The ancient song of hatred
Much has already been written on Mearsheimer and Walt's The Israel Lobby and US Foreign Policy but, last week, when they took their road show to MIT, they made it very clear that Israel is to blame for 9/11 - that without Bin Laden's hatred of what Israel is doing to the Palestinians - there never would have been a 9/11. As Mearsheimer told his audience, "A critically important issue when talking about America's terrorism problem is the matter of how US support for Israel's brutal treatment of the Palestinians relates to what happened on September 11." He then went on to say that now that the Cold War is over Israel is no longer a strategic asset to America. In other words - if we end our support of Israel, America will be safer and the terrorists will pick other targets - the only obstacle to achieving that is the Jewish lobby and its stranglehold on policy-making in Washington. The ancient song of hatredIn the Passover Haggadah we sing a tune to the words "in every generation they have risen up to destroy you...." I always wondered what's there to sing about? CNN's God's Warriors at war with truthA day prior to the airing of Christiane Amanpour's six-hour CNN documentary entitled GodÂ’s Warriors, I was one of four clergymen to be a guest on Larry King Live to discuss the issue of fundamentalism in today's world. The interview on Larry King was pre-recorded in mid-July and none of the participants had seen the six-hour documentary because it was still being edited. Now that I have seen it, I sent the following critique to the producers of God's Warriors. Hamas, Iran and the HolocaustGenocide cannot be carried out by a few people - it takes a village and a mindset of a whole nation to create an Auschwitz. Terrorists, the new op-ed contributorsI hardly think that if, a week after 9/11, Osama bin Laden would have penned an op-ed piece that either the Times or the Post would have published it. Late condemnationPerhaps there were saints in those terrible years, but the historical record shows that Pope Pius XII was not one of them. Deafening silenceGiven the reaction to a talk show host who crossed the line, you'd expect universal condemnation of a speaker of a parliament who calls for the extermination of a people. Am Yisrael chaiWhat was unique about this photograph is that it was not taken by the Nazis but by the Jews themselves. |
