The legacy of Jabotinsky is strong and it exists even today. It exists in our family, in all of our families and it exists in the Betar family. The question is – Does it exist in the Nation? It seems to me that it exists partially, but only partially. We must bequeath its existence to the fullest, because nothing is more relevant to our ability to cope with the challenges that face us today.

We face existential troubles, but nonetheless, it appears as though the ability to perceive reality as it is, all that it entails, and to act in order to distance danger and overcome it, is an ability that the Jewish people lack. The Nation of Israel survived for the last two thousand years, but its survival is still small in comparison to the survival of other ancient nations.

We say, “Am Israel Chai (The Nation of Israel lives),” but the Chinese nation lives with one billion and a quarter Chinese people and the Indian nation lives with one billion Indians. The Jewish nation also lives, but with a lot less Jews. Over the generations, Jews did not excel in recognizing the existence of the collective threats nor did they excel in implementing actions to curb them. In the end, the ultimate test for leaders is to take advantage of opportunities for the good of the Nation and to identify and get rid of the powers that endanger them.

Identifying its dangers is the first stipulation for the successful existence of a living creature. Every living organism must identify a danger in time; otherwise it will be devoured and will disappear. This fact is true to biological organisms, true to humanity and true to the Nation. We, as a nation, are apparently lacking in this ability.

Approximately 50 years ago my father wrote a book about the Jewish leader, Don Yitzhak Abarbanel. Abarbanel was a theologist, a philosopher, a countryman and a great finance man. He was a finance minister under the reign of Portuguese King Alfonso the Fifth, as well as for King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain. His genius passed a test of the generations. But this Renaissance man said several years before the expulsion from Spain that the Jews will live securely. He discerned that the situation of the Jews was fine, at the time when the Inquisition was already in the works, and the expulsion was looming. Although he was blessed with endless talents, Abarbanel did not foresee the imminent and forthcoming catastrophe.

Binyamin Ze’ev Herzl, as opposed to Abarbanel, was endowed with the ability to foresee in a prophetic manner attributed to that of the Bible. He accurately identified anti-Semitic dangers at the end of the 19th Century, almost 50 years prior to the Holocaust. No other man identified the threat in so clearly and precisely. Despite anti-Semitic immolations such as the Dreyfus trial in Paris, the general consensus among the Jews of Western Europe at the end of the 19th Century was that their situation was wonderful.

They went from the ghettos to wide-open spaces of education and achievement, were integrated into every part of society, and they blossomed. When Herzl identified the danger and foresaw the Holocaust, he cautioned, he volunteered and was even ready to go to as far as – Uganda. Herzl acted in such a way since he could sense that the danger was imminent and that it was merely a matter of time until it threatened the core of European Jewry.

It is well known that Herzl could not recruit his people for the cause in time. Had he succeeded, the pain of the Holocaust would not have been felt. There was enough strength and time to break through to the gates of Israel. In that period, the land was under Ottoman Rule; a weak and hollow empire, on the verge of collapse.

Herzl stood and said, I am here standing with a stopwatch awaiting the downfall of this empire after which we can fulfill the founding of the Jewish State.

He died in 1904 and a decade later, the fall of the Ottoman Empire came about, as he’d predicted.

At the Paris Peace Conference of 1919, Chaim Weizman requested that the Jewish people’s rights be upheld in their respective countries but failed to establish a Jewish State in the land of Israel. Israel Zangwill, brilliant student of Herzl’s and one of Britain’s brightest authors shot back at Weizman: Why did you not demand the Jewish State? This is the opportunity to get compensation for the contribution made by hundreds of thousands of Jewish soldiers in the Allied forces that defeated the Turks. Weizman answered meekly: I did not ask because it would not have been granted.

The very first President of Israel possessed many admirable qualities but those of a statesman were not among them. He was a talented diplomat, knew how to make a connection with people from all walks of life and to socialize, but he lacked statesmanship – first and foremost the ability to recognize danger and to identify opportunities.

Essentially, the founding of the State came about not because of danger and not because of anti-Semitism. It was established because of a love for Zion, a yearning for the land of Israel, because of the survival of our people’s dream to return to our homeland. However, these factors only saw a few thousand Jews making their home here.

Millions of Jews did not understand the gravity of the threat they faced (and did not attempt to join their brethren in the homeland). Indeed, if they had recognized the danger in a timely manner, there would have been an opportunity for our people to join forces and unite, against the White Paper and against all the obstacles imposed by Britain thereafter. But the majority of the Jewish people did not understand nor did they want to understand.

The only man with leadership that followed Herzl was Jabotinsky, but as in Herzl’s case, it became clear that a lone statesman, as talented and brilliant as he may be, cannot save an entire people. Like Herzl, Jabotinsky was gifted with the ability to look clearly at the reality of situations, even through the fog of the present and the future.  To face the danger as it is and to look for the opportunities. Where others, while speaking of a national home and even a Jewish State, wasted precious time, Jabotinsky volunteered and fought since he understood that time was not on the side of our people.

Even so, Jabotinsky did not manage to convey to the majority of our people just how severe the danger was. He was perceived then as a furious visionary. The strongest objections to Jabotinsky did not come from the Bund (German Jewish Socialist Movement), but from within the Zionist ranks, that accused him of exaggerating and sowing panic. In retrospect, the reasons for these attacks are not self-explanatory.

Jabotinsky was a talented man, dignified and respectable. Why so much hatred towards this man who warned against a danger that ended up materializing exactly as he'd predicted? It is difficult to find a similar incident among other nations. This is uniquely a Jewish phenomenon: repressing and denying the danger and remaining on the offensive of the one who cautions against it.

Jabotinsky suffered greatly from such treatment from our people, but he did not relent as a result, not even for a moment. Like a prophet of Israel, he called out against the danger even when no one listened. His heartfelt cry in Warsaw was the cry of a Prophet.

It was answered by only a few. Some came to Israel and created the basis for the rebellion movement that in the end, succeeded in freeing our land from British rule. The Herzlian and Jabotinskian goal to save our people was not fulfilled. However, a seedling for the creation of the State of Israel was achieved; this assured our nation’s future.

They never admitted it, but many leaders of the Yishuv’s movement were very much inspired by Jabotinsky ideas and vision – for example the notion of a Jewish Military, that made its debut as a leader in the separation in Galipoli, and in various operations against the British. This vision, mocked and rejected by many Jews, turned into a founding stone for our nation. Does anyone really believe that we would have been here today without the IDF? As strange as it sounds, the notion of a Jewish Army 90 years ago was thought of as insane.

Jabotinsky saw with clear precision the need to manage international public opinion. He understood that a military victory cannot be achieved without a political victory and that a political victory cannot be established without the public's support.

Is Jabotinsky’s legacy alive today? It sure is! I’ll start with the first component – recognizing danger. We stand today facing an existential danger. A year and a half ago, my colleagues and I warned against this danger but our calls were dismissed by our political rivals.

Our warning; that a unilateral disengagement without any agreement or security arrangements will just create a situation in which extremists will immediately flood the area we have evacuated and use it as a launching pad for more attacks against us. This is exactly what happened to us, starting in Lebanon then the Gaza Strip and if we would have continued in this path, in Judea and Samaria as well.

We stand today at the forefront of the struggle between the democratic world and its attackers. We have experienced four significant struggles in the past 100 years: against Prussian militarism in the First World War, Nazi militarism in the Second World War, Soviet militarism in the Third World War, which was a Cold War and carried out without bloodshed. Now, we are in the Fourth World War, facing extremist Islamic militarism which threatens Muslim Arabs, Americans and Europeans but first and foremost, the Jewish State. This calls for five political components.

Firstly, as I’ve argued, Herzl and Jabotinsky would have handled the situation first of all with timely recognition of the danger. Many in our nation are now becoming aware of the problems we face when they could have done so a decade ago, if not before.

Secondly, Herzl and Jabotinsky would have looked for allies. In order to achieve our goals, we need to build as wide a front as possible with those who share a common interest or common values. When Herzl sought to open the gates of Israel, he tried to create a rapport of interest with the German Chancellor and the Ottoman Sultan. In turning to them, he attempted to expand the number of forces that would stand by the Zionists. Jabotinsky tried to gain popular support in the United States. He understood that the US was an up-and-coming power and that we would benefit from their support for the creation of a Jewish State.

Still today, we need to gain more support. Our natural supporters are also on the defensive from Islamic extremism. Therefore, our first priority should be in the international field, in engaging world leaders. There are several leaderships that are important for this cause: German, French, British but more importantly the US President and his two possible successors. To this we must add the Russian President, since Russia is also a target for Islamic extremism. A coordinated effort must be put into place to make these leaders understand that their states are also under existential threat and that the spread of Islamic terror and the arming of fanatic governments such as an Iran with nuclear capabilities, is very much a danger to us all. These threats also affect the supply of oil to the China, which should also be addressed.

Thirdly, Jabotinsky would have turned to public opinion. He taught us that in the democratic world (and the world is becoming more and more democratic), leaders’ decisions are affected significantly by public opinion. Therefore, we must gain support first and foremost amongst the American population, not to mention European. Europe must understand that the threat of Islamic terrorism is very much relevant to them.

Fourthly, Jabotinsky would have applied pressure in key points at the heart of the threat – Iran. We must act with economic sanctions, capable of eroding the Ayatollahs’ regime and bringing about its de-legitimization. These sanctions should destabilize the regime and aim to gain popular support should the need arise for a more aggressive approach that would essentially remove the threat.

Finally, Jabotinsky would have emphasized the need to build an independent and powerful economic force in Israel. The security concerns that we face and the implementations we must make, necessitate enormous investments and no one will just hand us the money to protect ourselves on all fronts. Therefore, this means that an additional component is needed – a strong economy, capable of, amongst other things, providing the necessary material resources for our security. We need an economy with powerful growth capabilities not just to solve our societal issues such as education, absorption and so on. We need a sturdy economy first and foremost because we need to be able to defend ourselves, and strong national security is very expensive.

These are the five components of political realism, in the spirit of Jabotinsky, needed today. These policies will enable us to push back the present threats and deter any future ones.

We are not exaggerating nor fabricating. In the spirit of Ze’ev Jabotinsky, we are recognizing the threat and proposing practical solutions to combat it and defeat it, if necessary.

Are the doctrines of Herzl and Jabotinsky relevant today? They are not only relevant, they are the sources of life for our people and I personally choose to see them fulfilled thoroughly.

I would never vote for a person who is in favour of a "Palestine" state in our heartland, nor of a person who stood idly by when Gush Kartiv was destroyed.Feiglan is nearer Jabotinsky than Natanyahu.

You got it wrong about Herzl. If I read it correctly, he was totaly ignorant about what has kept Judaism alive and not only was he satisfied with his Uganda scheme but was reported to have appealed to Pope to solve the problem of anti-semitism by encouraging mass conversion of Jews to Christianity. So much for his ideals. Jabotinsky did not give much credence to the role of Hashem as having a great influence on our past and future existence of our People. You Bibi, with due respects to your talents and charisma, are also blind to this aspect and are making the same mistake - like most of our secular past leaders. You need urgenly to shake yourself out of your materialistic and egoistic fantasies

3  |   Narisha, Wednesday Sep 05, 2007

Mr. Netanyahu, it's OK for you to post an article as well. That's your right!

I'll start commenting on your article, starting form alinea 5, as 1 through 4 I don't find interesting to comment on.

That Abarbanel you're talking about is probably one of the many philosophers, who were in most cases too optimistic, and therefor (indeed) blind for things (already) happening in Europe. But for centuries before that Jews have always been living in a Big Vicious Circle of Love-Hate Relationship with the nation in which they lived. The same pattern, dominated by fear and insecurity about whether to integrate/assimilate or not and about how much a Jew should accept of the dominitating non-Jewish values, is what we read about. And it doesn't matter if the story was written in an ancient period of time or between 1700 and 1900 or in the 20th century or now.

The story tells us the same thing: Jew not knowing what to expect despite any decision made or not (about integrate, or not, in European societies). That's not any different from today, Bibi! We see the same pattern again - only this time not only big groups of Jews 'have that problem' - but other groups too!

That's also what put the Jewish issue, if we can call that that way, in a so different social perspective. It's an issue that concerns so many non-Jews - as we see the same assimilating issues and resistance to integration among an extremely large number of non-Jews who don't share (all the) European values!

So, at least Jews have been liberated, from the Stigma of that Jewish Issue - as now it's a Turkish Issue and also a Moroccan Issue as well. Generally it's now an Islamic Issue of which Jews who (still) struggle with our free values, of which they don't agree, are a part of. So, those Jews are no longer a big issue, but part of a bigger issue. And so the 'new situation' has brought you some good (you lost an Old Stigma) but it brought you some bad too (Jewish is no longer the issue, but part of a big issue concerning that many Europeans)!

Zionism, Bibi, was NEVER meant as mean to oppress (any) other people, but you can't deny, Bibi, that that is what it has become (since 1948). Zionism could have worked out as it was meant to do: to FREE Jews from that oppression they had to live in for so many centuries!! Not to oppress your new neighbours, as it turned out to be doing since 1948!!

Indeed, Bibi, MANY (much more than you might think) have never understood the structural threats Jews face - whether they live in Israel or outside Israel!

The biggest threat has already been so completed: the millions of Jews who've converted to Christianity, out of need or out of free choice. Mostly they did that due to a simultanious combination of 2 historical facts: 1)Israel didn't exist and/or their expectations of one day being able to live in Israel never really existed, and 2)their lives in a country other than Israel would surely improve if they converted, as that was what happened to Jews who did that. So they decided to forget about Judaism - and nobody can blame them for doing so.

Nowadays most of those Jewish families aren't even connected to Judaism. They have become Christian families, with a set of values and customs that are not to be considered Jewish. As that's not something you can turn back, nor would you be able to stop that process. Even today there are Jews who decide to put an end - to something they won't enjoy.

You write about that fight, between us and the ones who don't want us to live in freedom. You call it: the democracy versus its attackers. I would call it: free democracy versus democracy of the ones who want to oppress other people!

For I'm sure the religious zealots who want to impose their values and way of living on us do believe they are not a group of anti-democratic people. But I am sure that what they want is to MAKE us live like they do while we couldn't care less about how they live, as long as they don't touch our rights nor our freedom. That's the problem here, Bibi.

No, Bibi, this world is not becoming a more democratic world. It's becoming a world in which more and more countries are in charge of implementing the 'new democracies' they've become in the way they (that's the religious majority in those countries) wish to. But we don't want such democracies in OUR country - for such democracies will only be for them, Bibi, not for us - unless we too become like them (what they want us to be). You see, Bibi, that ain't what we are waiting for! Not here not anywhere on this planet, Bibi. Bibi, we have to keep FIGHTING them, and who's with us, is our friend, who's against us is our enemy. It's as simple as that, Bibi. I can't explain it better to you, Bibi!!

But the problem is, Bibi, that they as well think of us in that way. They and their friends don't want what we want, for ourselves. The different (between us and them) is, Bibi, that we are not even interested in their way of living while they want to impose on us theirs.

Finally Bibi: Iran is a threat, but to you and to your Israel. Not to us, for not even (what's his name?) Ajaminabad will DARE attack our country. So Bibi, that is a point where you need us more than we need you. So maybe we could be able to SWAP on points like that. I've always thought of you, Bibi, as 'a man we can get important agreements with'!

And I'm sure MANY MORE think of you as the Liberal Israeli politician who can help us in our struggle, against those who want to oppress us AND you, Bibi!!

It always makes me cringe when Bibi talks about Jabotinsky. I can't think of anyone who has spit in his grave more than Bibi. Stop talking about things you don't understand. Feiglin is essentially Jabotinsky reincarnated.

5  |   Stephanie Gold, Wednesday Sep 05, 2007

Very pertinent observation and sensible solutions from a true leader.

I think faith in the inherent good of mankind is paradoxically both the problem and the solution here. On the negative side, it is harboured in excess, breeding complacency and a degree of denial. Thus, responses are reactive and the cost is always greater than when a threat is recognised and combatted at the earliest possible moment. However, in moderation, it is what inspires the necessary action, the belief that the vast majority of humanity, our natural allies can be enlightened as to reality and join us in neutralising these existential threats with eventual success.

Bibi all five of your solutions are not only reasonable and achieveable but you exhibit a remarkable ability to lead by example. You were proven right about the disengagement from Gaza and now the government are considering your proposed solution to the problem that the withdrawal created (cutting off electricity). I need not even mention Iran, which is only now becoming a mainstream concern, despite your warnings 15 years ago...

6  |   S. Jeffrey, Wednesday Sep 05, 2007

Bibi, the nation of Israel will continue to exist but we must all pay attention to see what befalls the nations that desire its destruction! "Those who bless you, (you being Abraham's seed) God will bless, those who curse you, God will curse."

7  |   Ben Zalman, Wednesday Sep 05, 2007

Has there ever been a time in 4000 yrs of Jewish history when some nation or people were NOT trying to kill or harass Jews? Right up until today. Israel...you are the "barometer" of what happens to not only us Jews, but of the civilized world. If Mr "Bibi" is voted in, perhaps he will go after these radical Islamic terrorists with a potential "hiroshima" nuke! Israel, be prepared 24/7...the "pogromchiks" are still here. That clone of Hitler in Iran is a nothing less than a Holocaust mentality!

8  |   Jewish neighbor, Wednesday Sep 05, 2007

Wicked? "We [secular Jews] have to keep FIGHTING them [religious Jews], and who's with us, is our friend, who's against us is our enemy. It's as simple as that."

"You will love your neighbor as yourself."

Secular Jews and religious Jews are eachothers neighbors. God requires Jews to love eachother.

Incidentally, Druz are also "neighbors" because they ally themselves with the Jewish people, and as Gerim are even part of the Jewish people.

Arab Muslims who are enemies of Jews are, by definition, not neighbors of Jews.

Jews must love eachother and their allies.

(Jews must respect humans, even enemies, but cant help enemies do evil and must even destroy enemies in self-defense.)

The Second Temple was destroyed because different Jewish groups didnt love eachother.

Today, for Israel to flourish, different Jewish groups must love eachother. Even value eachothers differences.

9  |   Jim, Wednesday Sep 05, 2007

Mr. Netanyahu - Good article. There were a couple of points however, that you did not address. When you noted the maddening lethargy of the Israeli masses, you were correct, up to a point. After last summer's battle with the Hez. I was so frustrated with Israel's refusal to fight that I wanted to shake Olmert and Livni and tell them to open your eyes. Clearly, Washington was also frustrated for after stalling and stalling while waiting for Israel to fight, it was useless until just a couple of days before the mandate went into effect. I fear that Israel's refusal to fight may have led Washington to start questioning their value as a REAL, ally in that part of the world.

But back to the masses lethargy - The masses are NOT, stupid and are fully aware of the dangers ahead. When questioned as to why, the answer is always: "What can we do?" Their lethargy lies in the fact that in reality there really is, very little that they can do. WHY? Well your political system does not answer to the masses. It is NOT representative nor responsive to the will of the people. If it were, Olmert and LIVNI would have been gone a week after the end of last summer's war (and, should have been charged with treason). And now, as if things were not already bad enough, Olmert and Livni have thrown gas on the fire by bringing PERES back into the circle. Insane...

Yes, Israel has many dangerous enemies. But, the MOST dangerous entity is Israel's ELITIST, political system which does not represent the will of Israel's hard-working people and, cares nothing for the country (just their pocketbooks). I strongly suspect that Israel does not have enough TIME, to resolve/repair this problem before the next conflagration. So, the politicians are certainly not going to try and "fix it" as that would mean that they have to answer to the will of the people or, get kicked out of office. Thus, probably, Israel's only remaining hope - is the IDF. But since the top IDF commanders are so closly affiliated with the politicos, this is also unlikely (unless mid-ranked officers do another "Young Turks" action. But, since it is a "peoples Army" this is also unlikely).

So, we are left with the current circumstances as they are now. Now more than a year after last summer's war, Olmert (Israel's modern day Kastner) and Livni are still in office with rock-bottom support of the people but are still trying to give away more pieces of Israel to terrorists who will use the land to continue killing more people (again... just like they always have)

Mr. Netanyahu (being certain that you have the intellect to learn from past mistakes and the mistakes of others), just as Caroline Glick pointed out several months ago, it is insane to give away land to terrorists for the illusion of "Land For Peace". Until ALL, ALL the Pals love peace more that killing Israelis, there can never be peace, other than by massive force. Until ALL, the Pals come to Israel together with solid proposals for peace, the first order of business is the defense of Israel and its people.

One last thing, Israel should have an international public relations agency that can respond to insane absurdities that many read and actually, believe! Clearly, terrorist propaganda is starting to have an impact on world opinion. Israel MUST show the world the truth and counter the current vile absurdities being spewed by radical terrorists and their even more vile supporters (mentally challenged, sick, or closeted anti-Semites).

Mr. Netanyahu... Do Not allow further political concessions to be used to kill more Israelis. Let the Pals settle their own differences THEN, come to Israel praying for peace. NO MORE CONCESSIONS UNTIL ALL, ALL PALS WANT TO LIVE IN PEACE WITH ISRAEL AND STOP THE PLANNED WANTON SLAUGHTER OF WOMEN AND CHILDREN... PLEASE.

I am not so familiar with the details of those you have championed, but I aplaud your rational regarding Israel's present position and you were right to oppose disengagement from Gaza.

You are right to oppose disengagement from any part of ancient, Biblical Israel including Judea and Samaria. You have from what I have gathered the closest philosophy to that of the Biblical prophets. No matter what foolish moves politicians may make, God's will is the final determining factor.

No other people than 'am israel' has the right to claim sovereignty over any part of biblical Israel, and those who attempt to, or assist those who would have the God of the Jews to answer to.

Joel 3:1 "For behold, in those days and at that time, When I bring back the captives of Judah and Jerusalem,

2 I will also gather all nations, And bring them down to the Valley of Jehoshaphat; And I will enter into judgment with them there On account of My people, My heritage Israel, Whom they have scattered among the nations; They have also divided up My land.

3 They have cast lots for My people, Have given a boy as payment for a harlot, And sold a girl for wine, that they may drink.

God Bless You and Your's Bibi.

I think most of Israel has taken the eye off the ball and even jabotinski would agree if he were alive today, the central issue Bibi, which no one will address is we are still at war with many arab and muslim states still, they may not engage us in conflict between armies but are fighting us in other areas, using proxies. We some way down the road forgot ,we need to have total victory over our enemies. The Israeli military needs to upgrade itself and strenghten its coast guard to a real navy.In the future we cannot rely on the Usa to give us a umbrella, there resources are to thin,we need to not be a pin cushion to terror and state terror.I hate war but we will have to eliminate the syrian, iranian, hezbullah, hamas alliance. Our leaders including yourself must not procrastinate like olmert is doing. We must develop and enlarge the military, maybe to even make a foreign legion type force to help our draft and reservists it works in england with the gurkas and france and spain with there own legions. Also bring a American and English style discipine in our military.I think u had a good point, stop taking money from the Usa also I think jabotinski would not allow us this, we would get alot of points in America for ending the welfare (betuach leumi)payments to israel, then asked america,we would purchase from them the newest stuff and they have the best navy in the world. We could project power close to the iranians. We must seperate iran from syria then this will cut off the hizbullah-hamas axis.I hope u have the guts when u are prime minister again,I think the only mistakes u made prior was ,why not u in front of the hypocritical euro states, bring to light there occupation of many peoples also and they have no formula for peace with them.I will give u one example why dont u mention to the spanish, they push us for land for peace but give catalan limited indeoendence and occupy basque lands.I think A jewish leader must have balls because the euros have some how put zionism with aparteid. And this has produce alot of anti semitism and violence.I wish we had jabotinski today to argue and fight for Israel and even a abarbanel to debate our enemies. Our leaders most of them today only care about the benefits they get from the governement.

Israel is in real danger because the most of it's people do not trust in the Almighty but rather in their Army and USA and politics. Will a next war be something like a sign that God Almighty wants to show HIS people that He's waiting for them to give him Honour and Glory. Israel, for how long will you trust in the USA and politics? Have you never learnt out of history? May the Lord be merciful on you!

You complain about the smallness of the Jewish nation but that is your own fault. There would be a lot more Jews in Israel if you stopped discriminating against patrilineals. Instead of complaining about what others have done to the Jews to reduce their numbers why don't you think about what you've done to your own children and grandchildren by rejecting them from their own families. www.jewishjustice.com

Feiglin is indeed more Jabotinsky.

15  |   John, Thursday Sep 06, 2007

Bibi:

You say, "We stand today at the forefront of the struggle between the democratic world and its attackers." Yet Olmert is giving the farm away to Abbas, giving money, arms, land, releasing and giving amnesty to terrorist, ripping Jews out of their homes while Israel receives nothing but rockets in return. Money he gave Abbas went to pay Hamas for a year. Where is the outrage? It's even money at best that Abbas even survives, yet Olmert is mortgaging Israel's future on just that. Where is the political opposition to all this? Where are you on all this?

Writing a blog is all well and good but not nearly enough. You must step it up. Stop worrying so much about Feiglan and start worrying more about the children of Sderot.

16  |   Shalom, Thursday Sep 06, 2007

Well written, beautiful article! But at this stage, when the country facing multiple dangers of a magnitude never seen before, the State of Israel needs more than eloquency! Much more than great speeches or articles. The country needs a different leadership; a leadership that is capable to unite the forces of the society, viz. the Knesset, the people and even the army in order to save the country from the present leftist, destructive, antizionist, corrupt and antireligious politicians, and not less importantly to stand up to american and international pressure. Good Luck Bibi and G-d Bless Israel!

Irans nuclear built-up to destroy Israel will not be stopped by sanctions. The Jabotinsky of today, not to forget his disciple Menachem Begin,

with the military power of Israel as it is,high-tec,with self constructed

jets,not smuggeled Hitlers Messerschmitt Me- 109 in pieces;

would have attacked and destoyed the

nuclear reactors of Irtan long time ago.

The present Israel is watching them grow by Satellite.

A danger to the very existence of Israel does not come out of the kassams of tzhe Gazans, but out of the

nuclear programme of Iran.

Every day Israel does not attack, that danger will grow stronger, adding the fact that money-hungry russia will self so many anti-aircraft systems

to Iran, that an air raid like the one on Iraks Nuclear Facilities is no longer possible.

and the jewish people will live on in

fear for 24 hours a day.

Under the biggest challenges of security or statehood, where "the world"

- jews must understand once and for all

that they are alonge i nmost important

periods of history and must act alone and decisive- was surprised by the determination of that time, a kibbutznik 1948 with a bottle of molotov-cocktail alone against a syrian tank, french made, had a better

chance than an airport commander, who gets no orders to attack his enemy.

While a handful of polish and german

jews drew bach a syrian tank unit near the shores of the kinneret,so saving the whole Galil, the complete israeli government today is caught by natures

doctrine of the snake and the rabbit.

The sanke stares at the rabbit. The rabbit will not move.

The rest is known.

Israel must move.

Israel hopes,Bibi will.

Mazal tov le am israel.

Lies! You allowed pogroms in Gaza to go ahead - you did not vote against them.

You will give away Golans, you will give away Jerusalem. You will give away Judea and Samaria. You are just as bad as the rest of them. Am I wrong? So far no one saw anything in your "platform" to the contrary.

Well written and well put. If I may add, the lethargy is largely to do with ingrained curruption in our political system -- it is *depressing*

Bibi's ideas on economics are correct, but the greatest issue is complete lack of confidence in our leaders. If you talk to people on the street, most dont distinguish between Bibi and Olmert, which is very sad and arises largely due to media bias.

Also you cannot talk about economics without emphasizing education. The success in the economy today is the direct result of our emphasis on education in the past. Sadly, that advantage is rapidly eroding.

Getting back to Bibi.. sometimes its not good enough to be just better then Olmert/Barak/Peres/Livni... unfortunately, your ethics are your achilles heal, and its a real shame.

What do Aussie, Californian, Floridian and Germ write for as if they live and carry the burden in Israel?? I neither live or carry the burden in Israel, as that's the reason why I don't write in a way that pretends I do. So, they too should be more objective to the burden and suffering Jews AND Palestinians do have to cope with on a daily basis, as that's the best way not to offend them.

Bibi is a politician with a too smooth talk, married to an uncharismatic tiny woman who does not appeal to any woman who sees herself as an independent and strong woman, in today's modern world, and for those reasons as well Bibi has not been able to gather a larger group of liberals behind him in Likud. If he wishes that, he'll have to start a new party of his own. In the Likud he will not have the chance - ever - to become the kind of liberal politician he is!!

But most of all, Bibi is a politician, like all the other politicians. Do not expect him to be telling you the truth and nothing but the truth. Probably he doesn't even tell Sarah the truth. The BIGGEST PROBLEM Bibi has, in political terms, is that he too already was PM - and he too already tried - and failed!

But he seems to me an honest man whose political intentions might be an issue of concern to us. But at aleast he did not tell us anything that we would not be able to expect from a man like him!

So he didn't make promises he couldn't keep - and in that I think of him as a politician who's standing with his two feet on the ground and is not dreaming about things that are not quite likely to happen, like for example Ehud Barak.

And I like his straight forwardness as I like to know WHAT politicians intend to do IF they become PM, not what he's telling me he wants to do (in order to get my vote). And Bibi isn't a bad man.

And in many ways he is for people like us - underdogs in most societies - the only real hope that in Israel our sort of people, if I can put it in that way in this story, may have a better life!

Most important thing about Bibi is: he has a good heart and he loves people!! It is a shame he's married to a woman, who many times seems to be an opposite personality of who Bibi himself is. It is possible that that is what he loves most in Sara, as the opposite attracts.

And, despite being PM for the Likud at that time, he STRESSED very much he is committed to a just peace, that should benefit the Palestinians as much as it should benefit the Jews (the Israelis).

And THAT perhaps many Likud members of then didn't like and din't expect from a so-called hardliner like Netanyahu!!

You shouldn't blame Bibi for the mess, he alraedy found himself in as PM. The mess started with the Peace Process as it was never well thought through. For political reasons in the USA Israelis, and Palestinians alike, were forced to step into a process that would lead to nothing, as long as they are not ready to make peace as still both peoples do have traumas out of the past they will have to cope with and give it a place!

But Netanyahu understands that, and he never used that against Palestinians!!

Bibi please enough rhetoric and remember that you are not a Herzl or a Jabotinsky! Forget it; your record as PM and your defeat by Barak, leading you to decide to quit politics, prove the point. Dont' be unkind to the Jews and to the Israeli people. Dont' use scary tactics thinking that by frightening people you'll get their vote. Israel is a great democracy and a super regional power, in spite of the Hizbollah setback and the mistakes that were made, criticised and admitted! Dont' be unkind to Israel's first President, Dr. Haim Weizmann and read a bit of history to refresh your memory (a selective one, apparently)and to know that Haim Weizmann joined the Zionist Movement from its inception, founded the Democratic Fraction in 1901, rejected the Uganda Plan in 1903, got the Balfour Declaration of 2nd November 1917, was elected president of the Zionist Federation of England that same year; He continued his foreign struggle until the creation of Israel. You now have the temerity to sit in judgement of one of the greatest men in Jewish history saying"he possessed many admirable qualities but those of a statesman were not among them"! Really, look who is talking! Finally you created 4 World Wars, the 3rd of which was without bloodshed! We know of 2 World Wars, the 2nd is famous for the Nazi Blitz over London, which you compared to the 'Saddam Scud adventure over Tel Aviv, which you qualified as a Blitz!!? Your '3rd World war' was without bloodshed, as you confidently stated. What about the millions who died in Cambodia, Rwanda, Burundi and many other places, in local 'conflicts'? Please, keep your promise, quit politics and give no more lessons. Thanks.

three words for bibi: bla bla bla (but a good bla bla bla at that).

first we get the history lesson, then we get bibi trying to take on the cloacks of his heroes while ignoring his own defeats, falls and stumbles.

i too am worried about the future of israel.

i too believe that the members of our knesset and government do not deserve the title of leaders.

problem is bibi, neither do you.

you are not a leader in the true sense of the word because at the end of the day, you are just playing at a game in which we are its pawns and, most probably, its victims.

you might have done a good job with the economy (we'll see about that in the next few years) but you @#$%@#$%@# royally in evrything else.

go back to sarah or go back to your speech circuits to preach to the believers. go wherever you wish but know that you can not lead israel to a better place.

23  |   Yehoshua, Thursday Sep 06, 2007

The 99% threat, we face, comes from within the Klal, that is its DENIAL of the 'collapse' of Zionism; you're a perfect example of this as is Peres. And this is why our youth are turning away from the nation state, particularly in the US, as the nation state of Israel led what collapsed and all know this. The solution has precious little to do, with the dribble you've herein spun. And so good luck!

Bibi:

Who am I to make these serious comments concerning international affairs--I dont know but my opinions seem to "get around."

When check out and read the history of the varous complaints about you as prior prime minister I am amazed that the complaints of such things as : not slowing down but increasing settlements, didnt agree to further negotiations with arafat, opening the tunnel under araab section of Jerusalem because it made muslims mad, and one of biggest complaints was that you did not believe in the concept "land for Piece.'

I also read that you were willing to give up arab hebron but only in exchange for samaria and judea--it was barak who decided to offer samaria and judea for peace to arafat.

I hope you're people in Israel look at all the facts about your positions on Israel before they assume the partial truths are not the whole truths that are spouted.

I bellieve you have the spirit of David in the bible--maybe some of his faults--but god never chose perfect people like olmert, barak, or even perez to do big things in the name of justice! Anyway good luck and for the sake of Israel--all of israel--I hope the people re-elect you for prime minister. Amen from Eyman, m.j.

Bibi, another issue here is that about religious fundamentalists, who've said they will wage war on us (just people, like you and me and millions more) who do not wish to abide to their struggle to turn this planet into a living hell for all who in their eyes live in ways they don't agree of. Modern women, gay and lesbiens, people drinking alcohol, smokers, or anyone who doesn't live an extremely deprived 'life', won't get a life under their rule. As Bibi, that's a problem that reaches so more further away than Iran or Saudi Arabia, for an EU-member like Poland too is dominated by religiously fundamentalistic people who don't miss a chance to attack them who they hate and rather see disappear from this planet! And while they can't wait for that day that they'll be able to MASSACRE us (like they did to Jews) they try to make people call us in the countries they live in terrorists. And again we see that many of them are the so-called "friends" of Israel and it's the question which Israel they are the friends of! You see Bibi, they attack, and do to us things they did to Jewish people in the 30's of the past century.

They try to isolate us by trying to do convince people who are either neutral or tend to be in our favor that we are terrorists (not us but people like us) that want to impose on them our way of life while the TRUTH is that they have done so to us all their lives!! Poland is just one of the examples, but there are other countries (and not all those countries are islamic countries) where they try to lift with that terroristic wave in the Middle East in order to be able to push through their agenda here.

They are BUSY doing that Bibi, and the question is whether people like you or Livni are on our side, or not. Because if people like you do not stand up and accuse the fundamentalistic "religious people" of what they're doing, we will not be doing that for you when they'll turn to you to do the same to Israel!!

It's very simple Bibi: fundamentalists in Iran want a khalifat (that strictly religious way of life in which gays in no case have the right to even live or in which criticism of islam is totally forbidden and is punished by stoning)!

While, Bibi, in Poland religious nuts, who try to use this EU to spread their filthy ideas, want us dead too, for we are the ones standing in their way and who make it impossible for them to get at people, who for many reasons do not want to abide to their religious rules.

That's why they hate us, Bibi, and the reason for them to WHIPE us OFF the EU and this planet is because of religion and because of what religion teaches!!

That's why Bibi, peace is not possible with those people - just like it isn't possible to make peace with terrorists whose only goal is to destroy you, and Israel! And THAT is what now Livni and Olmert have FINALLY understood. Israel too is caught in a worldwide deadlock, which it cannot liberate itself from!!

Many do believe we're already in WWIII as it's war what is being waged around the world. The only thing is, that now war is being waged in a very different way than then. But it's still war Bibi!

And more and more innocent people, who don't have anything to do with what is happening (like us, and you too, Bibi) ask themselves how long it will take - before the war gets at our doorsteps!!

It seems matter of time, before we too will be living in hell, like you do in Israel, Bibi. Thank God we've not been in that type of danger yet, but we too expect worse things to happen, as Jews around the world too should expect bad things to happen, as they seem to want to destroy us, Bibi, at all cost! They won't stop, and what we learned out of WWII is that we (therefor) cannot stop either. For what made it possible that Hitler could come to power was that so many people (also Jews) for too long - as was shown in studies - have had the idea that Hitler wouldn't be that bad!

The Judenrat, Bibi, also was filled by Jews who thought that by cooperating - with the extermination of other Jews - they would be able to gain 'sufficient time' to save themselves. That was how it was possible for Nazi Germany to be able to let Jews do the dirty work for them. But all in the Judenrat - in all European countries - were killed too!!

So Bibi, you know that among Jews many people are to be found who are willing to commit such atrocities. You are not different from any other people, as in any nation you'll find people who wish to collaborate with killers, opponents who fight till the end, and people who don't care as long as they are so safe.

Thank God, as I read on the website of JPost, even Olmert and Livni now say a peace deal in that Middle East is 'out of the question'. Bibi, you have to be tough and you have to keep putting the pressure needed, in order to avoid the disaster from happening, for our sakes.

Fantastic article and very interesting.

I always say thank G-d for Balfour who invented nail polish remover : )

On another note, I don't see what business it is of any one here to judge Mr. Netanyahu's wife, her decision to be involved or not is no one's business and a person's spouse is certainly not yours! Busybodies!

Chasiva v'chasima tova Bibi!

You're right, Weizman could have and should have asked. It was an ideal opportunity that was weakly cast aside, haval! We should learn from this. But ultimately, while we do the actions, it is HaShem who makes determine's the outcome. We can only do our very best, hope for the best result and know that no effort is ever lost. Shana Tova

I would like to say that there is a comunist revolution in process inside Brazil nowadays. They folow ideology of Gramsci and his international revolution. Exactly the same revolution that has taken the media. They suppor the arabs incondionally. They need to destroy the jewish people on the same idealistic conditions of the arabs. They will never accept our reasons. Please, understand that the enemy is not only the palestinians. They have got a network arround the world and their objectives has never changed.

Hello Mr. Netanyahu:

Youare an inspiration to many American Jews and non-Jews.

How can we support you both financially and non-financially to

become the next Prime Minister of Israel. The U.S. and Israel needs you A.S.A.P..

31  |   Seth Patinkin, Friday Sep 07, 2007

I agree that Jabotinsky and Natanyahu exhibit some subtle differences regarding their proclivity to cut up our land and further disseminate the Jewish people.

32  |   Aryeh, Friday Sep 07, 2007

Dear Mr. Prime Minister,

What if we try an entirely new approach? We see a clear pattern wherein our leaders recognise threats, address them to various degrees and inevitably, the Jewish people suffer greatly at the hands of our enemies. Only then do we realise that we are indeed our worst enemies, either by means of our negligence or oversight or failure to adequately deal with national threats. At some point, every Jewish person comes to terms with the fact that no matter how strong we are, or how clever or how prepared, we always seem to get knocked down by history and it would seem furthermore that while the nations grow and prosper, and we are kept alive only by means of divine decree. Alas, we must learn from our new enemies the lessons they have imposed upon us and which threaten to destroy us once again. To that end, how can we continue to follow tiny men like Jabotinsky and Hertzl whilst ignoring the giants who bore their fathers and whose great wisdom was diminished to a vapour by contrast? Our Torah gives us the precise formula for success, even Hertzl could not deny that. In our determination to continue our momentum, we seem to miss the nail with the hammer despite ourselves, no? Only when the Jewish Nation is united will we succeed-- this is not surprising, but there is only one way for that to happen without another catastrophe and I pray that those with influence will stand up and say "Not by my hands, nor by my might, nor by my calculation were we let into our Land, but by the Mighty, Outstretched Hand of Hashem were we led to serve him on this One Holy Shabbat." Mr. Prime Minister, would you be strong enough to utter those words before our entire Nation, and the world? Would you go before the United Nations and declare that G-d is One, His Torah is One, and we are his One Nation and by right of our sanctifying the Covenant of Shabbat, we assert our claim to all? Do you have the strength to make such a statement? There is no other way to end our suffering and bring this exile to an end. Shabat Shalom.

Mr.Bibi

Receiv an salutation fron Movement Making the Peace in Brazil. I believe that the proclamation by UN of Palestine State is today the only way wise and inteligent for the peace.

34  |   Eli, Monday Sep 10, 2007

"Jews did not excel in recognizing the existence of the collective threats nor did they excel in implementing actions to curb them".

It scraes me to think that Israel as a nation has become complacement and behaves as though there is no threat to its existence. Jewish popultion is shrinking while moslems are gaining in numbers. These are facts that the left is Israel is not prepared to accpt nor is it willing to undertake steps to mitigate such risks.

Mr. Netanyahu, it is up to you. Force new elections so Israel can finally get a fair government in place.

35  |   John Profit, Tuesday Sep 11, 2007

Now, after Zikim you must speak up for a military response. If you don't, your're just as weak and no better than Olmert

36  |   superd9132, Monday Sep 17, 2007

I think Mr.Natanyahu has the balls to do whatever has to be done to stop the Iranian threat. Please do not wait for the U.S. to do something. If Pres.Bush doesn't do something while he's still in office and the Demos. win the election Isreal will be on there on anyway. Somebody has to do something before it's too late. If Iran stalls long enough and obtains NUKES they will destroy Isreal and hold the free worlde hostage. Remeber the Iraq Nuke facilities, Isreal took care of that sitiuation without anybody finding out untill afterwards. Once again Iran needs to go.the question is what country will suffer the most if they complete their task. I belive Isreal and the U.S. will pay the price therefore they need to step up and destroy Iran. Remeber all that diplomacy will do is give iran more time to accomplish theit mission.

37  |   yerachmiel, Tuesday Sep 18, 2007

Dear Mr. Netanyou, It is warming to see the regard that you have for Jabotinsky. What would this visionary have done had he lived in the present era. Would the fiasco of the second Lebonon War occurred? Would Iran still be busy plotting the destruction of Israel with impunity? Would the government of Israel keep on slicing off pieces of G-d's promised land in exchange for the Arabs empty promises? When you had your chance to lead why weren't you inspired by Jabotinsky?. I missed it if you were.

38  |   Elcie May Field, Thursday Sep 20, 2007

Survival of "freedom of choice" is up for grabs worldwide. It can only exist as world governments remain free. Freedom of choice in religion, speech, and all individual aspects of life that DOES NOT harm others, nor force others into conformity, can only be extended by those who believe in freedom... And the idea of freedom comes from those who believe in the God who allows us to be free, and who gives us the right to make our own decision. The Islamic Allah gives no such choice!

Free peoples of the world must unite together to resist this new influx of tyranny upon the world stage, but will they? Are we as inclined to make a stand for the values of these ideals as we once were? If those of us who love God and freedom do not preserve our families, and our way of life, we cannot preserve anyone anywhere. Will we allow evil men and evil ideals to destroy us all? Just how passive have we become? Are we so passive as to allow the destruction of everything that has made our life remarkable? Selfish men with evil and selfish intents will never preserve anything but themselves. What will we preserve? What is worth fighting and dieing to preserve? I want my grandchild to live free, as I have lived, and to be able to worship God without threat to his life and family. My ancestors paid a price for my freedom, and I appreciate their sacrifice... now I must consider what I must do for my future generations. Those who love God and the remarkable freedom His Word brings must not retreat from the face of this evil, but trust in God to preserve US who have faith in His Word.

A Palestinian state will not satisfy the bloodlust terrorism directed at Israel; it will only make infiltration of suicide bombers easier. Bartering with an enemy that has sworn the destruction of Israel and her people is

a fool's paradise. Better that Israel

go it alone, intact and with integrity,

than to fall victim to a Palestinian tripwire of lethal rhetoric and stelth.

40  |   Patty Cunningham, Monday Oct 01, 2007

The sad thing is...the enemies of Israel do not care if an Israeli would convert to Islam or any other religion. There is not rationale for the thinking that exists except ignorance and jealousy. There will always be those who want to force their will on those they deem less than them. I truly do not know why Israel should have to give one inch of land to anyone. Their nation is so tiny and giving away ocean front land to those who want their end is very odd. I am trying to understand...

41  |   John Profit, Wednesday Oct 03, 2007

Back in July you said "Replace the Government now". What will you say/do when the current "peace process" implodes? You can't hide in the weeds forever!

42  |   Ralph Bousum, Friday Oct 05, 2007

The resh and mem Bibi, stand in the center and bring the rain.

43  |   John Profit, Sunday Oct 07, 2007

Bibi: I'm sure you know this "peace process" is doomed to fail simply because the other side has no concept of compromise. Compromise to Islamic fascist equates to weakness and they will never engage in it. It will soon be time for "Fortress Israel". Carve out your boarders, wall the Arabs out and arm yourselves to the eyeballs all the while telling the world this is how it's going to be so deal with it. What other options do you have?

44  |   jack hennessee, Monday Oct 08, 2007

I fail to understand the Jewish community in the US. They follow and support the left that given power would throw Israel to the wolves in order to prevent facing the real monsters in this era and save their own skins politically.I hope Bibi wins out in government, it's Israels best hope for survival and beware of Mr.Putin, not as he seems!

45  |   Diamond, Monday Oct 08, 2007

Bibi,

I agree completely with your statements concerning Olmert's deal to turn over parts of Jerusalem to Palestinians. Didn't we already learn from our previous errors in Lebanon and Gaza that you can't leave and expect everything to be ok?

The reason I am concerned about this deal is because Israel is, like usual, giving "too much" to the Palestinians, but not getting anything in return.

Olmert is a lawyer, not a leader, I think he highlighted that aspect in the war in Lebanon last summer.

I don't know much about the political scene over there, but I think it would be in Israel's interest to see Bibi Netanyahu running the show once again.

46  |   Tomas Bruney, Friday Oct 12, 2007

Bibi;

It is very good that you are refering to historical archives and learning from them. Please do not forget Tanakh as that is the best history to refer to. There is much Jewish history that has been distorted over the last few centuries. I even seen Naked Archeology and I could not believe how Rome had descrated the Jewish burial sites, but there is evidence of our error there in a place I believe is Beth Shemiah or something like that. Mazeltav to Simcha. Talk to Simcha.

Dead men do tell tales. I praised YHWH for the menorah and the preservation of truth.

47  |   Tomas Bruney, Friday Oct 12, 2007

Bibi;

Many people on this page sound like Ha Shatan talking in both ears. Do not look to the left or the right and keep YHWH's Book in your heart and before your eyes, "Do not let this book depart from your mouth" Bind it around your neck as Yah has said.

48  |   Tomas Bruney, Friday Oct 12, 2007

Bibi;

I would like to shift gears from my previous statements and address the issue of Israel being able to see future threats or existing threats. The State Of Israel is being led by the nose by too many other nations who want to badger and wave their finger at Israel for it trying to protect itself. Israel's intelligence needs to be improved and it needs to have better assets in place. Israel must not trust everything its allies say; (Primarily the U.S.. Israel needs to stop getting second hand information and also needs to revamp its economy in order for it to stand on its own with Ha Shem. There are too many fingers in the cake batter. Economic reform and better intelligence should be the highest priority as well as better defense spending. Israel is not cold war America, but yet it is in the middle of a somewhat hot war with terrorism that cam escalate into full scale war. The United States is playing something very not in the interest of Israel's national security.

49  |   Tomas Bruney, Friday Oct 12, 2007

Bibi;

I am still reading your article. I am down to about little more than half way. I read about Russian being a partner. It is good have diplomacy with Russia, but if they have diplomatic ties to Iran and have help them to build their nuclear reactor, then they should be approached carefully. It is good to maintain dialogue with the Russians and to have a kind of openness but beware of their making demands. Russia is not Jewish and they have interest just like the E.U. and U.S.. They also need money.

50  |   Tomas Bruney, Monday Oct 15, 2007

Regarding #48; I want to expand a little. The United States is surrounding Israel with enemies while regarding them as moderates and democratic. Just today Condi rice announces "Now is time to create a Palestinian State"; and just two years ago Prime Minister Olmert was announcing a desire to draw up the borders by 2010. The U.S. and Britain were putting the brakes on the idea if my perception is correct. Who is really in charge of Israel's sovereignty?

51  |   Terrye Richards, Wednesday Oct 17, 2007

Jerusalem belongs to the Jews alone. In this particular situation do not listen!

52  |   John Profit, Wednesday Oct 17, 2007

Bibi: It will be up to you to pick up the pieces after Olmert. What will you do?

53  |   michael david, Wednesday Oct 17, 2007

The pressure Israel faces today, is not from the arabs. The real challange is dealling with the corrupt western governments. U.S.A., E.U. and the U.N. Condi Rice, Tony Blair, Terry Larson theese are the true villans that Israel faces.

54  |   michael david, Wednesday Oct 17, 2007

Bibi, you are the man. Lets get together with India and leeve the west behind. The west could never feel our pain. Not while the Saudi's are buying up the whole western world. Stay strong Bibi we love you sir.. M.D
