There's the story of the mother determined that her five-year-old child should one day be headed for a top college. She decided to pump him with new vocabulary words at every opportunity. When little Charlie came home from school one day, his mother promptly asked, "Charlie, what's the difference between ignorance and indifference?" Totally uninterested, he shrugged his shoulders and muttered, "I don't know and I don't care."

At times, that's the sense I get about today's response to Hamas.

It's as if there is an ignorance - perhaps a willful ignorance, perhaps just intellectual laziness - about what Hamas, which rules Gaza, really means. No, it is not just another political party in some far-off place, but something far more ominous.

Hamas was created in 1988. Its stated goal is the destruction of Israel and its replacement by an Islamic state. Let its covenant speak for itself: "Israel, by virtue of its being Jewish and of having a Jewish population, defies Islam and the Muslims. Let the eyes of the cowards not fall asleep." Or another telling excerpt: "The time will not come until Muslims will fight the Jews [and kill them]; until the Jews hide behind rocks and trees, which will cry: 'O Muslim! There is a Jew hiding behind me, come on and kill him!'"

Twenty years later, the covenant remains unchanged. Hamas, classified as a terrorist group by the US, European Union, Canada, and Japan, remains true to its mission. As Hamas has declared in repeated public statements, "Palestine is Arab Islamic land from the river to the sea, including Jerusalem. There is no room in it for the Jews."

To view Hamas as a group fighting for nothing more than Israel to return to the 1967 lines - or as a credible negotiating partner - stretches credulity to the breaking point. Remember that when Hamas calls for an end to the "occupation," it sees all of Israel as occupied, not just territories acquired in the 1967 war of self-defense.

And then there's the indifference, as if the Israel-Hamas conflict was nothing more than, say, a Middle Eastern version of the Hatfield-McCoy dispute. You know, the notion that the parties have always been fighting, will always be fighting, and no one really understands (or cares) what they are fighting about.

The conflict is not about inertia, much less symmetry, equal responsibility, or that antiseptic "cycle of violence."

Rather, it is a conflict with regional and global implications. Every nation with a stake in democracy, pluralism, and peace can ill afford to see Hamas achieve legitimacy, much less success.

The worldview of Hamas extends far beyond Israel and the Jews. By its own words, it seeks global Islamic domination, the restoration of the transnational Caliphate, rejection of Western values, and the repudiation of basic human rights. It aspires to the "utter destruction" of America. It is a saboteur of any possible move toward Arab-Israeli peace. Its closest allies are Iran, Syria and Hizbullah.

Ask journalists about Hamas' commitment to press freedom since it seized power. Ask the tiny Christian community in Gaza what life is like under radical Islamic rule. Ask women how much freedom they have, other than to produce children for the "cause," as the Hamas Covenant stipulates. Ask gays what rights they have. Ask supporters of Fatah, who were pummeled and tortured in the violent Hamas seizure of power in 2007 - and, in the past week, according to news accounts, have been killed by Hamas as possible "collaborators" with Israel - how much latitude they have.

Ignorance and indifference may be tempting escape valves, but they don't begin to solve the problem.

Israel today faces an entirely unique situation.

It is bordered by a rogue entity led by a group openly calling for its destruction, acquiring ever more advanced weaponry, cavalierly using civilians, including children, as human shields, and celebrating death and destruction in Israel.

Israel is a democratic nation that has repeatedly declared its commitment to a two-state settlement with the Palestinians, has a vested interest in a stable and prosperous Gaza, and goes to unprecedented lengths to avoid civilian deaths.

When has another nation at war regularly contacted civilians on the other side to warn them of impending strikes? When has another nation at war sent humanitarian supplies across its border to assist those on the other side? When has another nation at war continued to admit those on the other side in need of medical care to its hospitals? Israel is doing all three.

These actions speak to Israel's entrenched values as a democratic society. They speak to its desire to differentiate between Hamas, the sworn enemy, and the people of Gaza. And they powerfully remind us that the outcome of this conflict will have profound repercussions for the region and the world.

Don't be discouraged by the ignorant or knowing supporters of the despicable Hamas and other terror groups like them. Here in the U.S. I am afraid there is a residual anti-Semitism in some quarters which inevitably slants news reporting against any actions Israel may take, even self defensive operations. Living across the Detroit River from Windsor, Ontario, Canada, I have used the example of "what if Detroit was being bombarded by rocket fire from nearby Canada?" Obviously, immediate, decisive strikes would result from our side. Why ask Israel to continue to be a sitting duck? Hang tough!

There's none so blind as he that will not see. Everything you say seems obvious to you and me, Mr. Harris, and the only reason the 'Palestinian' supporters do not see it is a total lack of understanding of (or concern about) what faces Israel, and then the wider world, if these monsters are allowed to win. They have been blinded by years, decades, of Arab propaganda of which Goebbels would have been jealous. I pray for Israel, and the peace of Jerusalem.

Well said! i wish every government in Europe would read this, not to mention every anti-Israel demonstrator in the streets who has even a shred of integrity and self-respect.
4  |   Jeremiah, Singapore, Tuesday Jan 06, 2009
Well written and to the point. The conflict is not only between terrorists and Israel but one of idealogies and culture, one which celebrates life and one which celebrates death.
5  |   Asia, Tuesday Jan 06, 2009
A well deserved 5* commentary. It baffles me, how European politicians, with their experience with terrorism, could somehow not appreciate that Israel is doing the right thing, doing its part to weed out terrorism. If Israel is defeated, and USA minds its own business, then the Europe will have to do the job themelves.
6  |   amni, hyderabad, Tuesday Jan 06, 2009
INDIA, SHOULD BE LEASED TO ISRAEL. OUR PEOPLE, LEADERS ..ALL HINDUS LACK COURAGE.. NO ACTION AND COURAGE TO TALK AND TACKLE.. I SUPPORT AND ADMIRE QUICK ACTION..
7  |   Klaus, Hamburg, Germany, Tuesday Jan 06, 2009
If this isn't a clear-cut struggle between democracy and despotism, then I don't know what is. But then again, in our world of moral relativism, some would insanely argue that "good" and "evil" or "right" and "wrong" are anachronisms. Israel, ignore your detractors. Anyway, no matter what you do, you won't satisfy them. But you are valiantly helping the rest of us -- Jews and non-Jews alike -- who reject everything Hamas stands for.
8  |   Mrs CAROLE BROWN -- NORTH WALES, Tuesday Jan 06, 2009
Just want to offer my support to the IDF , putting their lives on the line for the civilians of Israel. My prayers are with you all at this difficult time.
9  |   Ruth London, Tuesday Jan 06, 2009
Asia the reason why European politicians will not stand up for Israel is that they are terrified of Islamic terrorism being unleased in their own countries. The Islamicists have, like the Nazis and other totalitarians before them, used terror to subdue criticism. Just look at how the Spanish are fawning to them.
10  |   M.Robinson, London, Tuesday Jan 06, 2009
David Le Page, Cape Town, the reason Israel does not talk with Hamas is because Hamas WILL NOT negotiate. They are interested only in the total destruction of Israel. This is the absolute fact that 'Palestine' supporters cannot seem to get through their thick skulls. You cannot make peace with a bomb; it's going to explode and kill you no matter what you say or do.
11  |   Manikam from Malaysia, Tuesday Jan 06, 2009
Islamic terrorism must be stopped no matter what. From Asia to Europe Muslims are a problematic group.Hope Isreal will get to the root of all this terrorist problems and make Isreal a safe place to live.IDF keep flushing those terrorist who claim to be a political party(Hamas)
12  |   George, London, England, Tuesday Jan 06, 2009
Fox News had an interesting programme on the son of an Hamas leader who had escaped from Hamas, converted to Christianity, and is now seeking asylum in the US. He had been in a prison where Hamas tortured and killed Muslims who did not obey them. Unfortunately so many people are naive and unaware of the evils of Muslim militant extremists like Hamas, who are true fascists. All those opposed to terrorism need to stick together and fight it together. God Bless You all.
13  |   Lawrence, CA, USA, Tuesday Jan 06, 2009
May G-d bless the IDF, Israel, and all of the worlds supporters of Israels' defensive actions. Israel does not want to kill innocents, Gaza forces them to by hiding behind them, using their houses to store guns and ammunition, and killing anyone who disagrees with them. Like yesterday when they were found to have shot Fatah supporters in the legs "so they cannot help Israel"--this to their OWN people. Imagine what they have in store for the rest of the world.
14  |   Matthew, Canada, Tuesday Jan 06, 2009
Hamas is as violent, dangerous and fanatic as the Israeli right namely the Likud, and since last week, most of the significant political parties in the Knesset. While Hamas' charter states that there is no place for a Jewish state in Palestine, the Israeli right is still imbued with the dream of Eretz Israel, a Jewish majority land(which effectively means the displacement of a part of its Arab population). However, on the two sides, there are moderates, but their voices are silent when they're needed the most, in times of war. The current situation involves 2 extremisms that are irreconcilable
15  |   Jan, Australia, Tuesday Jan 06, 2009
The future is already written. Within a few years Hamas may only be a bad memory. The Hamas quotes sound like the tone of the Quran. But the Torah say those that hate and plot will have their devices turned on them by the God of Israel (Leviticus 19:16-18, Deuteronomy 7:10). Hamas will not prosper as history has already shown, as Jephthah said to the Ammonites when they said Israel had taken their land, 'do you not possess what your god gives you to possess?' The people of Gaza do indeed possess what Hamas's god has has made, they live in the violence they made. But Israel will have Peace.
16  |   Michael - Phenix City, Alabama USA, Tuesday Jan 06, 2009
I really often wonder where to go for common sense anymore. Current global indoctrination favors militant Islam and uses websites like rense.com to spread hatred and anger against Israel under the label of ‘anti-zionism’. More troubling is that I see how this campaign is gathering minds here in the US because we no longer trust our mainstream media. Especially the young, they are drawn to the rhetoric and propaganda that pretends to be humanitarian but as we both know, carries death wherever it goes. I hope that someone, somewhere will counter this and help bring America’s young back to their senses. Israel and the US need each other like the US and England found they did. Only together will we stand and survive what lies ahead. God bless you and. may God teach us the will to fight and win. …

I always thought that if someone refused to recognize my existence...vowed to destroy me...shot rockets at me...and blew themselves up on my buses and in my markets...that person wants to fight me....Hamas is the ELECTED party in Gaza...Hamas represents Gaza...Therefore Hamas and Gaza wanted this fight...now...they have it
18  |   Jerry Premo Washington St ate, Wednesday Jan 07, 2009
The Israeli Arrmy must kill or capture every member of Hamas to insure their existance. Jerry Premo Washington state Former military personnel. Also, why does the American Jewish population continually vote for the Democrats when The Republicans are the only political party in America who support the Jewish state?
19  |   Mary Sperling, Wednesday Jan 07, 2009
Until I visited Israel, I too was ignorant. Facts I didn't know: 1) History of 1947 intention of Britian to create two states, one Jewish and one Arab in the Holy Lands which didn't happen because 2) Jordan took over the West Bank in 1947, occupied it until 1967, and only in 1988 released its claim. 3) "Palestinians" are Arabs who live in the West Bank, Jordan, parts of Syria, and Lebananon. Jews are viewed as European invaders 4) Christians are being driven out of the Holy Lands, yet the Christian West doesn't complain. Why? 5) Humas as zero tolerance for both Jews and Christians.
20  |   R. Markowitz, Western Shomron, Israel, Wednesday Jan 07, 2009
B"H The people of Gaza are held hostage by their own political choice. If they voted Hamas they are all Hamas. If their leader use them as shields or cannon fodder or even fertilizer for next year's crops, you cant blame Israel. Israel is only guilty of stupidity and believing in fantasies. Land for peace doesn't work. If we train and arm their security forces, they use these weapons to kill us. All of our humanitarian concerns make us look weak in their eyes. Where were all of the concerned people when missiles were only falling on Israeli children? The world is to blame for its' indifference.
21  |   RONIE OF PHIILIPPINES, Wednesday Jan 07, 2009
France,Britain, spain and most of Europe's leaders appears to be tough but in reality they are cowards.they're afraid to make a stand to islamist threat.they are playing blind and ignorant to the true motive and plan of islamist to someday dominate their country.wake up europe! before its too late. israel is doing the right thing of defending their own country, their lives, their freedom so that we too can enjoy life.we should thank and pray for israel's success bcause of doing things beneficial for our existence. GO ISRAEL
22  |   Than Lwin, Singapore, Wednesday Jan 07, 2009
No army in the world is more professional than Isreali defence forces, no democracy in the world is more mature than Isreal's, no decision or action is thoroughly debated and well-consulted than the one come from Isreali leaders, nobody's ideology and implimentation of it in it's activities (in terrorism) is more terrifying and more dangerous to civilizations than Hamas' & Hizbullah's. What else choice Isreal can have other than destrying them and taking them out from existance in this world? Despite being an Asian far away their land, I cannot find any reason not to feel for Isrealis.
23  |   r nevies london, Wednesday Jan 07, 2009
excellent articulate analysis. it should be front page news on every paper in the world. when so many apparently intelligent people controlling the media in the west are willfully ignorant and indifferent, the only explanation is hatred of the jew.
24  |   Stuart Kidder, Tampa FL, Wednesday Jan 07, 2009
A Christian in Tampa who supports the actions of the IDF and your political leaders. Those who vow to destroy Isreal, will not just stop at the river and the sea, but will continue to spread their version of hate and destruction. God bless the nation of Israel. Do what you you must do, do not worry about "international pressure" and don't finish till Hamas is completely wiped out.
25  |   John David, British Columbia, Canada, Wednesday Jan 07, 2009
What's that expression, "Tell me who your friends are and I'll tell you who you are"? Who are the friends of Hamas? Well, let's see, to begin with, there's thuggish Venezuela, belligerent Iran, and represive Syria. That's more than enough to persuade me, a non-Jew far from the Middle East, that I stand with Israel. Shouldn't the same choice be obvious to anyone who cares not just about the Middle East, but the larger state of the world?
26  |   David. California, USA., Wednesday Jan 07, 2009
No other nation in the world would tolerate having Qassams filled with ball bearings and other vicious weapons raining down on its towns and forcing its population to live in constant terror. I pray that G-d may protect the men and women of the IDF and that they may rid the world of the likes of Hamas, for Israel and the civilians' sake. Israel has shown remarkable restraint in dealing with these cowardly terrorists. Where is the international outcry when Israeli children are killed by rockets? Godspeed to Israel and her citizens!
27  |   m.raynor USA, Wednesday Jan 07, 2009
Dear Sir, You are right on the ball. The west has become bankrupt in more than one way. The politicians have lost the right to be in the positions they are in,as they will not speak up nor stand up in defence of their voters. They have no moral commitment, to explain to the masses what is at stake. All of the democracies are in the firiing line,if not today then tomorrow. Their own childeren and grand childeren are in danger. Yours sincerely, M.Raynor.

Thursday 6 pm at Gan Soccer, Jerusalem, Israel there is to be a rally to support OUR IDF TROOPS! Please wear blue and white and bring YOUR ISRAELI FLAGS!
29  |   Paul - Netherlands EU, Wednesday Jan 07, 2009
Yea right, most people commenting in the western countries have never been in the M.E. If I hadn't been to Egypt I would not understand why borderguards at Raffah keep the gates closed if they see fellow muslims suffer on the other side of the fence. If I hadn't seen Israel with my own eyes, I wouldn't know the difficulties in living side by side of Arabs, Bedoeins and Israeli (and Druze) while Israeli's come from Russia, France, USA etc.etc. On top of that there are Pals PLUS some hard line Hamas idiots. Politicians in their armchairs in Europe etc. should shut up commenting. IDF go !!
30  |   Steven N, Wednesday Jan 07, 2009
Israel should never negotiate with Hamas. The only thing to do to achieve peace is to destroy Hamas. Annihilate them. That is the only way you can ever deal with terrorists.
31  |   Manuel - California USA, Wednesday Jan 07, 2009
Again, well said and very true. The article is right in saying that these radical islamists is really after for global dominance. I said this because in our country, the Philippines, the radical muslims (jama islamiah, abu sayafs and the milf), never stop sowing terror particularly in the south, the Mindanao. They declared our Mindanao "THEIRS". I pray for the safety of the men and women of the IDF and hope they attain their objective, which is the total safety of the Isrealis living peacefully. IDF, give these hamas extremists the hell they deserve.
32  |   Joe, Denmark, Wednesday Jan 07, 2009
In fact, the western world holds the keys to the resolution of the problem. Stop all aid and commercial exchange until a series of conditions is met, such as: Syria's disengagement from terrorist backing, Egyptian wholehearted stop of smuggling into Gaza, and a Palestinian abstention from terror rockets and human bombs. The Arabs should mature and start creating a civic legal prosperous society, and not vegetate in a limbo of vague expectation and blaming others for their misfortunes--just think of the lost opportunities during Arafat's regime.
33  |   PatS, Wednesday Jan 07, 2009
Do not let the Palestinian Authority President Mamoud Abbas fool you either. Though at this time, Hamas is the greater of two evils. As with Arafat, Abbas goes to the West speaking peace, returns to Gaza or the West Bank declaring the destruction of Israel. As with Hamas, the Fatah movement also wants Israel destroyed. They just want the two state issue settled in order to strengthen their position, arm themselves with more sophisticated weapons and then go after Israel. Time make Hamas (and Fatah) understand, Israel will not take it any longer. Stop the attacks or perish. Go IDF.
34  |   Eric Schwartz, Wednesday Jan 07, 2009
I read an editor's opinion in the Jordan Times bashing Israel for its "massacre" against the civilians in Gaza stating this was not because of "silly rockets". I wonder what their response would be if "silly rockets" were fired upon their civilians for years on end. It further bashed Israel for their punishing sanctions on the Gaza strip. How would any nation respond to an entity bent on their destruction? Look at their values. Hiding behind innocent civilains. Firing rockets from schools, mosques and hospitals. Jews outnumbered by 1000 to 1 in the world, so who are the real bullies?
35  |   Michael Larsen Sweden, Wednesday Jan 07, 2009
I suport the state of Israels right to defend itself against against terror organisations like Hamas. It upsets me when listening to the media of my own country (Sweden), how it blames Israel for "being too aggressive in Gaza". They (the media here), forgets, too often that Hamas on it´s agenda has the "destruction of Israel".
36  |   Jerry, Dutch living in Israel, Wednesday Jan 07, 2009
A good example of ingnorance and not knowing the facts, is when I heard the former major of London, Livingston saying " over 100 palistinians are killed compared to only three jews" He completely miss the point that this is Israel defending its citizens, jews, moslims, druzes, christians and many others. In fact it has nothing to do with Judaism. By the way, among the three "jews" killed by Hamas was one Druze, one Arab and a Jew......
37  |   Zia India, Wednesday Jan 07, 2009
Well I can only say here, that a war can never bring peace. Ofcourse there will be result, & a winner. But whats the use of it after death of millions of people, whats the use of that peace, which cannot bring smile. "This World is not enough for us"...
38  |   Dave, New York, Wednesday Jan 07, 2009
Israel refuses to believe that anti-Semitism exists, and continues to challenge it on a rational and intellectual level. Jews throughout history have made the same mistake. Jew-haters will always find a justification for their beliefs. Therefore, Jews should stop worrying so much about them, and Israel should do what it needs to do. Like any mature nation, Israel should put every effort into putting an end to the existential threats that it faces; which unfortunately live next door.
39  |   Jt, Wednesday Jan 07, 2009
Outright blind hatred on the part of Hamas has brought them to destruction. They admittedly use their own people to shield themselves. Nobody wants to see innocents be killed however, if a group of people elect a government that states annihilation of any race or country as it's policy then they should prepare for a war of annihilation. At this point it's either Hamas or Israel and I would expect Israel to defend itself not sit there and accept the barbaric policies of Hamas (i.e. continuous firing of rockets at Israel's civilian population).
40  |   Suzanne - New Zealand, Wednesday Jan 07, 2009
I have to say, although I already knew that the Israeli's are not in the wrong, your article has really explained a lot to me! I'm finding even our news is very bias and seem to forget all the attacks Israel received for it to come to this. My prayers are with those in Israel
41  |   Rod - Sanford, Maine, Wednesday Jan 07, 2009
The liberal media of the Us would like to find a peaceful solution. Only one can be found - the complete destruction of Hamas.
42  |   Doug Australia, Thursday Jan 08, 2009
Although I would Vote for PEACE, I know that is a fantasy my prayer is that the IDF is kept safe and is able take this evil out quickly.
43  |   Jack Frost - Dallas, TX, Thursday Jan 08, 2009
It is amusing if disheartening to see people strech and bend over backwards trying to equate the Israeli actions to the behavior of Hamas and friends. Are they really that stupid or ignorant? My view is that they are scared stiff of Islamic retribution if the rest of us refuse to lay down and be subjugated or buried. The communists killed literally MILLIONS in quest of their ideal world, the Islamists are not as capable but are even more motivated as they presume to have Allah on their side. It is a scary scenario, but one which leaves no room for naiviety.
44  |   Adrian, Thursday Jan 08, 2009
This is a great article, finally something serious and appropriate to the situation and conditions. I'm tired of the tabloidism of this and other newspapers, media in general, who look and sound like the "National Inquirer's" front page with tugging-at-the-heartstrings text and photos of "children, women, pregnant women, old men" as if that's who Israel targets and not armed terrorists hiding among civilians, and as if war is not supposed to have victims! As if Hamas while it constantly provokes Israel with rockets and suicide bombings, doesn't know they'll be victims if Israel responds!
45  |   Karen Juneau, Alaska, Thursday Jan 08, 2009
Thank you for making more clear the Hamas' foundations. I hope peace comes for Israel (and to the rest of the world who mourn all of this in spirti) soon, before more heartache. There is one thing about all out war though, that is usually left out. What if most of the Hamas leadership has a change of heart. What if most come to see the error of violence as a means to attain a normal way of life? What if all of the acts of humanity from Israel manage to touch and change their souls? The children of Gaza don't deserve the suffering either--how do we make more fluid world peace efforts? Best Lov
46  |   Pops Midwestern United States, Thursday Jan 08, 2009
An excellent explanation and accounting of what is going on in Gaza. It is to bad that so many people here in the US and in Europe fail to comprehend the seriousness of the situation. Hamas is out to convert the world to the Muslim faith or as they say kill those who refuse to convert. Ruth London #9 is exactly right. Europe is terrified of the Muslims all ready in their country. The Spanish train bombing and the recent airport bombing in Great Britain are examples of Muslim terror.
47  |   Arthur. New Zealand, Thursday Jan 08, 2009
The reason that the leaders of the European countries such as Britain , France , and Germany are reluctant to accept and voice that Israel is reacting in a last chance justifiable manner against a cowardly bunch of thugs is that they they have taken in so many of the Muslim faith. Unfortunately instead of accepting the ways of their adopted country many of them have not been given the freedom of lifestyle and freedom of thinking so that they collectively act in protest against anything Jewish. This causes unwanted difficulties with the Politicians who just want a quiet life. PS. I am not Jewish
48  |   Bird of Paradise Hawaii, Thursday Jan 08, 2009
It surprises me how many fail to realize that the conflict is that the Palestinians have never stopped fighting the 1948 war (for the independence of Israel). They have not "surrendered" or entered into any treaty or agreed to any permanent secession of hostilities. It is simply the Palestinians at war with Israel. Many, if not most Palestinians, however, would agree to a two-state solution if accompanied by a massive compensatory settlement for the loss of homes, businesses and property in place of the "right to return." Perhaps Fatah will one day consider this option. Hamas never will.
49  |   Joe, Chicago, Thursday Jan 08, 2009
The anti-Israeli protester seen around the world is a disease. Israel must win or humanity will fall into a pit of darkness.
50  |   Louis the scooterer, Thursday Jan 08, 2009
Very well written..My question is..why are there NOT many other similar (easy to read and to understand) articles IN JPOST ? Seems to me that most of your readers (certainly most comments) are from people living OUT of Israel. You should "hit hard" and write more similar articles in many other places..and to "letters"..and invite more readers to follow you.Again...well done.
51  |   Susan, Thursday Jan 08, 2009
After watching film of the recent Palestinian protest in downtown Ft. Lauderdale I am heartened to find the comments here are in line with mine. That protest is, in my opinion, just the beginning of pressure from people who have emigrated here and now take the opportunity to try to change our culture to theirs. I won't be around that much longer but I hope that European and American citizens will wake up and destroy such ambitions. This protest is just the beginning. I hope that the FBI has made note of those faces, identifies them and keeps track of their whereabouts.

What illogical flights of fantasy have issued from your mind David Harris. Reading your article reminded me of the absurd accusations made during the Cold War about a world communist conspiracy which existed only in the minds of American perpetrators. You too demonstrate a very narrow, partisan view, lacking in any real understanding of the Arab world. Your false accusations only add fuel to an already tragic situation.
53  |   RW, United States, Thursday Jan 08, 2009
You have many friends in the United States. Ignore our mainstream media's anti-semitism. Do what you must to defend yourself.
54  |   Georgette, New York, Thursday Jan 08, 2009
Pray tell, Vinegar Hill, where are the "false accusations" in this article? Lots of luck in trying to find them. As far as I'm concerned, this article is 100% on the money.
55  |   Gino,Lombard IL. USA, Friday Jan 09, 2009
NOW! this could be the begining of the END of Hamas! As a Nation and People Israel Must do what must be done- Protect, Defend and Survive! Aquiesence to those who advocate constant appeasement will yield more of the same... Madness! Hamas is just another obstacle that Israel must face and overcome. Let's remember, Peace and Harmony is the Ultimate Objective. To those Brave Defenders of ISRAEL....God's Speed!
56  |   Voislav Ognyanov, M.D., Friday Jan 09, 2009
When you keep using the same methods(military force) for over 40 years and expect different results, there must be something wrong with you. Israel will never have peace unless completly changes its approach. This way they only produce more terrorists and extremists because occupied and abused people have no other means to fight the occupier. The palestinians have been dehumanised, expelled from their land and homes, jailed and killed. Israel reminds me of a severely abused child who grew up to become an abuser.
57  |   Vinegar hill, Madrid, Spain., Friday Jan 09, 2009
Georgette: I do not deny the stated aims of Hamas which Harris has quoted, in particular their desire for "global Islamic domination". What I do take offense to is the absurdity of this idea becoming a reality because of the insignificant role that Hamas plays in M-E and global politics. Added to this is the total lack of analysis by Harris to put the issue into a broader perspective. The result of his lack of scholarship produces a falsity. Consequently, his totally biased, slanted article leads many innocent readers like yourself to be drawn in and accept his "false accusations".
58  |   Cape Town South Africa, Friday Jan 09, 2009
On behalf of all the Pro-Israel supporters in South Africa I pay my deepest apology to your ambassador in South Africa for the bad treatment and the pathetic anti-Israel demonstrations. Our pro-palestine communist government is an embarrasment to every intelligent human being. Go Israel!
59  |   Mike, Republic of Ireland, Friday Jan 09, 2009
An excellent article and what a pity we in Western Europe - and Ireland in particular, are not afforded more opportunities to hear the facts rather than blinkered views of a very biased media, who see Hamas as victims rather than perpetrators of violence and the true aggressor. When will people realise that Israels frontline fight against fundamentalist terror is also their fight. I salute the IDF and wish the people of Sderot & those others who have suffered indiscriminate attacks from Hamas will soon find their oppressors and also their Iranian masters vanquished for once and for all.

From Spain, my support to Israel. Please, make the necessary effort to avoid civilian casualties, but please, don't waste this opportunity to free Palestian people from terror, please don't waste this unique opportunity to establish a new status by virtue of which terrorism is defeated. Probably you won't have many opportunities to do this in the future. Please, if you want to secure a secure Israel, don't waste your actual chance. Now is the time to fight for peace. Please stop the traffic of arms forever in Gaza. Do it now! Paz para ti, gran pueblo de Israel. Paz para ti, Yerushalayim.

Joaquin: You seem to have a rather perverted sense of the road to peace. Israel and the Palestinians have been slaughtering each other for sixty decades and you advocate a continuation of the killing! You need to shrugh off your hatred and inhuman attitude and think about other alternatives. It is people like you and their lust for a bloody solution that partly encourages continuation of slaughter. Are you capable of stepping out of your perversion?

Precisely, Vinegar Hill, I want a lasting peace, and justice. It seems to me that you read want you want to read. I love Palestinians and Israelis. But with Hamas it is impossible to have peace. And the sufferings will never have an end. Yes, Israel must stop now the operations, if Hamas stops terrorism. I want peace and life and prosperity for both Palestinians and Israelis. But terrorism is an enormous threat for the world. I absolutely hate violence. Palestinians deserve THE BEST. Don't read things that I don't write. I love the best Islam, an Islam of mercy. Peace and justice.

It is sad that the world is blaming Israel for what is happening in Gaza. Hamas broke the ceasefire. Hamas charter calls for the complete annihilation of Israel. As such, Israel has every right to defend itself against such terrorist group. It is sad that Hamas uses human shields in an attempt to defame the IDF. However, this should not stop Israel from destroying the fabrics of Hamas.

Israel has bent over backward down to an impossible angle to accommodate a w0rld clamoring for a so-called peace with people hell-bent on his destruction. In so doing,he is following GOD'S Rules For Peace And War. Now the spring of Israel surges back to its original shape and those who want to break it are learning.

I do not disagree with a thing in Harris's article. Yet I do not agree that Israel has no option but war. Israel, perhaps with the support of other democracies should bring its own proposal to the U.N. Security Council: Nations of the world horrified by what is happening in Gaza, should be asked to create an International military force to create a "No Man Zone" that will extend beyond the range of Hamas' newest rockets and another such zone on the Egyptian border with Gaza. If Hamas or any nation that rejects such a plan, then they ought to be declared complicit in the ongoing killing.

I like this blog. It seems to cover most points well. Bernie's comments (#65 - Bernie, HI, USA) are well intentioned, I'm sure. But, he is naive. If such a 'no-man's zone' were set up as he describes, then its width would be determined by the range of Hamas rockets - which keep increasing with more deliveries from Iran, via the tunnels that Egypt pretends to not notice most of the time. Since these rockets now hit Beersheva, we would have to clear out a 28-mile-wide zone around Gaza - evacuating how many tens of thousands of Isralis? What happens when the rockets go 50 miles? It won't work.

Odon Sabo, Cedar Park, TX: Remember that God is always in controll. Stop looking in the mirror and look where you are going as we speak, can't you see the ditches that have been dug right in front of you? Once again the Beast has risen and is hungry for Gods Children, including us few true Christians. Put your trust in Him alone. Just don't look at the main stream Christianity today, insted, read the New Testament, and pray like you never prayed before. Enter your New Kingdom Jews, it has arived some time ago, and the door is almost closing to it. This New Jerusalem will last forever, I can almost see it descending.
Felix on the Gulf of Mexico: I tried to warn many folks prior to November 4, 2008, Mr. Barack Obama was not the Sir Lancelot they thought him to be. Brother, was I right? Shouldn't we better call him Sir Lies-a-Lot? Seven (7) million Muslims in these United States of America? Where!?! Guinevere come get your man; he's done it again!
