Dear President Obama,

This week the entire country of Israel performed a security exercise. At 11:00am a siren sounded and all of us, every man, woman and child had to take shelter. At a home for seniors who are Alzheimer's patients, it took much longer than the allotted 3 minutes for the staff to help find these patients protection. (They were pushed in their wheelchairs to sit next to an interior wall.) This whole country is a target for attack. All of us are imperiled.

Our situation is untenable. But your remedy, to get the Jews out of the Palestinian territories so that peace can ensue is naïve. Before 1967 the Jews were out of the Palestinian territories, and there was still a lack of peace. The last disengagement of the Jews from Gush Katif did not lead to peace but to repeated attacks on Sderot and Ashkelon and the southern periphery.

You err when you believe that this conflict is about the settlements. It is a conflict about the Jews' authentic connection to this land, a connection that began with our Biblical forefathers and mothers and continues today through our historic and unyielding attachment to Jerusalem, the home of our ancient temple. You can give all the settlements away to the Palestinians, and they will still attack us for the rest of Israel. For they don't believe that we have a right to this land.

Furthermore, you who are so attached to your children should realize that when you talk about settlements, you are not just discussing a political issue. You are talking about the homes of the families of hundreds of thousands of Jews, some of whom were expelled from their homes in Arab countries, others who survived the Russian Gulag or the Holocaust.

We are vibrant communities with very strong connections to the people with whom we live. When my 13-year-old son Koby was murdered here in Tekoa by Arab terrorists (beaten to death with rocks), it was the community that supported our family for years, making us meals, doing our laundry, learning with us, praying with us, crying with us.

Also, by squelching our growth, you are taking away our democratic right to live where we want. I would like to see you try to legislate a similar law in New York City, home of many Jews. Tell the Jews that they can't allow their communities to grow. Or perhaps limit the number of dwellings for African-Americans in Chicago. Tell them that nobody can build a home or even add on a bedroom. The thought is preposterous. Yet you offer it as your first foreign policy objective in the Middle East under the guise of honesty.

Your desire for honesty can be disingenuous. A policy that is so highly discriminatory cannot be called honest.

By limiting natural growth, you are saying to me that my children will not be able to live here. Our communities are so vibrant that when our children marry they very often want to stay in their hometown. So in effect, you are discriminating against the young who will not be able to live in their own communities. In this way, you may turn the settlements into old age homes eventually because only those who are already here will be able to stay.

Moreover, by limiting growth here, you will limit our ability to survive. In that case, our communities will be taken over by Palestinians. But that may be your intent.

Consider this: I will not be allowed to visit the place my son was murdered or even his grave because the Palestinians won't allow us into their villages. In any case, I know some would most likely celebrate the place of my son's murder.

If the Palestinians don't believe that we have an authentic connection to any of this land and if you reinforce that thought with a policy that hints of Judenrien - then you contribute to further conflict in the Middle East. If you reward their tactics of terror with gifts of land, your policies will backfire. The only place we are heading if we leave the settlements is to a greater conflagration.

1  |   Svetlana in Canada, Thursday Jun 04, 2009 Excellent article. May G-d bless your community and the whole nation of Israel.
2  |   Michael- U.S.A., Thursday Jun 04, 2009 I just wanted you to know that we names our son koby in honor of your son so he is not forgotten.
3  |   David Cohen, Sydney, Australia, Thursday Jun 04, 2009 The man's arrogance is astounding. Hubris. Pride comes before a fall. Watch your step, Obama.
4  |   DJ, Thursday Jun 04, 2009 Who lived in israel before the jews? Whoever it was, maybe we should just give the whole land to them, and be done with your childish assertion of historical and religious primacy. Claiming an authentic connection to the land is vague and spurious, and will simply prolong indefinitely the search for peace in your land. You liken Obama's demand that settlements be closed to a hypothetical segregation of NYC. Excuse my ignorance, but is it not you who are segregating - or put another way, exactly how many Palestinians live in the settlements?
5  |   Maxine in Toronto, Thursday Jun 04, 2009 Wow, you really missed his whole point...that's too bad.
6  |   Olenka, Thursday Jun 04, 2009 Can any of the millions of Palestinians in refugee camps in Gaza or the West Bank, or Lebanon or Jordan visit the places their parents or grandparents were killed? Many died in 1948 and 1967, including civilians, yet there is no freedom of movement for these people to visit Jaffa, or Haifa or Jerusalem! This is why a 2 state solution won't work. You need to learn to live side by side in a binational state with guaranteed minority rights.
7  |   Kevin, USA, Thursday Jun 04, 2009 I really feel for the people of Israel. It comes as no surprise that Obama is turning away from Israel. During his campaign he reassured everyone that he would always support Israel but, as everyone can see, his word means absolutely nothing. The left wing always thinks that all one has to do is talk and be nice to your enemies and everything will be alright. Giving Palestine a state on its own will do nothing to end the aggression towards Israel, just make it easier.
8  |   ahmed, Thursday Jun 04, 2009 god bless your son, but any body have any idea how many Palestinian child have been killed during the last 20 years, i don't think so any way we need to open a new page in which we all accept each other and no more kills am talking to the young people who believe in change and peace we need to change w need to accept each other god bless your son and god bless all the innocent people what ever the religion they believe in
9  |   prabhakar gupta india, Thursday Jun 04, 2009 refreshing perspective
10  |   Said, London, Thursday Jun 04, 2009 I point you, sir, to the comment made by a senior PA member who stated (I read it in this newspaper, no less) that the Israeli settlers could take on Palestinian citizenship, with all that it entails, without having to move. Any response?
11  |   ApostasyUSA, Thursday Jun 04, 2009 "Dear Barack, do not reward terror with gifts" = "Don't make any concessions toward peace because you might collapse our economy which is based on lots of military spending.".......... Israel has the tenth largest arms industry in the world, and makes up twenty percent of the country's employment. If Israel has no enemies, its economy might collapse. Karl Marx made the case that military spending is necessary and useful for capitalism; does Israel agree?
12  |   Annie in California, Thursday Jun 04, 2009 Ms. Mandell, My heart weeps for the pain you and your family have suffered. I fear you are right about Obama's "Dream of Peace" speech in Cairo. Khadafi once referred to one of Obama's campaign speeches as a "clearance sale" of politics and that once Obama got into office, we would see that he is truly a brother of the Muslim world. I pray that Khadafi is wrong and that Israel is not on the "clearance sale" rack.
13  |   Morey Israel, Thursday Jun 04, 2009 Well said...until we reach a point where Jews can be allowed to live in that vision of a Palestinian state, the same way that Muslims and Christians are welcome to live in the the State of Israel, then there is absoilutley nothing to talk about.
14  |   Mark Katzman, San Francisco, Thursday Jun 04, 2009 Sherri-I sincerely feel for the loss of your son. Your reasoning and arguments are not only sound but reasonable and even just in that all peoples seek an identity. However, it seems that the Jew is not entitled to one. Even the painful horror of the Holocaust is diluted by the world and denied and debased by those who would seek to destroy Israel and its people-and the world stands by with "folded hands" and says-nothing. This phony in the White House can't and won't listen to your words. He spent 20 yrs listening to lies by a would-be preacher. The only hope is the strength of Israel.
15  |   Toby Klein Greenwald, Efrat, Thursday Jun 04, 2009 Excellent column Sherri. Unfortunately, in the case of Obama, it would probably fall on deaf ears. That may be his exact point -- to destroy the place of the Jewish people in the Jewish homeland. Otherwise why would he talk only about the right of Jews to live here due to the Holocaust, rather than due to the simple fact that it is our land.
16  |   Alex, London, Thursday Jun 04, 2009 The comparision of New york or chicago is absolutely unwarranted, as they are not built on occupied land like the jewish settlements. Moreover israel is violating international law and its own commitment to the world by building settlements. Isreal needs to be honest if it needs to achieve peace
17  |   Steve-Canada, Friday Jun 05, 2009 Well said -am yisrael chai
18  |   Anonymous, Western Hemisphere, Friday Jun 05, 2009 I heard you speak in one of the settlements two a half years ago when I participated on Aish HaTorah's propaganda trip to Israel, a one-sided exploration of Jewish lament. I fully and earnestly feel for you, and the trauma that your family has suffered. I reject that baseless insults against the American president and allusions to the third reich are just, and I think that your analysis of the situation demonizes every Palestinian and grants sainthood to every settler, which is not the case. If either side makes the case that the land is holy than that side is wrong.
19  |   Anonymous, Western Hemisphere, Friday Jun 05, 2009 Furthermore, the role of Obama in Israel is the same as every US president has had since 1948, which is trying to find leverage between the two warring entities. When neither side is willing to compromise, outsiders come in and help with the situation. Which do you care more about? A land where a fairy tale book says your ancestors were given dominion over by an unseen man in the clouds, or the safety of your neighbors, with hope that a tragedy as terrible as the one that happened to your family never happens again? A two state solution or a hole in the ground are the only options left. SHALOM
20  |   Jan - USA, Friday Jun 05, 2009 Hey Mandells, I have no problem with Jews living wherever they want in the Holy Land just as long as you grant Palestinians to live wherever they want - and I'll bet you never would want to grant that. I grant you that Jewish families grow but so do Palestinian families. Maybe it is time to share the land so that both Jews and Palestinians can live in any part of Israel and the territories that they choose. Maybe it is time for one state for both peoples with full rights for all.
21  |   Eric Houston Texas, USA, Friday Jun 05, 2009 A very well articulated article! In what feels like irrational times it is refreshing to hear a completely rational argument. I applaud your efforts and I am praying for Jerusalem.
22  |   Leena, Friday Jun 05, 2009 Keep writing and talking, the more you do, the more aware people become. God bless you both.
23  |   Bosniak in Canada, Saturday Jun 06, 2009 Dear Sherri Mandell, You only see your side of the story. You deman recognition that Jews have authentic connection with this land. Palestinians also have same, or even stronger, authentic connection with the land. You sympathize with your own people, but you have a total lack of sympathy for Palestinians. What that does make you be? A hypocrite?
24  |   Michelle Houston Texas, USA, Sunday Jun 07, 2009 My heart goes out to you and your family. I cannot imagine the frustration and heartache you must be living with. Unfortunaetly I am not surprised by Obama's remarks or his stance on this issue. Your family as well at the state of Israel are in my prayers.
25  |   Peter-Austria, Sunday Jun 07, 2009 Why don't you all do everything you can to sever all ties with the US. You apparently have such hate and distrust of us that continuing a relationship is ridiculous. By the way, return all of the money, arms and forgotten loan money that you have enjoyed in the last 60 years
26  |   Nick Carpentersville, IL, Sunday Jun 07, 2009 many "intelligent" people feel that everyone should "just be at peace" all over the world and that all wars should cease. They feel that Israel should stop giving the muslims such a hard time and just give up sovereignty altogether. The problems we face will not go away. The muslims will not stop attacking Jerusalem and Israel will not stop trying to defend herself. I am praying for Israel and I believe that if more people would seek to understand the truth, there would be many more supporters of Israel.
27  |   Lela Schaffner, Monday Jun 08, 2009 What a beautiful letter, filled with so much truth. How sorry I am, as a citizen of the USA hearing my President propose Jewish people stop the settlements. How riduculous! Everyone knows that every compromise you have made has not stopped the attacks on Israel. You have so eloquently given all of us insight into the precarious life you live daily. I praise you for your bravery. I'm very sorry for the loss of your loved ones. Shalom, Lela Schaffner
28  |   bob, Monday Jun 08, 2009 Jews: 15 million, muslims:15,000 million. Territory: probably, same proportion. Poor oppressed muslims! Greedy jews, shear your land!
29  |   Tani Foger Enlgewood, NJ, Tuesday Jun 09, 2009 Beautifully written, and your points are so well articulated. I only hope this article gets shown to Obama! It feels like we're sliding down a slippery slope unless he can be reached through clearly stated facts and reasoning like you've written.
30  |   Mark, USA, Tuesday Jun 09, 2009 Stop the settlements, or lose the support of the U.S. No one is choosing for you. It's up to you.
31  |   Mike, Wednesday Jun 10, 2009 Mr Obama is playing with Iran on Israel's expense . You can't push for democracy , you can't push for peace if the conditions are not right - I remember H. Clinton stated that Palestinians should start w/school education , where hatred toward israel is given first . We all remember when Arafat got the Nobel Priize, -but Israel had more bombings after that and after - Israel left Gaza w/ greenhouses there and got more than 7,000 rockets fired from there in exchange . GET REAL MR. OBAMA - the 1st dismantle terror as written in the so called THE MAP ROAD TO PEACE . STICK TO THIS FIRST
32  |   U R BHATT , AHMEDABAD , GUJARAT , I N D I A, Thursday Jun 11, 2009 I am all for peace , harmony and peaceful co exhistance . Do not keep Ruminating endlessely with emotion. Rather than slamming Mr.Obama , please give the man a chance . Mr Obama should be requested to explain and be transperant to your Objective satisfaction . It is very easy to object and find faults . Finding solutions requires all the skill and ability . It is only fair and just that Mr .Obama gets a chance . Give Mr.Obama a chance and only let good things happen. This way bonafides of both sides will be tested. If either side is in a denial mode , like Pakistan , it will be exposed .
33  |   Roddy Frankel, Tuesday Jun 16, 2009 Reply to Mark, USA (#30): Do NOT stop the settlements. Let them grow and thrive. Help them develop. Defend them in words and deeds. Anyone who wishes ill of the settlements is an anti-semite. It's that simple.
34  |   fran b Israel, Thursday Jul 16, 2009 If the arabs put down their weapons today, tomorrow there will be lines of Israelis at the borders wating to help in every segment of arab society. If Israel puts down her weapons today, tomorrow there is no Israel. Maybe not politically correct, but, still true.

Jen USA: Elise, I would trust the Justice Department before the CIA, any day. The first is held accountable for their actions. The second rarely is. The lack of response to Sherri's email is sad. Whether Koby's case has been shelved because it is cold or if there is simply a communication breakdown, someone should be available to talk to family members about any case that remains unsolved. I do not think that Sherri should expect the JD to contact her. I would suggest that she write her congressman or congresswoman. If she is still a tax-paying, voting American, her representative will listen.
Shahab Mohd Altaf INDIA: Justice is equal treatment. It means desire for your brother/sister, what you desire for yourself, this is the Islamic concept of Justice.Further the victim is given the right to decide the nature of punishment. This is called Qasas or blood money. The loss of life cannot be compensated but atleast the pain can be reduced.HumanLife is more important than human rights. Terrorists have no religion.
Elise: I am sorry for the loss of your child. I do not understand why you are confused that the Obama administration has refused to list your son as a victim of terror. This would go against their belief that Jews have no right to live where you do. This is a Justice Department that seeks no justice and is so politicized that they ended a probe into voter intimidation by Black Panthers and attacks those that keep us safe(CIA). This is a State Dept. that is inherently anti-semitic even before the advent of the Obama Admn. Justice will not becoming from this Adminsitration. Why are you surprised?
