Koch's Comments: Campaigning for the Obama-Biden ticket

On Sunday, I flew to Florida at the request of the Obama-Biden Democratic campaign for the purpose of speaking on their behalf in the Jewish condo community. Four years ago, in the last presidential campaign, I had flown to Florida at the request of the Bush-Cheney Republican campaign to rally support for that ticket.

I had announced back in 2004 that I did not agree with President Bush on a single domestic issue, but that I concluded that of the two men running for president representing the two major parties - Republican and Democratic - Bush understood the danger to Western civilization of international Islamic terrorism and John Kerry, in my opinion, did not; and that Bush was willing to take on Islamic terrorism, no matter the cost, while Kerry, in my opinion, did not treat confronting Islamic terrorism as a priority. The danger to Western civilization included the danger to Israel, located in a sea of Muslim states intent on destroying it as an outpost of Western civilization.

Here I was, four years later in those same Jewish communities, consisting of many retired New Yorkers, urging the Jewish residents of Florida to vote for Barack Obama and Joe Biden. On this trip, I told the four Jewish communities I visited - about 1,000 Jews in attendance in the aggregate - why I was there and why I was supporting Obama.

I told them why I supported President Bush four years ago, and that I had no regrets. I said there was an important difference now in that I believe the candidates and the political parties they represent understand the existential danger to Western civilization posed by Islamic terrorism. Since the candidates and parties all recognize the need to prevail against Islamic terrorism, the issues which distinguish the Democratic Party from the Republican Party have become more than relevant, they are now essential.

On the issue of abortion, Obama and Biden will safeguard a woman's right to choose recognized under the landmark decision in Roe v. Wade. How? By President Obama filling the two or more vacancies expected to occur on the US Supreme Court in the next four years with justices who support Roe v. Wade and preserving the right of abortion. In contrast, McCain would appoint judges who would override Roe v. Wade and allow abortion only in cases of rape, incest and to save the life of the mother. If Palin were to succeed McCain as president, there would be only one exception to barring all abortions and that would be to preserve the life of the mother. A raped woman and a child raped by her own father - an act of incest - would be required to carry the fetus to term. How awful even to contemplate.

Obama and Biden would also protect the monthly Social Security stipends paid to beneficiaries. McCain and Palin would privatize Social Security which in today's stock market would have lowered the monthly amounts to be paid to beneficiaries and reduced their standard of living.

In the case of taxes, McCain would continue the practice of preferring the rich - the top two percent of taxpayers whose annual income exceeds $300,000, and who in the last Republican tax reduction legislation received 37 percent of the total tax reduction.

On the issue of gay rights, McCain and Palin, would continue with the "don't ask, don't tell" policy of preventing gays and lesbians from serving in the US armed forces, while most of the NATO nations allow them to serve equally with heterosexuals.

I told the audiences when McCain selected Sarah Palin as his vice presidential candidate that, based on, among other positions, her reported interest in censoring library books in the town of Wasilla, Alaska of which she was mayor, "She scared the hell out of me." Her lack of basic information when it comes to the conduct of foreign affairs which she again demonstrated in interviews in the last week has reinforced my fear.

In one of the meetings I addressed, I asked the crowd of 300, how many intended to vote for the Democrats and how many for the Republicans. To my amazement, the overwhelming majority said they were voting for Obama and Biden, with three raising their hands in favor of McCain and Palin.

I told the crowd that, clearly, they needed no convincing by me on how to vote, but they now had to take an oath. I asked them to raise their right hands and repeat after me, "I solemnly swear that between now and November 4th, I will seek out ten people who are committed to voting for Obama and Biden and make certain they go to the polls on Election Day. So help me, God."

They all took the oath and are now honor bound to do what they pledged to do.

"I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore chose life, that both thou and thy seed may live." Deuteronomy 30:19 When you stand before The LORD, you will give an account for ALL the innocent blood shed by the votes you cast for candidates and judges and for the support for like-minded people. May HE have Mercy. But don't stand now and claim righteousness for yourself or Obama or Biden.

Some of Obama's advisors have suggested a US military response to Israel's defensive measures against terrorism. Mr. Koch, what is your answer to these suggestions? Should the US/Obama turn against Israel and support the only the Palestinian views of the problems? Why do You support Obama, do You realize what his team is talking of? A war against Israel? Why would You want to change the realistic thinking of the US Jewry to help the Islamists gain their goals? You are very badly wrong.

With the economic situation as it is and the continued threat of terrorist nations as it is - why do you think Roe v Wade and Gay rights are a priority??? America's moral decline is obvious but if we do not restore the economy and keep the war on terrorism going there will be no America as we know it - it will be Ameristan and check out how the Muslims feel about abortion and Gays. You are out of touch with reality Mr. Koch, your political days are over along with the liberal geriatric community you represent.

Oh thank you Mr. Koch. You are just incredible...after eight years of wondering why you supported the current tyrannical regime, it is a breath of fresh air to see you back. Thank you!

Ed Koch still hasn't addressed the issue of Obama's membership for 20 years in Rev. Wright's anti-American, anti-Semitic church. He hasn't talked about Obama's foreign policy advisors, Brzezinski, Power, Rice, and Farley, who are vehemently anti-Israel. He doesn't mention Biden's rejection of John Bolton as Ambassador to the UN, one of the most pro-Israel Ambassadors. He talks of Roe v. Wade being overthrown--a Democratic Congress will not approve the nomination of a Pro-Life Justice. Koch has reverted to his Democratic roots.

The REALITY of Social Security is simple it is not going to look anything like what it is now if it is even in existance in 20 years. I am a young person and I am seriously considering signing the proper documentation to stop having social security taken out of my paycheck because I will never see that money again. NEVER. My generation understands this. We also understand that we will be taking care of our parents and possibly even grandparents the way thing are going. It's a sobering reality, you however are living in a fantacy, Obama cannot save the day with Social Secutity.

Cont. Sad to say, but our various problems with abortion, and gay rights, all have their roots in allowing religious law, interpreted by Men of God, to drive civil law. Our Supreme Court has been our bulwark, and even with the ‘conservative’ appointments has maintained, and upheld, the principle of separation. Better that way than ‘liberal’ social engineering. One wonders how much of today’s economic problems are due to Clinton social engineering of easy mortgages. Time is not always the best healer, perhaps it was the start of a festering sore that has now erupted.

Mr. Koch, you have already campaigned for Dinkins. We remember the Crown Heights and his project housing initiated by Dinkins tore the Jewish Upper West Side. Please stop your party politics and please start caring for the interests of the Jewish people

I am very dissapointed with Ed Koch. I used to be a great admirere of his for being a great rational supporter of Israel. For him to decide to vote for Obama this year because of US dometic policies while there is an estimate that Iran will have nuclear weapons within two to five years is very naive . To support a man like Obama who wishes to talk to Iran and negotiate with evil is dangerous for Israel. To support Obama who for 20 years has listened to his pastor spouting anti semetic and anti Israeli sermons is sad. The Jewish community must walk up !Obama is not good for Israel!.

Ed, I tend to trust you. You have always been a friend of Israel's. I really don't believe that Obama is an enemy of Israel's but I would love you address the concern's of the other bloggers. Are Brzezinski, Power, Rice, and Farley players in Obama's camp? If so, then I can't support him, no matter how much I support reproductive rights for women.

Mayor Koch, you have referenced INTERNATIONAL ISLAMIC TERRORISM in 2004 as the primary issue that superceded pressing domestic issues. The reference remains constant in 2008. McCain understands, as does Bush, the clear and present danger to Western Civilization of INTERNATIONAL ISLAMIC TERRORISM . Rescind your request of an audience, an honor bound oath of allegiance to Obama and Biden based on domestic tranquility. Request instead, an honor bound oath to the preservation of Western Civilization, and our Democratic Republic. Instruct your audience to view HLF-HAMAS transcripts.

Ger #5 understands what Obama represents for Israel and America. Democrats are playing upon people's fears. Obama is the one who will raise taxes and hurt seniors. Selling stock or real estate? He'll double your capital gains tax and will raise the estate tax. Palin did not push her personal views on the people of Alaska. She signed a law giving gay couples health benefits and abortion is still legal there. Obama censors free speech with his "truth squads" and army of lawyers. He now has an "Obama Channel" on tv. His CHANGE = socialism for the U.S. and a new hostile policy towards Israel.

As a Jewish recent American citizen I just don't understand the American Jews. I cannot believe that abortion and homosexuality are their #1 priorities when choosing a president. Don't they care about the survival of the Jewish people, Israel, the economy, etc. I really don't get it. Aren't they aware of Obama's middle name, his church, his connections with people who despise Israel? Finally, the son of a Jewish mother is a Jew (according to Judaism) and the son of a Muslim father is a Muslim(according to Islam), isn't that enough to avoid Obama?

I've lost all respect for you, Mr. Koch.

The USA can choose between 2 lawyers and 2 non-lawyers. What does Mr. Koch think the Democrats will do with the upcoming iranian threat, will they sue them? At every step in the process we have seen Senator Obama react on rather then anticipate situations. The democrats as a party have become European. I can't belief any Jewish person would see that as a possitive change, wake-up! (I'm not Jewish)

It appears that many readers do not understand the importance of the separation of church and state. That is where McCain/Palin completely fail. The failure of keeping state and church separate would severely adversely affect the Jewish community in the USA. And such a negative effect on Jews here will, in the long run, adversely affect Israel negatively. Palin has demonstrated enormous ignorance in other areas as well. She supports teaching 'creationism' side-by-side with evolution in science classrooms. As a scientist I find that incredibly stupid.

Forgive me if I have little charity for Mr. Koch. Koch's support of Obama who worshiped for 20 yrs. at a RACIST and ANTI-ISRAEL Church supporting HAMAS tells me loud and clear that Koch is all about his wallet being close to his hand! Obama stated he will "TALK" with those who live for Israel's Destruction! What has not been said? Israel's Security will be one of the first items Obama will negotiate away! It is Shameful; Koch disrespects his own heritage and has become full of himself while caring but little for Israei!

You have lost your mind Ed. #13, being Jewish if your mother is a Jew is the Law of Return for Israel but not how Torah looks at it.Judaism has gotten a little more "talmudic" I think. The Law of Return using the mother criteria is more based on who has possession of the "katubah".It's usually the mother. But in Torah the lineage ie tribes is passed thru the male ie Abraham, Issac, Jacob & the 12 tribes and so on.People who have made aliyah have overturned this when it came up,when they could prove their father as Jewish. #16,you know evolution is still a theory.& you call yourself a scientist?

Dear Mr. Koch: It has finally happened. You have finally fell off the train and into the water of the lost. For you to even come close to comparing Obama and McCain when it comes to the security of the United States, or to the nation of Israel, has put you within the Twilight Zone. I do not know which is worse, a person who would be president going to a church for 20 years full of anti-Israeli views...or the Jew who supports him.

Abortion hurts women emotionally, mentally and physically - many women who have abotions are never the same again. The vast majority of the time women who have abortions are in a desperate place financially and corrupt corporations take advantage of these destitute women by charging them hundreds of dollars to kill their babies! This is the truth about abortion. One million women in the USA are going to confront the government with this information and when the people stand up and every voice is heard things do change. The blood of innocent babies is crying out and God has not forgotten them.

Ed, when you were Mayor, you always asked "How'm I doing?" Well, in my humble opinion, the question should be "What am I doing?" The belief that a man who will raise taxes in a recession (the last one who tried it was Hoover, and we all remember it didn't work out so well), has friends among radical pro-Palestinians and has less governmental experience than Palin will be the one to transform the country shows that you are giving into the Audacity of Hype over the reality of the situation. Just like your 3rd term as mayor, I think you've gone a bridge too far.

For reasons that are unknown to me, you at Jerusalem Post, have been refusing to show my posts. I strongly oppose Ed Koch's views whenever Israel's security is in question, but my posts never contain obscene language, or incitement to violence. Any explanation?

Sadly disappointed with jpost editors. Better that they should have rejected my total submission than to publish only part 2. I do not idolize Ed Koch, although he is often interesting reading. In this blog he showed his true colors as a Democratic Party hack though. In my unpublished part 1, I took issue with much of what he said. But where featured writers are unlimited in their posts, we, the public, are limited to 600 characters, not much more than a sound bite.

Thanks bloggers. I am a non-US born Jew whose conscience is always attacked by fellow US born american Jews' political views. I feel like I am a different kind of Jew and don't belong in the same group. American Jews remind me very much of the yekes (german jews) in my small jewish community in South America. They, german jews, are gone, assimilated completely. I am not going to assimilate, I am going to support my people until I am no longer part of this world regardless of their country of origin. And I am for the live of me not voting for Obama!

Ed - Your statement that McCain "would appoint judges who would override Roe v. Wade and allow abortion only in cases of rape, incest and to save the life of the mother" shows a thorough misunderstanding of the reach of that decision. Overriding Roe would result not in the Court restricting the right of abortion, but instead making it a state, rather than federal issue. Also, there is simply no evidence that McCain's appointing relatively conservative Justices would result inthe COurt even taking up the issue on certiori. THis is just part of the hysterical rhetoric that needs to stop .
