Building Bridges: House demolitions play into the hands of terrorists

The blood boils, the stomach clenches at the sight of Efrat Onterman, the baby who in an instant became an orphan on Wednesday. The images of the bulldozer attack in Jerusalem last week were as shocking and terrifying as the ones that emerged from the Mercaz Harav shooting attack in March 2008 and likewise, lit the fire for revenge and the basic desire to deliver a response that would hurt twice as much. These sentiments gripped the public almost completely. Even before the final death count was announced, right-wing spokespersons began to call for the demolition of the terrorist's house in east Jerusalem, so as to make an example of.

Leaders' roles involve being attentive to the public's sentiments but to make decisions based on the interests of the State of Israel. In their support for the demolition of the terrorist's family house, Prime Minister [Ehud] Olmert and [Defense Minister Ehud] Barak were drawn into the mass rage with little difficulty.

In 2005, it was then-defense minister Shaul Mofaz and then-chief of staff Moshe (Bogie) Ya'alon who made the right decision in accepting the recommendations of the special committee headed by Udi Shani which asserted that home demolitions for deterrent purposes were ineffective.

The IDF then ruled that destroying a terrorist's home and punishing his family does not create an effective deterrent against someone who is deadset on attacking Jews and prepared to do so while paying for it with his life.

According to the committee's findings, demolishing the family home leads to a dramatic change in world public opinion in which the terrorist and his family are then portrayed as victims of the Israeli occupation. However, it is not just shifting international opinion and denouncements of Israel that should concern us, the demolitions also lead to the unification of the Arab world around the terrorist and his family who are then supported publicly and financially.

If members of the terrorist's family were to have prior knowledge of his intentions and if someone was there to aid him in carrying out his act, such persons should stand trial and be judged according to the rule of law. Alternatively, the state should not be drawn into the revenge cycle and should not punish innocents who have no ties to such horrid acts. Punishing innocents, even if their relatives committed terrorist activities, does not contribute to the war on terror and in fact weakens Israel's political and moral stance in the face of its enemies.

Nevertheless, if the political and legal systems choose to remain captives of the likes of Ben Gvir and Marzel and order terrorists' homes demolished, the list must include the houses of Jewish terrorists as well. If this rationale is to be followed, the homes of Yigal Amir, Ami Poper, Baruch Goldstein, Eden Natan-Zada and Yanai Lalaze and their families' must also be destroyed.

The latter was a Border policeman convicted of the murder of a 17-year-old Palestinian whom he had picked up in his jeep outside Hebron, beaten severely and thrown out of the vehicle at top speed. In this case, where a Jew committed the murder of a Palestinian, the proper "deterrent", as decided by the court, was a total of 6 and a half years imprisonment.

Good grief are you that niave, bubbie? The world blames Jews for breathing! Demolishing a house is not changing the world's opinion. It is not changing the BBC, CNN or Guardian's headlines. Grow up already...Isn't it ironic that you name ALL of the Jewish terrorists in a single sentence while there asre literally hundreds of Palestinian terrorists? That murder your own brethren? Ths doesn't occur to you? I'll tell you why....yenims - a Yiddish word meaning others ...You, Mr. Oppenheimer are the most dangerous of Jews. You would rather be accepted by them than by your own. Disgraceful!

I agree. As a nation we need a long term strategy for peace, rather than just demolishing houses (which is a short term strategy which achieves nothing). For example, We need to change Moslem and Jewish preconcieved ideas of each other (stereotypes) , we need to change education so that Jewish and Moslem children receive the same material, we need to address people's complaints properly so that there is no bitterness festering on each side, we need to manage the midia as to stop printing inflamatory material which just increase the conflict, etc

Are you the only sane man in Israel. Injustice breeds injustice. It takes restraint to get restraint and the courage and intelligence to set an example. Do you have it? Can you find a way out of this couldron of hate.

You thought departure from gaza in 2005 meant no more terror from there. Sharon thought so and the peace camp thought so. News flash: 10,000 terrorist missiles later, dozens of gruesome shrapnel deaths to babies and toddlers, we have no peace. When you make Israel 8 miles wide from the Sea to Tulkarm, Umm el fahm, and Samaria who are you kidding? If you want peace move to Saudi Arabia im sure theyll give you peace. oops, wait you wont be allowed in -because youre a Jew. The point is you are brazenly, dangerously naive about Islam & how much the religion interesects with arab nationalism.

Demolishing a house what is that, they take all their belongings out and start anew with money from Saudi Arabia, the Arabs started seven wars and initiated tens of thousands of terrorist attacks totaling about twenty thousand plus Jewish dead, based upon Israel demolishing the homes of their sons and daughters murderers, get real, you will never see the Jewish Israel side because you are a radical revolutionary who sees to upset the miserable gains the Jewish people have made in having their own country, you were educated by the anti zionist sick formulations of Martin Buber, you're a waste.

Dan, you sound like a Texan. Two wrongs do not make a right. Look at the Irish Troubles, look at Ghandi's non-violent revolution. It was only by moving away from violence that peaceful goals where met. The only way to stop someone resisting you if you are unjust is to crush them, destroy them, completely. Do you advocate such genocide? The state of Israel has been suckled on violence against others, until that pattern changes, the present will not. Alexander the Great married his men to his subject peoples & bound them by blood. Love thy neighbour

Indeed, house demolitions play into the hands of terorists, just look at the ruins Gush Katif, which have further emboldened and empowered Hamas in its jihad against Jews! Nice job, Peace Now.

Yariv. True, house demolitions don't stop terrorism. Giving the Palestinians territory - as we did with Gaza - doesn't stop terrorism either. We talk of establishing a Palestinian state. There's very little likelihood that that will stop terrorism. The declared aim of the Palestinians, the reason for constructing a Palestinian people remains the same as detailed in the unchanged PLO and Hamas Charters and it's realised by terrorism and not by peace. We would have to be very stupid not to believe what they tell us so clearly.

About Ghandi's non-violent revolution. A small minority of British ruled a vast ocean of native Indians, with the assistance of native soldiers and civil servants. British Raj could not function without natives' cooperation. Ghandi didn't need to be violent, all that was needed to destroy British rule was noncooperation, which is what he advocated. In his situation it was a sound strategy, with additional propaganda benefit of appearing a non violent saint. Arab-Israeli conflict bears no resemblance to Ghandi's problem, so his solution here is not applicable.

of course demolishing a family home causes resentment and hatred amongst all those affected. just think how you would feel if your house and possessions were stripped from you - desperate, mad with anger and any youngster (teenagers being more hotheaded and hotblooded than their elders) would want to go out and seek vengeance - and the terrible cycle of violence continues. How can Jews sink to such acts of voilence - it is time to look outside of "the box" and seek a different way out of the quagmire. violence will never be the answer. shabbat SHALOM

".Injustice breeds injustice. It takes restraint to get restraint and the courage and intelligence to set an example. " ====== WRONG! Ehud Barak and Bill Clinton offered Arafat all of Gaza (Which Hamas controls now anywayz), 97% of west bank, 3-5% of Israel proper, 100% of East Jerusalem. ARafat saw this as a sign of WEAKNESS, stopped negotiating and started planning the second intifadah (Bargouti has admitted this). It's weakness that entices Arabs to kill Jews. Israel left all of Gaza years ago. The result? 4000 rockets fired from Gaza while the IDF does nothing. Restraint? Right.

One of the last hurdles for the transition from militant to Shaheed is the concern for the welfare of the family and the loss of possibly the main bread winner. This is overcome by the assurance that the family is provided for .This takes the form of a lump sum payment usually somewhere between $20-30,000 with monthly payments thereafter. These funds are paid through Hamas channels but no doubt are indirectly paid by EU and world monetary funds which are supposed to be used for regeneration of the Palestinian economy.Demolition of the terrorist home insures the family is no better off.

I agree, instead of house demolitions, transfer to Arab Palestine, aka Jordan, would be more useful as a deterrent. Western Palestine, including the "West Bank" was designated as Jewish Palestine by the League of Nations. No Jew is allowed to reside in Arab Palestine. Why the double standard ?

Demolition is wrong. Transfer the Arabs to Jordan. They are Jordanians anyway. There will be no need for demolition thereafter.

Yariv and his ilk play into the hands of terrorists. Corrected. Yariv, who may or may not be old enough to remember "peace in our time" just doesnt get it. Its not about demolishing the guys house - its about demoralizing and dejecting the enemy - plain and simple. Is Yariv up in arms about Kuntar being let go after bashing a Jewish childs head with a rifle butt ? No. The Florence Nightengale syndrome runs deep with Yariv and the wacko left - love the enemy - hate your own. When the arabs appologize for 5 wars, pay reparations, return all Jewish holy sites - we wont have to demolish homes.

Some people are saying that we need to transfer the Arabs to Jordan; may I ask these people, how on earth are they thinking that they can achieve this? Such an action would create even more ill feelings amongst the Palestinians, those living in this land and those in the territories not to metion the whole of the Middle East! What we need to aim is to reduce the ill-feelings amongst different ethnic groups in this country, rather than aggravating them further!!!

Steve, Brisbane: I must agree with all these comments. Yariv, become a serious student of History-please. We make peace not with our enemies but with our vanquished foes (to quote another Jpost contributor). To call Abbas someone who really wants to make peace is wearing rose coloured spectacles. I am absolutely mind -boggled that someone as intelligent as you can seriously make statements such as you did in your article.
