Guest Blog: Obama, far-sighted peacemaker or naive meddler? Posted by David Turner
Comments: 35
President Barack Obama is getting set for some military arm-twisting against Iran spearheaded by Israel. One day the US threatens Israel with sanctions for threatening to attack Iran's nuclear facilities. One week later, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton warns that "it is unacceptable for Iran to have nuclear weapons." Adding muscle to the threat, Defense Secretary Gates arrives in Israel to discuss military options. What's real and what's not in reporting regarding the US-Israel relationship? When Israel threatens to attack Iran, is the threat substantive and imminent or theatre; the Israeli bad cop playing to Obama's good cop? When Clinton demands a complete halt to settlement construction across the Green Line, is that really US policy or is it just a bone to the Arab street? And when news media warn of a crisis in Israel-US relations, is the whispered information feeding those reports accurate or slanted to create an impression serving a hidden diplomatic purpose? The US and most of the world have long tired of the Israel-Palestine issue, and are anxious for a quick fix. If one accepts the Arab assertion that Palestine is the reason for all that ails the Middle East, not the corruption and police-state controls feeding unrest at home, the simple answer is for powerful Israel to bend and grant the Palestinians a state. Except that, since the introduction of the Saudi Plan, and for decades prior to it, the Palestinians have never fielded leadership capable of defining and achieving that goal. And today the Palestinian leadership, such as it is, is more divided than ever, both politically and geographically, with Hamas and Fatah engaged in a cold civil war. In short, unless and until the Palestinians can achieve a level of political and social maturity and competence it makes no sense to expect an ersatz Palestine to even manage the complexity of everyday affairs of self-governance. So why does Obama make a Palestinian state the lynchpin of his Middle East diplomacy? Is it possible that the administration is really as committed to the primacy of Palestinian statehood as they appear? I, for one, prefer to believe that Obama, Mitchell and Ross are more rational and realistic than their public diplomacy describes. The Saudis, too, set creation of a Palestinian state as precondition for Israel-Arab peace at the time the Plan was introduced. But in the intervening years conditions on the ground have significantly changed. Not only are the Palestinians farther from that goal but, more importantly, there is the rapid growth of the Iranian threat in the wake of the US invasion of Iraq. While Ahmadinejad describes Iranian ambitions as anti-Israel, and not a threat to the Arab world, Arab states from the Persian Gulf to the Atlantic know that Iran's ambitions are more dangerous to themselves than to Israel. The Saudis, for example, following the Israeli example, are building a wall entirely surrounding the kingdom, coast through desert, protection against Iran. They are also reported to have "quietly" informed Israel that the IAF could use Saudi airspace should the decision to attack the Islamic Republic be finalized. Then there is the transit of an Israeli submarine and other warships through the Suez Canal, in support of an assumed future decision to attack Iran. Iranian ambitions and the nuclear threat have stripped the fig leaf from the already existing Arab-Israel military alliance. If the Saudis feel the need, for domestic consumption, to demand a conciliatory gesture from Israel to allow them to "come out of the closet" regarding their involvement with Israel, then the precondition definitely should not depend on an improbable Palestinian renaissance involving political and social maturity. I began this article suggesting that President Obama and his highly experienced staff of advisers and emissaries in matters Middle East might not be so naïve and unrealistic as America's public diplomatic posture suggests. Enter the US outreach to Syria. As prime minister, Ehud Barak and Hafez al-Assad were reportedly within meters of signing an accord. That agreement, including the legendary Rabin "pocket," secret promises presumably involving the return of the Golan should Syria meet certain conditions, already exists. Unlike the highly unstable and politically immature Palestinians, for better or worse Syria is relatively stable and mature. In fact, Israeli military and intelligence experts describe Syria as assiduously adhering to all agreements between the two adversaries since the end of the 1967 war. Obama is returning a US ambassador to Syria, and special Middle East envoy Mitchell declared following his recent meeting with Assad that Syria is an important player in regional stability, a moderating influence over Hamas, etc. If Israel is to expend time and effort anyway, doing so with a more responsible governing authority holds more promise of success than doing so with an ungoverned and ungovernable entity. In previous negotiations the Syrians proved to be shrewd and tenacious. If past experience serves, they will be no easier to deal with today. But at least Israel would be dealing with an entity offering the possibility of serious negotiations, if not necessarily assuring its success. But whether or not Palestinians are ever capable of assuming the responsibilities of self-governance; whether or not Israel and Syria actually manage to sign an agreement this time around, the main problem facing Israel and the Arab states is the Iranian threat, and an open and formal alliance between Israel and the Arabs is the most effective way to contain that threat. If containing Iran is the real diplomatic agenda of the Obama administration, camouflaged with the chimera of an Israel-Palestine "road map," then this president may prove to be the most diplomatically far-sighted and effective since the 1940's. If not, if this initiative turns out to be exactly what it appears to be, then the "Obama Initiative" will go down as just another naïve American misadventure in the quagmire of Middle East politics. And Obama and his experts will simply add one more chapter to a very long tradition of US bungling in the Middle East.

How does linking the Iranian bomb with the Israeli-Palestinian conflict encourage Arab countries to come out and ally with Israel? That linkage essentially destroys any progress in Arab-Israeli alliances because now they are forced to take on that message. They'd rather the US pressure Israel to give something up (after all, when will such a chance come again?) rather than admit they will need Israel's help. If the bomb is Israel's fault and even the US is saying so, how would any Arab country dare come out and ally w/ them? These 'positive' moves are IN-SPITE of Obama not because of.

Playing "games" with peoples lives and livlihoods should not be on a president's agenda. If Obama is saying one thing to Israel and another to the palestinians, then he is not being honest and truthful, which leads me to believe he is very naive and foolish. Mitchell has never been on the side of Israel and Obama has always been sympathetic to Hamas. Facts and facts. Sorry to burst your bubble, David Turner, but Obama is not on the side of peace.

After getting the Golan ,Syria will become a "democracy"....The Syrian state will no more patronize the terrorist groups. The Syrian state will be as white as snow...BUT individuals in Syria(do not forget Syria is now a "democracy") will be free to help the resistance. And new "private" televisions will help the cause of resistance...And of course the Israelis will still have to negotiate with Palestinians BUT WITHOUT THE GOLAN...better to let Ahmedinejad get the bomb,at least the Saudis are peeing in their pants...NOT A BAD THING.

But playing games with peoples lives and livelIhood with his domestic agenda is what President Obama is good at here in the United States and NOT BEING HONEST to accomphlish these goals is his tool. He is a domestic policy wonk who's ideas revolve around his community organizer background and he gives little regard to the consequences of his policies. He is quite willing to CAUSE SETBACKS in order to further the crisis and thus advance the solution he proposes.I am sure he is using the same theory on the foreign policy stage that he uses on the domestic.Strong arm Chicago politics

Barak Hussein Obama doesn't care about Israel or the jews. He cares about his power and his standing in the muslim world. Obama approved the Arab Peace plan. That plan would cause the destruction of Israel. The Arab Plan is, until this point in time, an all or nothing offer. Israel wants it be a starting point for negotiations but at this point it isn't. The reason Obama is focusing on halting construction in E.J. and the W.B. is because the arabs want Israel to give up E.J , withdraw 300,000 jews from the W.B. and withdraw to the 67' lines (& flood Israel with millions of Pals refugees).

"In short, unless and until the Palestinians can achieve a level of political and social maturity and competence it makes no sense to expect an ersatz Palestine to even manage the complexity of everyday affairs of self-governance." --- And why does that matter? Today, if the palis launch rockets into Israel and Israel attacks them, the Israelis are portrayed as criminals for bullying the poor, stateless pali victims. I say, call the palis' hand. Draw the lines for their SOVEREIGN state, push them behind those borders and if they attack you again, you will have Causus Belli to SMASH them.

Responses to this article are a little surprising given that, while the title refers to Obama, the heart of the article refers to the necessity and promise of a strategic realignment Iran opened up for the Arabs and Israel. By stupidly unleashing Iran, by invading Iraq; by now deemphasizing Iraq only to prioritize the Afghan war: the US has proven itself an uncertain protector of its own interests in the ME.
By allying militarily and openly with Israel the Saudis, et al, are provided an on-the-ground ally, an uncomplicated by global considerations deterrent to Iran. With its obviously

strongest and most capable military, with an unspoken but well-known nuclear deterrent, its distance from the Gulf offering the Arab states strategic depth, Israel is clearly the Arabs only reliable ally against the Iranians. And this is the heart of my article, that Iran has unified the Arabs states and Israel against a common enemy. It is this Persian threat, ironically, that opened a door to Arab-Israel peace, that is forcing a realignment of diplomatic priorities, that previously did not exist.

It is only necessary that we all, Arabs and Israel, find the diplomatic formula allowing us to walk through that door.

David Turner's choosing his view reminds me of the German Jews who chose to believe that a modern Germany would not be involved with genocide of the Jews. Despite all evidence to the contrary. Obama is trying to change the very nature of the USA. His threats against Israel must be taken seriously, and Israel can no longer assume the US is in its' corner.

Obama is neither a peacemaker ("farsighted"? too ludicrous to comment on) nor a naive bungler. He is the most hostile U.S. president Israel has ever faced. Even Jimmy Carter was less hostile towards Israel while he was president. Everything Obama is trying to do is enormously detrimental to Israel. He refuses to destroy Iran's nukes and discourages Israel from doing so. Yet Obama knows very well that Iran's nukes are an existential danger to Israel. Obama's policy of tearing Jerusalem, Judea and Samaria from Israel is also an existential threat to Israel. Obama is our enemy. Plain and simple.

Here are somethings to consider in this context: Obama is a Marxist. He believes his government wants absolute power over American citizens. That power includes the power over life and death. Obama sees Marxist dictators like Castro, Chavez, Kim Jong Il, Putin, Mao Tze Tung and Hitler as great leaders. He will do what he can to wipe out freedom and independant thought. Obama does not want Israel to destroy Iran's nuclear offense. Obama is learning from Iran's leaership. Obama is also ignoring Israel's sovreignty by telling her she can't expand the community building.

Obama is not an American patriot. he is the minion of big money that wants control over the US economy, and his sentiments and "ideas" lie with the extreme left who hates america and wants to be "universal". obama is just a mouthpiece, a manipulator and above all a fraud. it's a pity so many good willing americans fell for his palabra.

Stay the course Israel. Do not let the boneheaded diplomats from the U.S. trick you into believing the American public is against you. Your land was given to you by GOD. We, the silent majority, are behind you. God Bless Israel and peace to Jerusalem.

I'll add this...Israel, you are God's chosen people. I, as a Texan, admire your battle. You stand against a hostile region. The odds are against you. Be proud of that. God is with you and I know and tust from Ezek 38, he is with you. Anybody against you is doomed. Please know, there are many God fearing people in Texas. We love you. We stand with you. Please do not group Texas in with the United States. Look at our history. Though we have our diffrences, we, believe in freedom and the gift of "free will" GOD has given us. Thank you and bless you!

Barack the terrible, or maybe Barack the impaler--you choose. I like Barack vader. He likes the dark side of the force. He is a narcissistic, arrogant, liar, and an Islamic activist. He hates America and Israel. He quotes the Koran often, and is sensitive to muslim culture and values. All the while he is intolerant of Christians, and what they value. Oh--he is also a Marxist. So long democracy, party over. The only peace this man wants for Israel is a sign over it saying R.I.P. the same goes for american liberty. Can you say Americorp. mein herr.

I was taught that if you have nothing nice to say, then say nothing. Therefore I will say nothing about Obama, the Saudis, Syria, or the 'Pals'. Perhaps I should include the KAPOs in the USA in that list. To the author, please take off your rose-colored glasses. Review Fitna, and read your Koran, and make Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged required reading.

As an Arab I am telling you Mr.Turner that some Arabs and Muslims hate Iran more than Israel, but they simply won't ally Israel to confront the "Iranian threat" or whatever you call it . Your way of thinking reflects sophistication, but also ignorance of the Arab world and its complexities.
Your article , as well as the comments, suggest that Obama is either naive and stupid, or working subtly for the sake of Israel, Like working for Israel is the opposite of naivety. This way of thinking is funny at its best!

Thand you Geo, etc. One may only try. Clearly the response wwas focused almost entirely on the US policy/Obama side of my article, missed entirely my irony, and also missed the policy options for Israel in light of what appears to be very consistent US policy towards Israel and the Middle East entire. Recalling that Iraq began with Bush (considered the great friend of, to Obama*s enemy of, Israel), the opening to Iran was also a Bush initiative. US policy is to pursue immediate goals, AfgPak is the flavor of the decade. SpecRelat w/Israel and Arabs is expendable. Real defense is local alliance

Postscript: Recently two pieces appeared in the media throwing further light on the conduct of US diplomacy, and the apparently intimate coordination between Obama and Netanyahu. An article appearing in the Washington Times on 29 July quotes former Defense Secretary William S. Cohen, refering to recent visits to Aab capitals, *in the past, the first thing I'd get was a lecture about Israel....I no longer receive that, and when I go and travel, what I hear is, there is greater fear of Iran than there is animus toward Israel.* And a 30 July DEBKAfile article: *As recently as Sunday, July 26,

a Washington sources quoted a US official as asking Israel to create *military background noise* that would harass Tehran without triggering an outright military clash, whether with Iran or its surrogates, the Lebanese Hizballah and the Palestinian Hamas. But in the last three days, fresh reports have come out of Tehran indicating that US-Israeli coordination on the Iranian threat was lagging far behind developments. The Herzliya conference therefore switched its agenda to address urgent steps, in addition to the military pressure, for expediting Ahmadinejad's eclipse.*

Obama is a liar and you cannot believe anything he says. He has lied to all of America. The only ones who support him are the left wing nuts. Israel, please please do not believe him. He will destroy Israel if he can as he is destroying America. Do not be stupid like Americans are. GOD will take care of you. Obama does not know what power is until he sees what GOD is going to do to America and to those nations who are cursing Israel, GOD's beloved people. Stand firm and never bend to a radical muslum.

I may not have adequately expressed myself in writing this article, but to underline my main points: the US is, and has been, a necessary but unreliable ally. In exchange for acting as diversion (Jews battling teens in Intifada distracts fellaheen from their ruling oppressors) or policeman (Jordan threatened by Syria threatened by Israel) on the Mid-east frontline for the US Israel generally enjoys US protection at UN for engaging in these activities. In short, so long as Israel is useful (waning now because distraction is al-Quaida/Taliban and Pakistan nukes, not Arab oil)

she can count on US for weapons and cover at UN. When, s it now happening, center of interest moves Far East, Israel will be facing the reality of existence in a Middle East with little or no help from the West.
Iran provides Israel the opportunity to provide the Saudis, etc., the defense cover which the US is also withdrawing as its interests change. For now the Saudis are offering permission for Israel to cross their airspace to Iran. Since they have more to fear from Iran than does Israel, Israel can demand more, open alliance against the common enemy, peace under the Saudi Plan.

Are we to believe that Obama is a genius of foreign affairs? Could he be one of the greats. Lets see. First he boxes Israel into a corner, he blusters about the GREAT achievements of Muslims in the U S , none of which I can remember, and then he really wants Israel on his side to finally confront Iran, Nuke them, and bluff the entire world with his brialliant speeches. I M getting a little paranoid, what about you?
