Michael Jackson was a musician of immense talent and arguably the greatest pop singer of our era. He reinvented pop music and produced the world's best-selling albums. He was also a man of stupendous wealth who, by his own admission, used his celebrity to entice children to visit his estate and share a bed with him. While he was never convicted of a crime, his trial for child abuse and its aftermath revealed a pattern of utterly reprehensible conduct toward his own children and the children of others entrusted to his care.

In our celebrity-obsessed age, it is perhaps not surprising that we were never willing to judge Michael Jackson by the standards that we use to judge everyone else. Jackson's fans defended him ferociously, seeing him as a symbol of innocence and insisting that he was more victim than victimizer. Is it really necessary, however, now that he is dead, for those who speak in the name of the Jewish community to be joining in the adulation and offering excuses for his actions?

Jackson's relations with the Jewish community were, to say the least, complicated. Some have charged that he was an anti-Semite, but this is unclear. He was, however, a clever marketer and an opportunist who used anti-Jewish comments to his own advantage. His 1995 release "They Don't Care About Us" included the line: "Jew me, sue me, everybody do me." The words caused a storm of protest, as everyone knew that they would. Jackson first responded with a rambling explanation arguing that the lyrics did not mean what they plainly said. Eventually he offered an apology, to the applause of a grateful Jewish establishment. Over the course of the controversy, the incident generated immense publicity and additional sales. This pattern was to repeat itself a number of times.

Following Jackson's death, the Jewish press and the Jewish blogosphere were filled with proud stories of Jewish writers and public figures who had met Jackson, been to synagogue with him, discussed Jewish music with him, and introduced their children to him. It was even claimed that his second wife and two of his children were Jewish. One blogger, known for his insightful and sober commentary, compared Jackson to the Biblical figure of Joseph.

The most widely-distributed article on Micheal Jackson by far from a Jewish source was the one written by Shmuley Boteach, an Orthodox rabbi and friend of Jackson, for the Jerusalem Post. Boteach's comments were also featured on a number of TV entertainment shows. The Post article was painful to read, and for a rabbi, inexcusable. Boteach congratulates himself for accompanying Jackson to Shabbat dinners and for introducing him to Elie Wiesel. Boteach's Jackson, far more sinned against than sinning, had no responsibility for his actions. Everything that he did is attributable to the failures of those in his inner circle. Jackson's attacks on Jews are not mentioned. Jackson's treatment of his own children - when they appeared in public he shrouded them in masks or veils, and he dangled one child over a balcony - is not mentioned. Most important, his treatment of other people's children - those who were lured to his home and made to sleep in his bed - is not mentioned; and needless to say, treating other's children in this way is utterly forbidden by any reading of Jewish law and tradition.

To Boteach, Jackson is a flawed but sympathetic individual, a tragic figure characterized by "nobility of spirit." No, he is not. There is not a Jewish school in North America that would teach the lessons of Jackson's life to Jewish children in the way that Rabbi Boteach sees them. True, Jackson was a great musician and the pain of his death is felt by millions; but at a time like this, it would have been far better for Rabbi Boteach and others in our community to just remain silent.

Thanks for finally speaking the truth about Michael Jackson when everyone else seems to be portraying him as some kind of hero and forgetting about his controversial past.

Boteach souled out

It has been often said that America needs a queen, or a king. Lacking that we place so-called celebrities on pedestals, and honor them with exorbitant riches. All their foibles are discounted, or whitewashed. Too many worship the Golden Calf.

It gives me shivers that all (sic) keep on discussing MJ's past lifetime and few (if anybody?) seems concerned with his post-death future... Is it biblical or Judaic to believe that he has stopped existing? Was he just here for 'our' pleasure and his own aggrandizement?! From a Biblical perspective "the way the tree falls, it will rest *forever*...". But like the king of rock'n roll mankind will device a 'culture' in which also the king of pop will be 'alive'. The devil goes around like a roaring lion, watching whichever he might devour..., idols and idolaters alike...

Boteach is not much of a Rabbi, and mostly just kisses the asses of celeberties.

Thank you. MJ-A waste of time was he. As a human being-big disappointment. As a singer-everyone to their own taste. Boteach- a showman, you know bucks or a very distorted mind. The guy's dead, please let him alone, not for him, but for us.

Dr. Friedman is right...we way over emphasize celebrities! Many are very talented , but some are also Drek! They are all over paid and cost us more becauue of their exorbinant salaries. We are infused with celebritiy-ism....I like Dr. Friedmans reference to the "golden calf". Look at the trouble we Jews got into at Mt Sinai. However , there are some that do good. Jackson ver Vas?

It is a revealing commentary on the Reform movement that the issue of the day for that group is Michael Jackson. A psychotically anti-Semitic, violent regime in Iran is reaching the final phases of it's plan to vaporize the Jews in Israel with nuclear weapons. In Washington, Barak Mitchell & Co. are closing a vice on Israel and unilaterally dismissing prior agreements critical to Jews' security. Christian missionaries are fighting for access to Israeli youth. And all Reform has to talk about is Michael Jackson. Nothing could be further from relevance to Israel and the Jews.

I agree with you Eric. BUTyou miss an important message in Boteach's article. Your failure to recognize the message of "addressing its root cause" is a symptom of the Reform/Conservative mov't. Boteach is saying the root cause for the way Michael turned out is due to the lack of proper upbringing. He had no foundation and destroyed himself. You can say the same thing for Jewry in America. A movt that stands for negation of Torah and Observance produces Jews without a Jewish foundation who then go on to destroy the Jewish people by having gentile children (ref/consvt. woman convert not a ger)..

..I assume you believe that having a proper upbringing would not have made a difference on Michael Jackson. Why? because you believe having a observant upbringing wont make a difference. This is a very Christian (Calvin) view. Wake up Eric and recognize root causes. Jewry in American is disappearing because of your movt's (and the consvt. movt,) central tenet of "Observance isn't important". This has led to the adoption of "patrilineal Jews" by you to pad membership numbers. Observance is the only sure fire way to ensure a Jewish future instead of gentile kids thinking they are Jewish like me

What malarky! R. Boteach wrote an eulogy. He spoke of a friend to his family who could not master his addictive personality and succumbed to his drug use. He has every right to express his views in public. It matters not that this friend was a great celebrity. The tragedy is that a gifted human being can no longer share his talent with the world and that one outspoken public figure has lost a friend for whom he cared but could not reach.

To tevya, #9. I am not a Dr. MD is the abbreviation for Maryland. But thanks for being a kindred spirit.

MR Friedman ..so i made you a Doctor...lol. Maryland = MD. thats funny. I still agree with your column..we in the USA are so in love with popular celebs..it's almost psychologically dammaging. Most of us are not and will never be celebrities. But I am happy that my grandkids think I am great because of my love for them and I do treat them like celebrities. Mister!.. Friedman ...thanks for your responce. Be well. Tevya

How is it that you missed widespread reports that the original Jackson child abuse accuser admitted, shortly after Mr. Jackson's death that he had lied and his parents put him up to the lie to get money? Go google for "jackson accuser admits" or "jordy chandler admits". This means that Mr. Jackson was falsely accused by the first group he settled out of court with and he was acquitted (found innocent of all charges) in the second case that went to trial. Pray that you are never falsely accused of crimes and then treated as if you are guilty even when your accuser admits they lied.

Colin Bradley DK: is at this very moment on trial in The Haague?
Colin Bradley DK: insensitivity to American Jews and constitutes a form of anti-Semitism." the former president of ADL, Benjamin Epstein once said. Since there is plenty of criticism of Israel's treatment of the Palestinians openly expressed in Europe, much of it justifiable, it is not hard for the ADL to 'reveal' that forty percent of Europeans hold anti-Semitic views. As for your scepticism about my fear that a Holocaust could befall the Muslims of Europe, need I remind you that it has in fact already happened in the 9o's, albeit on a much smaller scale than the Jewish one, and it's architect
Colin Bradley DK: you should look to the sources of your information about all this anti-Semitism. You cannot rely on the Anti Defamation League to give you a neutral balanced picture of the world around you, and its survey methodology wherewith it harvests its sensational results like " fully forty percent of those surveyed [in seven European countries] hold anti-Semitic views" is transparently dishonest, unprofessional and biased. The ADL is a pro Israel lobby group which has vested interests in making negative criticism of Israel appear to have anti-Semitic roots. "...criticism of Israel reflects
