Building Bridges: Netanyahu government exposed Posted by Yariv Oppenheimer
Comments: 22
PM Binyamin (Bibi) Netanyahu's speech at Bar Ilan University earlier this month did not bring forward any ideological change vis-a-vis the two-state solution. It can now be said loudly and clearly that the 'emperor has no clothes.' Bibi remains Bibi - with a tad more sophistication ultimately of no consequence to the State of Israel - with no vision, no direction, and no correctness to lead us through the required decisions. Netanyahu tried to reinvent himself but even the succession of the words 'Palestinian' and 'state' is no magic formula for covering up the political 'nudity' of Netanyahu and his government. It is no surprise that Minister without Portfolio Bennie Begin (Likud), Minister of Strategic Affairs Moshe (Bougie) Ya'alon (Likud), Interior Minister Eli Yishai (Shas) and Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman and his Israel Beitenu Party did not threaten to dissolve the government or force an election. They understood that there was no reason to worry. Netanyahu was and remains a right-wing leader committed to an outlook supportive of the 'Greater Israel' solution. Talk of two-states is just a tactic designed to disguise the intention to expand settlements and to prevent any real political progress towards peace. ![]() Palestinian women watch Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu's vision of the establishment of a "demilitarized Palestinian state" places the lives of Palestinians at the mercy of the Israeli government; freedom of movement and normal lives are a 'prize' the government is willing to bestow on the Palestinians, contingent to their behavior, of course. Every step forward by Israel represents another stage in the impossible attempt to tame the Palestinian people and turn them into nice house pets. On the other hand, the PM has clarified that the Israeli government has complete freedom to act, to build, to expand and to dictate the terms on the ground in the territories because with all due respect for the Palestinians - the settlers are flesh of our flesh and we are talking about internal politics. And even on this subject the Palestinians have no rights to protest or object. This outrageous and arrogant approach from one side taking it upon itself to decide for the other side will never lead to a peace agreement or reconciliation between the two peoples. On the contrary, a forceful, patronizing approach will lead the moderate Palestinian government to reject the crumbs Israel is throwing its way and cause it to lean towards the more extremist side which advocates violent resistance against the occupation, instead of negotiation. If Netanyahu continues to speak and act like he did at Bar Ilan, the third intifada will be just around te corner. But this time, international support will be firmly for the Palestinian side. The Prime Minister's Office was quick to portray the speech as representative of wide Israeli consensus on the issues. If that is the case, Israeli society is then in a forlorn and despondent state.

Spoken with all the conviction of an overeducated turnip! If you are really trying to build bridges perhaps it would be better if you didn't douse yourself with literary gasoline while playing with matches. A true comedy of errors! Did Hamas pay you for this propaganda? Are you a Guardian of the City? After reading this I'm suprised not to see you at the parking lot throwing stones ...

Oppenheimer's statement above is correct but he is confusing the identity of the real perpetrator. The Arab-Moslem world arrogantly demands Jewish submission and denies the Jewish people the same national rights that Arabs take for granted themselves. As long as this racist supremacist ideology guides the Arab world, a genuine peace will remain a hopeless dream.

Jews are not SETTLERS called them PATRIOTS and IDEALIST. Jews are residents of the Jewish homeland. Call the Arabs invaders or settlers? Any one who loves his country enough to make the sacrifice and reside among enemies so that the people in Tel Aviv can exist in peace and have a homeland is a PATRIOT. Many of the LEFT misuse the language to mislead the general reader. The army was sent to destroy the homes of idealist using brutality not even used against our enemies is unforgivable.

Palestinians are currently represented by an ineffectual Abbas and a terrorist Hammas, and of course any lack of peace will be the fault of Netanyahu and his incredulous claim that a future Palestinian state pose no threat to Israel and that Jerusalem is not a settlement. Claims that 4 generations of Palestinians born abroad should flood Israel as refugees is not a problem, refusal to accept Israel as a Jewish state as Netanyahu (and most Israelis) recognize Palestinian statehood - also inconsequential. The fact that the last intifadah was started after an offer peace and statehood, no p.

That AP photo is soooo obviously staged and biased. As if muslim women normally wear their coverings INSIDE (if they do it's only they or their men's desire to conceal identity. So why not photo men, or the kids?). As if they need to sit on the floor because they're too poor to have chairs. Get real. This is one for the folks at Whistleblower.
Ohh... the poor chairless women suffering under the evil tyrant Netanyahu...

If this is the way Jews treat non-Jews, the Netanyahu way, then why blame the Nazis for treating Jews as they treated them.
Yes, Israel is not sending Palestinians to gas chambers. However, we should remember that the holocaust didn't start with Gas chambers, but with dehumanizing Jews, discrimination, mein Kampf and then Kristalnacht... very much as Jews are doing to the Palestinians now.

Alas, what a forlorn and despondent state Israeli Society is headed into. Personally I think it's time to pack your bags and move elsewhere.
Oh, and by the way, GOOD RIDDANCE.

So what exactly would you like Netanyahu to do? No matter what Israel does, there will be violence and extremism among the Palestinians. I thought yourtheory was debunked when the rockets started flying from Gaza. Netanyahu made it very clear that he desires the two people to live alongside one another in peace, but the way to do it is not through unilateral concessions. If he just gave up the West Bank, rockets would fly toward the heart of Israel. I think he is being realistic in saying that the Palestinians must develope economically before achieving statehood.

I'm trying to clarify: you're against the demilitarization of a Palestinian state... so does that mean you want a militarized and armed Palestinian state? And if the Palestinian state is militarized.... how would that contribute towards peace?

your analysis is totally wrong as pals will never be satisfied whatever you throw at them. They had numerous very generous offers from previous dummy Israeli Prime Ministers and guess what? Total rejection, intifada and terrorism. We have witnessed what happened in South Lebanon and Gaza. I hope Mr. Nethaniahu, stands strong against all the so called friends such as Obama, Sarkozy and Co.The new Israeli government has to understand that they have almost no friends at large and to rely on their steadfastness and unite again like never before.

Only yariv is forlorn and despondent because his vision has been rejected by the israeli voting public, which is the only public that counts. His vision of peace, and the steps neccessary have been rejected, for now at least, and thats how it works in a democracy. Perhaps democratically derived decisions are inconvienient for yariv, but they hold the day..What is yariv saying, that a third intifada will recieve international support?Last time I checked, that support didnt do anything to stop the violence in the first two intifadas, or even temper it.Simple grandstanding, to be ignored.

I'm an American and so have no direct interest in internal Israeli politics. But I find myself wondering exactly what this writer expects would happen if Israel did stop settlement expansion.
Would the Islamic fanatics suddenly decide to accept Israel's right to exist?
Or is the author of this article just striking out at Netanyahu?

I hope that one day, Opi will care as much about his people as he does the people who started 5 wars agains them, deny thier 2500 yr history and thier cultural heritage to Israel. Opi's column is as usual bereft of any logic and tries to play a fear of some 3rd intifada as a reason to throw the Jewish people "under the bus" for leftist dreams. PEACE not PIECE is a concept far removed from the minds of loonatic leftists. Bibi did as much as he could do with out destroying the current govt and made it clear that if the arabs are to get anything - it would be come from RESPECT for the Jews.

Yariv, the Palestinians, arab and non-arab world will never agree to the existence of a Jewish State on any land it's citizens have a historical/ethnic/religious connection to. Why do you ignore Bibi's central demand of the Palestinians (and the root of the problem) that they recognize Israel as a Jewish state. Do not give me that excuse that 20% of the population in Israel is arab and that it would be racist to recognize Israel as a Jewish State. You know the so-called "right of return" really means disappearance of Israel. Admit this please.

Mr Oppenheimer,
You are right. The arrogance displayed by the current regime in Israel will most likely beget another wave of violence. We can only hope that should a third Intifada occur it ascends to a higher level where nonviolent resistance undermines all attempts to draw blood on both sides of the divide and aims at building one state for all inhabitants of this war torn area.

"instead of negotiation" implies that negotiations were possible. When negotiations broke down and Gaza was given to the Palestinians, they returned the favor by voting for Hamas; that was a declaration of war for all practical purposes. Unfortunately, peace is the result of victory, not appeasement. The last war with Egypt did not "beget another wave of violence." Intifada begins when negotiations break down, so don't negotiate. State your position strongly so negotiations not even start. If you wave candy in front of a child, you have to give the candy to him or he will become angry.

Opi, I sincerely hope you are right that "Netanyahu was and remains a right-wing leader committed to an outlook supportive of the 'Greater Israel' solution". Thanks for lifting me from my dejected mood.
