In a respectful, official and honest manner, without bold statements and dramatic speeches, Ehud Barak announced that despite the political temptation to oust Olmert and present himself a political alternative, he was choosing to stay in the government for the good of the country and to achieve personal goals.

There are no objections to the fact that in the short-term, the option to dissolve the coalition is the best possible scenario Barak could face; crushing Kadima, fulfilling his promise to go to elections and displaying responsibility and moral values which would have played to his advantage mere hours after he would have announced his resignation from the government.

Furthermore, pulling Labor from the government and going to elections would have completely obliterated Olmert's political future and would have cleared the way for Labor to return to the center of Israel's political sphere.

However, Labor Chairman and Defense Minister Barak decided to choose option 2; the harder, unpopular option but the necessary one for Israel. Barak understood that immediate withdrawal from the government would essentially mean the complete collapse of the governing system in Israel, new elections and the halting of all processes started by the government; from rehabilitating the IDF to furthering the principles outlined at Annapolis and jump-starting peace talks with the Palestinians. Punishing Olmert is an important process whose time will come, but the dismantling of the government would have been punishment for the whole country. It would have created a situation of authoritative, political and national anarchy.

In choosing to stay in the government, Barak will be forced to pay a heavy public and political price. The continued existence of the coalition provides Olmert with an authorization certificate (even if temporary) to keep serving as the PM. The decision is in fact a violation of public commitment towards the voter and provides Kadima and its members with a precious and important window of opportunity to recover politically and to rehabilitate its public standing. Without a doubt, from a political perspective, Barak's decision is catastrophic. But from a national perspective, the decision is a ray of sunshine with regards to national responsibility.

Labor Secretary-General MK Eitan Cabel is correct when he says that the Labor Party is due to pay a heavy price for the courageous and responsible decision of Barak. Indeed, the good of the party has been swept aside for the good of the country as a whole. There's hope that once the murky waves of criticism and slander at home and abroad pass, the public will recognize that Barak made an unpopular and almost impossible decision for the good of the country.

Currently, there is still hope that Labor's position in the government is not in vain and with the encouragement from the peace camp, Olmert will fulfill his promises and act decisively to further a permanent peace agreement with the Palestinians. If Labor remains paralyzed within the government and treads aimlessly with Kadima, with no political agenda and no way forward, the current move by Barak will cost the Labor party and the left-wing in general dearly.

Barak has the responsibility to ensure that his decision to stay is based on the will to move forward with the peace process, including the dismantling and immediate evacuation of settlements and putting a construction-freeze on outposts. This all has to be done simultaneously with ensuring that the proper lessons drawn from the war in the military and defense fields are implemented.

Once again Mr. Oppenheimer deludes us and himself (mostly himself) with the prospects of peace with people who will not even agree that Israel has the right to exist. The only thing these people understand is strenghth and the will to defend yourself.

What chutzpa _ Israel would fall into anarchy without Kadima or Labour - important changes won't be made without them? PURE CHUTZPA - Labour and Kadima and Peace Now policies have resulted in nothing. Nothing except death and destruction of Jewish lives and property as well as the so called moderate palestinians and their legitimate economy.
Barak and Olmert et al simply continue the lack of accoutability of the Israeli parlamentary system that protects the connected and inept and they lead that pack. Continue your self delusion.

Yariv is right. Olmert is corrupt so we elitists can blackmail him. We would be in real trouble if an honest right winger came to power that we couldnt blackmail. That would be scarier than Ahmadinejad

I am pleased to see that no one thinks this article is worthy of a comment

For Oppenheimer, the issue is Olmert. However, the real issue is Israel's welfare. Olmert is an insignificant, likely criminal, who doesn't belong in the P.M.'s office for a dozen good reasons; ranging from corruption to total incompetence in military, domestic and international matters. It's not a matter of punishing Olmert. It's a matter of saving Israel. Speaking of which, it's time Peace Now was brought to trial for espionage. That's exactly what handing over aerial maps of Israeli development, to our enemies, is!

This is the most inane posting Oppenheimer has ever made. Calling elections will cause "anarchy"? That is what every dictator says. Oppenheimer likes the coalition in power because he dreams they will drive the Jews out of Judea/Samaria, so everything is justified in keeping them in power indefinitely, as the hyper-politicized Oppenheimer claims. Maybe Oppenheimer should advocate cancelling all future elections, because they might cause "anarchy"? It seems there is no limit to the depths these political fanatics won't descend to in order to keep power.

You are right now is not the right time, we should have gotten rid of him right after the war. But better late than never. NOW is the second best time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yariv, you don't care how immoral a PM Olmert is or how many more cities and lives he may sacrifice as he tries to please all the Foreign ( peace) Ministers. As long as Olmert seems willing to withdraw from "settler" territory-that's your number 1 value.

The author of this article is quite naive. You can't "build the bridges" with someone who hates you and only wants you dead.
Palistinians haven't showed any willingness to live in peace. But only aggression.
Well...they should get what they deserve - a war. Not these helpless responses from time to time.
I wonder what happen to Israel's Pride, to the spirit of 1967 Victory? Whare are your leaders, Israel!
Get angry, my people! Do not let your polititions to sacrifice your very existance.

John Milk: Oppenheimer you're an arrogant jerk -- the Jews are the "oppressed and harried people," not your made "Palestinians" who are no more (and no less) than Arabs under a neat, new moniker. Had the Romans not changed the name of Judea to Palestina the Jews would be facing the Judean Liberation Organization. You and you are the oppressor! Yes, you are a jerk AND a moron AND the oppressor. You work in service of the Jews' enemy.
Laine Frajberg Montreal: Wonder what hallucenegenics this guy is on.My guess is that it's something very strong-probably LSD.
Scotland: Why people would fight for this god forsaken desert land is beyond me. History is full of battles to take it. Apart from now that it could (by the hand of mad men) turn into a 3rd world war. And why would palestine settle for statehood when they could be an indipendant country. Build a wall through the land and leave each other alone. BTW, the fact that Isreal threw out those palestinian families on the street a few days ago, didn't help the international community to side with Israel.
