The comments on my first post An Iranian in Tel Aviv were a pleasant surprise. I'll resume that storyline in my next entry. However, in light of the upcoming Iranian elections and the media preoccupation - especially Israel's - with Iran, I want to clarify some points.

One cannot read an Israeli newspaper these days without coming across an article on the "Iranian threat." The comparisons between Iran and Nazi Germany are plentiful. It seems as if the whole nation of Israel is bracing for the second Shoah, which is supposedly going to be perpetrated by Teheran. In the Israeli and world press, the subject of the most intense scrutinizing and vilifying is none other than Mahmoud Ahmadinejad; the man whose picture is associated with the Iranian threat, and whose hands are allegedly on the "Destroy Israel" button. He is, however, the wrong guy to focus on.

There is one person in Iran who is in charge. The entire armed forces and the three branches of the government operate under his guidance. He has complete control over foreign policy in the Islamic Republic, especially national security matters. He is above the law; in fact, he defines what is law. His words are God's words and his commands are considered sacred. This all powerful man is the Supreme Leader of Iran, the Leader of all Shias in the world, His Eminence, Grand Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

If an Iranian wants to run for President, or the Parliament, or do any serious political activity, he visits the Ayatollah. After kissing his hand, he informs His Eminence of his proposed agenda. If the Ayatollah is against it, he will not dream of running for anything. If the Ayatollah is indifferent then he may give it a try, but he knows that he cannot push his luck. Ahmadinejad is no exception to this rule. He admits, proudly, that his life purpose is to serve Ayatollah Khamenei.

Why is it then that Ahmadinejad has grabbed the headlines? One reason is that he talks a lot and he is very crude. There are two speeches that stand out: one about 'wiping Israel off the map', and one about denying the Holocaust. I am no fan of Ahmadinejad. For the sake of Iran and Iranians, I hope we get rid of him in the elections next month. But I think on both of these issues, his words have been twisted.

First of all Ahmadinejad never said Israel should be "wiped off the map." If you read his speeches in Farsi, the word he uses is mahv which translates to "dissolve, disappear." In Farsi something becomes mahv because of forces of nature; it is not a word to use for 'wiping.'

Ahmadinejad's claim was that Israel will disappear as a Jewish state because it will be overwhelmed by the Arab population. Already, there is almost equal number of Arabs and Jews in Greater Palestine (Eretz Israel) and the number of Arabs is increasing at a much faster rate. Some of the more honest Israeli politicians, like FM Avigdor Lieberman, have voiced similar concerns.

The person translating Ahmadinejad's speech thought it would be cute to use the words "wipe out" to cause a sensation. News organizations, delighted by the hysteria caused by these words, followed suit. Overnight, Iran became an existential threat to Israel. No matter that his speech said something different in Farsi. No matter that he does not set Iran's foreign policy. No matter that Iran is in no position to attack Israel, given Israel's far superior military arsenal, including nuclear weapons, and America's unconditional support of Israel. The fear mongers had what they wanted and they have been running with it ever since.

What about Ahmadinejad's notorious denial of the Holocaust? The context of this scandal was the intense pressure applied by the Western world on Iran regarding human rights and freedom of speech. To counter, Ahmadinejad claimed that the Islamic Republic was more tolerant than the West. To prove his assertion, he organized a conference to discuss whether the Holocaust happened (something that could be considered a crime in most Western countries). From the point of view of Iranians, the organization of this conference was the ultimate chutzpah.

Ahmadinejad never clarified whether he believed the Holocaust happened. But whether he does or not, it doesn't change the fact that six million innocent Jews were murdered. His ambiguity, while offensive, is inconsequential. His denial of the violation of the basic rights of his countrymen is, on the other hand, quite relevant. We live under an extremely oppressive regime. We know quite well what freedom of speech is and we know we are far from having this freedom.

In short, Ahmadinejad is misunderstood. More importantly, he is not the main player. Every citizen of Iran knows that while the president's policies are influential when it comes to domestic issues, especially the economy, with regards to sensitive issues like the nuclear standoff and the relationship with the West, it is Ayatollah Khamenei who has the first and the last word, and controls all the words that come in between.

It is his picture and words that should accompany any meaningful discussion of the Iranian role in the muddy waters of politics in the Middle East.

You make a weak point about Farsi - translations are almost never literal they are taken in context and must be translated that way to equate meanings. Your argument about Ahmadinejad suffers from the loss of logical contrast because Ahmadinejad is only saying what the Ayatollah Khamenei wants him to say. We know he is just a mouth piece and we know what his veiled threats mean. Whether he says them in Farsi or any other language - they are the Ayatollah Khamenei's threats!
2  |   Dan, USA, Monday May 25, 2009
I think you make a good point about Ayatollah Khamenei being the ultimate power in Iran and not Ahmadinejad. The problem is that Ahmadinejad's comments about Israel and the Holocaust reflect Khamenei's views. For that reason, it doesn't really matter if Ahmadinejad wins or loses the upcoming election because Khamanei will continue to call the shots regardless of the outcome. However, I don't agree with you about Ahmadinejad's remarks. He has called for Israel's elimination on numerous occasions and it's clear to me he wants to see Israel destroyed. It's not a matter of translation.
3  |   Yael USA, Monday May 25, 2009
Ok. general hysteria about Iran by the media and the world . why then do the prime minister of Israel and the president of the USA consider him and Iran a major threat? don't they have access to information that confirms your assessment, if that is the true reality? Is it wishful thinking on your part, well intended but not realistic?
4  |   Yael USa, Monday May 25, 2009
Your comment has been submitted to the moderator for approval. ????????? is this a communist newspaper? why the need for approval by anyone? let the reeaders decide for themselves.
5  |   McQueen, NY, Monday May 25, 2009
And what of the Ayatollah who said that Iran could destroy Israel with one nuclear bomb and then absorb a counter-attack and survive? This article is such absurd propaganda that it will only serve to alienate people who read it.
6  |   jonah Viet-Nam, Monday May 25, 2009
No one in Israel wants to see innocent Iranians [and the great majority of them are] killed in an attack on the mullahs'war machine. There was no animosity against Israel during the Shah's rule.Israel has never forgotten Cyrus the Liberator and how the Jews were delivered from Haman's genocidal scheme by another Persian king. But the Khomeinist madness wants to reverse all that by making Iran the vanguard in the destruction of Israel.Today this genocidal plan is on the brink of implementation. What can Israel do ?
7  |   Zev Feld USA, Monday May 25, 2009
Thanks for the insider info, although it's not going to be very helpful. Jews have developed this odd fascination with short little men with facial hair ranting about destroying us. And in the case of Ahmadinejad, we probably won't get over it untl we destroy his capacity to make good on his threat. After that, we'll follow your advice and turn our attention to his boss.
8  |   Alan - US, Monday May 25, 2009
If what you say is true, why hasnt Armagedian ever attempted to correct this alledged "misconception". To say that his words were misinterpretted and that Iran has no ill will for Israel? Why has Armagedian repeatedly incited his countryman against Israel - to the cheers of hundreds of thousands? Iran is supporting Hizbella and Hamas, its building a nucklear weapon, increasing its missle capabilies. Why? Israel never threatened Iran until Iran professed its desire to destroy Israel. So Iran has declared its intent and never backed away from it.
9  |   JimO USA, Monday May 25, 2009
Iran's nuclear arsenal will grow very large in time. They will start dictating everything in the middle east and other countries will also start nuke programs. Also, what is stopping Iran from using a proxy to nuke Israel? There would be enough doubt that retaliation would be questionable. Additionally, Iran could proliferate nuke technology. Ahmadinejad is popular in Iran and he probably has similar views as the Ayatollah. if Ahmadinejad wins the election that makes a significant statement about Iran in general.
10  |   JD, Monday May 25, 2009
1) If Khamenei didn't support what Ahmadinejad was saying, it wouldn't have been said AT ALL. It is reasonable to hold these comments as indicating the Iranian government's position in general. There is no need for Israel to discuss who to 'blame'. 2) It's fine for YOU to say that Ahmadinejad is not serious, or he's misquoted, or misunderstood,. but Israel MUST take him at his word. Ahmadinejad knows what Israel thinks, and if he didn't INTEND this interpretation, it would be insane of him not to correct the 'misreporting'. THAT HE MAKES NO CORRECTION SHOWS HE IS SERIOUS.
11  |   Daniel / Sweden, Monday May 25, 2009
Poor try to convince us that Ahmadinejad is actually a good guy that happened to have problems expressing himself. Wrong translations or not, the fact is remaining that Iran's face to the world is Ahmadinejad. What we see and hear is what he shows and says. By the way, what is the problem of Iran with Israel? Does Iran really care about the injustice caused the palestinians? Iranians don't even like arabs If wiped out or disolved, the Islamic Republic of Arian wants Israel to disappear. It denies the jewish peoples right to their history of suffering during the holocaust. What a joke!
12  |   /Goldberger, Scotland, Monday May 25, 2009
Great post, refreshingly intelligent.
13  |   Michael, Israel, Monday May 25, 2009
Other than the valid point that Khamenei is in charge, this article is nothing but a transparent apology for the Iranian case. Ahmandijejad isn't the only senior Iranian to threaten Israel, and it's been done very clearly many times. And Holocaust denial is also a routine argument of the Iranian regime. Comparisons of Iran to Nazi Germany are quite apt, and Israel most definitely should be treating the Iranian regime as an existential threat.
14  |   muslim, Monday May 25, 2009
i don't know how the united states-saudi arabia-israel-egypt etc.. ETC... will deal with ahmedinejad-khamenei' s nuclear installations but one thing is sure...they have a plan AND THE ARAB STREET WON'T PROTECT IRAN...IF IRAN ATTACKS SAUDI ARABIA...THE AMERICANS WILL GO FOR A REGIME CHANGE.khamenei is an old man and ahmedinejad with his lunatics that are waiting the mahdi have taken power ...Iranians and their regular army can do nothing.AHMEDINEJAD IS ONLY ONE OF MANY LUNATICS AND THEY HAVE REAL POWER AND THEY ARE SUICIDAL.
15  |   Moises, Monday May 25, 2009
Excellent article. As a non-Iranian, I have been aware of Ahmadinejad's inconsequence for a long time. On the other hand, I will be enjoying the freedom of expression granted in both Israel and Panama (because I can write this) when I write what I perceive as the biggest threat: the vagueness of the Islamic religion itself. To this problem, there is no human solution.
16  |   Mark USA, Monday May 25, 2009
Weak sophistry, of a quality sufficient to sway an Obama voter. As previously stated by others, had Ahmadinejad been concerned about being "misinterpreted" he simply needed to publicly correct this. The deeper question for Israel is will they the adopt the populist foreign policies advanced by Obamists who naively believe that all conflicts can be resolved through negotiation. The history of modern day Israel and the Jewish people shows the futility of negotioating from weakness, utlimately might does make right.
17  |   Brian, New York, Tuesday May 26, 2009
So the important question becomes does Khamenei want to try to wipe out, dissolve, or make Israel disappear? If so, what steps is he willing to take to make that happen? The problem is many people are afraid that mutually assured destruction will not be a deterrent to Khamenei launching a first strike against Israel. Here is some advice to take home, if it's true that Ahmadinejad is all talk, tell him to shut up. History has proven that trying to bluff Israel is not a good route to take.
18  |   Peer Gynt, Norway, Tuesday May 26, 2009
Thank you, A.A. Sheida for the picture of the Iranien nuclear threat. I am not a jew and you have made it 100% clear to me that Ayatollah Khamenei is a peacelovin friend of Israel and that his ugly majorety elected pet, Ahmadinejad, is a noob with no impact nor real power. No I clearly understand that the production of plutonium is for peaceful means only and that the rockets launched lately are the results of the Ayatollahs wish to develop space technology in order to plant the first muslim flag on Mars and rename the planet after another warmonger. Well done photoshopping, mr. Sheida...
19  |   Ed, Tuesday May 26, 2009
Why does JPost print this Iranian propoganda. Anyone who studies Iranian history and culture knows they are masters of Taqiyya (deception).
20  |   Ruthie, MO, Tuesday May 26, 2009
i think israel has every right to be worried about a president who no matter what anyone thinks, hates israel and jewish ppl in general. the fact he actually has to "question" whether the shoah happened is insane to me! and i believe that israel is not his only target but usa has to worry about iran as well. i mean, iran says they stand in solidarity with palestine, right, ok aren't there arabs who live in israel?? ok, if he launches a nuke at israel and by the country being so small, wouldn't he wipe out palestine as well?? his goal is to destroy America, that's his real target!
21  |   David, Houston, TX, Tuesday May 26, 2009
Dissolve the country is the same as calling for its dissolution which of course is what the USA has openly aspired to cause to the government of IRAN, but not to the country itself. Ahmadinejad is the choice of the people and of the Ayatollah so his voice is the undisputed voice of the whole country. He calls for the violent destruction of Israel. Who is misunderstanding? Also, having a discussion about whether the holocaust happened when you fund and train Hezbollah murderers seems to be kettles calling pots black. Your leaders are liars and murderers.
22  |   Larry NY, Tuesday May 26, 2009
OHHHHHH I see!!!!! It was all just a misunderstanding!! Shucks! And to think we just accepted the words of one translator who changed the course of history! No holocaust denial, no nuclear bomb!! What he did say was that the holocaust did happen, and that he HATES nuclear bombs, till some foolish evil non believer made the incorrect translation of it all!!' WOW, and to think I was actually worried for a moment!!!!!!
23  |   Doris T., USA, Tuesday May 26, 2009
There are many Persian Jews (like me) around the world who understand Ahmadinejad's words perfectly well.He speaks very simple Farsi. His meaning has been very clear in more than one speech. And it does not matter that Khamenei is the true power in Iran, Ahmadinejad's words obviously have his blessings..As U say no politician can "push his luck" against the wishes of the Grand Ahyatollah. My friend, I respect U. U R obviously kind and open minded. But do not take our fears lightly. Iran has already supplied our enemies w/the weapons they use against us.. & we cannot permit them to have nuclear..
24  |   Chris USA, Tuesday May 26, 2009
I doubt seriously if Ahmadinejad ever had an original thought in his life. I suspect all his speechs are "pages" from the "dreams" of the Ayatolla Khamenei. The "president" of Iran doesn't so much as open his mouth with out the Ayatollah's permission...
25  |   JW New York, USA, Tuesday May 26, 2009
Your whole article is a contradiction. If as you say Khameni is the "one person in Iran who is in charge," in Iran, then in the famous slogan of Harry Truman, "the buck stops here." He can't shun responsibility for every idiotic behavior of Ahmedinajad or terrorist attack supported by Iran whether in southern Iraq, northern Israel, Gaza, or in Buenos Aires.
26  |   dino-ashkelon, Tuesday May 26, 2009
Yes,the author of the article says the truth, isn't a real reason for which Israel could feel a threat from Iran, all is exaggerated by the rightist press from Israel (in fact whole the country because here "left" doesn't exist) and and their servant scribes from US.All my respect for JP for presenting sometimes healthy points of view.
27  |   Persian, USA, Tuesday May 26, 2009
I disagree with the writer about the zeal and ambitions of these fanatic muslims. for the last 30 years they support, finance and perform anti-Israeli and anti jewish terror activities all over the world. who supplied 12,000 rockets to Hizbullah in Lebanon? who rewards the families of the suicide Bombers? who is arming and training HAMAS to the teeth? who sent CARINE-A ship to Gaza? whose weapons are smuggled under tunnels in Egypt? when the Shiahab-3 rockets march through Tehran, visible words say "israel MUST be wiped off the map". please dont play with words!
28  |   Avishai Friedman, Haifa, Israel, Tuesday May 26, 2009
I like your post since it gives an alternative perspective on this issue. Most Israeli's are unfamiliar with how Iran works internally. That said, I think it would be a huge mistake to not take Iran's general overtones - the disregard for international opinion, the flexing of muscles, the nuclear program - for what it is: an attempt to become the dominant middle-east power and export it's ideology en masse. And Iran acheives legitimacy in the Arab/muslim world by vilifying America/Israel/the west. I found reading 'The world is flat' by Thomas Friedman useful
29  |   Rajeev, Tuesday May 26, 2009
No matter what amount of diplomacy or militery power Israel or US uses they will not be able to stop Iran for acquiring the Nukes which they both have. What Israel is doing in Middle east since 60 years. Isn't it a regional hegemony. In fact ifyou read the minds of general middle eastern whether living in Egypt, Syria, Lebanon, west bank, Jordan, Soudy Arabia ior Iran Israel is a biggest threat. They will surely try to win more lands to make Greater israel. At this time it seems absurd but it is a reality.
30  |   sarah, Tuesday May 26, 2009
I live in Israel and frankly fear Iran's acquisition of nuclear weapons since so many in the Revolutionary Guard and the government have proclaimed their intent to use them and their hostility towards my country. But at the same time, my college roommate was from Iran, and returned there after marriage to raise her familly---and I would not want her or her family harmed, either. If Iran would turn down it's rhetoric of destruction and try to help settle the conflict instead of using it to serve Iran's political interests, it would go a long way towards pulling us all back from the brink of war.
31  |   A. L. Flanagan, Richmond, USA, Tuesday May 26, 2009
So, no matter what the appearance, in practice Iran is a single-ruler totalitarian state. Just to be clear.
32  |   sean, Tuesday May 26, 2009
Stop telling us we got the translation wrong. We don't speak Farsi. The regime's English propaganda arm (IRNA and the laughable Press TV) always translate it as "Wipe from the map". I'm inclined to go with them rather than you, because they are the proverbial 'horse's mouth'...
33  |   Jen USA, Tuesday May 26, 2009
I loved this post! How refreshing to get an Iranian perspective. Just a little question. If the Grand Ayatollah were to allow a moderate populist to run & this candidate were to win, would the candidate not change the tone, if not sway the content, of Iran's policies? It seems that a popular politician has some freedom of thought & word. Isn't this why Ahmadinijad has the ability to make such huge missteps & embarrass Iranians? If not, he would be more restrained in his speech. The Grand Ayatollah is the unquestioned center of power BUT the other leaders do have some power... & responsibility.
34  |   Mel Bailey, Tuesday May 26, 2009
Imagine the dismay of Germany's Chancellor who actually provided proof to President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad of the Holocast when he visited her recently. After his visit, he denied it all to be true which she dutifully reported in the following statements at [ Link to page ] The threat is real. Read all about it in Ezekiel 39 Chapter 1 at [ Link to page ]
35  |   Silence Dogood, Tuesday May 26, 2009
RE: 1 | Chris USA, READ [ Link to page ] Chris, apparently, A-jad doesn't agree with you. In this interview, he fails to correct the "wiped out" translation, though asked numerous times. It would seem we should take him at his words, not your wishful interpretation.
36  |   Yaakov from Jerusalem, Tuesday May 26, 2009
This is nothing but foolish jibberish by either a pie in the sky dreamer or a deliberate propagandist. The world already knows that K is in charge but he obviously approves what A says. He also approves the support of Hizbullah, Hamas and all kinds of terrorism.. Wake up world before it's too late!
37  |   GerIsraeL Waterbury,CT, Tuesday May 26, 2009
Ger Israek USA Never understimate an enemy-the mistake of 1938 should not be repeated. To say his words are twisted is an attempt to whitewash the odious smell of anti-Semitism that comes from the highest echelons of the iranian government. The conference on the Holocaust was not only offensive, it reflected greatly how the Iranian leadership truly feels about Israel and the Jews in general--there useless, expendable and liars.Iranian government as presently constructed increases the chances for war not diminishea it.
38  |   James USA, Tuesday May 26, 2009
What percentage of the population of Iran realize the totalitarian regime they live under and that this regime will sacrifice the entire country to bring back the Mahdi without blinking an eye? Why have the Beautiful Persians of Iran not risen up to rid themselves of this menace that is virtually destoying Persia since 1979? Why do you let them murder so many of your fellow Iranians and brutally oppress the women of Persia?
39  |   Ronald USA, Tuesday May 26, 2009
This article is propaganda intended to mislead. 1) I have seen translated quotes from Khamenei and they are essentially identical in meaning to those of Achmadinejad. 2) If it is true that Khamenei has made statements about Israel that contradict those of Achmadinejad, the author didn't quote them for us. That is a major omission of facts that could have (but didn't) buttress his case. 3) Khamenei knows what the world's media is saying about Achmadinejad. If Khamenei disagreed with Achmadinejad's statements and policies, he could easily distance himself from them, which he hasn't done.
40  |   Rafael, France/US, Wednesday May 27, 2009
OK so there is a translation controversy about the meaning of a phrase which has caused an international crisis and could cause nuclear war. But if it is true that Ahmadinejad or his boss were misunderstood and only meant that Israel will fade away demographically, then why don't Ahmadinejad or Allah's messenger issue a statement to that effect. That is the normal custom and is often done by statesmen in normal countries. I'm waiting. s that
41  |   Jim WY USA, Wednesday May 27, 2009
This is a silly and yes stupid article. Who cares whether or who is the mouth piece for Iran. It all has the nsame meanining. Iran wants a nuclear weappon and the world would be insane to let them have it. The threats have been clear. The Koran and Hadith are clear in the desire for world domination and the destruction of Israel and the west. The only question is when will Israel and the west wake up and deal with the threat before it becomes more costly in lives and destruction.
42  |   Fourthfilos, Virginia, USA, Wednesday May 27, 2009
This news report was published by IRIB on the internet at [ Link to page ] . Almost immediately after Ahmadinejad called for Israel to be “WIPED OFF THE MAP”, his spinners, apologists and propagandists tried to convince the world that he didn’t REALLY say “wiped off the map” and that his words had been, in Mr. Shaida’s words, “twisted”. IRIB has since removed their October 26, 2005 report because it DISPROVED the “mistranslation” assertions of Ahmadinejad’s spinners, apologists and propagandists, such as Mr. Saida.
43  |   Fourthfilos, Virginia, USA, Wednesday May 27, 2009
Mr Saida’s defense of Ahmadinejad’s Holocaust denial is even more contemptible. He offers as “context”, the “intense pressure applied by the Western world on Iran regarding human rights and freedom of speech”. There are, in fact, horrendous violations of human rights and free speech in Iran (which Mr. Saida later acknowledges). Is Mr. Saida asserting that, in response to GENUINE expressions of concern over violations of human rights and suppression of free speech in Iran Ahmadinejad is demonstrating his commitment to free speech by hosting a conference on the vile lie of holocaust denial?
44  |   Fourthfilos, Virginia, USA, Wednesday May 27, 2009
Poor Ahmadinejad. According to Mr. Saida he is not only “misunderstood”, he is “inconsequential” because Khamenei holds the real power in Iran. Ahmadinejad is “misunderstood” ONLY if people listen to the distortions and excuses offered by his apologists and propagandists like Mr. Saida. He is NOT inconsequential because he is Khamenei’s MOUTHPIECE. He is Khamenei's CHOSEN CANDIDATE for "President" of Iran. Mr. Saida’s claims would be highly welcome on al Manar or al Jazeera. Why is he published in the Jerusalem Post?
45  |   Jeff, Proud American, Wednesday May 27, 2009
You have courage knowing what reaction this blog would create. I agree Iran , an enemy of Israel and Jews and the US, is not going to "wipe out" Israel. You make an important point about the military power difference between Iran and Israel. Even if Iran had a few nukes they would be low yield. Israel is generally considered to have at least 200 nuclear devices including an unknown number of thermonuclear weapons which are approximately 100 times as powerful as the Hiroshima bomb. The total power of Israel's nuclear arsenal , even if Iran has 5 to 10 nukes is at least 100 times more powerful
46  |   Chris USA, Wednesday May 27, 2009
35. Silence Dogood: I'm not interested in A-jad's deprecations. Iran's intentions are a product of their actions not smoke and mirrors. Iranian strategic interests haven't changed since they were allies with the Medes as the Persians. The're simply being played out on a more modern stage. Palestinians are just a tool they use to keep the region unstabie and ensure all the oil goes through the Straights of Hormuz and not to Egypt. If Iran gets nukes their first priority is the Kurds because Iran wants all the Middle East oil and much more as well.
47  |   Sharona, Wednesday May 27, 2009
Hello and thank you for taking your life in your hands to blog. Iran is a dangerous rogue state. You say you live under an extremely repressive regime. ALL Muslim countries are extrememly repressive regimes for WOMEN at least. I eagerly await more on your trip to Israel. Be well and safe!
48  |   motherofmany-USA, Wednesday May 27, 2009
If Ahmadinejad was merely saying Israel would be disolved by the increasing number of Muslims in the land, what is the correct assessment of similar threats against the US? Is he saying we will be overrun by Muslims as well? Doesn't quite make sense that way.
49  |   Lamin darboe Leicester UK, Wednesday May 27, 2009
I am a great admirer of the jewish people and the state of israel. Although a muslim, I would never want a war between Arabs/muslims and Israel, because war and violence hardly solve existential problems, instead it excerbates it and keeping it looming for generations to come. I am a muslim but I will never support Arabs against Israel for the simple fact that i find isrealist less raciest towards black people than Arabs. My boss who fought in 1967 war was a testament to this notion. Mr Eric Button was his name, I was amazed at his coolness and fairness towards me and many people of color. I t

The strategic exhortation for this century is one which extol continuous innovation, this is more poignant in the realm of national security . Israel should evaluate its strategy over the years by asking: Is it working, has it guranteed our socio-economic,and national security objectives . And with forward planning; is it likely to do so in decades to come. if ansswer is no; then a radical initiative is required that with fulfill present and future security objectives. To me the existence of israel is inviolable and all Arabs should realise that and create practical catalyst for lasting peace.

The truth is the world as well as the Iranians know almost all facts about this regime! We know of its brutality, cruelty and lies! But as an Iranian who has lived in the west, I just can't understand why yo many people think that this regime is about religious fanaticism? Is it just because they say so? Well then I must mention that we have heard a lot of lies from the regime! What makes you think that this regime is different from any other dictatorial regime, trying to stay in power? One dictator uses an ideology the other religion as a means of staying in power!

For over 15 years, near Tehran Mehrabad Airport, in the Azadi Circle, where mass demonstrations and the annual ceremonies of Armed Forces Day take place, the following Arabic slogan has been visible on a firm banner mounted on metalic columns: ??????? ??? ?? ???? ?? ?????? It explicitly instructs Moslems that Israel must be removed from existence.
53  |   Gary T - USA, Wednesday May 27, 2009
Ahmadinejad knows his time has come. He was elected in a world where Pres Bush, having just received Iranian assistance in Afghanistan after 9/11, decided to name Iran as part of the Axis of Evil. Then came Iraq. The Iranian leaders thought their regime could be next, and worried that a free, secular Iraq could inspire young Iranians to oppose their own government. Enter Ahmadinejad. He unites the Iranian people by giving them an enemy to hate and a threat to fear. As long as the rhetoric doesn't get too heated, Ahmadinejad will lose in June, and there will be a US embassy there by December.
54  |   james, Thursday May 28, 2009
yes it is
55  |   Lamin darboe Leicester UK, Thursday May 28, 2009
I concure with Garry T, harsh rethoric which i consider an emotional exudation is eschewed, cool headedness will ensue. Dictators survive by rallying their countries against a fabricated threat or evil , then we are overpowered by emotion and irrationality. Life revolves arround that perceived enemy or evil , so we waste resources to fight that enemy. Unconciously we cement the dictatorial rule. African dictators knows this dictum very well. So both iranians and iraeli peoples must rise above emotion and see positives impulse in each other. This is a challenge for the young.

I am happy our man from Tehran came to Israel and wrote honestly about his experiences, but in this piece the delusions of living under a totalitarian regime really begin to show and fly in the face of reality. When we see pictures of ballistic missiles on display in Iran and captions calling to wipe Israel off the map, we know the Iranian regime isn't boasting that it is waiting for the forces of nature to take it's course. When Ahmadinejad turns Tehran into a Holocaust Denial Circus with members of the Ku Klux Klan as VIPs it unveils the true face of hate and facism behind this regime.

"In short, Ahmadinejad is misunderstood." You insult our intelligence. Clearly, you are a propagandist working for Iran. Please see the following clips from MEMRITV.ORG: #1784, #1868, #1694, #1585, #1558, #1482, #1328, #1301, #1288, #1241, #1222, #1116, #987, #963, #956, and #782, to name just a few "troubling" speeches. Please stop your obfuscation. The readers deserve a more honest discussion than what you are willing to offer.

I'm not defending iranians, but those guys are surrounded by Irak (USA) Pakistan (USA) Afganistan (USA) and India (USA). What else can they do? They are the ones with fear. Their real enemies are Sunnies, their fiction is to conquer the world as in the past

All true: the translations were misinterpreted. Moreover, Ahmadinejad was merely quoting late Khomeini and not expressing his own thoughts (if he has ones). And yes, Ahmadinejad is a sock puppet. However, the regime's intentions were not misinterpreted nor misunderstood... It's a very long-term project of Khamenei, and probably the people of Israel do have reasons to brace themselves. It may not be nuclear but rather an attrition war encompassing Iranian satellites. Plus, I believe, "Death to America" and "Death to Israel" are still quite literal, no?

Neda is the calling of you do not need guns to change people all you need is the knowledge of frredom and the truth. It is very sad that people like Neda die but it shows the world that you can not lie and bully people to do what you want. People want to do the right thing and have a chance to be successful the right way. May we all keep our eyes open for Neda as hers are closedmay we all see that the Pen is Mightyer than the sword words stronger that bullits... alie has speed but truth last forever......We need to give people in the outback TV radio and let them see the truth !

If we allow these so called Supreme Killers, they will bring Hitler back from grave with one arm holding a nuclear weapon.Time is now when there are millions of very unhappy brave Iranians standing up for change, let's help them change the regime today or stand on sidelines and watch Hitler march streets of Tel-Aviv. Free Iran Now lets GO.

What a fantastic coup if Ayatollah Khamenei could be spirited out of iran and tried in Israel as an enemy who spreads genocidal threats against the Jewish people. I yearn for the day to arrive when they hang all those evil Ayatollahs and immams from cranes.
