Building Bridges: Israeli society more cruel than ever Posted by Yariv Oppenheimer
Comments: 133
Despite the heavy blow dealt to Hamas by the IDF, the improvement of the security situation in the South and the lower-than-expected number of casualties during combat, something very bad happened to Israeli society during the 22-day offensive in Gaza - dubbed Operation Cast Lead. On the ethical and moral front, the war in Gaza exposed the many weaknesses of Israeli society. 650 innocent Palestinians, including 220 children, were killed and no one spoke up. If the murders in the Sabra and Shatila camps during the Lebanon War brought hundreds of people to demonstrate in Israel's city squares and induced shock and disgust within Israeli society, decades later when a similar number of innocent Palestinians have been killed, no one protested and no one took to the squares. Everyone was too busy being washed away in the wave of patriotism that overtook the country. I also agree that the war in Gaza was a defensive war whose goal was to bring some peace and quiet to Israel's turbulent borders. In wars, innocent people get killed, especially in a confrontation with terrorist groups who are active in civilian areas. But the war against Hamas, as justified as it is, was not carte blanche to retaliate against masses of people - children and whole families who were trapped in Gaza with nowhere to go. As one of the lessons learned during the Second Lebanon War, the IDF decided to use unprecedented force in Gaza, even in such a populated and crowded battlefield where many would die as a result. It was the Lt. Commander of the Givati Brigade who reported from the field that ever since his debut in the IDF, long ago, he did not remember such massive force being used during a war. In other words, the Lt. Commander admitted that in all of Israel's wars and operations in which he participated, the IDF's fingers have never been so light on the trigger. Another lesson from the Second Lebanon War brought Israel to prevent foreign and Israeli journalists from entering the Strip. When it was China who did such a thing in its conflict with Tibet, the Israeli media depicted China as a dictatorial state that tries to hide the reality from the world. In the current war, the Israeli military censor made a sensational comeback and the media, instead of rebelling against the limitations set by the IDF Spokesperson's office, played along. The reports that did make it out of Gaza were brushed aside and dismissed with the words: the world will not like these pictures. The killing of innocents had become a PR problem only and Israelis living in Israel had no right to be outraged, to ask questions, and to demand an explanation from the political and military echelons. There is no objection to the fact that the Israeli media must give priority to its own casualties but its omission of the pictures of destruction and devastation from the other side constituted a deliberate blinding of Israeli society and presented a warped image of the reality on the ground. In more peaceful periods, when there are no dilemmas and the tanks are silent, it is easy to portray Israeli society as a moral, ethical and democratic. But the moment of truth comes with war when the true face of society is revealed and when its ability to stand firm in the face of dilemmas concerning the use of weapons and the preservation of innocent lives is put to the test. In this justified war with Hamas, Israeli society suffered a resounding defeat and has become more unfeeling, self-absorbed and cruel than ever.

Please do a favor for Israel and the jews in the world and leave our unique jewish country!

Thank you for your voice of compassion and sanity. There are too many bloodthirsty voices coming out of Israel these days, something that has led to worldwide protests against the nation. The only way forward is to empathize with each other and to remove the rose colored spectacles we have all been wearing for too long. HAting the rest of the world for disagreeing is just not an option Israel has any longer.

I think the most disturbing part of the Gaza war, quite apart from the suffering of civilians in Gaza, was the Israeli publics lack of sympathy or remorse. I think this is whats inciting hatred of Israel - the fact that ordinary Israelis dont seem to give a damn. Even after the USA lost 3000 people on September 11th many Americans became disgusted by their own governments actions. Despite Abu Ghraib, Guantanamo Bay and world opinion the USA emerged as a decent and moral society. Al Qaeda failed.

Israel was cruel to the Arabs when it followed Peace Now's advice and allowed Arafat to take control. Israel was cruel to the Arabs when it left Gaza and expelled its own citizens. But, it is outrageous for European Union funded Peace Now to call Israel cruel in a defensive war to protect itself.

I understand that the following comment will sound un-rational and full of anger and therefore i will be mistaken for a right wing maniac; but the reality is that the truth is sometimes mean, cruel and most of the time we don't like to ear it.
If the israeli-palestinian conflict had taken place 200 years ago israel would have used his superior military power to crush it's enemys right from the start and to create a buffer zone to protect it's borders. They would have been able to do this because they would have not been interrupted by utopistic ideas of peace, by other countries.

Were you and your friends so vocal about innocents being targeted and killed by homicide bombs on Israeli buses and pizza restaurants?

What would make it better, Yair: The Hamas kills an equal amount of Jews. Where was your outrage 8000 missiles ago (which, miraculously have not massacred scores , if not hundreds of Jews). You're a traitor, and that's why no one is marching to your tune. Peace now is bankrupt.

Therefore protesting because the Israeli population does not raise it's voice when palestinian civilians die in conflict in Gaza, shows lack of intelligence, dear Yariv. Wake up from your dream world of roses and intellectual discussions in front of a cappuccino. This is the real world! Those civilians are mothers, sisters, brothers andfathers of the bad guys that are trying to kill YOU and every other Israeli, and the fact that you are free to write, breathe and talk is because the IDF has been doing this for the last 60 years. I suggest you get more field experience before you makeyour judgmet public.

As a non Jew all I can say is that maybe you would prefer for Isreal to just stand down and wait to see how innocent and peaceful Hamas, Iran, Syria, Hezzbola, and any and all Jew haters will be. I wish my US governement would let Isreal take the gloves off and wipe out any and all entities that wish to destroy Isreal.

"He who is meek to the cruel will end up having been cruel to the meek."
and
"Sow the wind, reap the whirlwind."
Aside from the fact that I seriously doubt the casualty figures you name:
With an enemy that cynically used civilians as human shields and explicitly targets innocent civilians (thank G-d they're not as competent at it as in their dreams) one cannot fight by Marquess of Queensbery rules. Letting this fester until Israel literally has its back against the wall would merely trade hundreds of casualties now for (G-d forbid) tens of thousands later.

Jews do not hate the rest of the world. We favor/love democracies. Our doctors/ hospitals treat injured Arabs for free but get curses instead od gratitude, that after we saving their lives. Millions of Jews were killed worldwide in all ages incl. by Muslims. But no Jew can use that as an excuse to go around suicide-bombing, killing/maiming and emasculating bodies as done recently in Mumbai to killed Jews at Chabad House. It is time for Muslims accept that all of us have right to this Earth and cure the sick jihadist element trait in their culture, demanding conversion to Allah or death.

Tell me, Yariv, when Hamas states that Israel must go, all jews must die, and they will fight to the last woman and child, and Jews are the sons of pigs and apes, what part of that don't you understand? And look who supports you - someone from Pakistan, of all places. Your opinions ceased being relevant about 6,000 rockets ago. Go get a day job and do something constructive for Israel. You can start by closing your computer.

Mr Oppenheimer, your romantic views are as good as yesterday's paper. You put on us all the responsibility to play the civilized, while we are not talking about people with the same values. Golda Meir said, we cannot forgive the Arabs by forcing us to kill their children. There can only be peace with them when they will love them more than hate us. Jews live peacefully with Arabs elsewhere, as in Brasil, simply because here they respect democracy. Let them stop their shooting/exploding-n-killing people games first. Anything else is naiveness, romantism but at the cost of our lives.

I do not believe that Israel can refrain from counterstriking when terrorist killers use innocents as human shields. The best that can be done (sadly) is to try to be a "surgical" and precise as possible. In this regard, Israel has done a commendable job.
You are not unique in your expression of regret for the loss of civilian lives. Many Jews in Israel and the United States have, in fact, expressed opposition to the war and/or the methods used. I do not think that the majority of Israeli society is cruel. But the majority recognize, correctly, that the terrorists must be stopped.

Onesidedness against onesidedness in PR has worked just fine this conflict. But why surpass all the limitations taken and genuine efforts to minimalize casualties (not having numerous journalists on the spot may be viewed as one of them) on all sides and on top of that no mentioning of aid efforts? Leaving those out of the picture makes it cruel.Sometimes people are their own worst enemies. By mentioning once this was a just war you shine your light in your own eyes. With blinding effects so it seems. Not one sane person is glad over casualties. But we do ponder necessities.

Do you write the same way you did right now against the israeli society, when a pakistani, iraki, sunni, shia or any other moslem blows himself up in the middle of a market, school, mosque, or hotel, and the islamic societies do not even bother to aknoledge that something happened? Or it is just what Israel does that bothers you?

I don't think Israelis realize how much international support they have lost during this war against Gaza. It is becoming very commun to hear and to read that Israel has become a "Monster" that needs to be stopped. Israel won all his wars, but never won peace... this should make you think.

WHY IS THERE ALWAYS A DOUBLE STANDARD WHEN THE WORLD LOOKS AT ISRAELI ACTIONS ? IS NOT THE UNFETTERED SHOWER OF MISSILES FROM MIDST OF CIVILIAN LOCATIONS, MOSQUES AND HOSPITALS A TERRORIST ACT WHICH JUSTIFIES A RESPONSE? THOSE WHO HIDE BEHIND THE SKIRTS OF WOMEN AND CHILDREN ARE COWARDS AND IT IS THEIR ACTIONS WHICH ARE CRIMINAL.ANY OTHER SOCIETY WOULD RESPOND WITH ENORMOUS FORCE TO PROTECT ITS CITIZENS WITHOUT THE WORLD CALLING THE RESPONSE "DISPROPORTIONAL". THE FIRST MOST BASIC THING WHICHA GOVERNMENT OWES TO ITS CITIZENS IS TO PROTECT THEM.ISRAEL HAS LONG BEEN HELD TO A DOUBLE STANDARD.

How can you even compare the reaction of the Chinese army to peacefull Tibbetan protesters to Israel's response to 8 years of rockets, destroying peoples lives from a terrorist organisation who's sole exsistence is to wipe Israel and the Jewish people off the map. Don't forget they were voted in by the Palistinians. You are fical and need to wake up. Ofcourse no one likes to see innoccent people get hurt. Were you out demonstrating over the past 8 years for the people of Sterot? I think not.
Stop being such a hipocrit.

Sir thank you for not letting your sanity drown in the wave of primitive patriotism that has taken hold of Israeli citizens. Israel, like every country has a right to defend itself, but does self-defense mean killing innocent civilians and toddlers? What the Israeli citizens have to realize is that they have to listen to the 'other'' viewpoint, if only only to be good spokespersons for their own cause. I can only hope that your sane voice does not fall on deaf ears.

Daniel Barenboim.- Kol Hakavod to you!

the writer who wrote this article and his claims on israeli society were validated by some of the comments that have been posted by people. Not to mention the fact that there were numerous reports that israeli citizens were standing on their rooftops watching the bombs drop, watching buildings explode and they cheered in celebration. that is sickening and disgusting to hear. for people whose families went thru the holocaust and to have such reaction to this genocide, it is pathethic that this is how low people have become.

Oppenheimer's hand-wringing about Israel's alleged moral failure because "no one spoke up" concerning the high number of civilian casualties in Gaza is totally unwarranted. He would have had a valid point had Israelis, like so many of their enemies in the recent past, celebrated intentional civilian deaths. Israel's moral character, by opening its hospitals to treat Gaza civilians, is clearly to be admired. If Oppenheimer doesn't approve of the way Operation Cast Lead was conducted, let him make a convincing case that a "kinder, gentler " operation under his control would have been effective.

What do you mean who pays him? The EU has been sponsoring these bozos for years. You think the naively named Peace Now has any support in Israel anymore? The Left is dead and everyone supports the IDF, so Mr. Oppenheimer, a "my country always wrong " kind of man, decided to hit us with the moral angle.
I am sorry, Mr. Oppenheimer, but we know who is responsible for the deaths of Gazan civilians, Hamas is .After spending the last month in a bomb shelter bombarded by rockets and mortars, we would appreciate not to be bombarded by your self righteous bull too.

Mr Oppenhiemer..do you really understand Jewish history? 4000 yrs of killing our people and throwing them out of every country in Europe at one time. Now that we Jews fight back..and win..we should be the careing people and feel bad because our enemies now suffer after attackng Israel. Did the USA and its allies feel bad and cry when we bombed the hell out of Berlin, Munich, Tokyo and Hiroshima? Or were those bombs "smart enough" not to kill any women or children? We Jews are judged to be evil by our enemies, but we should be more benevilent by our friends!? God help us!

Yariv, you are wrong in saying that no one spoke up. The Israel media had many people who spoke against the war (e.g. have you read the exchanges between Gideon Levi and A.B. Yehoshua in Haaretz?). I think, Yariv, that your problem is that you believe that not enough spoke up. But the reason is that there were not many who shared your views. The majority of Israelis felt that the war in Gaza was justified. No one rejoiced at seeing civilian casualties, and you have no basis for implying that the IDF purposefully targeted civilians - unless you know something that we don't. Tell us if you do!

"The Muslims can fight and lose, then come back and fight again. But Israel can only lose once." These words of Golda Meir are as true today and they were when Israel was a young country. Where is the uprising of the Arab countries rising up and marching against Hamas for putting their population in such dire circumstances. What happened to civilians was horrible, tragic, but there were no bomb shelters to go to, no consideration given to the fact that Hamas brought its weaponry to the homes, streets, hospitals, schools, and next to the UN building, knowing it put the people in jeopardy.

Cruel is being so insensitive to realities that the writer would take fresh statistics from an enemy that has a horrible track record when it comes to factual representations and presenting these non facts in condemnation of his own country. Cruel is serving the PR needs of a peoples who support the suicide bombing death cult that is Hamas. Keep feeding the propoganda that inspires the cradle to grave brain whashers. I know a different Israel. A compassionate one which maintains it's humanity while fighting for survival generation after generation.
