In a recent Jerusalem Post op-ed piece Imagine Palestinian settlers in Israel, the idea was suggested to Israelis and others who support a Jewish civilian presence in the areas of Judea and Samaria:

to imagine how you would feel if, instead of there being 300,000 Israelis who'd gone to live in the West Bank, there were 300,000 Palestinians from the West Bank who'd come to live in Israel. And imagine if they'd set themselves up over here the way Israelis have done over there."

Of course, did it not occur to the writer that many Israelis have actually not only imagined that but, especially over the past decade, truly feel that that is the situation with Israel's Arab minority. Why do you think Avigdor Lieberman's Israel Beiteinu party achieved 15 seats in the Knesset?  It is no imagination that forests were burned down, that religious fanatics are copying the Mufti of Mandate times and claiming Jews are trying to destroy Al-Aqsa, that illegal construction is in the thousands of units, that aid and assistance to terrorists have been extended and that Arab MKs openly identify with the goals of the most radical Muslim nationalists and have been particularly foul-mouthed in the Knesset.

At the basis of the suggested "imagination," though is a great idea.  Let's start calling all Arab residential locations in Israel "settlements".

And we say: what goes down for the Jews in Judea & Samaria, goes for the Arabs of Israel.  After all if Jews can't live among Arabs in their state, why should Arabs be permitted the same in a Jewish state.  Or is only an Arab state allowed to act that inhuman and immoral fashion?  Why should the original Mandate area intended to be the reconstituted Jewish national home evolve into three states, two (Jordan & "Palestine") Arab with no Jews and one Jewish state but with a 20% Arab minority? Fair?

It isn’t fair, of course.  But life isn’t fair in general.  Worse, though, is the opposition to my proposed idea is the concept that, in truth, all this area does “belong” to the Arabs and we Jews/Zionists sneaked in and set up a state as colonialists.  We were lucky even to get recognition in 1947, two years after the Holocaust, to borders which represented a third partition of our homeland whereas in 1917, all of Jordan and Israel and the disputed territories, and even a portion of southern Lebanon according to the Versailles 1919 Peace Conference, should have been Jewish land.

Imagine.

Speaking real history and logic as opposed to the accepted rhetoric and demogoguery we always hear/see is like spitting in the wind but, as in any other desert, still a refreshing, if momentary, relief. Yay Medad.

This blogger is obviously a complete idiot and has no concept of the word comparitor. There is no comparison to the position of Jews who settled in the west bank and those Arabs living in Israel. Jews in the West Bank were not born there, their imediate ancestors did not come from there and they did not receive the consent of the indigeonous people there, they are invaders!!!!! The Arabs in Israel did not come and settle there, they were born there and their immediate ancestors have been there for centurys. They did not need the concent of the Jews because they were already there!!!!!!!

Now THIS makes sense. Why is Derfner given such prominence here, and this piece of logic hidden in the blog section? We are our own worst enemies.

The Arab majority towns and villages in Israel are NOT a part of Palestine and WILL NOT become part of Palestine if their is ever such a state. The settlements in the West Bank however will at least in part BECOME part of Israel in any negotiated peace plan. A huge difference which the writer either is unable to comprehend or chose to ignore.

Actually, Arabs have far more than just two states. They also Saudi Arabia (with NO JEWS) and Yemen, and Oman, and Bahrain, and Qatar, and the Emirates, and Egypt, and ...need I continue?????

Tom, careful when calling people "idiot". You would end up being one since your "facts" are simply not factual, correct or true. Nice try at trolling. And John UK: but the Arabs of Israel are now referring to themselves as "Palestinians". So, where do they belong, in Israel or in a future "Palestine? Can they have their cake and eat it, too? Does Israel always have to eat feces? Btw, they were part of the "Palestine Mandate" so you're still incorrect, something which you may not be able to comprehend.

to 5: i hear this nonsense a lot. Let me ask you, do israelis seriously belief that the palestinians dont deserve a state of their own because there are other arab states? please explain because i dont understand this argument. i come from belgium and we have our own little history fighting for a little freedom from occupation. I imagine it would be like saying we dont deserve a state of our own because we could go and live in germany or something. it is a disgusting argument if you ask me.

Jan-John-Thomas: Go back and read the history of the Palestine Mandate, it will make it very clear just who is living on who's land. Michael

If we go with premise that ethnic cleansing is unacceptable and whole population need to have equal civil rights, does any Israeli wants whole of Israel, Jordan and disputed territories in one state? And please, forget the logic "we came back after 2000 years and want our land back". Of modern European nations, only handful live in same place and speak similar language like 2000 years ago. While in Americas... Anyway, try with ethnic cleansing and count that EU will cut all economic relations. So, back to the drawing board and decide: binational Greater Israel or division on base of 1967.

Do you honestly in that you god is the only God. You do not have the right to treat other peolpe like the ars less than human. Remember the old porverb, love your neighbor and treat like you wanted to be treated.

To #7: Most of the Arab families in Israel and the "occupied territories" moved to the region around the turn of the century. Turkish and British census figures prove this point. They are no more "native" to the land than the Polish and Russian Jews who purchased and built the first settlements. The only true natives are the Bedouin tribes, and they don't seem to have a problem living in a Jewish state. Only the Arab interlopers are clamoring for new homeland. Be that as it may, the Arabs who call themselves "Palestinians" already have a sovereign government. They could have a state tomorrow.

Mladen: we can't do what you want: "back to the drawing board" until we figure out if the ARABS are willing to come to terms with an Israel in any form or division. The Palestine LIBERATION Organization was formed in 1964. What "Palestine" do you think they intended to "liberate"? or eradicate? AL - "Do you honestly in that you god is the only God" yes, but there are others in the minds of others and what does he wish? Jihad

YMedad: Shahab, thanks for your theological input. Nevertheless, I would suggest to you that only under Jewish administration and sovereignty can all three religions be best served. When under Crusader rule and under various Muslim rules, the Jews, Muslims and Christians ALL suffered. Under Israelis rule since 1967, all have benefited, well, almost. The Jews still don't permit themselves their rights on the Temple Mount. As for two states, there are two already: Jordan and Israel in the area of the Palestine Mandate. Who needs a third state in the area?
Michael Beverford: I beg to differ... God made and keeps his word to the nation and people of Israel. In both the torah and the christian bible, we see fortold of everything that has, is, and will happen to the nation and people of Israel. the restoration of this nation in may of 1948 is a fullfilment of this truth. God has not taken his eye off of either. The claims of any other nation on this land are mute...God has the final word in everything. He will show His protection on this nation and His people as written by the prophet Ezekiel.
Shahab Mohd Altaf INDIA: GOD's Promise to Moses fulfilled in his Time itself. The Bible revived the story of the Promised Land and the UN created Israel in 1948.The Jews have a historical and religious link to the Holy Land but, after they rebelled against GOD and His messengers, they were punished by GOD and the other faithful Christians and Muslims were given possession of the Land.Today all the three faiths, Judaism, Christianity and Islam have rights over the Holy Land. The Two-States solution is the only way out.Abraham is the Father of all the three peoples.Peace is intangible but Holiness is by association.
