Koch's Comments: Sarah Palin deserves respect Posted by Ed Koch
Comments: 23
Sarah Palin is a phenomenon. She is plucky and, in a winsome way, in your face. Referring to middle class America as Joe-Six-Pack and to herself as a hockey mom, she debated last week with veteran Senator Joe Biden, who has served in the Senate for 36 years and knows his way around Washington. I have never met Governor Palin. I have known Joe Biden for many years. I really like Joe and share his positions on most issues. I admire Sarah Pain's spunkiness and feel she has not been treated fairly by the media which has tried to make her look foolish and provincial. When she was interviewed by Charles Gibson and asked the question, "Do you agree with the Bush Doctrine?" I thought it unfair. Why? I consider myself to be knowledgeable on foreign affairs and I did not know what the Bush Doctrine referred to until later when it was described as support for preemptive military action. However, that term -- Bush Doctrine -- has also been applied to other policies of the administration. I certainly do believe in the right to take preemptive action to thwart an enemy's attack upon us. Sarah Palin later explained when she learned what the Bush Doctrine stood for, that she did too. When Katie Couric in a later interview asked Palin if she disagreed with any United States Supreme Court decisions other than Roe v. Wade, a case deciding that abortion was a privacy right protected under the Constitution, Palin, having no Supreme Court decision in mind again obfuscated and again looked bad. Interestingly, I am a lawyer - not a Constitutional expert - and had I been asked the same question, no particular decision would have come to mind. This recalls President Eisenhower, who when asked at a press conference to describe Nixon's contributions to his administration's policies, replied: "If you give me a week, I might think of one." On reflection, I would have said that I, most recently, disagreed with the Court's decision to reverse a US District Court's decision which struck down a law allowing judges to be selected by judicial delegates, rather than through a primary. That US Supreme Court decision reaffirmed the power of party county leaders to select New York's Supreme Court judges. I would have also objected to the Supreme Court's recent decision defining the language of the Second Amendment to include the right of individuals to own and carry rifles and hand guns. This decision struck down local laws outlawing possession of guns, thereby providing an enormous victory to the National Rifle Association. Palin's failure in her interview with Katie Couric was in not challenging Couric at the time of the questioning, asking that she further define the question. The media howled and conveyed to the public that on the basis of the interviews, Palin was not qualified to be vice president because she might succeed to the presidency. I thought the media presenting that point of view was simply wrong and biased. Then came the debate with Joe Biden. Both candidates did well. One CNN poll I saw reported that 51 percent of those watching said Joe Biden won the debate to 36 percent for Governor Palin. I agree that Biden won the debate. However, I also think that Palin's performance during the debate with Joe Biden made clear to America that she is no rube, but rather an intelligent, thoughtful person who clearly is not as knowledgeable as her opponent Joe Biden, particularly on foreign affairs. She deserves the media's respect, instead of its mockery and efforts to destroy her by their clear distain. Interestingly, highly intelligent women friends of mine who support Barack Obama, as I do, were horrified when I told them of my views and that I was writing this commentary. Their position is not to give Palin any credit. They believe McCain disgraced himself by choosing her and that she is not worthy to hold the vice presidency. I agree that Joe Biden is a far worthier and more qualified candidate. But I also believe it is Palin's conservative positions that appall many people more than anything else. I ask what would they have said about the selection by Franklin Delano Roosevelt of Harry S. Truman, who now is considered by many historians as our seventh best president. Truman was a haberdasher from Missouri. In his private diary he used disgraceful language in referring to blacks and Jews, and his wife prided herself on the fact that she never permitted a Jew to enter her home. Truman, as President, desegregated the armed forces and recognized the State of Israel even though his Secretary of State George Marshall, threatened to resign if he did so. I am for the Obama-Biden ticket. I also believe that in campaigning for that ticket, it is important to be fair to the opposition - McCain and Palin - who are honorable, intelligent, patriotic Americans

A foolish attempt to redeem yourself for your last week's article. It was an insult to human intelligence and this is not far behind it. Joe Biden, the sesoned lawyer who spent 35 years in the Senate was tense and frustrated because he couldn't deliver a knock out punch on an opponent who appeared just a few days ago on the stage of national politics. His lexicon knowledge doesn't impress any intelligent person! He knows all the questions and all the cliche answers, but again who cares? I also question his integrity; eight years ago he ran in the primaries and had to withdraw his candidacy for plagiarizing.

Voice of reason? No. it's the voice of insanity! The above articel is a piece of hypocrisy ! Shame on you !

l beg to disagree with you. Sarah deserve NO respect, not untill she learns to tell the truth. She had no proper education by our definition of education here in UK: In 1982 she enrolled at Hawai Pacific College but left after one semester; tranfered to North Idaho Community College, there she spent TWO semesters and left for Matanuska-Susitna Community College in Alaska but left after one term...She returned to Idaho, spent Three semesters and was Awarded BSc...that record is nothing to be proud of. To crown it, she eloped with TP in 1988. Though a German descent, she is not honest at all.

You're right. Sarah Palin is not a rube and the unfair attacks on her in the press far outnumber the fair ones. If the past 8 years of the Bush administration have proven anything, it's that I don't want an ordinary everyman to be our president. I want someone extraordinary who is smarter, more eloquent, better educated and better looking than I am. Sarah Palin portrays herself as an ordinary hockey mom with a Joe sixpack husband. I know and respect a lot of women like that but I wouldn't want any of them to be president. Give me Hillary Clinton instead any day.

In ref to 2 and 3. You have no supporting facts that Sarah is unqualified just make empty stamens. Here are facts: she has 85% approval rate- please give one politician to have such numbers; she cut tax and refunded money; she fought corrupt leadership and won- tell do you know of any else who did it single handed; finally in two days she delivered a memorable speech unlike OBAMA who spend two years pre himself. Obama has no record of accomplishments and now we find out that he is associated with corrupt people including voting fraud.

Sadly, Koch, whom I respect, made a terrible mistake - he endorsed ( though quite unenthusiastically) Obama . Koch knows better . Why did he do it ? Not sure , but, perhaps, it was too keep his Dem bona fides.

Palin is not a legitimate candidate for Vice President. You mentioned a few of the perhaps unfair questions that she was asked. But you are forgetting the other extremely easy questions she could not answer. "What newspapers do you usually read?" "All of them, anything I see, I read it". I mean come on. Pick one off the top of your head.
Her answers about Russia were a joke.
She may be an intelligent person, but she obviously has never had a genuine interest in foreign or national affairs. Her run is driven by pure ambition and over confidence. I'm sorry but she is nowhere near ready.

Com'on, she is a pot calling the kettle black...She incites the ignorant with racial comments in an economic climate that is reminicent of the 30's that gave rise to the hatred that led to the rise of Hiltler!
Question Obama's abilities, not his character! Perhaps, it is fitting that a bi-partisan group found her behaving in a quetionable manner! As far as McCain's campaign...argh!
I used to like this guy....I mean the old McCain!

Wow - who is this Joseph Adewole, the ultimate elitist? "by our definition of education" - well, Abraham Lincoln had less than one year of formal schooling...sitting in a classroom listening to an egghead who's never done anything productive in his life is not the best education. Get off your high horse with "your" definition of education - you display no wisdom, only foolish arrogance.

Eddie boychik, you were a failure as Mayor and not much has changed. Go take your leftist ideas and stop bothering us with them.

This is pure hypocrisy. Koch is trying to have it both ways:- he endorses a man with absolutely no experience to be the leader of the free world, then tries to pacify those of us who recognize that fact.
An Obama Administration will bring about a disastrous four years, for America and the Western world.

Palin does a fairly good Tina Fey impersonation.

Any one who votes for the Democrats should be dis-enfranchised.

Palin deserves NO respect, she might however, deserve some jail time.
She has been damn near inciting people to riot at her Nuremberg type rallies, one of which people started shouting racist terms and a black camera man got assaulted, but no Palin to the rescue.
She's a petty, vindictive political hack, who lives on the bottom, feeding from and stoking tensions she's party responsible for.
Respect?
You earn respect, it's one thing the Republicans can't buy.

I frankly know that, Carter aside, Eisenhower was the WORST president this country has had. Truman as well. He helped Europe recover from WWII, but he did not give a damn for those most persecuted by the Nazis. He recognized Israel - after the Soviets and to win New York in 1948. Palin is a disaster in both character and intelligence. Besides being a 'crook' in Alaska, she would destroy any semblance of Church/State separation. The real fools here are two: McCain for appointing her and Lieberman for supporting this terrible duo. And maybe Mayor Koch for finding anything redeeming in her.

I am surprised at many of thes comments which I thought were completely off base regarding what the article was REALLY about!
Koch was simply telling the truth about the media bias toward Obama - which cannot be disputed.
This unprecendented and dangerous bias has sought to undermine Palin, by unfair, biased interviews, and also in their complete coverage of her. Journalistic integrity is a thing of the past.
No one seems to even notice or care. There is great danger in this for all of us - not just Palin. We are being intentionally MISLED by partisan journalism on many issues.

I support McCain/Palin and I appreciate your insightful review of the debate and of Ms. Palin's considerable attributes. I base my support on past actions and the moral decisions of the candidates and I believe both McCain and Palin make their decisions based on honor rather than political expediency. In the second Presidential debate, McCain had no hesitation about defending Israel should there be a threat from Palestine, but Obama "never" said he would. Obama speaks very eloquently, but sometimes his words are hollow. Actions speak louder than words. McCain has the experience and wisdom

victor. What is separation of church & state?Where does it say this in the constitution?the only place it appears is in a letter from Thomas Jefferson. He made it clear that separation means that the state doesn't meddle in the affairs of religion & the freedom of those to worship (without infringing on the rights of others freedoms), & the state does not select a national denomination as state church. That's it.It protects religion from state, not state from religion. It doesn't mean that religious symbols can't be displayed on federal & state land.Jefferson would be rolling in his grave now.

McCain and Palin owe the American public an apology for allowing hecklers to holler kill him at a rally. There have been numerous presidents and leaders assasinated,John and Robert Kennedy,Abe Lincoln,Dr.King and the attempt on Reagans life just to name a few .It is dirty, dangerous politics and needs to be stopped immediately. It is a travisty. They owe Barack Obama and his family an apology and they need to be ashamed for allowing this type of terroistic politics to be practiced in their campaign. I am ashamed and I know that the Republican Party as well has to be emarassed.

One day G-d will judge the media and we will see "mercy and truth kiss" until then we must humbly pray!

The Palin honeymoon is over. However, I think it is a great marriage for the USA.
Biden did NOT win that debate--Palin held her own very well. Did you NOT see her body language when it came to foreign policy. She means what she says--and will NOT kiss the foot of terrorists-
all of whom are applauding Obama. Farrakhan called him the "Messiah"! As far as racism is concerned, the Democrats have said :"they" said it and what not. NOT ONE Republican has been racist! However, the Dem are looking for words that could imply it.
You know, the same Dems who are in the majority of Congress who sucks!

Thank you Mr. Koch for a very good article. I like Govenor Palin and I think she would make a fine vice-president. I will be glad when this election is over and we can go back to just hating each other. This election has gone far beyond hate. The vitrol spewing from the left is staggering and thei incredible hatred of a fine woman is not easy to understand and is less easy to tolerate as the days go by. I am not saying the republicans have been nice but the things said about Govenor Palin are shocking and frightening. I don't know why they hate Sarah Palin.

We respect Sarah, we really do. But she's not qualified. Her views are part of the Republicans' religious right views, which are only believed by a small portion of U.S. citizens. As Paul Krugman, this year's Nobel winner in Economics says: The Republicans are the party of stupid.
