It stands to reason that that David Harris would be sensitive to criticism of the AJC's participation in planning "Durban II." After all, by taking part in the Durban II planning process on a US government delegation, AJC contemptuously ignored repeated calls from Israel's Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni and Minister Isaac Herzog for the United States government to stay away and announce it will not participate, period. Israel's priority, and the priority of much of the American Jewish community was to delegitimize the hate-fest, not place an AJC representative on its planning committee.

The fact of the matter is that the only reason the US made a tactical retreat from the process was the pressure created by criticisms such as ours, along with protests made by Israel, Canada, and other American Jewish organizations and leaders.

For more than a year, the AJC has conducted an extensive lobbying campaign of the American government and of foreign governments to stay in Durban II.

On December 11, 2008 Harris told The Jerusalem Post: "We can't afford to declare Durban II lost without more focus on diplomacy." On January 12, 2009 the AJC's human rights arm, the Blaustein Institute, wrote to Secretary Clinton and UN Ambassador Susan Rice: "The Durban Review Conference provides an opportunity to review states' progress in the implementation of their commitments to combat racism made in 2001... While some organizations are calling for a US boycott, we believe that is the wrong decision at this time." As recently as February 22, 2009 Harris told the Post: "Our position on Durban II is clear. We have publicly praised France and the Netherlands, among other countries, for insisting on clear red lines and threatening to withdraw if they are breached."

If they are breached? The AJC's own UN monitoring body, UN Watch, reported the breach had occurred on October 28, 2008, in a report aptly called "Shattering the Red Lines: The Durban II Draft Declaration." Malcolm Hoenlein, executive vice-chairman of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations told the Post on December 11, 2008: "We clearly see that all the red lines that have been enumerated by the Europeans have been violated."

Under the guise of ever-shifting red lines (that in any incarnation Israel and the rest of the Jewish world understood were crossed long ago), AJC has caused great damage to Israel's diplomatic standing.

Contrary to much misinformation, the fact of the matter is that the Obama administration has not made a final decision about whether it will attend Durban II. Its recent departure from the planning sessions in Geneva left the door open for cosmetic changes to the text of the conference declaration that, if made, would allow its negotiators to claim a spurious victory.

The key point which Harris chooses to ignore is that the agreed objective of Durban II is to reaffirm and implement the 2001 Durban Declaration. That document singles out Israel for censure and says that Palestinians are victims of Israeli racism. Consequently any attempted sanitizing of the latest text will be worthless, since by definition the new Declaration will re-affirm the 2001 singling out and demonization of Israel.

Then too, Harris's claim that the US's tactical withdrawal from the planning sessions will make other nations more likely to walk away from Durban II is both incorrect and misleading. The ambiguity of the US's current position has held back the Australians and the British from withdrawing since they do not want to be double-crossed by an Obama administration that eventually attends. Absent a clear American stand, the French and the Germans are putting enormous pressure on Italy and the Netherlands not to break ranks with the rest of the EU - which have no intention of leaving. Initial suggestions by both countries that they would not go are now in doubt.

Worse still, as a quid pro quo for its tactical retreat from Durban II, the US is on the verge of announcing that it will run for a seat (election is a foregone conclusion) on the UN Human Rights Council - a move strongly advocated by none other than the AJC's human rights institute. In the words of an AJC press release January 29, 2007: "The human rights arm of the American Jewish Committee is urging the United States to seek membership on the UN Human Rights Council." The Council has adopted more resolutions and decisions condemning Israel than all other 191 UN member states combined. By joining the UN Human Rights Council, the Obama administration will be legitimizing a body dedicated to the delegitimization of Israel.

It is shameful that the AJC has chosen to join this cynical and sinister process, whose outcome can only be to weaken Israel and strengthen her enemies. And it is outrageous that the AJC has sought to defend its participation in the process by attacking those who point out the consequences of its actions.

No one knows whether the Obama administration or other Western governments will finally stand their ground against pro-Durban, anti-Jewish and anti-democratic forces.  What is certain, however, is that if the Obama administration, European countries or Australia do decide to stay out and the West thus finally says no to the substance of Durban I, it will be through the efforts of all those who have tried to delegitimize the process rather than those whose actions have effectively helped an unconscionable exercise come to fruition.

I'll take Harris's proven tack record of diplomatic achievement for the Jewish people, including his central involvement with Soviet and Ethiopian Jewry, with repeal of the infamous "Zionism is racism" resolution, with success in Israel's long-time struggle for at least temporary WEOG membership at the UN in NY, a nd much more, over the rantings of three journalists whose job is to play to the bleachers, not the real-world decision-makers.

What is AJC thinking! This Jewish concept that if we keep talking sense to our enemies they will come around to love us.After 4000 years of historical Anti-Jewish Inquisitions, Pogroms and the Holocaust...and it ain't over yet! Duban II is a curse. It is nothing but a platform for "sophistcated" Anti Semitism. The UN is nothing but a platform for dengrating Israel...nevermind Darfur, Somalia, Myramar, Pakistan, Iran, the Taliban who make Afghanistan into a hellhouse. All they want to do is yell at the Jews.Jews gave the world God, ten commandments, Jesus and Allah.Good reason to hate us?

Well said. Erosion of human rights and the demonizing of Jews/Israel is a documented mission of Durban II. To have supported it as long - and as far - as they have means that the US and EU have served to legitimize it further. After Durban I there should not have been even a planning session for a repeat performance. Engaging in 'diplomacy' suggests that an entrenched anti-Israel lobby which has repeatedly demonized Israel (while ignoring actual human rights abuses in its own backyard) can continue doing so as long as there is 'discussion'. Canada figured it out early - why not US and EU?

L.S. Good piece of writing! Prudent and sagacity are rare in today's articles as complex as Durban II.

This is a ridiculous rebuttal. David Harris is a pragmatic Jewish leader and the AJC is the world's most reasonable Jewish organization. The writers of this piece should put their personal feelings aside and focus on the THE REAL WORLD in which we live. Thankfully, that is what David Harris and the AJC do.

The Bush Administration had already decided to pull out of Durban II. I share the authors' alarm that the O'Bama Administration was willing to reconsider participating after a State Department decision had been made.

In a column published here ( [ Link to page ] ) I too called for a boycott of Durban II due to the deterioration of the conference into another anti-Israel hate fest. However, we should differentiate between the original worthy goal of the conference and the hijacked agenda from some of the worst offenders of human rights in the world. It is right (even smart) to attempt to liberate the conference from the group that has hijacked it. Should the attempt fail, there will be wider support for a boycott. Harris seems to share this view.

Mdmes. Glick, Phillips and Bayesky don't appreciate what it takes to accomplish goals in this environment. Monday, they said "While some organizations are calling for a US boycott, we believe that is the wrong decision at this time." The EU threatened to boycott the conference unless the declaration's wording was changed to keep the meeting from becoming an anti-Semitic forum. Yesterday, references to Israel and religious defamation were removed from the draft declaration. These are not cosmetic changes. Pragmatism and statecraft, a hallmark of AJC and Harris, contributed to this result.

The likely attitude of most Jews towards Durban II was for the the world's democartic governments including the U.S. to abstain from attending, knowing what to expect, more venemous Israel bashing. However, it seems reasonable that the new Obama administration, to be consistent with their dipomacy approach that stresses dialogue and reason, would first explore the possibility of change with Durban Ii to influence the change by joinng. The three commentators shoulf not short change the Obama administration by their narrow views and diatribe against David Harris.

I don't think that anyone is saying that AJC doesnt do good works. I'm sure Mr Harris is a very honorable man who loves the Jewish community and serves it well. However, there are some Jews who really believe they can change the deseased mind of the Anti Semite. Talking with these Nazi type mentalities is useless. Mr Obama means well, I:m sure,,,but wait til the US negociators start up with these extremist crocs of Islam. Witness only Israel in its debate over the soldier Schalit. That tells all. Maybe we should send Mr Harris to deal with Hamas.

I strongly support Israel's right not only to exist, but also to thrive. But I don't believe the US administration's sole job in in this world is to protect Israel, nor is it the only responsibility that AJC and other organizations have. While Israel's well-being is arguably a central factor in Jewish survival in today's world, it is *not* the only factor. Accordingly, groups such as AJC (and perhaps Israeli Jews?) need to engage the rest of the world on a number of issues and in a number of ways. Diaspora lives matter, too. We don't dictate your (Israeli) tactics; stop trying to dictate ours.

It is quite legitimate for diverse Jewish opinions to surface re Durban 2. By reading them we can make up our own minds on their validity. However, The AJC's Z Word blog has censored comments that I have posted in support of Melanie Phillips. Such contempt for freedom of expression will not help The AJC in its battle to expose the bias of the anti-zionist media which similarly curtails freedom of expression to prevent othe opinions from being published.

I believe we could argue compellingly that anti-Israel criticism crosses the line and becomes anti-Semitism whenever it questions Israel's right to exist and the Jewish right to self-determination. Half the world's Jewish population lives in Israel and anything that threatens their welfare or survival should be regarded as anti-Semitic. If it is true that Durban II is bent on deligitimizing the State of Israel, then this argument would help to brand the meeting as racist and, therefore, against its own raison d'etre..

Harris is an Obama supporter. This is well known in certain circles.

Colin Bradley DK: Well said Linda. We shall indeed oppose any politic which aims to isolate, oppress, kill or expel a weaker ethnic, religious or national group in its midst, so as to gain the upper hand for it's own ideology or ethnic group. But keep a cool head and do not let your hopes be whipped into a mad frenzy by the paranoic ravings of someone who is so obsessed by one facet of his history, that he is oblivious to a hundred other problems in the world which actually require much more urgent attention. Remember that the pre-condition for genocides is war. So oppose war and you are well on the way to
Linda, Australia: The catch-cry is and was and should be "Never Again". I for one as a goy woman who just happens to love Israel will do all in my power to stop it. but I am only one person. As each generation goes through its life, they should make every attempt not to repeat the abhorrent mistakes of its predecessor/s. Why can't we? How long do we need to play the full orchestra on this one? c'mon, let's work together, so that it does NOT happen, EVER AGAIN. Never again. And for the record, my son's name is Jacob (ie Israel) David and yes, he's half-Jewish.
