The Schalit affair and the fashion in which the Olmert government handled it illustrated Ehud Olmert's shortcomings as the prime minister of what was possibly the most disappointing and inept government in the history of the country.

The Olmert government, seen as moderate and pragmatic, didn't succeed in reaching or even taking a single step toward a solution to the conflict in the national arena. Every time there was meaningful decision to be made, Olmert, Livni and Barak turned their backs on their responsibilities to the public and passed up every real chance to make progress.

Olmert cannot claim to have been surprised by the other side during his negotiations with them. As in the national dialogue, so in the matter of prisoner exchanges: the price for reaching a deal was known, and reaching an agreement depended on the prime minister's courage and determination to make painful and controversial decisions.

Negotiations with the Palestinians and Syrians have gone nowhere, and despite the price for reaching agreements with them being known to all, Olmert didn't dare come to the point of making a decision and bringing even a shred of a future peace deal before the public. Talks on the future of the two-state solution and moving towards normalized relations with Syria remain unresolved, the peace summits and rounds of talks have led nowhere.

When it comes to its policies on the ground, the Olmert government acted in complete contradiction to its public statements. The prime minister did not remove roadblocks, and succumbed to pressure exerted on him by settlers to confirm thousands of additional housing units in the West Bank. When push came to shove, he did not dare to remove a single outpost.

The Schalit affair is perhaps the most chilling example of the failed and deceitful policies of the Olmert government. Ministers - with the active help of the prime minister's wife Aliza - managed to present the false impression that they, as moderate, sane people, would approve the deal days before the new, right-wing government took over.

In practice, Olmert balked at bringing the well-known price for Schalit's release  to the government for approval. At the last minute, under a blanket of secrecy, he issued a statement blaming Hamas for toughening its stance.

Truth be told, Olmert's handling of the Schalit affair is a direct continuation of the way he handled the diplomatic arena during his tenure. Instead of facing reality and making a decision at the moment of truth, Olmert and his ministers settled for empty promises. As his tenure comes to an end, it can now clearly be said that his government's moderate and pragmatic public image turned out to be one of the greatest deceits in the history of Israeli politics.

This is a foolish article. What do you know, Yariv, about how Olmert has been handling the Schalit affair? These things must be handled discreetly, and your expectation to know everything that has been going on behind the scenes is ridiculous (and that's a kind word). Israel has ALWAYS done everything reasonably possible to release its citizens from enemy hands, and there is absolutely no reason to claim that the Schalit affair has been handled differently. The public demonstrations DO NOT HELP!!! In fact they only make Schalit's release prohibitively costly to our security.

Take Oppenheimer with you and go back to France. The Olmert govt is the second biggest deceit in Israels history. The largest deceit has been the Oslo process, which has cost 2000 Israeli lives, and the only beneficiary has been Iran. Oppenheimer has played a major role on this deceit. I call on Olmert, Oppenheimer and friends to move to Paris and spend the rest of their days partying with Suha Arafat and Mohammed al Dura

The land was given to Israel in the Torha. It should not be given away, divided or any other way parted to be in any way land not owned by Israel. Anyone wanting otherwise is not following what was written in the Torah.

The only way to handle the Shalit affair is by failure because we are forced to play by the rules of our enemies. This is what Yariv wants, because by playing by their rules he hopes for their approval and acceptance. But that's not the way the world works. That's not how people work. The disasters which hit Israel since the signing of the Oslo accords should provide ample proof. I'm for a 2 state solution, I'm happy Israel left Gaza. But I am not happy that there are still so many people insisting on fooling not only themselves, but the entire country. Stop it. I beg you.

John Milk: Oppenheimer you're an arrogant jerk -- the Jews are the "oppressed and harried people," not your made "Palestinians" who are no more (and no less) than Arabs under a neat, new moniker. Had the Romans not changed the name of Judea to Palestina the Jews would be facing the Judean Liberation Organization. You and you are the oppressor! Yes, you are a jerk AND a moron AND the oppressor. You work in service of the Jews' enemy.
Laine Frajberg Montreal: Wonder what hallucenegenics this guy is on.My guess is that it's something very strong-probably LSD.
Scotland: Why people would fight for this god forsaken desert land is beyond me. History is full of battles to take it. Apart from now that it could (by the hand of mad men) turn into a 3rd world war. And why would palestine settle for statehood when they could be an indipendant country. Build a wall through the land and leave each other alone. BTW, the fact that Isreal threw out those palestinian families on the street a few days ago, didn't help the international community to side with Israel.
