I met former US president Jimmy Carter on June 14th and left the meeting profoundly unsettled.

It was a cordial meeting: Shaul Goldstein, the mayor of Gush Etzion had been approached by Carter's staff because in 30 years of peacemaking, Carter had not visited any settlements. I imagine Carter wanted to improve his tarnished image. There was seemingly a dialogue, and yet the meeting revealed the chasm between us. I suspect that the chasm has to do with divergent basic assumptions that are grounded in religious belief and are very rarely discussed. It is not so much the idea of peace that separated us at that meeting as the idea of grace, a Christian belief that as far as I know has no parallel in Jewish thought. Carter didn't talk about grace yet somehow I suspect that we can't understand him, a proud Christian Baptist, until we understand that idea.

I was not so eager to meet Mr. Carter because of his seemingly anti-Israel positions. But I wanted to tell him my son's story. The meeting took place on the same day as my son Koby's birthday. He would have had turned 22. Instead he lies in a grave, murdered by terrorists. I showed Carter a picture of my beautiful 13-year-old son and told him "I want you to make sure that the world understands that I am not to blame for my son's death because I live in a settlement. The Palestinians cannot pretend that despair over land fuels their rage; it is hate pure and simple. They too have a choice and we cannot allow their suffering to be a rationale for terror."

The meeting was amiable, a dialogue. And yet something continues to nag me. And that something has to do with religious beliefs. Mr. Carter proudly told us that as a Sunday school teacher in his hometown of Plains he was about to give his 500th lesson which he teaches from the Old and New Testaments. Therefore, he said, he understands the way a person's thinking can be shaped by his faith.

He told us  that as a Christian he believes that Christ was a prince of peace. This belief may lead him to think that peace is necessary at any cost. Because he was able to engineer a peace with Egypt he imagines that he can do so with the Palestinians.

Yet there is a flaw in his thinking. And that may have to do with Christian idea of grace, the idea of unearned favor. The Greek word for grace is caris. Its basic idea is unearned favor, an unearned gift,  blessings bestowed  freely and not as merit for work performed. This goodness can then cause a sinner to be redeemed and change his behavior. One is "saved" and becomes a better person.

This idea of an unearned gift, that God rewards the fallen on earth with grace not because we deserve it but because we don't is problematic.

The concept of grace may underpin Carter's belief that one should reward the Palestinians, even if many in their society honor terrorists and condone violence because in that way, the Palestinians can be transformed into "good" people. They will be "saved." Despite the fact that Palestinians haven't made concrete steps toward peace like renouncing terrorism and violence, they will somehow be converted by showering love (money, land, legitimacy) on them.

Perhaps the idea of justice becomes perverted by the Christian mandate for mercy.

Carter may very much want to be a prince of peace like Christ. But a prince has to practice both kindness and justice, not just compassion. The danger of grace is that one will pardon those who practice cruelty. Carter believes that if we give enough to the Palestinians they will respect Israel and create a state that will not be an enemy to Israel. But that thinking has no precedent in the reality in which we live.

Look at what happened in Gaza. As soon as we "gave" the Palestinians the land, they elected a leader who is sworn to abolishing the Jewish state.

Kindness, giving without limits or conditions, can also be destructive. And giving with the wishful thinking that kindness will transform the Palestinians is a kind of delusion.

We Jews have a saying: he who is kind to the cruel, will end up being cruel to the kind.

1  |   toby brookyn, ny, Thursday Jun 18, 2009 Sherri and Seth you have been an inspiration to me since the brutal murder of your son. Your dignity in the face of the horror of a lifetime and your willingness to speak out against those that perpetuate terror in any form fly in the face of those who claim that terror begets terror. You are a shining example to the world of dignified human behaviour. May god bless you and your family with peace and comfort.
2  |   Crystal, Keysville, VA, USA, Thursday Jun 18, 2009 Please don't think that all Christians believe as Carter does. I can't understand the trials that Israelis go through because I don't live there. I do know that the land of Israel is for the Jews. I do not believe that the Palestinians will lay down their weapons if they were to receive a state. Carter does not speak for this Christian. And he certainly doesn't speak for this American!
3  |   ter Kuile G J, Calgary, Alberta ,Canada., Friday Jun 19, 2009 Do not let this "clown " Jimmy Carter into Israel for he is anti Israel and pro Palestinians. Do not trust Obama either for his speech in Cairo was just a farce.
4  |   mark, Friday Jun 19, 2009 Sherri shared the tragic story of her son Koby's senseless murder to our synagogue congregation in Connecticut this past Autumn..Sad, pathetic and heart wrenching are the emotions I experience. Her thoughts re: Carter may be spot on, but my sense is that Carter is just another Jew hater. How else to explain the moral equivalence of one of the sorriest of American presidents, how else can one rationalize his fraternization with such a despiacable group of avowed cold blooded terrorists? The current president is no better, just another demagogue.
5  |   chris pariseau, Friday Jun 19, 2009 I do not know what it is to lose a son. I do not know what it is to live in Israel. I pray for you and pray for Israel. I do know what it is to be a born again believer. God says to pray for the peace of Israel and I do. Be of a good courage. Israel don't give into politics. It's easier said than done but God.
6  |   Jay, USA, Friday Jun 19, 2009 "Grace" from the Christian perspetive is a unique gift from God. The fact that it's "unearned" MAKES it unique. Grace can be thought of as "space" to find God after sin. In the Christian context, Grace can NOT truly be extended by humans since it is divine. We depend on Grace to give us time to accept Christ and to make mistakes (sin) which require forgiveness. "Amazing Grace how sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me" is a hymn verse which best describes the concept of God's Grace. Carter's zeal for Peace probably has it's origin in Christianity but "Grace" is not Carter's to "give".
7  |   john williams, Friday Jun 19, 2009 Perhaps the idea of justice becomes perverted by the Christian mandate for mercy. Can you tell me after looking at the death rate of the Palestinians versus the Israelis how you can make such an absurd statement. The Palestinians have been shown no mercy. With settler snipers and the IDF checkpoints how can you say this.
8  |   Prof. Jerry, Dallas TX USA, Friday Jun 19, 2009 Grace is problematic, but not alien to Judaism. Torah is a provision of grace, it is given to a people who had the habit of acting badly and who needed correction for redemption. But, it presumes that the recipient will divinely recognize the gift and alter behavior accordingly. If one wants to be "biblical"--and look at numbers--most people do not wish to recognize the divine or gift. Certainly if they're not seeking the Divine, because they have their own alternative. How do you correct someone who believes their actions are already "righteous", as Islam teaches intolerance to Jews?
9  |   Toby Klein Greenwald, Efrat, Friday Jun 19, 2009 Sherri, Thank you so much for this column, which explains so eloquently a problem that I believe goes much farther than Carter even. You have revealed what may be at the core of the thinking of many western leaders.
10  |   Marsha in NJ, USA, Friday Jun 19, 2009 Dear Rabbi and Sherri...I believe that having gone through the unspeakable horror of having lost a child, you will always be counted among the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem...and as such you had every right to tell the former president that turning the other cheek is not a Jewish concept...
11  |   Bob Fruehling USA, Friday Jun 19, 2009 Sherri, I am sorry that you have been given a warped concept of 'Grace'. The prophets warned ancient Israel about treading on grace (God's goodness). The writers of the NT part of the Bible also gave warning about assuming on grace. Jesus said 'By their fruit (or deeds) you will know them'. God knows the righteous. For many 'Christians' it is just a term.
12  |   jan Netherlands, Friday Jun 19, 2009 So what solution do u propose? If you see the Palestinians as baseless haters whom not even an act of undeserved favor can motivate to feel their Jewish brothers as their family, then what? Instead of asking for Jewish grace, the peace seekers should ask for Palestinian complete submission, so that Israel can show compassion with such sad souls who have finally seen the light? Do you truly expect such outcome? How, since though the Jews have suffered greatly and probably more than any, they have suffered greatly too? That a people who know persecution so well, now persecute others, is insane.
13  |   Lindy Robertson Jr., Friday Jun 19, 2009 Jimmy Carter is a renegade Baptist. I don't know of hardly any Baptist who agrees with his radical views. Myself, I have to question whether Carter is even a Christian. Just because a person calls themselves a Christian doesn't mean they are one. Carter was the worst president America ever had. He was totally incompetent and his presidency probably rates at the bottom of the list. Almost all Baptists I know are very pro-Israel and believe that Jerusalem and all of the area around it belong to the Jewish people forever. So don't be misled by Jimmy Carter. He is just a derelict.
14  |   Bill Yeary USA, Friday Jun 19, 2009 Excellent article Sherri. May God richly bless you. Let me tell you that I am a Christian who does not understand Mr. Carter at all. Grace is a free gift from God to all the world. However it can be received by man (& completed) only when man repents of his evil and receives his new nature through Christ. When man, without the new nature, attempts to be as giving as God in the area of grace, he usually ends "casting pearls before swine", as Jesus admonished his disciples not to do. Sometimes people forget that without the Jew, there would be not Christian. Thank you, Sherri
15  |   jerusalem, Friday Jun 19, 2009 Dear Sherri, I was very impressed with what you wrote abour your meeting with Carter. I edited it, since I am an editor, and I wonder if you are interested in seeing my edition (no charge), and maybe trying to have it published on the op-ed page of the NYTimes. Please let me know if you are interested. tania.susskind@gmail.com (we know each other)
16  |   T. Traub, Arizona USA, Friday Jun 19, 2009 Turning the other cheek is indeed a Jewish concept. Almost every idea espoused by Christianity and Islam came originally from Judaism, starting with the idea of one God. As commenter Jay says, grace is not something a man can confer. It is something one receives from the universe, from God, from doing good to others. If the Palestinian Arabs want peace, they should demonstrate it by behaving peacefully. If they want autonomy, they should behave like a nation instead of a gang of thugs. Never in history has such an undeserving people been given so much.
17  |   Jen USA, Friday Jun 19, 2009 Sherri, Did Carter actually discuss the concept of grace with you? You ramble on about why you disagree with the idea of extending a hand in peace (you believe that all Palestinians are anti-Semetic terrorists) but never mention what you actually discussed with Pres. Carter. I was looking forward to reading your post. Once again, your words reveal your disdain for other faiths and opinions. So many children have been senselessly murdered, on both sides. I would think that you, of all people, would understand that the model of "an eye for an eye" will leads not to justice, only despair.
18  |   Kurt, USA, Friday Jun 19, 2009 The writer seems to misunderstand the Gospels meaning of grace. It is also accomplished by the command to sin no more. Jesus also believed in justice. If you continue in your sins, you shall die. Wages of sin is death, ect. As for former President Carter, who knows where he gets his beliefs, but very few that I have heard attributed to him can be supported by the Bible's commands for how a christian is suppose to treat people, especially the apple of G-d's eye and his chosen people, the Jews. From what I see Carter, does not believe the Bible as more than a good moral story.
19  |   CLL Tampa, FL USA, Friday Jun 19, 2009 #16 Exactly! Carter is still in search of a legacy, and instead will simply go down as the worst President in US history, Obama may be 2nd, an anti-Semite, and in the my view a very poor Christian. Grace indeed! The Carter types are the same as the original Catholics that forgot that Jesus Christ was a Jew and had no intention of changing anything except the hearts of mankind. Carter courts oil money for his library, just like all the rest, Clinton & Bush as well. He is a senile old fool that should never be allowed into Israel. He does enough damage here!
20  |   Dana, Friday Jun 19, 2009 Grace, and salvation, although unmerited, are for the repentant. Those against Israel (God's chosen people) will receive judgement from the God of the Old Testament who sent THE Prince of Peace, His Son, the Messiah to redeem those to Himself who believe in Him. Mr. Carter is incorrect in his understanding of grace, and I would not refer to him as being a Christian. Those who ARE also understand that Israel belongs to the Jewish people, a gift from God, because Abraham BELIEVED God and it was counted to him as righteousness. Salvation has alway come by believing God, not by our own righteousness.
21  |   matteo d'agostino, italy, Friday Jun 19, 2009 why is it that israelis see the evil that palestinians do to israelis, and so they're labelled terrorists, and yet they fail to see the inimaginable evil that the israelis perpetrate on to the enslaved palestinians daily. is the life of a palestinian worth so much less than the life of an israeli? thank you.
22  |   Lee JH Chiago, Friday Jun 19, 2009 Ms. Mandell makes a quantum leap making assumptions and then laying out what Mr. Carter thinks as if it were fact. Many of the respondants take up the cue and continue the assumption that Mr. Carter's whole conception of peace between Israel and the Palestinians (and the rest of the Arab world) should be based on the ephemeral idea of Grace that has no place in discussions such as these. I do not know what Mr. Carter thinks, but whatever it is it is too fuzzy to contemplate.
23  |   charles white, USA, Saturday Jun 20, 2009 Jimmy Carter is not a friend of Israel. Neither is Obama even though the Jews in the USA voted overwhelmning for him in the election. For the first time since you were declared a State you are on your own. God help us all.
24  |   Joseph Lessard, USA, Saturday Jun 20, 2009 Islam is a religion of intolerance. Islam sees grace, forgiveness, and meekness as weakness. The goal of Islam is world domination in the name of Allah--period, end of story. All they understand is violence. Peace to them means a break from fighting to rearm. The liberals like Carter never seem to notice that Islam still practices slavery; islam treats women as beasts of burden, and 90% of the violence in the world is caused by Muslim nations and groups attacking nonmuslims. Carter is weak and to meek. Stick to peanut farming Jimmy. You were awful at world leadership.
25  |   Minutman, CAlifornia USA, Saturday Jun 20, 2009 Israel's ambassador to the United Nations, Dan Gillerman, called former President Jimmy Carter "a bigot" for meeting with the leader of Hamas,in Syria. Carter "went to the region with soiled hands and came back with bloody hands after shaking the hand of Khaled Mashaal, the leader of Hamas," the Islamo-Fascist controlling Gaza. Ambassador Dan Gillerman told reporters at a luncheon briefing, 4-25-2008. Carter visit to Israel is only to amplify his Jew hatred reflected in his books.
26  |   Don from Palatine, Saturday Jun 20, 2009 Carter should go back to Georgia and grow peanuts. He is out of touch with the reality of arab barbarism. These arabs deserve nothing from us Jews, only from their bigoted brothers who never help them and only kill each other. Give them a state in central africa or on the moon.
27  |   David USA, Saturday Jun 20, 2009 The personification of Grace is the Gaza Dr.Abu al-Aish whose three daughters plus other relatives were murdered by the IDF during the atrocious Cast Lead, yet incredibly he held no grudge and continued to minister to his patients. The man is a saint. The very opposite of the settler "rabbi"who preached the killing of men, women and children - and even "the cattle".- (per recent article).
28  |   Jacob USA, Sunday Jun 21, 2009 to Matteo - Let's say that when Vatican City became soveriegn nation the surrounding nations attacked it and claimed that nation had no right to exist as a Catholic entity. A war ensues and the Vatican recognizes the surrounding nations as legitimate but the nations who attacked Vatican City refuse to accept its existance. Would the Vatican city be equally responsible for the war that ensued? What would you tell someone who made the same aurguement you make against the Vatican? I
29  |   Mark Redding, CA, Sunday Jun 21, 2009 There is no mercy without justice. Former President Carter appears to ignore most of what the Old and New Testament teaches about the Jews and Israel and that is why most people who call themselves Christian can barely tolerate a word out of his mouth. Gentiles who believe the scriptures are deeply endeared to the Jews of Israel and may constitute your nation's strongest support - possibly even more than the "liberal" Jews of America who helped vote in Mr Obama, a man who thinks very much like Mr Carter. The "Christian Right" voted against Obama and for Israel.
30  |   MIllee ,Tx, Monday Jun 22, 2009 I am a southern Baptist who loves Israel and believes Jimmy Carter caused so much of the problems we have now. I voted for him once but then Reagan was my choice. The media here pushed Obama an inexperienced jr senator who is NO friend to Israel. I believe our country has been blessed because we have helped Israel but if we choose to side with her enemy's well I believe we will lose that blessing from God. You have millions of folks who side with Israel over here who pray for peace in Jerusalem.
31  |   C in USA, Monday Jun 22, 2009 S - your statements, “Look at what happened in Gaza. As soon as we "gave" the Palestinians the land, they elected a leader who is sworn to abolishing the Jewish state.” Yeah, you gave them the land, continued to control their water resources, inflicted sporadic closures to make economic progress difficult, and flat out restricted their ability to exert any kind of control. The land you gave them? Re-think that. At least, Carter can reach out his hand and start a dialogue with people without judgment or bias. When’s the last time you had a conversation with a Palestinian?
32  |   Jen USA, Tuesday Jun 23, 2009 #27 David, Dr. Abu al-Aish is a true hero. I saw him on television and was struck by his wisdom, humanity, honor, his open heart and yes... his grace. Parents who have lost children, on both sides of this conflict, could learn from him.
33  |   NAVIN USA, Tuesday Jun 23, 2009 The state of Israel is a nationalist and essentially racist state, the fight between palestine and israel will eventually lead to the annihilation of your "HOLY LAND". Maybe then the rest of the world can stop being bothered by both of these selfish groups who cant see past their own foolish propaganda. Fanatics are the true race of the region
34  |   sg, USA, Wednesday Jun 24, 2009 Mr Carter's understanding of grace is not shared by the majority of Christians, certainly not by Evangelicals. Grace is the gift of God given to the undeserving because they have chosen to follow him and repent. The grace advocated by Mr. Carter is what Rev. Detrick Bonhauffer called "cheap grace." That is: forgiveness without repentance or a declaration of guilt by the sinner.
35  |   Sherri Tekoa, Wednesday Jun 24, 2009 sg I am very interested in this concept of "cheap grace." Can you or somebody else tell me more about it?
36  |   Ron Brown Houston, Texas, Tuesday Jul 14, 2009 Please read. Your conclusions about grace and how it is applied or administered by God are incorrect. You did use the word "may." That is an opinion and I believed a contrived one so you can argue about Carter. I am a Chirstian. I tell you that Carter is full of crap. All those who love God love Israel and her people. God gave you the land and it is yours to keep. Carter if a fool and does not speak for the Christians I know. Again, he is full of crap! May God continue to bless you and your people. Also, Sherri Tekoa, grace is not cheap. Jesus life was the price.
37  |   ben sydney, Wednesday Jul 15, 2009 Just a comment.. you all seem like you enjoy being victims and squeezing it for all its worth..... its time to move on the worlds youth are tired of this....the whoever you dont agree with is a jew hater rant... its really old.
38  |   Jean - Georgia, Wednesday Jul 29, 2009 Cheap Grace is what many churches have been pedding for centuries. You're saved, you're covered by grace, all your sins are forgiven, past, present, future. You don't need "LAW". The Jewish scriptures are OLD, therefore irrelevant. The Jewish people are no longer the Chosen people because now they foillow the "LAW" All you need is faith./// Sherri, these are all lies and distortions used by the Church to whip up people against the Jews. Just like the pope granted forgiveness ahead of time to the crusaders for any crimes they might commit, the church has been involved in many awful things.
39  |   Jean - Georgia, Wednesday Jul 29, 2009 In my opinion,Mr.Carter is a modern-day Martin Luther-he preaches love but teaches something else. The true concept of grace is based on the knowledge of the love of G-D for all His creation. When we accept that & want a relationship with the G-D of Israel, we accept the Jewish scriptures as truth. We attempt (not always succeeding) to follow commandments because we love G-D of Israel & want to please Him. Willfully doing wrong is mocking G-D & throwing away the gift of grace. Cheap grace is thinking you can mock G-D & get away with it. That's what I think-someone else may say it better.
40  |   Jean - Georgia, Friday Jul 31, 2009 #37 If you can't stand the "victim mentality" in the Jpost blogs, then leave and move over to the palestinian blogs and listen to some real victim mentality from the Authors of the Terrorist Infitada I and II and III. Enjoy.
41  |   Linda Springfield Illinois U.S.A., Sunday Aug 02, 2009 Cheap grace is cherry-picking scripture, quoting scripture out of text, and believing that G-d is just a G-d of tolerance and love rather than a G-d of both salvation and wrath. These false leaders believe that most scripture is allegorical and full of moral stories, not the literally inspired Word of the Most High. They believe truth is relative, and as such, all beliefs are true; there is no absolute truth. Our president now is not a follower of Christ as he claims, he has no respect for the Jews or the followers of the risen Christ, and he and his administration despise those of us who are.

Jen USA: Elise, I would trust the Justice Department before the CIA, any day. The first is held accountable for their actions. The second rarely is. The lack of response to Sherri's email is sad. Whether Koby's case has been shelved because it is cold or if there is simply a communication breakdown, someone should be available to talk to family members about any case that remains unsolved. I do not think that Sherri should expect the JD to contact her. I would suggest that she write her congressman or congresswoman. If she is still a tax-paying, voting American, her representative will listen.
Shahab Mohd Altaf INDIA: Justice is equal treatment. It means desire for your brother/sister, what you desire for yourself, this is the Islamic concept of Justice.Further the victim is given the right to decide the nature of punishment. This is called Qasas or blood money. The loss of life cannot be compensated but atleast the pain can be reduced.HumanLife is more important than human rights. Terrorists have no religion.
Elise: I am sorry for the loss of your child. I do not understand why you are confused that the Obama administration has refused to list your son as a victim of terror. This would go against their belief that Jews have no right to live where you do. This is a Justice Department that seeks no justice and is so politicized that they ended a probe into voter intimidation by Black Panthers and attacks those that keep us safe(CIA). This is a State Dept. that is inherently anti-semitic even before the advent of the Obama Admn. Justice will not becoming from this Adminsitration. Why are you surprised?
