Everyone is advising President-elect Obama on what he should do as soon as he takes office. I have three suggestions.

One, I urge Obama to rethink his commitment to send our troops from Iraq to Afghanistan. The Iraqis have now decided to require that we leave Iraq as early as June 2010 if a scheduled referendum wins for that position and in any event, no later than December 2011, to which we have agreed. Afghanistan undoubtedly will, if it can, seek a similar ending of our presence in their country. Afghanistan has a peacock president who recently urged the return of the Taliban leader, Mullah Muhammad Omar, former President of Afghanistan, under amnesty. The president's own brother, according to The New York Times, is suspected of being the head of a drug ring with $100 million annually being funneled to the Taliban. Should American soldiers be required to die to defend a corrupt Afghan regime? Rather than increasing our presence in Afghanistan, we should be winding it down.

Two, as a result of the price of gas declining from a high of over $4 per gallon to a low of less than $2 per gallon, the American public may be going back to SUV gas guzzlers and losing interest in developing alternative energy resources. I believe this is the time to impose a $1 per gallon gas tax which would annually raise a hundred billion dollars.

My third suggestion is that half of that tax revenue -- $50 billion annually -- be used to fund a Manhattan Project. The original Manhattan Project, which developed the nuclear bomb, cost $21 billion in today's dollars. We should use the gas tax revenue to sign long-term contracts to allow battery-operated cars and other alternative fuels to compete with available lower-priced oil and gasoline.

I propose that the balance of the gas tax revenue - $50 billion annually - should also be used to fund whatever medical programs are needed for returning American soldiers, as well as a GI program at least equal to that provided to World War II veterans - of which I am one - which made it possible for so many vets, myself included, to go to college – in my case, law school - purchase homes and train for new jobs. We owe it to our vets.

Recently, I conducted a seminar for twelve interns a few years out of college who were sent to me by a foundation that placed them with private firms and public agencies for work experience.

The group asked me what was my greatest concern. I told them that I feared for America's future. I said I do not believe our children are willing to fight and die to defend American ideals and that consequently we might lose the war against Western civilization being waged by international Islamic terrorists.

I said that Americans love life and respect religious freedom. Islamist terrorists, on the other hand, long to die as religious martyrs while forcibly converting the infidel, primarily Christians, Jews and Hindus.

I repeated what Bernard Lewis, the great historian and specialist on Islam, had told me, that forced conversion or death could be averted if Christians and Jews recognized the supremacy of Islam and paid tribute, while followers of other religions did not have that option.

I was surprised at the opposition of many in the room to my statements. Two young women identified themselves as Muslims. They vigorously disputed my statements. I asked them to check with Islamic scholars and continue e-mail discussions with me on the subject. They said they would.  If I hear from them, I'll let you know what they say.

At the end of the hour, I asked the group to demonstrate by a show of hands who agreed with me and who agreed with those who do not think Islamic terrorism is the great danger to the world that I had  described. It was shocking to me that the interns split evenly, 6 to 6. Now I fear more than ever for America's future.

Perhaps Mayor Koch, and others, could save some ink by no longer using the term' Islamic Terrorists', Simply drop the word 'terrorist', for Jihad is basic to Islam, and violence is more than condoned, it is a commanding principle. But another 'gas tax'? More Democrat 'Tax and Spend'. Why not use it to fund education? Every Democratic proposal uses that motherhood and apple pie reason. Note the billions on ethanol, one of the most ridiculous scientific and fscal alternatives ever instituted. Remember that 'Manhattan' was a development program of a demonstrated idea, not 'Blue Sky'.

A Technology lesson for Mayor Koch. Invention is but one percent inspiration, and 99 percent perspiration. But without the one percent, just get yourself a good supply of deodorant. Many energy alternatives are available, and but for the 'Greens' emasculating nuclear we might be well ahead of the game. Forget wind, NIMBY politicians like T. Kennedy put the kibosh on that. Ethanol is great for Mid-west farmers, and ADM, but nobody else. Brazilian bio-fuels are much better, who do we want to depend on? I wonder if there is enough lead and cadmium, both are hazardous metals, for all the E-cars.

Expensive gas isn't an adequate inducement for the 94% of the world that isn't American, so why do you expect miracles from us? I'd rather heavily tax lawyers.

Mr. Koch, you are a typical New York Times reader, half blind and half deaf. How many initiatives and plans have you seen in your life time? Did any of them work? The answer is: none of them. For the simple reason that it takes two to tango. They never lived in peace and harmony, their culture [relegion like cult} calls for conquering the infidels, meaning the entire world and nobody can make them change. their minds. Peace doesn't have a chance between Israel and Arabs or the U.S. and the islamic world. You also should remember that they can't even live side by side with each other/

Dear Mr. Koch: you are joking, aren't you? Even Mr. Obama came around to the understanding that taxing the American people during a recession is the best recipe to worsen the economy. A punitive gas tax is a regressive tax. It did not make sense when Tom Friedman proposed it and it makes even less sense now, when we have learned that it took a price increase of almost 300% to see a reduction in demand. One more thing: alternative energy sources have been researched for more than half a century, though the Press does not appear to be aware of this fact. Some are used; the rest need subsidies.

I agree! Time to rethink how we fight terrorism and not use the classic war model. Too expensive for what we get in return and there is no garantee that any victory will last. And we should increase the price of gasoline a dollar and put 100% of it into developing new energy sources. The money needs to stay at home. As far as islamic terrorism a well funded CIA that shares and doesn't compete with other agencies and opening up talks with Iran could help. I feel safer knowing my enemy inside and out and not keeping her isolated and therefor our intelligence limited.

Dear Mr. Koch, I wonder what response I would get if I went and gave a speech that referred to the chosen people (talk about a cult) as the biggest threat to the world today. And to Morton, get real who have your people ever gotten along with? Tell me about he wars that were raging in the middle east prior to the creation of the state of Israel? Get real you one sided spin doctors.

In Australia we pay petrol tax, It's so noticeable that when the prices went high $1.60/l from $1.20/l some even talked of cutting it (by 5c). An average household spends about 1/4 to 1/3 of its income on transport, most by car. I used to think nothing of going for the day to Sydney, 3.5 hours travel each way and 167km by car, each way, $20+ fuel and $6+ train tickets. The average family car travels over 10,000km per year, 2.5 times the distance from Sydney to Perth (or nearly once around the globe!) Why? Because we can. Daniel the prophet spoke of travel 'to and fro', read what's next!

Dear Mr. Koch, I wonder what response I would get (being world leader) and I gave many speeches on CNN in which I called on every democratic free nation of the world to ban together completely exterminate every nation, tounge, and tribe looking for Jihiad. And what if I said we don't have to wait to have that capability..we have it now....would that be OK?? Who are the real infidels here ?? Reza needs good history lesson, starting with the time of Isaac and Ishmiel. Indeed there has been war long before Isreal became a nation. But then with great wisdom come great respobsibility.

In the state of Oregon all gasoline stations are required to pump their customers gasoline. Oregon residents as well as people passing through Oregon are presented with and required to allow this attendant to pump their gas. It created many jobs for Oregon residents. I believe If we made this a United States wide requirement It would help the economy. Just imagine, if every gas station is required to have 1 attendant on staff during business hours for every 4-6 pumps. Now think how many jobs could be available If this gas pumping requirement was enforced.

Enlightened Soul, Canada: To #50, do you know who created and trained Hamas? Israel did, get your facts right. Israel also trained the Taliban when they were fighting the Soviets. Israel also trained Pakistani ISI. It seems as though Israel is good at creating it's own enemies. I invite you to live a day as a Palestinian and you will have a change of heart my friend. Peace be with you.
Bloodyscot Dallas, Texas: The society is to poor with corruption, raising poppies or smuggling the only way they see to get ahead. The US should have found the strongest pro West warlord to make king until its economy was strong enough to support democratic and only have 5000 to 10,000 troops to go after terrorist. The US waited to long to really start building their army up now it may be too late.
Chuck USA: Claudia and Clayton, your comments are right on target regarding #2's cowardice and a bloodbath occurring after a pullout. History is replete with examples of this, such as: Vietnam and Cambodia. If I remember my history correctly, Afghanistan was an artificially created nation. But I digress, This is but one small part of a WAR which we in the West cannot lose, else the rest of the world goes dark! Mr. Koch really shows his true colors,by stating:"If we Democrats are to win the 2010 elections..... Simply Party politics on his part! This GLOBAL war on terror(Islam) is one we must not lose!
