Israeli cellphone giant Cellcom recently released a new commercial and, I must say, it does not leave anyone feeling indifferent: instead of a sea and sun scene, stars being born or models acting like models, Cellcom has decided to bring the security barrier smack into the middle of our lives, deep in the heart of prime-time TV as part of the backdrop to its most recent commercial broadcasted incessantly on Israeli channels.

The ad shows a group of young soldiers on patrol in an IDF jeep along the security barrier when suddenly a soccer ball falls onto their jeep. Startled, the soldiers first suspect a terror attack but after a few moments, a soldier kicks the ball over the barrier onto the Palestinian side. From here, the ad continues with the ball going back and forth over the barrier from the Palestinian to the Israeli side. The moment this ad was broadcast, the Israeli left and senior Palestinian Authority officials rose up to voice their disgust with the commercial which depicts, according to them, the barrier as a positive element around which one can play soccer and have fun. They claim that the IDF soldiers are also portrayed much more positively than is realistic and that the Palestinians themselves remain unseen over the barrier.

I admit, this is hardly a 'perfect' commercial reflecting the harsh reality of Palestinian suffering as a result of the barrier; the land grabs, the effective imprisonment of thousands of Palestinians behind a concrete wall. Nonetheless, the security barrier takes center-stage and the ad chose to address one of the most difficult topics in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

The initial message received from the commercial is that in contradiction to the usual perception attributed to the Palestinians, there are human beings on the other side of the barrier, human beings who also want to have fun and live normal lives. The commercial smashes the continued efforts of various Israeli sources to portray the Palestinians as a people who thrive on hate and whose only goal is the destruction of the state of Israel. In this commercial, the Palestinians are portrayed as partners in a ball game who also seek normal lives and good neighborly relations. The choice to leave the Palestinian side unseen only strengthens the notion that children, families, parents and dreams - immediately forgotten with the construction of the concrete monstrosity - exist on the other side of the wall.

Furthermore, Cellcom's depiction of the IDF soldiers as normal human beings who are not afraid to have fun playing soccer with "the enemy" is perhaps not a carbon copy of the reality on the ground but it presents a positive model for emulation. The scenes in the ad, as 'ideals', display the humanity and respect we all expect to see in IDF soldiers in their daily interaction with the Palestinian people. Even if the commercial alters only slightly the combative, firmly-established Israeli perception of seeing every Arab as as a potential enemy - Amen.

Despite the difficulty of dealing with such a loaded political subject, we must congratulate Cellcom on their courage and their will to break - even temporarily - from the usual on commercial channels and remind us of the ugly reality of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Perhaps the ad is too subtle, with too good an ending but it's been a while since we've seen such a brave display of yearning for co-existence and a strive for reconciliation between two peoples, all the doings of a private company on prime-time television.

I was pretty disgusted myself when I first saw this ad. What a lack of sensitivity. The fact that Cellcom used the wall in a commercial trivializes the Palestinians' greatest nightmare. How would people react if it was German soldiers playing outside the Warsaw Ghetto walls? The ad does not show courage on Cellcom's part, it just shows how little they even think about the Palestinian perspective.

I think that this ad, if anything, is about building bridges over the wall. In the end the announcer says "in the end, what do we all want, to have a little fun" while the soldiers are playing soccer with the people on the other side. If anything, the commercial humanizes both sides equally, the Palestinians who are not committing acts of terror like the soldiers originally thought, but playing soccer with Israeli soldiers, and the soldiers, who aren't just robots doing their jobs, they are human beings who also want to have some fun sometimes. This commercial just isnt such a big deal.

There is only a concrete wall in sections where snipers were firing into people's homes. The rest is a fence where terrorists were crossing to blow up cafes and buses. If the Palestinians spent more time tossing balls around instead of bombs and rockets the wall and fence wouldn't be there. Who is "behind" the wall? The ones attacking, or the ones being protected from attackers? Greatest nightmare? A fence, or seeing people blown to bits in front of a shopping mall as I have seen?

Oppenheimer's low intelligence parallels his lack of sense of humor: Everywhere he looks, he sees confirmation for his ideology. Mr. Oppenheimer: Wake up and smile, this is a lighthearted joke. Not some political propaganda to be analyzed!

Ron #1 Comparing the warsaw ghetto to the so called Palestine question shows where u stand. The fence was put up to protect Israelis from being murdered by the self imposed ghetto dwellers in Gaza and the west bank is rediculous. The nazis went in the ghetto to kill Jews...the palestinian terorrists attempt to go into israel to kill Jews. They are the nazis! SO #1 says it well!

Such hypocrisy! Oppenheimer pens his sympathy with the plight of Israel's deadly terrorist enemies from the safety and comfort of Israel, whom he accuses of unjustly tormenting PA Arabs. If he really feels that "the barrier; the land grabs, the effective imprisonment of thousands of Palestinians" is an inappropriate response to Arab rejection of peaceful coexistence, then fidelity to his ideals should compel Oppenheimer to live somewhere else--perhaps among the terrorism supporters in Gaza he so identifies with. But he is not honest, not in his criticism, not in following his own ideology.

A good ad that I'd think will help sales. Folks enjoy playing ball and will take a light moment to enjoy a break from the tension. No big political statement here. The Palestinians are commited to destroying the Zionist entity [which is the reason for the security fence] The Jews are obligated to try and protect their citizens even if it involves imposing hardships on many who are not actively engaged in violence. Duh! Ron number 1 is off base. The comparison to the Warsaw ghetto is obscene. If he knew life in the ghetto he'd see that life on the Arab side is Disneyland by comparison

Advertising is about getting noticed. Cellcom advertising agency would know as all do that an add gets noticed if it can entertain, be unusual, affect emotions/ lusts or - shock. I'd say at that rate Cellcom did a good job of the add- even I know who they are now! Many adds should offend those who love G-d. Most adds are 'romance' make believe, if only soccer balls came over the fence. But the fence will come down, when Israel (I don't know how I don't know when) as the prophet Ezekiel declares gains the mountains of Israel, and Israel lives there in peace without wall and gates!

In Israel we can have an ad like that. Where is a similar Palestinian ad? Israel never wanted that barrier. It was forced on us by the Palestinian culture of death and terror. Instead of building a state they concentrate on trying to destroy ours. We said no to being murdered and blown to bits. The efficacy of the barrier against suicide bombings is proven. Sorry Oppenheimer your insulting comments about Israeli soldiers don't cut it. The soldiers who violate the rules are few and far between. The barrier kills no one, it saves lives. Most Arabs today are unfortunately potential enemies.

Oppenheimer does not once address the reasons for the barrier, the unbearable suffering of the thousands of Israeli terrorist victims in Israel. It's like we built it for fun and had nothing better to do with our time or money. The Palestinians brought it on themselves. Peace Now is a subversive organization funded by extreme and shadowy European NGO's. Palestinian mothers and fathers publicly praise their suicide bomber children and the "honor killing" of "wayward" girls and women is an acceptable norm in their society. They DO thrive on hate. They even hate themselves! their own kids!

Sounds like the Israeli left and the PA leadership are objecting to the commercial because they methaphorically represent the wall as the true obstacles to peace. The people want it, it's the leadership that objects.

Typical Oppenheimer rubbish. He raills against the barrier and "Palestinian suffering" with no mention of why we have barriers and checkpoints. He'd prefer the terrorists have open season on Israelis with no dreadful barriers and checkpoints to stop them. It is way past time to prohibit loathesome organizations like Pieces Now from receiving foreign funding for their disgusting and often treasonous agenda.

I must be terribly insensitive because I love this ad. It suggests that there is always a possibility of peace and understanding between even the most hardened of enemies. It is too bad Israel has to resort to such barricades for their defense, but it is a fact of life and the fence has cut down on a huge percentage of terrorist attacks. All the Palestinian have to do is stop their attacks, and put down their arms, and there will be peace. But with Islams imperative, that won't happen until they decide peace is more important.

John Milk: Oppenheimer you're an arrogant jerk -- the Jews are the "oppressed and harried people," not your made "Palestinians" who are no more (and no less) than Arabs under a neat, new moniker. Had the Romans not changed the name of Judea to Palestina the Jews would be facing the Judean Liberation Organization. You and you are the oppressor! Yes, you are a jerk AND a moron AND the oppressor. You work in service of the Jews' enemy.
Laine Frajberg Montreal: Wonder what hallucenegenics this guy is on.My guess is that it's something very strong-probably LSD.
Scotland: Why people would fight for this god forsaken desert land is beyond me. History is full of battles to take it. Apart from now that it could (by the hand of mad men) turn into a 3rd world war. And why would palestine settle for statehood when they could be an indipendant country. Build a wall through the land and leave each other alone. BTW, the fact that Isreal threw out those palestinian families on the street a few days ago, didn't help the international community to side with Israel.
