Once again, Jews have been targeted simply for being Jews.

This time, the victims were in Mumbai.

Though some in the media were slow to identify what should have been obvious - the New York Times speculated that it might have been an "accidental hostage scene"- they weren't killed randomly. They were sought out in a carefully planned operation.

The jihadist murderers were looking for Jews, and found them.

Of course, Jews were not the only target. But it is telling that in this teeming city of millions, a tiny community, numbering no more than a few thousand, was pinpointed.

These murderers have been taught in their mosques, madrassas, and media to hate Jews, all Jews. Once again, it doesn't matter to them what "kind" of Jew it is. Anyone caught in that Chabad House was fair game. In their demented minds, the very act of being in a Jewish space, any Jewish space, was more than sufficient grounds for being captured, tortured, and murdered.

That Israelis have been repeatedly targeted by terrorists is well-known, if not always well understood.

But what is less widely recognized is that Jews anywhere might be singled out by radical Muslim groups, whether motivated by religious creed or political doctrine, or both.

If Mumbai were the first such instance, it would be tragic enough. But it's not. That makes it all the more important to recall other assaults, sometimes much too quickly forgotten.

In 2006, Naveed Afzal Haq attacked the Jewish Federation office in Seattle. He shot six women, one fatally. The Seattle police chief noted that Haq had been looking for "something Jewish" on the Internet.

In 2003, two Istanbul synagogues, Bet Israel and Neve Shalom, were targeted by terrorists using car bombs. Twenty-seven people were killed in the blasts, and more than 300 were wounded. Six Jews were among the victims.

In the case of Neve Shalom, it was the third such attack. In 1986, two terrorists entered during a Shabbat service and killed 22 worshippers, including seven rabbis. Six years later, a bomb went off at the synagogue, but there were no fatalities.

Also in 2003, a Jewish community center was one of several targets of homicide bombers in Morocco. In all, the death toll was over 40.

A year earlier, the historic El Ghriba synagogue on the Tunisian island of Djerba was the target of a truck bomb. Thirteen people were killed, including eight German tourists.

On January 23, 2002, Daniel Pearl, a reporter for the Wall Street Journal, was kidnapped in Pakistan. Nearly a month later, a video was released in which he was seen saying "My name is Daniel Pearl. .. My father's Jewish. My mother's Jewish. I'm Jewish." A few months later, his body was found. He had been beheaded, his body cut up by his assassins into ten pieces.

In 1994, the headquarters of AMIA, the central communal welfare body of Argentine Jewry, was attacked. Eighty-five people, Jews and non-Jews alike, were killed; nearly 300 were injured.

The same year, a van carrying a group of yeshiva students, having just paid a hospital visit, was attacked on the entrance ramp to the Brooklyn Bridge in Manhattan. Sixteen-year-old Ari Halberstam was killed, while several others were wounded. The murderer, Rashid Baz, shouted "Kill the Jews" during the assault.

In 1985, a cruise ship, the Achille Lauro, was hijacked by terrorists. The next day, the hijackers grabbed a 69-year-old, wheelchair-bound American passenger, Leon Klinghoffer, and shot him. Then, they ordered other passengers to toss the body and the wheelchair into the sea. The PLO's foreign spokesman, Farouk Kaddoumi, later claimed that the dastardly deed had been done by Klinghoffer's wife to collect on a life insurance policy.

In 1982, terrorists attacked the main synagogue in Rome. A two-year-old boy was killed; more than 35 others were wounded.

Another synagogue was attacked the same year, this one in Brussels. Four people were wounded.

Also in 1982, a well-known Jewish restaurant, Goldenberg, was attacked in Paris. Six people were killed, 22 wounded.

In 1981, a synagogue in Vienna was attacked. Two people were killed and 23 wounded.

In 1980, a motorcycle packed with explosives blew up outside the Rue Copernic synagogue in Paris. Four people were killed. Hundreds of people inside the synagogue were about to exit, which meant that only by a stroke of luck was the death toll not much higher.

And in the same year, a Jewish summer camp in Antwerp was the target. Hand grenades were thrown at youngsters, killing one and wounding more than 20 others.

This is by no means an exhaustive list of attacks against Jewish targets - synagogues, summer camps, restaurants, community centers, communal institutions - in the past three decades.

It also, of course, excludes attacks against Israel or Israeli targets, which number literally in the thousands.

And it doesn't begin to convey the human anguish, whether of the two-year-old boy who became an orphan when his parents were killed in the Chabad House in Mumbai or the lifelong pain of a parent who lost a child.

Rather, this list serves as a poignant reminder that the Mumbai massacre wasn't an isolated incident, but the latest in a series of murderous assaults against Jews.

Moreover, it's a revealing lesson for those who claim that the Muslim world has not been plagued by the same venomous anti-Semitism as the Christian world. Whatever the historical record, today the greatest physical threat to Jews comes from within Islamic communities. As Professor Robert Wistrich wrote in an AJC publication, Muslim anti-Semitism is "a clear and present danger."

As long as there are some leading figures, like Abdel Rahman Al-Sudais of the Grand Mosque in Mecca, who spout unadulterated anti-Semitism and remain unchallenged, there will be many prepared to listen. The BBC reported the imam saying that Jews are "the scum of the human race" and "offsprings of apes and pigs."

Or Palestinian cleric Ibrahim Mahdi, who cited this hadith (an oral tradition ascribed to Muhammad): "Who will set the Muslim to rule over the Jew? Allah... Until the Jew hides behind the rock and the tree. But the rock and tree will say: 'Oh Muslim, oh servant of Allah, a Jew hides behind me, come and kill him.'"

Or a sixth-grade Saudi textbook that teaches impressionable young minds that God has said in the Koran: "You will find the most implacable of men in their enmity to the faithful are the Jews," and, in a seventh-grade textbook, that Judaism is "a corrupted religion."

But one cautionary note.

Some Jews, resorting to a Masada mindset, may once again conclude that the whole world is against the Jewish people - that jihadists may be in the forefront, but others of various faiths are silently cheering them along.

I don't buy this notion.

Of course, there's no shortage of anti-Semites out there, requiring constant vigilance. But to conclude that we're all alone, that we're without allies in other communities, is simply wrong-headed, if not self-destructive.

It ignores the tremendous strides in both integration and interfaith relations made by the Jewish people in recent decades.

And it fails to recognize that in Mumbai, Istanbul, Casablanca, Paris, and elsewhere, Jews were not the only ones targeted, nor were they by any means the only victims.

This kind of jihadist terror attacks open societies. It threatens democratic countries. It confronts moderate Muslim nations, such as Morocco, Tunisia, and Turkey.

Surely, we Jews need not stand alone because, in fact, we do not stand alone.

Sandra Samuel is a symbol of our common cause. She is the courageous Indian nanny who saved two-year-old Moshe Holtzberg from certain death in the Chabad House in Mumbai.

In her selfless act, she embodies the essence of our common humanity.

Once again, David Harris hits the nail on the head. His compelling piece should be must-reading for Jews and non-Jews alike.
2  |   Montedoro, Monday Dec 08, 2008
BRAVO! Harris writes: " Whatever the historical record, today the greatest physical threat to Jews comes from within Islamic communities.." Indeed it does! And, this includes the Islamic communities all over the world including our neighborhood mosques in America and Israel. The AJC and other Jewish organizations should be leading the campaign to educate our Jewish communities in America and Israel to the anti-Semitism that is being preached and taught in every mosque in Israel and America, and not only in countries thousands of miles away.

Though some of David's comments are strong and supportive of our people and the justice which needs to be done, his contention that we are receiving support from others in the world because of out attempts at integration ( which may even indicate assimilation) is dangerous. The world has always hated us, though we have remained a kind, helpful family. Hashem has taken care of us, because of his kindsness and because of the special relationship which we have with him. We really can not rely on others. Though there might be some kind hearted gentiles, but they basically remain silent.

Unfortunately, David Harris' blog reads like the Yom Kippur Eleh Ezkerah martyrology. The urgent question is what do to in light of these events. Although Jews and Israelis are being singled out, Mr. Harris counsels against a "Masada mindset" because "we are not alone." We were not alone in WWII either, witness the Righteous Gentiles, yet 6 million Jews died. Today, actions at the UN have a decided anti-Israel, and anti-Semitic by implication, slant. While there may be isolated acts like those of Ms. Samuel, the world tolerates those who urge action against the "Jewish/Zionist conspiracy."

As a Christian, I am ashamed that I too often have "politely" remained silent in the face of ongoing never-ending persecution of Jews and other groups of people. That I was ignorant of many of the events recounted and itemized by David Harris is an indictment of our mass media. Though these crimes are most shameful, they should never be hidden, but should be shouted from the rooftops. We stand together or will surely fall separately.

On the money!
7  |   Shar, Monday Dec 08, 2008
Just recently, at my office in Los Angeles, a Mexican co-worker made a remark about the "Elitist Jews" that run our company. She knows full well that I am Jewish, too. It was the first time in my life someone made an anti-semitic remark directly to my face.

I always loved David Harris' articles, incisive and analytical. But, this time he shot himself in the foot. He writes how Jews were singled out to be killed, maimed and tortured, then took all this back when he says that we are not alone. Give me a break! We are either being singled out or were not. Yes, Jews are being targeted again. Unfortunately, some Jews prefer NOT to defend themselves, and they would also deny others a chance to defend themselves as well. Just look at the gun control laws in America's bigger cities such New York City. Where are the Jews on this matter? They seem to be rather in favor of these laws?
10  |   Nancy Scarsdale, NY, Tuesday Dec 09, 2008
As usual, David Harris is right on target. But - what is the solution? Where is the United Nation's condemnation. We haven't heard from them. Yet, they have always convened to condemn Israel... Where are they now?
11  |   Dave, Tel Aviv, Tuesday Dec 09, 2008
Great piece Mr. Harris. It is the sad truth that Jews are being singled out all over the world, primarily by Muslim extremists. You are correct (though some of the other comments seemed to miss the point) that we do have allies, but they are far and few between. These allies, like the Indian nanny, are courageus and there are many more like them. When will the world finally unite in the face of this very really threat that is islamic extremism? Keep up the good fight.
12  |   Ron, New Jersey, Tuesday Dec 09, 2008
Joseph from California (#8) clearly misses the point of Harris's piece. On the one hand it is clear that Jews are singled out. Harris lists numerous examples of terrorist attacks in which Jews all over the world were singled out for death solely based on their religion. On the other hand, despite this singling out, the Jews do have some allies in the fight against anti-semitiem and intolerance and are thus not alone. Our allies are not always as vocal as we would like, but at the same time doing the right thing is not always the easierst thing
13  |   Phillip Hasselman, Toronto, Tuesday Dec 09, 2008
Nice piece Harris. For these terrorists, they do not care if a Jew is secular or religious, likud or labor, and so on. A Jew is a Jew is a Jew. The Nazis did not differenitate and neither do these blood thirsty "militants" with no regard for human life. Jews stop your internal bickering and wake up. Most of the world is against you and the only thing you can rely on in this world is the military strength of Israel. Unite and fight this very real threat.

To honor the lives of Rabbi Gavriel and Rivkah Holtzberg, murdered with four other Jews in Mambai’s Chabad House, I have created a collaborative digital artwork that will open the Hanukah exhibition “Art in Darkness” at Emuna College in Jerusalem on 15 December 2008. In the artwork called “Rotate Art Before Darkness” (from the Jewish prayerbook) photographs of morning prayers are seen cycling around the world from Aizwal (Mizoram State, India), Melbourne, Hobart (Tasmania), Honololu, Seattle, Los Angeles, Denver, New Jersey, Brooklyn, London, Amsterdam, Berlin, Prague, Budapest, Johannesburg, Vysoki (Russia), Tbilisi, to Jerusalem. The artwork is continually updated as synagogues welcoming the dawn worldwide send photographs to art@wikiartists.us. Updates on the growth of this memorial artwork are posted at my blog www.artiststory.com.

When I read David A.Harris notes,I really have the hump for seeing how we are surrounded by the world's antisemitic ideas.Israel and its people is always alone,we have too much enemies than fancier people. But,God is always with us,we have to believe that.We must be united forever. We must show, the radical islamic concidering people that we still want to live together with them in mutually human respect.
16  |   Georgette, New York, Tuesday Dec 09, 2008
Bravo to Ron (#12) for the reply to Joseph (#8). Joseph, Not only do we Jews need allies, but we actually have some. Why act as if we don't? Would you really prefer to try going it alone in a world of 6 billion people where we number barely 15 million? Do you think that hundreds of millions of Indians don't hate radical jihadists as much as you and me? Do you think French President Sarkozy, German Chancellor Merkel, and Canadian PM Harper are indifferent to anti-Semitism? And what about the Pope? How do you think he feels about radical Islam? The enemy of my enemy is my ally.
17  |   Khalid, Tuesday Dec 09, 2008
No, Jews were not being targeted. According to News reports, 35 of the victims were Muslims, and only 4-6 were Jews. Some were Christians but the vast majority were Hindus. Hence, the claim that Jews were targeted for being Jew is a silly lie.
18  |   Shar, Los Angeles, CA, Tuesday Dec 09, 2008
Phillip (#13): "Jews stop your internal bickering and wake up. Most of the world is against you..." Thanks for the reality check. Just to note: on a smaller and individual level, I reported the anti-semitic remark to HR. They did absolutely nothing. Sound familiar? It just takes one person to do nothing, and another person to do nothing, and ... etc etc.
19  |   Marsha in Englewood, NJ, USA, Tuesday Dec 09, 2008
What can we expect from the rest of the world and the UN when the Israeli government has shown the world by example that Jewish blood is cheap. That missiles can rain on Israel from gaza with impunity and Hezbolla can still function shows the world that even Jews won't protect other Jews. Hopefully Israel will have a new government soon, one with Jewish pride. A government that will respond to threats with bombs, not restraint. Will the world condemn? Absolutely. But they aren't going to love us no matter what.
20  |   Jordan, Philadelphia, PA, Tuesday Dec 09, 2008
Khalid (#17) If you have the delusional audacity to suggest that terrorists walked into a Chabad House, and opened fire, and had no desire to intentionally kill some Jewish people for the sake of being Jewish... i suggest that someone should provide you a straight jacket and a padded cell. I'll gladly offer mine, as you clearly need it more than i do.
21  |   Andrei, Wednesday Dec 10, 2008
Warm regards and shalom to mr Harris! [ Link to page ]
22  |   Georgette, New York, Wednesday Dec 10, 2008
Khalid (#17), what rubbish! Can you argue with a straight face that the Jews killed in Mumbai were just random victims? In reality, they were sought out and killed because the jihadist murderers wanted to include Jews among their targets and had to go out of their way to find them in this huge city with a tiny Jewish community. Please wake up and smell the coffee!
23  |   Ken, Wednesday Dec 10, 2008
I am a Christian, currently in Israel...learning Hebrew. I will return to Israel in early Spring to do volunteer work for the IDF. I am not here to proslytize or convert anyone. All I wish to do is assist ISRAEL AND THE JEWISH PEOPLE with their heavy burdon of defending what IS THEIRS. For Israel EXISTS and over my dead body will anyone take this from them. No...Jewish people...Israel is NOT ALONE. People like me number in the millions and all we wish to do is help take some of this burdon from your shoulders. Make it easier for us. Please. YOU ARE NOT ALONE. I am here to help!
24  |   Avrohom - Israel, Wednesday Dec 10, 2008
Khalid, I guess you do not understand the meaning of the word 'targeted'. The attack on the Chabad House was an intentional targeting of Jews. But you, Kalid, are typical in how your view of the world is upside down and intellectually dishonest. We are fortunate to be not like you, Khalid.
25  |   C Bozner, Wednesday Dec 10, 2008
Khalid - #17 - as others have pointed out you are very wrong. Yes non-Jews were murdered, but Jews were among three groups specifically targeted. Even the captured terrorist admitted that the attack purposely included the Chabad House because it was a place of Jewish gathering. Out of thousands of buildings to attack, the terrorists aimed specifically for that site and the two Western hotels. When Muslims stop apologising for other Muslims' terrorism and admit that there is an unacceptable amount of anti-Jewish behaviour even in their moderate midsts, then Islam may have some progress.
26  |   Pen mightier than sword, Wednesday Dec 10, 2008
What do you, or Jewish, Israel leaders learn when you see Jews, Israelis being picked off all over the world Well the ultra-religious Jews, Israelis leaders say it's because Jews, Israelis don't practice 100% Judaism. The left Jews, israelis leaders say it's because Jews occupy. (99.9% of Mid-East land is Arab owned) The rightis leaders' jews say it's because Jews, Israelis are too timid and must fight. And I say it's because Jews, Israelis' leaders don't know how to talk to their neighbours, next-door and next country.
27  |   PAMARTY VENKATARAMANA, Friday Dec 12, 2008
Truly analysed-the facts and chain of events in History are self-explanatory.Added to this are 'hard-facts'of textbooks, madarasaas and mullahs aiding and abetting the sinister crimie of Genocides ,Terrorism -all 'War-Crimes'.The bigoted ones of that Faith have become blinded and seem to be holding the majority of their own Faithful to ransom.'YES', It is high time to act swiftly, steadily and in a definitive manner and that WE THE WORLD must no longer continue to wait like sitting-ducks to the butchering and maiming sprees.'UN BAN or no ban,'Terrorize the terrorists'seems to be the adage now!
28  |   Matt McLaughlin Santa Barbara, Calif, Saturday Dec 13, 2008
Re; Terrorists after Jews And google-news reads that the bloody SOBs were speaking of avenging Palestine. But Jews will say this certainly isnt a main reason for terrorism against Jews. But you'll agree that its a starting point, yes?
29  |   Luke, London, Tuesday Dec 16, 2008
Brillantly argued. I wish this piece would appear everywhere. As usual, the mainstream media was late to point out that Jews were once again targeted. Thank you Mr. Harris, for all that you do on all of our behalf.
30  |   Dr S McCosker Australia, Tuesday Dec 16, 2008
I've said it before and I will keep on saying it. Every person here - except Khalid who already knows what the Quran tells him to think about Jews - must read Andrew Bostom, 'The Legacy of Islamic Antisemitism'. It will help you understand just why the jihadists went out of their way to find a rabbi to kill, even in Mumbai with millions of Hindus all around, HIndus who are also prime targets for Muslim hate (tens of millions of Hindus were slaughtered in the course of Muslim jihad & occupation in India).
31  |   adrian , BS. AS. ARGENTINA, Saturday Dec 20, 2008
Dear David A. Harris: This is much more than a nice piece, is a sad and cruel reality, unfortunately we are one step behind the facts, hard things happened anyway for all of us and for the humanity, we use to live under fire all around the world, and this is not new, but nowadays please do not allow that the terrorism kill more innocent people , the time is against us, do not underestimate his power anymore, they have no limits to kill and lie . To finalize i wish Merry Christmas to all our friends , and a very Happy Hanukkah for all of us. G´d bless you!

Careful and thorough anal\ysis of the dangers facing the State of Israel reinforces the belief that \Mahmoud Ahahamadenijad, Bashar Asad, Putin and their myriad of fellow travelers will dance in the streets of Telaviv once it is safe, if a nuclear or biological device wipes out Israel as Mahmoud Ahahamadenijad has repeatedly threatened to do. Every Stateless Jew will be confined to the diaspora fulfiling at least one of Adolf Hitler's dreams.

The jihadist murderers were looking for Jews, and found them. --------------------------- That means that Jews need to see what is wrong with them, and correct it. I am sure that the Palesstinian/israeli conflict is the main cause for all these ills.
34  |   Freddie, San Francisco, Thursday Jan 08, 2009
Antonio, #33, how absurd! If the jihadists are looking to kill Jews, you suggest that Jews need to understand what's wrong with us and "correct it." No, it's the jihadists and their perverted beliefs who need to be examined for their genocidal instincts. Forgive me, but your comment is nothing short of ignorant and insulting.

Susan North NJ: David Harris is one of the most respected opinion makers on the US/Israeli scene. If only his columns & books were required reading on college campuses! American Jews are often self centered losing site of the fact that their behavior affects the outcome of events. The fraudulent "rabbis", the self hating Coen brothers and the Jewish financial thieves are taking us all down. Mr Harris cannot save us from them although god knows he tries.
