drive as many Israelis away from Religion as possible, here isRabbi, and having heard him speak he really is a great Rabbi - reaching out to the common man without judging them. On Yom kippor G-d is the only judge.

It appears to me that Rabbi Marmur is simply acting as an open, honest role model. This is certain to make some people feel uncomfortable since the 'status quo' has always served us well. Why should our adversaries take heed when we don't? Keep at it, Michael. We've got nothing to lose and maybe some day we will actually gain the respect of our neighbors. And if we don't, at least things may improve here at home. By the way Alan, your lack of understanding of the 'seriousness' of Rabbi Marmur's message frightens me almost as much as Ahmedinejad's permanent residence in La La Land!
