Bibi's Blog: There is no state without Jerusalem Posted by Binyamin Netanyahu
Comments: 47
When King David established Jerusalem as his kingdom’s capital 3,000 years ago, the states that today refuse to hold their embassies here were not yet in existence. These states should know: Our bond with Jerusalem goes back millennia. This bond is written in the Bible, fortified by the tears and hopes of our long exile. In Jerusalem the kings of Israel ruled, in Jerusalem the prophets prophesized, in Jerusalem the identity and essence of the Jewish People have been forged. This bond is so strong, that even when Jerusalem was demolished and we were exiled from the city and the land, we returned to it. And when it was demolished again, the city ravaged and its name changed – we still remained faithful. The Jews have clung to Jerusalem throughout the ages and were a majority in the city already in the mid 19th Century, despite the land was that was laying in waste, abandoned by all its past conquerors. Even in the Diaspora, we did not abandon Jerusalem. No matter where they were, Jews have always crowned their prayers with the saying “next year in Jerusalem.” One cannot find similar ties between a people and a city or between a religion and a city. Catholics, for example, never say “next year in the Vatican.” There are indeed links between different religions and different cities, Jerusalem being important to other creeds as well, even if not in the same manner. We respect these links. When put to the test of history, only we, the Jews, respected those links. The Crusaders and the Muslims were competing who would conquer land from whom, who would prevent whom from exercising their authority on the holy sites of the city. Only when we regained rule of the city, we opened its gates to all faiths, promising freedom of creed. Our return to Jerusalem, always beneficial to others, was laced with bloody struggles. Someone recently mentioned to me something they had read in David Ben Gurion’s memoirs. As a boy in Plonsk, Ben Gurion saw his mother light Shabbat candles next to a picture of the Western Wall, and crying softly for Jerusalem. This, perhaps, is a very good explanation to what occurred later during the War of Independence. The battle for Jerusalem was extremely hard, and nearly a third of the fatalities, approximately 2,000 fighters, died in battles in and around Jerusalem – in Gush Etzion, Sha’ar Haguy, and the convoys. Every day dozens of fighters died and commanders told Ben Gurion “enough, we can fight any more.” Ben Gurion banged on the table, exclaiming: “This is Jerusalem! There is no state without Jerusalem!” He expressed a truth forged in each of our hearts and the heart of the Jewish collective. There is no state without Jerusalem. The first Jewish struggle for Jerusalem in the modern era was the brave departure from the confines of the city walls and the building of Mishkenot Sha’ananim. The struggle continued with each and every neighborhood, especially after the Six Day War victory. Gilo, Ramot, Pisgat Ze’ev – the international community objected to the foundation of all of these neighborhoods. As prime minister I had a modest part in the building of Jerusalem, presiding over the establishment of the neighborhood Har Homa, and of this I am proud. What fierce objection this decision faced, in the world and unfortunately, even by some members of this Knesset! But this is how Jerusalem was built and this is how it will be built in the future, stemming from the same age-old decree. On this holiday of Jerusalem we recall this decree and the words of our first prime minister: There is no state without Jerusalem. And I add: If we fail to fight for Jerusalem, we will fail fighting anywhere else! This blog originally appeared on netanyahu.org.il.

Mr. Netanyahu, This is must no longer be about politics, no longer about honor and prestige, and no longer about having a career. Once again, as has been a repeated theme throughout history, the Jewish people are in great danger. G-d almighty will for sure save us from any ensnaring trap, the only choice that you have to make in this matter is will you be the one to step up for your people, or will someone else. Just as in the Megillah, Esther made the choice to redeem her people so should you use your influence to step up for your people. The Lubavitcher Rebbe has taught us that we are all one, each and every single Jew is a vital and invaluable part of the Jewish body. We can all help affect this situation and the world situation for the good. Use your posistion to end the politics and stand up for what is right and just.....use your influence to boldly stand up for the Jewish people!

I agree with all you have saud, I just hope that when you become Prime Minister you will remember what you say. No dividing the city; it never belonged to anyone except us. There are no people called "Palestinians" it is a name adopted by Arab and other Muslims to try to control our land, given to us by G-d as an inheritance forever and ever - but only if we are true to Him. It is a shame that we do not have the same great propoganders as they have - just like the Nazis, if they repeat a lie often enough the whole world who hates Jews accept all their lies. Good luck to you.

This little anecdote about Ben Gurion is quite astonishing, though not surprising, unfortunately. So he's banging on a table saying there's not state without Jerusalem. Wasn't this the statesman who less than a year earlier had agreed to a UN partition plan where Jerusalem would not be part of a Jewish state but under the control of the UN? How could he agree to such a thing if there's no state without Jerusalem? Because this isn't a man of values, morals, or principles, but one who believes it's perfectly fine to go through the motions of saying one thing for international consumption while doing what he pleases on the ground with military force, regardless of who gets hurt or killed in the process. This is a vile human being who, unfortunately, is the embodiment of what would become of Zionism. And to think I once supported Israel.

Bibi for President! Zech 12:2-3 "I will make Jerusalem like an intoxicating drink that makes the nearby nations stagger when they send their armies to besiege Jerusalem and Judah. On that day I will make Jerusalem an immovable rock. All the nations will gather against it to try to move it, but they will only hurt themselves."

It is refreshing to find atleast one Israeli political leader who knows to whom the Holy City of Jerusalem belongs! It is time for Nations, with America in the lead, to locate their embassies in the City.

The Arabs instigated the Six Day War. Had they won their leaders would have"pushed the (3 million) Jews into the sea", as they had declared, a scant 22 years after 6 million Jews were wiped out. The Syrian and Iraqui regimes were based on Nazi ideology, and their leaders meant what they said. Arabs must bear the consequences of their premediated actions. Israel lost 2000 soldiers at the hands of Arabs to remove the Arab threat adjacent to their capital. The lives of these soldiers cannot be returned, and neither must Jerusalem. Any Israeli offers at returning parts of the West Bank is a concession for peace, and not an obligation.

I love Israel, and I'm a proud Jew. But is a wall of stones really worth fighting for? Jerusalem is an old, weathered, falling-apart city, not a modern metropolis like Tel Aviv, London or New York. Let the crazy fundamentalists have Jerusalem - who needs the trouble! Move the Western Wall stone by stone, so the dossim can still pray at it. And if the dossim want to stay in a Muslim-controlled Jerusalem at their own peril, let them. They can defend themselves. Secular Israelis living in TA should not have to spill their blood for dossim who don't work and don't serve in the army. I know this will not be a popular opinion, but we should fight the battles worth fighting. Jerusalem is Israel's past - let's look to the future!

netanyahu, you're good at fooling yourself and others, but you will not fool the Palestinians. They know better. They know their Jerusalem " AlQuds", and how important to them; and know it's connections to their faiths. I admit you have a special skills of making up stories in rewriting hostories. What a waste! I wish and pray that you use your skills to benefit the israelis and palestininas and bring peace between them, so both people can live on peace and harmony. You know very will that Jerusalem is in the heart of more than a billion and half muslims. So what to do? keep fighting and keep killing each other just because you want to portray yourself as oh netnyaho is tough man. Know you're not and the Palestinias don't care. I for one I will continue to do whatever I can to claim my land back and live in peace, dignity, and freedom like everyone else in this world. I believe in peace, liberty, and prosperity for the Palestinians and Israelis. The Israelis will not acheive any of these while people, or what so called leader like you continue to call for war against the palestininas, instead of calling for their freedom in a free homeland. Please get real and work for peace between these two people. please let's put the rethoric aside, so we can put a stop to the killing in both sides. Thank you.

Mr. Netanyahu, Thank you so much for your service and bravery. I am the great nephew of Ernest Stehlik. He was a "Machalnik" in 1948 (David Bercuson's book, The Secret Army, and Leonard Slater's book The Pleadge. I am a Christian man who has come from a Czech Jewish/Christian backgrownd. My great uncle taught my mind the history lesson of the founding of Israel. He went further to touch my heart and soul about the plight of the Czech Jewish families in WWII. To this day I celibrate Israeli indepenence on May 15. I usually watch the movies Judith, and Cast a Giant Shadow. Your wonderful blog on, "No state without Jerusalem" has touched me deeply. Thank you for reminding us all of Mr. Ben Gurion's passion and insistance of the survival of Jerusalem. Let "Next year in Jerusalem" remain on the lips and in the hearts of all who Love and believe in Israel, forever the Jewish homeland, and forever the State of the Jewish peoples. Thank you. God Bless and Shalom. John Gateley

Wake up and smell the gunpowder. Israel will stand united with or without world opinion. Israel can not afford to lose 1 major war. The day that major war will be lost, so to shall Israel. United Israel will stand. Divided Israel will fall and that goes for Jerusalem.

At the entrance to the Knesset via its parking lot there is a golden copy of the Menorah depicted on the Titus Victory Arch in Rome. Hopefully, members of the Knesset look upon it, and are reminded of their historic responsibility to lead and preserve the only home for the Jews. If we lose Jerusalem this time, we ourselves will be to blame.

The Bible says that Jerusalem is the City of the Great King. God has given it to His chosen people, the Jews, to dwell there and to keep holy. Israel, you have bought it back again with your blood. Never even think of dividing it again. I pray for the peace of Jerusalem and Israel.

You don't have to be Jewish to know Jerusalem belongs to the Israeli people. Christians know it too and support your national efforts to keep it as your capital. Bibi is the only, current Israeli official that I support. Hopefully, his past experiences have taught him many lessons. Sadly, I believe US Presidents may have twisted the arms of your PMs to advance the Land for Peace deals. Will any of us ever learn?

I agree wholeheartedly with the position that Jerusalem belongs with Israel, and that Jerusalem is the real capital of the State of Israel. I believe that the leaders of Israel need to start acting like leaders. They need to be thinking about what is best for the very SURVIVAL of Israel and its people, and worry less about world opinion. As an example, consider this proposal to deal with suicide bombers. To the so-called Palestinians, the quest for territory(land) means everything. It means more than human life. Therfore, for every suicide bombing incident, consider taking back some of the territory(land) previously given to them. For example, one bombing= 500 sq. meters of land taken back. A second bombing loses another 500 sq. meters, etc. All of a sudden, the suicide bombers start to lose their attraction, and the results of their actions directly hurt their own cause. This would really help to take the shine off of their martyrdom and would put the pressure on their own organizations to stop the insanity. I would love to hear other comments on this. Robert

Hopefully these sentiments will have practical consequences if BB becomes PM, like mandating that only Jews can buy out moslem inhabitants in the Old City, at least, when they buy or die, to make the city Jewish and remove moslems claims to it based on habitation.

There are three items that define a nation Special Laws, Special Language,Special Land. The torah is our special Laws, Hebrew is our special language and Israel is our special land. The United States has special laws the Constitution, special language English and special land the United States from sea to shinning sea. The US capitol is Washington defined and recognized not by London or Paris but by the citizens of the United States. The capitol of Israel is defined and recognized not only by its citizens but in conjunction with a higher source ha shem. Our greatest respect from the world is when we act with strenght and demand respect.IF nations want to do business with Israel they must do busines on our terms by recognizing Jerusalem as our capitol.

Mr. Netanyahu, Israel is in the center of the world for a reason. G-d decided to bring about His plan for the world through the tiny nation of Israel with Jerusalem at its center. The City of G-d will never belong to another for He says " I have set my watchmen on your walls, O Jerusalem; They shall never hold their peace day or night. You who make mention of the Lord, do not keep silent, And give Him no rest till He establishes Jerusalem and makes her the praise of the earth. Isaiah 62:6-7

Jerusalem is not what keeps the Jews hopes alive but rather what sits atop the city...The Temple Mount. Israel has the city but when are you going to claim your birthrite and reclaim the temple mount? That is the core desire that keeps the hopes and wills of Jews around the world focused. As Israel becomes increasingly secular many are forgetful of why Jerusalem is important. It's not the city, it's the hope of the Jew that one day God will choose to speak to his children from the same place that he did in the past. But for those whom have forgotten, Jerusalem, the city, will do. Speak plainly and make your real point known, Bibi. Call upon God and he will come.

BB Without researching but from memory I pose the following questions: Did you accept the Oslo agreements? yes! did you give up most of hebron? yes! Did yoy supply more weapons to arafat? yes!Did you agree to give up 6-10% of westbank? yes! did you show same cowardly restraint of acting against arab aggression time and again until you had no choice and against hizbola and syria until you had reseigned yourself to new elections and arens was DM? yes!Did you abandon the feild to sharon when you could have been PM. Did you not support gaza withdrawal and only resigned when polls showed it was not as popular as you beleived and to try to preserve some credability with your core support when it would have no effect on gaza outcome? yes! Did you not explore giving up golan or major portion with butcher in damascas? yes! we thought we were getting a right wing conservative leader steaped in classical zionist and jewish ideology with a strong historical world view of israel and the jewish peoples place in history. instead we got waterd down copy of yossi sarid. you betrayed us in showing us the small petty politician that you were. there is a saying if you burn me once your fault if I let you burn me second time it is my fault.. You always talked the talk but almost never walked the walk. you brought naveh, livni and others like them into politics and promoted them, then they turned on you. wasent it obvious that all were using you for advancement till you were no longer an asset for them. Your choices in people and lack of loyalty by them to you is glaring. Heh I am not looking for a saint but a leader that says what he thinks and then acts to impliment his beleifs.I have admit you had a lot of bad luck but that goes with the territory you never overcame it and you know that unlike sharon adopting the lefts agenda will not endear you to thm they hate you too much, its either solidifying right wing base or losing the next round of elections. so you would be advised to say what you mean up front, if we like it we might give you another chance , then again maybe we wont.

Why are you not becoming stronger overall, Likuid is like our Republican party and it is truly a shame of history that Likud has not been in power durring President Bush, The World would be better off with Guilliani/Gingrich As Pres/ and VP here and You in Israel.

Bibi, We trusted you. We put our faith in you. And then when you were elected PM, you put the Golan up on the negotiating block. Few people talk about this today. But most do not forget. Where was your owmn personal Lion of Judah? Where were your convictions? How can we trust that you will not do what all recent politicians have done - 180 degree turnarounds in policies and cheap sell outs to America and our Arab antagonist neoghtboors? Where is Menachem Begin when we need him most?

To all Israelis: Giving up Jerusalem, the West Bank, the Golan is as criminal as was giving up Gaza. You can see the result. Every concession is a tribute to Chamberlain at Munich. The demands of the Palestinians will never cease. There will be increasing demands to allow the refugees to return. There will also be increased demands that Israel give up its nuclear weapons. It's beyond me why Israel, with the strongest military force in the area, has to bend over backwards to placate a savage enemy. The military action in Lebanon was a fiasco. Rockets hit Isral every day without a meaningful response from the best airforce in the world. What a farce is Israeli leadership and what a shame that you Israelis allow this to continue.

Robert (#30): A good start, but your idea needs more elements to rise to a comprehensive plan. First, it can't be an agreed approach, but a statement of Israeli policy that will bind the government in the future. Second, there needs to be an a priori border from which to take the /bombing parcels. Third, Israel has to commit to assisting in the economic development of the Arab state, regardless of terror, thus de-linking its commitment to Palestinian independence from how the Palestinians behave. Fourth, independence has to be put on a clock -- say three years -- which will be re-set to 0 every time there is an outrage, thus making independence that much farther off as well as the country becoming that much smaller. I wrote a comprehensive plan along these lines in 1998 (when Bibi was PM). David Segal

Mr. Netanyahu, Let me start by saying that in my view, you are a rarity in Israeli politics. You are one of the only politicians with both the ability and the will to confront terrorists head on. If I were an Israeli citizen, the Likud would have my vote in the next election. I hope you become Prime Minister at the next election; the Winograd Commission has proven the uselessness of Kadima. Please, I beg you, Mr. Netanyahu, stop the terrorists. Stop the shootings in the West Bank. Stop the Qassam rockets landing in Sderot. Terrorism is a cancer, that should be eradicated from the face of the Earth. Israel can live in peace if the Palestinian terrorists, including the Hamas politicians, are arrested, exiled or killed. Good luck, Mr. Netanyahu.

As a Christian I recognize Jerusalem as the Capital of Israel. Israel should be returned to the borders of the era of King David & Solomon - the true Biblical borders of the land of the Kings of Israel. I also recognize that the borders of Israel set by God are Genesis 15:18-21 In the same day the LORD made a covenant with Abram, saying, Unto thy seed have I given this land, from the river of Egypt unto the great river, the river Euphrates:The Kenites, and the Kenizzites, and the Kadmonites,And the Hittites, and the Perizzites, and the Rephaims,And the Amorites, and the Canaanites, and the Girgashites, and the Jebusites. No person should divide the land or Jerusalem. Israelis should not support any "land for peace deal"... to take the land is what the Arabs want. Israel should take all of the land back, tear down the Dome of the Rock and the al-Asqa Mosque- and rebuild the Temple. Israel - enough is enough. Do what the Lord your God has called you to do. Do not support this new agenda of talks hosted by President Bush and the USA. Take back your land and your Temple Mount. |
