At its convention in Bethlehem this week, Fatah refused to recognize Israel as a Jewish state or adopt Hebrew as its official language, and didn't conclude with a rendition of HaTikva (Israel's national anthem). What a disappointment, what a blow to the champions of peace.

The Palestinians remain unchanged; an oppressed and harried people desiring independence alongside Israel without having to recognize or uphold Zionist ideals or the principles of the Jewish state. Those hoping the Palestinians were on the verge of joining the World Zionist Organization and pledging allegiance to the State of Israel may be disappointed, but realists willing to take an honest look at the Bethlehem convention will have seen positive and unprecedented indications of new Palestinian willingness to make peace with Israel and drop the demand for the right of return.

It isn't easy being a member of Fatah in Palestinian society; after years of occupation, increasing settler numbers and the building of the separation wall deep inside Palestinian territory, and in the face of rising violent religious extremism from Hamas, Hizbullah and Iran, Fatah continues to advocate non-violent resistance. Belonging to Fatah is sometimes worse, in the eyes of Palestinians, than being left-wing is to some Israelis.

Fatah, which is perceived as a secular, rational organization, for some reason still believes that negotiations and peace talks can lead to real results. Israel, on the other hand, has shown no great willingness to cooperate with the Palestinians on such issues as settlements, the route of the separation wall, or the release of Palestinian prisoners.

Indeed, Netanyahu and his ministers continue to insist the status of Jerusalem is non-negotiable, and their best offer to the Palestinians is "The Demilitarized Palestinian State"; autonomy over a collection of demilitarized cantons in the West Bank.

The failure of negotiations to yield any tangible results has weakened the standing of Palestinian moderates, who are perceived by many as being too soft and unrealistic to lead their people anywhere but into unending occupation.

Regarding Israel's Jewish identity, Palestinians ask to be allowed to recognize the State of Israel alongside and independent Palestinian state, but are unwilling to turn their backs on their brethren, the Arab minority living within the Green Line as Israeli citizens. Thus, Palestinians prefer not to get involved with the subject of Israel's internal definition of its character, customs and identity. But those who wish to doom negotiations will continue to demand recognition of Israel as a Jewish state, something Palestinians can't and shouldn't need to give.

The Fatah convention in Bethlehem is not a gathering of collaborators or Israel lovers, but rather of the leaders of the Palestinian national struggle who believe that peace with Israel is possible and necessary, and that the secular, moderate Palestinian liberation movement is the one that will lead the Palestinian people to independence. Better to face reality and exhaust all possible avenues to reach an agreement now with a moderate, pragmatic Palestinian leadership than to wait until it is replaced by fanatic religious extremists who believe in violent jihad.

Interesting that Oppenheimer did not provide even one fact for his optimistic view of the Fatah conference, even when he could have used links within his article. On the other hand, we hear reports straight from Abbas and other senior Fatah leaders mouths about a possible return to violence, calling Haifa and Jaffa occupied and now that Arafat was killed by Israel. Fatah has not shown one ounce of compromise, still have elements within that do not recognise even the Israeli state, produce terrorism and mimic Hamas in just about every other way.

What is it with that guy..doesn't he listen to his Arab friends? They screem their longs out proclaiming that a 2 state solution is only a first temporary step towards their dream of that other Arab state (instead of Israel). They say they will never recognize a Jewish state etc.. Oppenheimer baby, Israel's so called occupation is the best thing that ever happen to them..we took them from the middle ages in one sweep into the 20th. century. I saw Judea, Samaria and Gaza in 1967 and their ever growing progress ever since until Oppenheimer's idol "Hara-Fat" took over in 1993.

I find this whole "Jewish State" thing quite amusing. What if suddenly a member state of the UN decided to adopt Jedi as its country's main religion? Would the world be in an uproar? Why does Israel care so much what the Arabs call her? Call yourselves whatever you want, the Arab world will still recognise an Israel after a comprhensive peace deal. Whether you want ito be Jewish or secular, that's your problem, not ours!
4  |   DAAT Y, Thursday Aug 06, 2009
Fatah accuses Israel of killing Arafat -but this is insignificant to Oppenheimer.Israel needs to be recognized as a Jewish, democratic state or as Begin states it will be a TWO STAGE solution to the Jewish Problem.iF OPPENHEIMER CANNOT SEE THIS HE IS IIN DENIAL OF REALITY.
5  |   Marcel, Thursday Aug 06, 2009
No Surprise, Fatah has already joined Peace Now. They are the mouthpiece for Fatah inside the Jewish community. They work together in tandem for the same goal of Israel's destruction by way of the fake peace agenda. When Israel has used up all of her appeasment, goodwill gestures, capitulation then the fifth column Oppenheimer storm troopers and Fatah will finish their agenda of Israel's exterminationl.
6  |   A.Sokolow, Davis, California, Thursday Aug 06, 2009
Totally out of touch with reality. Does he really hear what the leaders of Fatah are saying? What is he smoking?
7  |   Tod Zuckerman, Thursday Aug 06, 2009
Oppenheimer is amazing - he excuses everything the Palestinians say and do . Alsd, , even though they state CLEARLY and REPEATEDLY that they intend to liquidate every inch of the Jewish state , he still persists that Israel is to blame for the fact that there is no peace agreement. Is there a genetic deficiency involved ? I think so - just think medical researchers could have begun studying this if Madoff had not defrauded so many Jewish charities.

This is so Israeli! The exaggeration. The condescension. This is why these ignoramuses always become secular leftists. They like the way that leftists always talk down to others as if they have all the answers and everybody else is a moron. However, in every election, the leftists see that they have no support in the country. So they concoct ways to steal power, for example, by seizing the supreme court justice selection process or by forcing funding only for anti-Israel films. They hide behind NGOs because they cannot win democratically.
9  |   Chaim - Israel, Thursday Aug 06, 2009
There are only two meaningful issues regarding Pieces Now. 1) Who is funding their attacks on Israel? 2) Are they passing photos and other information about our communities to our enemies? Their defense of Fatah, which proclaims in it's covenant and on PA TV every day that it's goal is to destroy Israeli, is beneath contempt. It's time Pieces Now was subject to appropriate criminal investigations.
10  |   Arnold - Canada, Thursday Aug 06, 2009
Oppenheimer is dishonest. Abbas told the conference that he maintains his position re 'right of return'. Abbas & the PA have repeatedly & consistently declared that they won't compromise on this, which means that they don't want peace with Israel, but are intent on destroying Israel. Fatah murdered hundreds of Jews from 2000 on. They led the intifada, that murdered over 1,000. Arafat in 2000-1, Abbas last year, rejected Israel's offers of a peace agreement. Oppenheimer really deserves a prize, as a champion idiot.

Two nation-states between the Mediterraean and the Jordan is not feasible. Therefore Israel has two options towards Samaria,, Gaza, and Judea. 1. Egypt anexes the gaza strip and Israel and Jordan split Samaria and Judea 50-50. The arabs on the Israeli side will be deported to Jordan and the Jews on the Israeli side will be deported to Israel and that be the end of it. Jordan knows if a 24th arab country emeges in Judea and Samaria then it will be taken over by Hamas and King Abdullah's dictatorship will be threatened. Its either this or 2. the transfer of the entire arab population to Jordan.
12  |   Herbert Kaine, Hebron, Israel, Friday Aug 07, 2009
Surprise, Oppenheimer isnt joining the WZO either. He is just parroting stale formulas. Who funds him anyhow-that is the real story. Probably the FOrd FOundation, SOros, EU NGOs and other ill wishers for Israel

Must be tough goining for Fatah terrorists these days, and Opi is crying them a river (LMAO). At its convention in Bethlehem this week, Fatah refused to recognize Israel as a Jewish state (No kidding) didnt admit that the Jews were there first, & proclaimed that starting 5 wars wasnt enough, they concluded with the absurd notion that Arafart was killed by "the Jews". After years of falsely claiming "occupation", watching the increase of Jewish numbers and the building of the separation wall which keeps arab terrorists out , they havent gained ANYTHING .. which angers Opi. Everyone ... awwwww!

Building Bridges isfine, however I hope this time the "builder(s)" will be the one to stand under the bridge they built (and get the bits and pieces on their heads as it collapses),contrary to standing aside and pushing the average Israelis to be hit, as they did with the bridge they built in Oslo. This is the kind of Israeli that would feel sorry if the Fatah respected Israeli self determination. To stay in the business of "building so-called- bridges into futility" Openheimer and his likes need a rabid, unruly, unrelenting and murderous Fatah on the other side.

Vatican and Italy are catholic states with a catholic constitution. Most of EU countries are christian states with a christian constitution. All arab and muslim states are strictly called islamic states, i.e., republics, or kingdoms. So where is the problem that Israel is a jewish state without explicitely declaring it. Its a historical fact, SINCE OVER 3000 YEARS. If the Palis are unhappy with a Palestine, let them complain with Rome. It was the Romans who made up a province Palestina from original Israel and Yehudah.
16  |   Eli, Kiryat Ono, Israel, Friday Aug 07, 2009
SURPRISE - OPPENHEIMER CANNOT SEE THE OBVIOUS! Nobody thinks or expects that the PA should be a faction of the ZOA. But the decisions in their last convention clearly mean the destruction of Israel as the homeland of the Jews and its transformation to another Arabic country, which is what they are after. Blaming Israel for Arafat's death and nominating a board of inquiry after they have made a decision is a futile attempt to hide the PA's total impotence in true leadership of their people. Thus the Palestinians are missing another opportunity, in which they have become experts.
17  |   sam gorin, New york city NY, Friday Aug 07, 2009
SUPRISE! The Jewish people arent joining PLO/Fatah ! And the left was SO sure it was going to happen. After BO & his appology to the arab world, after the ignoring of Israel on BO's ME trip, after the supposed scolding of Israel for wanting to live in their own capitol, & for the admitions of Fatah itself visa via Israel, nothing happened. The right aka the "settlers and thier criminal accomplises from NY" (as Oppenhimer calls them) didnt bow to BO, nor give up 2500 yrs of history, and didnt abandon thier dreams and religion. PEACE not PIECE, and TRUTH vs LIES ..Does BO know the difference ?

Yariv Oppenheimer prefers to stick his head in the sand and mourn the naqbah instead of facing the facts: from the moment the US and/or Israel will bomb Iran, there will be a third intifada. Will Oppenheimer even then promote the rights of the pals? It strikes me as pure self-hatred that pseudo-liberals such as Oppenheimer prefer to ignore the causes of the conflict in the Middle East: the arabs/muslims will NEVER accept the Jews' presence in the area. They proved this in 1948, 1956, 1973 and during two intifadas and two wars with Lebanon. Why don't you move to Gaza with your friends?
19  |   Stan Goodman - Israel, Friday Aug 07, 2009
When wishful thinking is recognized as an Olympic sport, Mr Oppenheimer will win the gold. He needs to read the press coverage of the Bethlehem conference to learn what Fatah is actually saying and doing. As ignorant has he is, however, #2 Said has gone him one better in his example of the hypothetical Jedi religious state. Our demand, Said, is for recognition as the state of the Jewish PEOPLE, i.e. an ethnic group, not as coreligionists. That said, however, I wonder if he is equally dismissive of Palestine, which defines itself as a Muslim "state". Islam is a religious, not ethnic, grouping.
20  |   Sharona Israel, Saturday Aug 08, 2009
UN RES 181 called for the establishment of a Jewish state and an Arab state. If the Palis can't accept that then all further UN RES on this issue are null and void. There is no Palistinian territory-only disputed territory. Armistice lines are not borders. There is no such thing as a moderate Pali leadership. They are ALL terrorists, all call for the destruction of Israel, all say they will never recognize Israel period. Fatah said ARMED resistance will continue. How is that non-violence? But never confuse the lefties with the facts. It won't change their minds.
21  |   Elen, Saturday Aug 08, 2009
Surprise - Yariv Oppenheimer is cretin.
22  |   Chris USA, Saturday Aug 08, 2009
What do you expect from this George Sorros clone?
23  |   Chris USA, Saturday Aug 08, 2009
It's people like you that give Peace Now such a bad name. Your goals are admirable but your methods leave much to be desired. If "The Palestinians remain unchanged; an oppressed and harried people desiring independence " it is by their own hand not Israel's. If "Fatah continues to advocate non-violent resistance. " it is merely legislative terrorism. "The Fatah convention in Bethlehem ..." is exclusively hardline oldtimers who have embraced nazi ideology as arab supremacy seeing themselves as the new master race.
24  |   Max- Nathanya, Saturday Aug 08, 2009
Mr. Oppenheimer is distroying the zionist dream, instead ,as he claimt,"laying out his visions on how to fulfill the Zionist dream.". Further more, Peace Now is funded bij the same people who want to destroy the Jewishstate. Problebly he is one of the reservesoldiers recruted by Al-Jazeera to tell their lies about the invasion in Gaza..Get the facts strait Mr. Oppenheimer next time, now SHAME ON YOU.

Jabotinsky, come back!
26  |   TO SAID #3; from Robert in Israel, Saturday Aug 08, 2009
If recognizing Israel as a Jewish state is so trivial, why are Israel's "peace partners" so adamant about NOT doing so?? The answer is obvious...
27  |   Jeff - Israel, Saturday Aug 08, 2009
Surprise. The "Palestinians" want all of Jerusalem now! Oh that isn't a surprise; they actually want all of Israel. Now if only Mr. Oppenheimer and his plainly deluded friends in Peace Now (er maybe that should be Peace Never) would only learn to listen to what is being said to them that would be a step in the right direction. Then there would be no need for such terrinly informed blogs.
28  |   Robbie NYC, Sunday Aug 09, 2009
Oppenheimer wouldn't see a moth that landed on the tip of his nose. He is naive beyond belief! Why is his drivel even in the Jerusalem Post?
29  |   Michael Dar, Sunday Aug 09, 2009
Right, Fatah didn't join the WZO, but you either . It looks more as if you joined the Fatah instead. Try to show up with something original, worth reading..you are soo boring. I don't understand why they keep paying you for your nonsense!
30  |   EW, Sunday Aug 09, 2009
It is so funny! Not ist the article is funny however, hard Mr. Oppemhemer has been trying to make it. Sorry, no talent. It is funny how genetic gift of Jews to be iindependent minds is being trasformed into being a mindless contrarians. Of course he knows that "demiilitarization " of PA is a garantee , albeit, weak of its military threats to Israel. and he knows that Jewsh State is by definition iis the state of Jews , not trinational state. He knows, intimately, that loyllty of arabs to iIsrael is much less than his loyllty to his wife . But he is independant ! Spinosa!

If Rabbi Kahana's party was – rightly – banned for its extremsim, so should be Peace Now for the same reason. Democracies need to defend themselves from their enemies. This is valid for any democracy, and emphatically so for one under siege.
34  |   David Asher, Sunday Aug 09, 2009
mr. oppenheimer is a clown. his name always stikes me as a synonym for 'abominable'... Please shut up and leave town. Go to Gaza.
35  |   Empress Trudy, Sunday Aug 09, 2009
So in other words just because they didn't kill you today but claim that killing you tomorrow or eventually is really their sole aim and objective doesn't mean they mean what they say nor are they an actual threat.
36  |   TrailBlazer, Norway, Monday Aug 10, 2009
As a Norwegian I have been feeling grief and SHAME about the Oslo failure for more than 10 years now - after the chief negotiater behind the Oslo channel Terje Rød Larsen officially admitted that he knew that murder Arafat "lied all the time"; and the two left wing championers Rabin and Peres accepted the "Peace Prize" together with such a character. While people of such convictions, like this Oppenheimer, (has he held any responsible pos. in society ?..like reserved for Mr. Peres..) still do not realise the true obsession on the Arab side, it's hard to see what might convince such people.
37  |   Shel Zahav, Monday Aug 10, 2009
Reply to #3. The issue is not at all what the state is called, Jewish or otherwise. The Arabs refuse to acknowledge that there can be a non-Islamic, hegemonic entity in the Middle East. They say that any treaty with the State of Israel is a temporary acknowledgement of facts on the ground. They cannot bring themselves to make peace with a non-Islamic state and thus will not say the magic words "Jewish state". Islam cannot allow another people to have hegemeny in their conquered and occupied territories and thus make false peace deals as is the way of Islam beginning with its evil founder.

Why people would fight for this god forsaken desert land is beyond me. History is full of battles to take it. Apart from now that it could (by the hand of mad men) turn into a 3rd world war. And why would palestine settle for statehood when they could be an indipendant country. Build a wall through the land and leave each other alone. BTW, the fact that Isreal threw out those palestinian families on the street a few days ago, didn't help the international community to side with Israel.

Oppenheimer you're an arrogant jerk -- the Jews are the "oppressed and harried people," not your made "Palestinians" who are no more (and no less) than Arabs under a neat, new moniker. Had the Romans not changed the name of Judea to Palestina the Jews would be facing the Judean Liberation Organization. You and you are the oppressor! Yes, you are a jerk AND a moron AND the oppressor. You work in service of the Jews' enemy.
