Exodus: The bad news

Many times the stories most prominently displayed in newspapers and on news websites are tales of suffering, death, and destruction.  Seldom are there stories that evoke anything positive.  Why is that?

Perhaps news organizations figure people prefer stories of suffering, death, and destruction.  It captures their imagination and the news organizations need to make a profit.  The more people who read or watch the news the more the news organizations can charge for advertising.

Everybody has problems in their lives.  For example, you may have a bad cold, are out of work, or getting over a failed relationship, but compared to being blown up, shot repeatedly, smothered by debris from a strong earthquake, or being disfigured in a car accident, the hardships you may be experiencing seem quite trivial.  After all, you are still alive.

Maybe people are just fascinated with death.  You are born and then you have to live.  Everybody does it a little differently to the best of their ability.  Living isn’t an easy thing but then you eventually die and then what happens?  Nobody knows.  Death is perhaps the greatest mystery of life.

Many people complain that movies, television, and video games are too violent, but will complaints change anything?  Will politicians who castigate the moral depravity of such mediums while at the same time sending real people, not actors, overseas to kill and be killed, change what the public consumes?  It is obvious that violence sells.  You may see a movie of gangsters killing and being killed, yet it is doubtful you will see a movie of a custodian cleaning school classrooms, keeping the premises clean so that children can learn.  That’s too boring.

I remember when Palestinian suicide bombers were blowing themselves up at least once a week, killing scores of Israelis on buses, marketplaces, cafes, as well as various other locations.  I was sickened and angry, and with the advent of the internet I began viewing the Israeli news websites many times a day to see what horrible thing would happen next.  When the situation in Israel calmed down I began to follow the Israeli news less closely.  I guess I too am intrigued about reading about tragedy.

Perhaps following the news too closely isn’t such a good thing.  Reading a newspaper while eating may even cause indigestion.

I feel the most important news are the things that happen in your immediate environment which have a direct impact on your life, not stories of suffering, death, and destruction, the type of stories that frequently make the headlines.   Nonetheless news headlines will continue focusing on bad things happening to people, such as murder, natural disasters, wars, famine, vehicle and plane crashes, to name a few.

Why do you think this is?

What you said here: "Many people complain that movies, television, and video games are too violent, but will complaints change anything? Will politicians who castigate the moral depravity of such mediums while at the same time sending real people, not actors, overseas to kill and be killed, change what the public consumes?" Seems to be a bit of a non-sequitor. Are you arguing that we see violence because it exists, or because it sells? The solutions for those two issues are significantly different. I would argue your point about politicians not being willing to censor media if they are willing to sanction real-life violence is verifiably false. In the 1940s the world was just violent--in fact more so--but the level of violence and other morally questionable content allowed in the media of the day was almost nil compared to the orgiastic fervor with which todays media and entertainment industries inundate us with explicit words and images. I would argue that, when people used to turn off the TV when something graphic came on, organizng boycotts of 'immoral' purveyors of entertainment, those companies shied away from showing such content. Witness the response to the 'Janet Jackson' incident during the Super Bowl a year or two ago. People cried out, and as a result were assured that they wouldn't be seeing any more such things, at least on supposedly 'family friendly' programming. In essence, supply=demand. If people stop watching, they'll stop showing.

There are a number of online magazines that focus on realistic positive solutions. These magazines also point us towards everyday heroes and organizations that we can get involved with. www.yesmagazine.org www.resurgence.org www.odemagazine.com www.idealist.org

Death is a mystery? Is Hashem the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob ? G-d is not the G-d of the dead but of the living. He made us to enjoy eternity with Him. Did He not take Enoch and Elijah? If we only have hope in this life we are most miserable. It is appointed unto man once to die, and then the judgement.Renewe your mind with Proverbs3;5,6

Human nature being what it is, we like to read about human tragedy while politicians on both sides of the table make more tragedy for the human race.I personally believe Israel has the right to survive in peace or if they are attacked,to respond---stick to your guns ,Israel

to the Great country of Israel and the citizens;rock on, i am a supporter of Israels right to survive as a nation and its citizens right to be able to go to sleep at night with out having to worry about those fools that are causing problems.those factions that attack Israel oughta attack the coward Iranians,Syrians, and who ever else that that they fancy. But they wont, because they are scared or were given hollow promises, they are jerks.

Victor Ashkenazy:

Once my comments have been issued for several days here and deleted later, it's enough clear for me that I shouldn't have touched on a particular sensitive point.

Since then, my question was to understand why my comments had gotten a green light to be issued for weeks. Not to understand why they have been deleted later.
