I know I shouldn't be surprised any longer, but I still can't help it.

In a recent edition of The New York Times, after seeing 25 column inches on page 4 devoted to an article entitled "Israel Rebukes 2 in Attack on U.N. Complex," I read a short news item two pages later. It wasn't quite eight lines long, the fourth of five items under "World Briefing."

Here are the first two (of three) sentences:

A human rights group criticized Jordan on Monday for stripping the citizenship of nearly 3,000 Jordanians of Palestinian origin in recent years. Concerned about increasing numbers of Palestinians, who make up nearly half the population, Jordan began in 2004 revoking the citizenship from Palestinians who do not have Israeli permits to reside in the West Bank."

Apart from the scanty news coverage of what is, after all, an important story - thousands of people losing their citizenship as a country seeks to tilt its delicate demographic balance - there is, of course, another issue.

Apart from the group that blew the whistle on this years-old policy, where is the outcry?

When Israel is accused, however unjustly, of any alleged misdeed against the Palestinians, the din is immediate and deafening. But when fellow Arabs are shown to be inflicting real damage on the Palestinians, there's hardly a peep.

Since the story surfaced nearly a week ago, I've looked in vain for editorials, columns, op-ed pieces, or letters-to-the-editor on the citizenship policy. Couldn't find a thing.

I checked on the usual addresses that profess to care about the Palestinian fate - the UN General Assembly, UN Human Rights Council, UN Special Rapporteur on the Palestinian Territories, Arab League, Organization of the Islamic Conference, and Non-Aligned Movement, among others - and found nothing.

I looked at the usually loquacious individuals and groups for whom the Palestinian issue is the alpha and omega of human rights questions - the first and last example of refugees ever produced by conflict - and met a blank slate.

Silence from the mayor of Malmo. Silence from the London School of Economics Student Union. Silence from the British trade unionists who want to boycott Israel. Silence from the Norwegian academics who wish to shun their Israeli counterparts. Silence from those who seek to remove Israeli products from Trader Joe's and Carrefour supermarkets. Silence from the media outlets that can be counted on to slam Israel for every perceived violation of Palestinian rights. Well, you get the point.

In other words, when Israel takes action to defend itself, pro-Palestinian forces around the world are ready to mobilize at a moment's notice with emergency sessions, self-righteous indignation, heated resolutions, angry protests, boycotts, letter-writing campaigns and over-the-top ads.

Yet, these very same forces are AWOL if Israel is not involved. They simply can't be bothered. Suddenly, their self-described anguish over the Palestinian plight evaporates.

And, of course, this isn't the first such instance.

Here are two other examples.

In 1990, Saddam Hussein ordered Iraqi forces to occupy Kuwait, claiming it was a province of his country. After the Iraqi military was ousted, Kuwaiti officials ordered the expulsion of 300,000 - 400,000 Palestinians who had been living in the country, in some cases for decades. The Palestinians were accused of having served as a fifth column for Iraq. Out they went.

Stop to think about it. An entire community was labeled subversive and kicked out en masse. That's a pretty heavy-duty step by a government that offered no judicial recourse, no right of appeal and no compassion for the broken lives.

Where were pro-Palestinian forces at the time? Again, missing in action. They couldn't pin the blame directly on Israel - although indirectly they blame everything that happens to the Palestinians on Israel's very being - so the fate of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians fleeing Kuwait didn't cause them sleepless nights.

Or how about the situation of Palestinians living in Lebanon? According to UNRWA, there are over 400,000 Palestinians registered with the UN agency. Most have been there for decades. In line with UNRWA policy, there is no mandate to resettle these Palestinians or future generations. Rather, they are deliberately kept as "refugees," unlike any other such population in the world.

Meanwhile, the Lebanese government has adopted resolutions and decrees over the years effectively aimed at the Palestinians in the country. "Foreigners," meaning Palestinians, are restricted from working in over 70 different professions in Lebanon, including medicine, dentistry, law and accounting.

Moreover, Palestinian refugees in Lebanon cannot today purchase property, and those who bought land before 2001 are barred from passing it on to their children. Only Lebanese citizens have the right to form non-governmental organizations. Palestinian refugees must do so through others since they are not accorded the chance to acquire Lebanese nationality.

Pretty draconian stuff. Yet, once again, where is the moral outrage of those who claim concern for the welfare of the Palestinian people? Why the telling silence?

Oh yes, I had forgotten. It's not Israel placing the stiff restrictions on Palestinian professional activity, land purchases, or the formation of civic associations, so it doesn't pass muster as a cause worth pursuing.

If this isn't a case of rank hypocrisy and transparent double standards, then what is?

The BBC similarly censored this news outright both from its TV and website, too! Talk about CREDIBILTY!

While this may be a shameful process of denying Settlers of Palestinian origin in their country it has been a long standing practise of Arab nations of keeping the Palestinians evicted by the creation of a "foreign state" (Israel) on their land from dealing with the refugee problem it created.
3  |   Kal USA, Sunday Feb 07, 2010
At no time since 1948 have the Arab nations treated teh Palestinians well. They were relegated to the job of being the trod upon poor folks who proved that Israel should not be permitted to survive. So far as I am aware no Arab nation allows Palestinian males over the age of 18 who are unemployed to reside anywhere other than a refugee camp. They may not even reside in their family's home if their parents are gainfully employed.

Mr. Harris, as always, thank you. I consider your articles must-reading. Always clearly, cogently and convincingly written. Wish there were more eloquent spokesmen like you.
5  |   Ben, Sunday Feb 07, 2010
For World press the palestinians are simply an instrument for Israel bashing. Not only Ny.times but conservative Foxnews can make an article for example: "...Palestinian girl decapitated."-of course by Israelies.(by blowing casual shell you`l know later)
6  |   Walter USA, Sunday Feb 07, 2010
Mr. Harris, it is widely accepted outside Zionist circles, including among Jews, that 'Palestinians' are citizens of the Land of Israel who are currently being persecuted by 'Israel'. At a deeper level, Jordanian actions are widely seen as Jordan's goodfaith effort to appease the Israeli government. In other words, Jordan is so willing to tolerate the 'state of Israel' that it is willing to take small steps to punish enemies of the 'state of Israel', just to have peace. Blowback from this kind of support is powerful, and, so far, recognition of its implications have been ignored by Israel.

Yes, the Muslims get a pass for their extraordinary human rights atrocities while Israel is condemned for the slightest and questionable violation . But if I were a Muslim, I would be insulted by this patronizing approach. It expresses the West's belief that Muslims are primitive and childish natives and hence cannot be held accountable for their actions. Note how the US was attacked for rendition to torturing countries while nobody even thought of criticizing the torturing countries to whom the suspects were sent. White man's burden, right?
8  |   steve tel aviv, Sunday Feb 07, 2010
For a people who condemn gays, the Palestinians are sure taking it up the ass, and from their 'brothers.'
9  |   Mireille Mechoullam, USA, Sunday Feb 07, 2010
Like the saying: the more things change, the more they remain the same. If there is problems in Tombuktu which has nothing with Israel. You guessed it; ISRAEL IS THE GUILTY ONE. And that's why I said in the past and saying again today; ISRAEL SHOULDN'T BEEN CONCERN BY THE USA OR ENGLAND OR FRANCE ETC...... BECAUSE IF ISRAEL WHOULD DISAPEAR NO ONE WILL DROP A TEAR, SO ISRAEL SHOULD DO WHAT'S GOOD FOR ISRAEL ONLY AND NOT WHAT'S GOOD FOR THE NATIONS OF THE WORLD.

Is there any way to bring charges in European courts against the boycotters and the ones spreading hatred just using this very same points: no crime is committed unless by Israel? this argument should be used in a court, this hypocrisy is simple spreading racism and antisemitism and is illegal in many countries. For far less Dutch MP Wilders is being sued for spreading anti-muslim feelings. If he would raise his voice against Israel he would have been praised. Please Jewish lawyerss, wake up and bring a legal action in the courts of Europe!

David: Why don't you make this issue your next radio commercial for the Osgood File on WCBS, instead of non-controversial bromides from the AJC about energy independence for the US or criticism of Ahmedinijad who most Americans already assume is a head case?
12  |   Nathan, Monday Feb 08, 2010
It's never been about Palestinians, only about Israel. These self righteous groups and individuals could not give a damn about the Palestinians. They use the Palestinians as pawns to direct their hatred of Israel. In this, they are no better (perhaps worse) than the Arab countries who have done the same for decades.

We are back in the Middle Ages, when public hysteria accused the Jews of causing the Black Death.
14  |   joseph davidovic, Monday Feb 08, 2010
I am shocked that you seem shocked. Ahem...let's go back a scant 70 years or so and the most educated and enlightened culture in modern Europe decided almost unanimously that - well, the Jews had outlived their welcome in Europe. Since there was nowhere to really ship them out to, Europe decided to tackle "the Jewish Problem" in it's own ingenious way. Let's just say that the rest is history or perhaps just current events -- by the look of things. Don't you think?
15  |   Roddy Frankel, Monday Feb 08, 2010
I once had a similar discussion with a Harvard pro-Palestinian activist, When I asked him about these other human rights violations, he claimed ignorance about them. This illustrates precisely the problem with so many left wing anti-Zionists: they're either ignorant, or they're liars. In the case of this Harvard student, I would have to guess the latter.
16  |   dennis snapper netanya, Monday Feb 08, 2010
Kafka would have loved to see his dark fantasies become reality today. Hamas uses hum,an shields in warfare, Israel is accused of firing at civilians, Hamas fires 8000 rockets at Israel, Israel goes into gaza to destroy the islamists, Gilad Shalit is kidnapped 3 and one half years later, no red cross not a word on his condition Hamas wants to trade him for 1000 terrorists who will fior sure attack Israelis again, and the world condems Israel for excessive force and war crimes.Oops, is it possible that I smell the stink of antisemitism here?
17  |   Chris USA, Monday Feb 08, 2010
When I read these types of reports I am convinced the attention focused on Israel is intended as an attack. The silence regarding countries like Jordan demonstrate that there is no credible interest in the collective good of palestinians. Israel is the boggyman of the Middle East and the palestinians are a convenient excuse for moral prevarication. One does not expect bread from thistles or figs from sour grapes. In like manner truth does not dwell in the dark abodes of ignorance, for what has light to do with darkness? Rather does not the light of reason banish the darkness of ignorance?

great but you are preaching to the choir. You should be trying to get published in the NY TIMES or NY POST. Get the word out....our biggest enemy is ourselves and our stetle mentality. It is no longer acceptable. we cannot trust our politicians or for the most part the leftist press, we only have ourselves and the end result is simply that. We need to get the word out, not the placating, condesending, sorry type which are are very good at, but rather the strong, sure and confident word that we are a nation, we are a power but intellectually and physically and we are a force to be dealth with
19  |   Howard, Monday Feb 08, 2010
Just follow the money and the pattern is completely clear. There never was any money or support available to any Palestinian support groups. Similarly, there is no political capital available to any European politician for supporting an end to the refugee issue. Both money and support are available in excess for anti-Semitism and outright Jew hatred. Iran's leader called for Israel's destruction and not a word was heard. Let's face it, the Arabs seek our outright elimination and much of the world is in agreement. The world has not changed in 2000 years.

You need to get your blog published by more mainstream global papers to get the point across. Excellent post
21  |   Edith Shaked, Monday Feb 08, 2010
And where is the outcry against Yad Vashem, when they keep neglecting to tell in English the story of the Jews in North African Jews in the Holocaust? If Holocaust deniers would have said there was no master plan to kill all the Jews of the world, there would have been an outcry from Yad Vashem and the ADL. But if Holocaust scholars at Yad Vashem are telling there should be research on Holocaust OUTSIED Europe, ignoring the North African Jews were considered Europeans (many died in WWI), nobody is saying a word - going along and getting along in academic circles, and accepting Yas Vashem
22  |   Michael Greenberg, Monday Feb 08, 2010
Exactly true--COMPLETE DOUBLE STANDARDS -they really don't care about the PALS--"getting ISRAEL" is much more importantto them...So it is not some absolute "HUMAN RIGHTS" issue at all-rather just "Get the Jews"--as :ALWAYS in history...Nobody really gives a fig newtron about the PALs TRUTH be told....Nevertheless the PALS have a "plight" and nobody is more empathic to their "Plight" than the gliberal Jews ....My solution: CONVERT the PALS to JUDAISM-if they accept they will be equal owners of THE LAND -but experience the WORLD"s anti-Semutism themselves. Can't have everything perfect.
23  |   Henry Schneider, Rye, NY, Tuesday Feb 09, 2010
I agree that it is rank hypocrisy for the world community to give a free pass to Arab mistreatment of Arabs while at the same time denying Israel that same freedom.
24  |   Reamey Bragassa, Tuesday Feb 09, 2010
I'm on your side Mr. Harris, but whining gets you no where. The same jerks that push the Palestinians agenda also push the "progressive" agenda in the US. Start voting for Constitution, small government and low taxes in Americal. The US still leads and not Palestinians. You cannot have a peaceful solution with liars. Just look at who has kept Israel free vs who has "made peace". Si vis pacem para bellum

It is easy for these moral watch dogs and protecting angels to lambast Israel. If they did the same to iran malaysia, egypt, syria lebanon, pa hamas hezbouleh etc they would be lucky to only be expelled. Most likely they would disappear or beaten.Attacking Israel is a cowards way of claiming moral superiority. When hamas pa plo fatah summarily execute people in the streets there is silence. When iran or syria hold secret trials and execute people there is silence. If Israel inconveniences or "insults" a turkish diplomat thee is outcry. Where was the outcry when Peres was insulted at Davos?
26  |   Taylor Hanes - Canada, Tuesday Feb 09, 2010
The HAMA massacres of the muslim brotherhood in Syria is perhaps the best example of a huge arab atrocity not being reported. In fact most of my arab/muslim student friends have never heard of it (all syrians are familiar however!) Shocking! The big double standard in israels favour must be the nuclear weapons issue. No major western power or even the UN has even mildly "requested" israel to allow nuclear weapons inspectors or face sanctions- this despite incredibly strong evidence of nuclear weapons and israel refusing to come clean with its program. It is quite amazing really.

As I read your blog David, I remembered that I watched Fareed Zakaria GPS on Sunday where he interviewed His Majesty King Abdullah II over the weekend. Not a word. NOT A QUESTION about it. Yet when I went to CNN "World" page to get the correct spelling of his Zakaria's name, the top featured two for four video stories about Israel. One with raw footage of rocks being thrown at police vehicles in "East Jerusalem" with no context, no story, not even voice over, just rocks and vehicles, the other about a possible Israeli hit on Mahmoud al-Mabhouh. No proof mind you. Just accusations as always.
28  |   Mike SF, USA, Tuesday Feb 09, 2010
There is only ONE explanation. Virulent Jew hatred, alive and well. They all wisper under the cover of darkness "Hilter did not finish the job"; some shout it loudly. The world ignores us and wishes we would all just go away. Too, the West has lost its moral compass. Five hundred years plus since Guttenburg, and freedom of speech is still an elusive goal.

Have the Swedes not understood the historical lesson pertinent to the matter of Abram's (Abraham's) first child, Ishmael (Isma'il), Hagar (the Egyptian handmaid) bore him? "And the angel of the Lord said unto her (Hagar); "Behold, thou art with child, and shalt bear a son; and thou shalt call his name "Ishmael, because the Lord hath heard thy affliction. And he shall be a wild ass of a man; his hand shall be against every man, and every man's hand against him; and he shall dwell in the face of all his brethren." The Arabs refuse to be introspective. Thus, isn't it easier to blame Israel?

I am never surprised by hypocrisy! J.H. Hertz, 1915: Our virtues are Israel’s: all our success in life we owe to the fact that the blood of the toughest of peoples is coursing in our veins. Our vices our own. The world inverts the distribution. Our virtues it credits to us (as individuals)…Whereas the crimes, vices and failings of any single Jew, no matter how estranged… (are fathered) upon the entire Jewish race. Is it not a matter of sacred honor…to counteract the world’s injustice to our people by rendering when the opportunity is ours, some repayment for all we owe to Israel?

From whence do these Palestinians originate? Shouldn't they have a right of return to those places?
32  |   Judith Grayson, USA, Sunday Feb 14, 2010
it is ugly anti-semitism with everything from blood libels to twisted history and outright lies, rumors with no basis in fact. there seems to be no way to counter this constant barrage of jew hatred. there is nothing rational about it, so there's no point in trying to have a dialogue. the jews have to go about their business and forget about the usual concern for other groups and others problems. whatever is in the interest of israel and its jewish citizens is the only priority.

Sunni and Shiite killing each other every day in Muslim lands, opium fuelled Islamofascists and thugs running amok answerable only to Allah ,madmen in Tehran brutally quashing a regime change ,illiterate peasants running a thriving smuggling empire in Hamastan,Islamic killing machines carrying on the daily slaughter unabated ,what a wonderful world .

For Unclesmrgrl and others who don't know who the Palestinians are: A good reference would be the book "From Time Immemorial" by Joan Peters, published in 1983. According to historical records thoughout the Middle-East, and England who occupied Palestine to administer law and services per the League of Nations mandate, almost all "Palestinians" were illegal Arabs in Palestine. The Islamic commitment to put the entire Middle-East under Islamic control encouraged illegal Arabs to take Palestine for Islam though it was originally the Jewish homeland. The Media is afraid of the truth! Read it!

World silence on the Jordanian disenfranchisement of Palestinians. WHY won't David Harris draw the OBVIOUS conclusion. Under the guise of concern for the Palestinians, all the organisations who are silent are anti-Jewish, Jew-hating. Steps to be taken are clear. First, approach these organisations one by one for comment and reaction. As likely as not there will be either none at all or something very bland. Publish their responses. ACCUSE them of one-sidedness, of hypocisy,of Jew-HATRED. Put all these organisations on the DEFENSIVE. The pen is mightier than the sword!
